While its long-dry riverbeds indicate it wasn't always the case, the Scarlet Desert is one of the driest areas on Luclin (save for a small oasis in its south).

It is home to a variety of species, from cheetahs and lightcrawlers to sunflowers and undead sun revenants. The Grol Baku, Tro Jeg, and Vas Ren alien tribes are all well-established in this area, as are the Blood Tribe of troglodytes which can be found in large numbers throughout the desert and inside the various caves in the area.

A large plateau dominates the northeastern part of this desert. Be careful you don't step off the ledge and accidentally fall to your death!

We might need some clarification on these, here's why:

-Twilight Sea armor quests were a real mess, to the point the Devs a long time ago made all of the named in Scarlett Desert (and perhaps other zones, I don't recall) drop the entire slate of quest loot with every kill. Prior it had been random off named that were already hard to get to spawn (for armor that very few needed at the level you could do the quests).

-the mob you got the modern picture of... did it drop the big list of loot? If not, then it is not the named for the quest drops.

-Note that at least one of the quest drops listed: Blue Egg has a messed up thread as it seems there was a second blue egg item used in an event quest.

Yes, it dropped many items, including Ruby Studded Medal along with a few Marks and other items that I added to the drop list. Since it actually looks messy in that zone with all the "bloodtribe shaman" and "a bloodtribe shaman", I figured it was the right mob with a different name, either misspelled when entered or changed at some point. Anyway, in case Bloodtribe Chanter would also exist as a named, we'd be able to add it, possibly with a screenshot.

I've looked through a few things... it appears a few Scarlet Desert NPC were entered with incorrect names (there's posts with corrections from years ago) so this is just likely one that wasn't caught until now.

Also, named in this zone can be fully lower case as there are other examples of this in the zone. Nothing like breaking your own conventions to confuse the playerbase.

RE: mage soloing
# Mar 26 2006 at 3:16 AM Rating: Decent
I didn't see a follow up to your experience, but a pair of us (lvl 46/48) just spent a couple of hours there. Nearly all of the creatures con'ed dark blue or light blue, some green. Initially we got killed or chased off a lot by the light crawlers. They have a tendancy to gang up on you. So if you solo, just be sure to pull your target away from the "open".

And, we had a nasty surprise up on the plateau...but I'll let you find out on your own.
RE: mage soloing
# Apr 04 2006 at 1:12 PM Rating: Decent
Not sure what the super duper top secret nasty surprise was up on the plateau, but do everyone a favor and post actual information here that is useful to people, rather than being a tard.

Plateau is actually a nice little place to hunt, a little higher level than the rest of the zone. Pretty easy to pull the sun revenants and reavers single, but the tro jeg usually add, unless you harmony or fd split them. You need to camp the sun revenants here for the Lucid Shard for the VT key.

The only nasty surprised I'm aware of is some of the revenants/reavers can cast fear...which can be a problem on the top of a plateau if you do not have lev on hehe.

If you are hunting here for exp, leave the Disciple of Sun mob alone if he spawns, he's very high level and for the monk epic 1.5...he conned indifferent to my lowbie when there and never aggroed on another pull. The Elite Sun Revenant can be spawned in the tro jeg area of the plateau also, but a wizard has to spawn him deliberately, he doesn't just pop. Most guilds that are killing it will see you camping there and warn you to move hehe. But if you see 50ish people appear in the zone, you might want to be proactive and get out of the way.

RE: kiting
# Sep 12 2003 at 12:18 AM Rating: Decent
If you can swarm kite, I imagine you'll be exhausted before you run out of mobs. I'd love to see that.

If you are limited to less than swarm, then you could kite, but as most have said in other posts, it is very easy to get adds.

If you are unlucky enough to pic up a caster, you're a bard, just run for zone, calling 'Train'. (prepare EB incase you need to zone into The Grey)

Your primary hinderance is the different running speeds of the mobs here.
Hunting Groups.
# Jul 14 2003 at 9:28 PM Rating: Decent
I am on the Soluesk Ro server. I am currently thinking about leading a hunting group with my guild here.

I set it for 40+. The character I will be bringing is a 44 shaman.

The questions are:

Will we be able to kill things?
Will we get experience?
Who should we stay away from?

There will be one or more groups, all 40+.

Also, will we be able to handle the guy for the Shield of Bane Warding quest?

Thanks!

In the spirit of exploration our group came here to see what it was like. Almost all comment about the place (here and elsewhere) was from soloers and we wanted to see it as a group.

Group was :-

Warrior 34
Druid 34
Shaman 36
Cleric 36
Warrior 38

We zoned in from Twilight and walked to the point where the gully walls drop and the desert spreads out to either side. The vas ren to the left were friendly and we decided to let them be. We did however pull sunflowers and lightcrawlers from in among the them - who dont aggro or assist these mobs.

In total we spent just over three hours there 2 and a half right at the gully mouth pulling cheetahs, sunflowers, lightcrawlers and the two revenants that appear just to the right. We had two pets up during the fights - one shaman doggy and another summoned from a Gnollslayer.

The creatures were straight forward for their level with malisement and slow sticking first time pretty much every time. The place we were pulling to attracted no wandering adds - but occasionally we would get an add on the pull. Loot was dire off the animal types - a few pp off the Revenants.

After 2.5 hours we moved along the wall to the right and set up between the revenant camps. No difference except we noticed an odd feature - nothing pathed close for the first 20 minutes ... then we found ourselves surrounded by red aliens, some even pathing right up to us and just standing. (We werent / arent KoS to them). We werent there long enough to draw a conclusion - but it honestly seemed like their pathing varied to take us in (obviously we were static where-as most soloers are mobile and wouldnt see this effect).

Mobs at the gully and wall conned blue through red to the 38 warrior - a quick exploration (non combat) up the plateau saw everything con red.

When we ported out we were hardly any richer - but everyone of us gained a level. Excellent XP for our levels from straight forward mobs.

50 necro can blow through these. Bust out 49 pet, hit them with shackle of spirit and dooming darkness. Don't bother with fear. Use bond of death to gain back health lost to liche form. Don't cast anything else and let the pet tank it so you can save manna.

Good idea to build faction with the aliens so that you dont get them as adds and you can concentrate on the revenants. They are the most manna efficient kill and drop some plat.

1. Wolf Form is deadly here. Everything will KOS the wolf, regardless of faction.

2. If fighting aliens and sun revenants, use Magic Resist buffs. Both classes of mob have contact procs which will eat your hp way faster than you think they should at your level. This is not a AoE attack, however, so if you are a class which uses root/snare/fear and distance attacks you should be safe from proc. (100 MR at level 53 gets me immunity from 95% of these procs. 60 MR at level 53 and I take about 800-1000 hp per Grol Baku fight in extra melee procs. Big difference.)

3. Like many zones, the walls are safer than the center. Some green mobs will still aggro in this zone (sunflower, lightcrawler, etc.) But these generally do not wander within aggro range of the walls.

4. Don't ***** up faction with *everybody*. Most people have lousy sun revenant faction, so not much to be done there. But don't **** off both the aliens and the cavemen. If you end up KOS to both you will get way more adds than you can handle at any xp-getting level.

5. There are 4 factions of aliens, but 3 of the factions are at war with the one other faction. The Tro Jeg are at war with the Grol Baku, the Vas Ren, and the Cral Ligi. So if your faction with one side becomes KOS then go hunt the other. It's much easier to single-pull from a camp of aliens who all think you are a swell person. :) Never seen the aliens fight each other, though, so don't assume they will intercede in your problems.

6. Most things cannot see through invisibility. Invis is a great way to zoom across the zone without pulling a trailing comet of aggro crap. BUT I have noticed that about 1 in 10 sun revenants will see through invisibility. Not sure which ones or why, but it's something to look out for.

7. The zone to Grieg's End is on the north wall of the Scarlet Desert. Though GE is a nasty-tough dungeon, the zone in is quite safe (unless of course a group has pulled something there). You can use GE as a safety zone. Levitation does not work in GE, so I'm not sure what happens if you zone in with a lev buff... you may lose your buff.
RE: A few things....
# Oct 10 2002 at 9:25 AM Rating: Default
Good points. As for GE, yes you lose any buffs that give lev including DMF, SOE, etc just like KK and SS.

For druids (and necros, I would think), this zone can be a loot dream for twinking alts. Here's the tactic:

Zone in and bring up invis. Now move forward about 1/2 way through the zone and bring up tracking.

Look through the list and try to eyeball unique entries. There are many types of mob here, but you will see certain mobs that only appear once, like the "furious rockhopper". These are rare spawns, but there's usualy one to three up in the zone at any given time.

Track down one of these unique mobs (note: don't try to take the reavers solo unless you're in the 50s and well equipped, they break root fast and can be casters; also stick to the ground, don't try to hunt in caves or on the mesa unless you're VERY well equipped and/or high 50s+) and figure out where you want to pull it for safety. There's usualy a safe spot nearby, but if there isn't you might consider waiting until the mob moves (unless there's competition).

Pull it and snare-kite. Most things here break root quickly, but on the bugs, plants and cheetahs root/dotting may be a better option depending on level and equipment.

They will always drop something. Most of the time it will be a Luclin quest armor drop, which can sell ok to players for 20-50p each. Don't expect them to move fast. The rare loot seems to mostly be unique to a species (e.g. rockhopper, plant, bug, etc) but can drop from any of the unique mobs of that species. It can be very nice mid-level loot. Certainly I've twinked a few alts using this stuff.

Once you've cleared the uniques in the zone you should leave because a) re-spawning the rares can take a while even if there are groups hunting in the zone and b) it gives the groups who hunt for exp a shot at some of this stuff too.

Come back from time to time and repeat. It makes a nice little diversion from long camps or a transition between grouping sessions / raids.

Boil Blood (500 pts for 150 man, Scourge (500 pts for 170), Chilling Embrace (600 pts for 200). 1600 pts for 520 mana total. That's less than 1/4 my mana at 51. With lich on while the dots works, you will die after 21 tics and I'll have less than 5 tics left to regen mana back to full or 30 secs.

I've been in this zone for only a week or so (just got a computer good enough to handle the moon without death dealing lag) and I was wondering what the system for spawns is in this zone. For instance, do the Killer Vines pop pretty much anywhere, along a certain zone wall, clear out in the middle? I've yet to see one and have been camping around all of the zone lines off and on to see what could be seen. As for the bloodtribe, do their rare spawns pop in any of the caves or only certain ones? A group I was in camped the small cave by the Grieg's End zone and nothing popped but Shamen and Warriors. Granted we only camped it for about an hour and a half before we had to log for the night. Just wondering.

The Sun Revenants dont like nature loving types even before you start to upset their faction. Our group faction on arrival was :-

Innoruuk / Human / Warrior - Dubious
Rallos / Half Elf / Warrior - Dubious
Tunare / Druid / Wood elf - Ready to Attack
Tunare / Cleric / High Elf - Ready to Attack
Agnostic / Vah Shir / Shaman - Ready to Attack

So basically they appear sympathetic to 'evil' combinations as defined by the Sullon Zek / PoK rulesets.

I failed to mention in my other post that the 5AC 3Str 10HP 10SvCold item from the Chancellor is Range slot for melees. In addition, I believe that the mobs that drop non-quest items do have both a rare and a common drop. I read a post that the Bloodtribe Wiseman drops a cloak, while I dropped him last night and got a 5 20 1hb 4int 4wis. I have also gotten an int caster shawl from the Possesed Sun Revenent, 2int.. can't remember other stats. Finding the mob that drops a Twighlight armor quest piece for your class can be a very long process here. I've spent over 8 hours in SD and have gotten 4 armor quest drops, but none have been for my class. Since they are not no-drop, I hope people hold on to all quest items they loot so some trading can occur.

There seems to be many named mobs in this zone. I have seen a sun revenat Chancellor, Smiter, possesed and Ancient. Sun Revenants appear to be the PHs. As a 53 druid I have been able to solo these ones, but was unsucessful against a named revenant called 'The Sun Priest'.. he can CH and I'm dieng to know what the cheeky monkey drops. The only drops I remember are a quest note-looking item from the Ancient and a 5ac 3str 10hp 10svcold from the chancellor. Also got a quest item from a darkened sunflower. Very curious to know what these quests items are for. The faction here is interesting... there are 4 tribes of alien looking guys. If you kill the Tro tribe, you get faciton with the other 3, vice versa.. killing one of the other 3 gets you bad faciton with all 3 and good faciton with the Tro clan. Anyone know which faction is better?
RE: Named mobs / faction

I believe you are on my server :) Often I would track down a rare only to find out that you had it hehe...

As for the aliens, I think I would prefer to being KOS only to one tribe than being KOS to 3 :) This desert has enough adds without having to worry about the darn aliens.

The Sun Priest drops a no drop item called the Amulet of Golden Rays. It is a quest item for a shield that is Ac25, wis20, cha9 and something else that I don't remember. It is one of a few other items you need to collect for it.

The rare sun revenants do seem to have 3 different drops (that I know of) on each of them. Some are the same (smiter's girdle) some are different (chancellor's medal)

The quest items you got from the ancient and the darkened sunflower are for the twilight armor quests. The vial of dark earth is for the mage quest, and the ralcom's writ is for monk leggings twilight sea quest.

As for druid pieces in this zone...

Gemmed sun revenant drops etched fire opal of nature for druid mask quest.

Agressive Rockhopper drops mark of vitality for druid sleeves.

Grol Baku Geomancer drops sack of purified soil for druid leggings.

Grol Baku Wilder drops Mark of the Wild for druid cap.

Deadly Lightcrawler drops Etched ruby of nature for bracer quest. '

Bloodtribe gem collector drops Etched peridot of nature for the druid cloak quest.

Braided sunflower drops braided vine bracelet for the druid cap quest.

Vas ren Etcher drops etched pearl of nature for druid gloves.

A Natural Cheetah drops Etched star ruby of nature for boots quest.

Whew think I got them all. You have to go to other zones to find the other pieces. From what I can tell, every time you kill one of the quest piece rares you always get the piece. IMHO though, at the level it takes to get the components all together, you probably already have better armor than the quest armor. Except maybe for the tunic.

Ok...this zone is DANGEROUS but it is great experience up to about 50 on the regular mobs a bit higher if you are doing the revanents if you are not sleepy and you know what you are doing.

I'd say anyone kiting could do so very well around the oasis assuming you have not messed up faction with the alliens there. The pathing of the mobs stays kinda clear of the water (a little bit south and west of twilight zone line, could get to zone very easy if you have trouble). This is the only place i'd advice attemting to solo in this zone cause of the number of wandering mobs. However to do this you have keep faction with the aliens. I'm not a kiter (Paladin) but i would be sure to check for flowers and lightcrawlers before starting the kite or any agro...they hang arround everywhere in this zone, and will add to everything easily.

Matter of fact, I believe faction in this zone is the main focus. There is a sunlord faction with the ninjas (i'll get to how hard these guys are later), bloodtribe faction with the cavemen, and at least 2 alien factions. I only started KOS to the revenants and i'd advice to keep it that way till you are pretty "ubber." If you are fighting the numerous flowers, rockhoppers, lightcrawlers, cheetahs, etc..you don't want any aliens, cavement etc adding.

Another comment is that the southern part of the zone is relatively safer than the north. The north has the revenants roming, and for less than 50 just don't hunt here. Also, there is a plateau with some revanatnts on it. Might be a good camp if you can pull them single, but 2 revants is pretty much death unless some good play happens. You can't run very easily cuase it is straight fall off the plateau....would have to lev down, maybe a good idea to have lev on all the time during this camp.

Revanents = Deadly! They are undead, but don't get happy pals, their magic resistance is so high they will resist your procs and undead nukes. They have their own curse procs, the sun revanants procs "sun revanents curse" and the sun reavers have their own ones. They hit quickly in 80-110 range on me and will mellee you down easy. Only side i've seen on them that's nice is that necros fear kite them well...but no good place to kite these (they are not by the water oasis). The Reavers are harder, they will fear you and nuke you for 150 in addtion to what i've allready talked about for the sun revs..they still hit in 100s. Me and a 49 mage hunt them pretty well, but the first thing that is done is the magic resistance debuff then my nife procs and his nukes have full effect and revs and reavers fall...but beware....you willl get flower, cheetah, and lightcrawler adds inevitably..make sure you have mob control ability.

Hope this helps keep the deaths out of this zone...my tally is up to 4 already
