The Hole is also known as Old Paineel, the first stronghold of the Heretics, and has long been taken over Elementals and their ilk.

For the longest time, the Hole was rumored to house the entrance to the Underfoot... This is, of course, no longer a rumor.

Cliknar, everywhere

As of right now, there are at least a couple dozen 'a cliknar invader' engaged in a 'fight'(just all of them scripted to play the attack animation) with Guardian of the Seal and two 'an Animated Construct'. They all con indifferent, but the Cliknar WILL assist each other. The Cliknar also hit for around 4000~. When killed, they seem to instantly decay and respawn after 10-15 minutes.

Was wondering if Nortlav the Scalekeeper still exists after they revamped the Hole? According to EQAtlas, if you look at the map, he is supposed to be at #7 room (but then so is Master Yael and was told he no longer exixts) If Nortlav does exist, how do you get there because if you swim the lake, there is a waterfall which if you go over it, it causes 200K damage - so obviously going over the falls isn't an option. If anyone can answer these questions, please help me out asap. Thanks a bunch. Rognar (and Lizzy)

This jump no longer kills. I went over the waterfall/ledge just a few days
ago and landed with no damage. No mobs either, but lots of "corpse of dead
adventurer" laying around and a swirling mist that is now a zone-in to
"Brell's Rest" (probably the location where the locked door to the "Plane of Underfoot"
used to sit)

Quicky summary, is that Yael killed Nortlav, the gnome got mad and created the guardian to kill yael, and guard the door to underfoot.
Nortlav is still down there, as the "echo of" Nortlav.

If you don't want to fight all the way down, and have a means to invuln, you can hop in from the hole in paineel. Just be sure to jump first, zone, then invuln. Otherwise, since it's now in the short buff box, it will fade the moment you zone.

I think the waterfall method worked because the water was "just" deep enough to land in. But since you move forward a tad while falling, you back up over the fall so that you creep back toward it as you fall, landing in the water.

back in the day, if you walk (not run) down the waterfall backwards and very slowly (well that is , fall down backwards i guess), you could fall into the pool without taking the fall damage, not sure if that works anymore but that's what i used to do.

that's where Echo of Nortlav spawns, lookin at him now.
"new" mob
# May 11 2007 at 2:48 PM Rating: Decent
A "Dented Construct" - gray to a 65 spawns near the temple area. It dropped "Mud Covered Chain Legwraps"

Pretty sure it is one of the (now old) Hot Zone mobs. It is a super low level mob compared to the others in the area, it probably should have spawned near the massive constructs.

Has always been the door there, but just for storyline. The event surrounding it with the opening of the Hole is detailed on the soe site still I think.
A guide/gm key can open it, and it goes to a dead end.

Squeezing through
# Dec 09 2005 at 8:34 AM Rating: Decent
I have often taken a dwarf or a halfling into The Hole by squeezing through the crack above the door. However, a week or two ago I tried to do the same squeeze I have done many, many times, but could not for the life of me get through the crack.

Yep, using the same characters that have done it before, doing it the same way, in the same place, etc. I've done it many times, but it didn't work the last time I tried.

Have they made the crack impassable? Did my dwarf put on a little too much weight? Just bad luck? Anybody else notice this recently?

May 15, 2005:

High Scale Kirn spawned on the third floor of the castle, /loc -21, 264, -243. You need a key to open the door, link here, and elsewhere on the forums I read that the doors cannot be lockpicked, but I cannot confirm. Was extremely easy with level 63 Shaman and Qvik-geared 70 monk.

June 15 2005 update.

I 3 boxed my 66 Monk 63 Shaman and 61 Mage to Kirn. We are all mid bazzar geared, nothing great. Ancient Construct, Old Construct and Ruined Gargoyle the "mini named" all dropped the key you need for Kirns room. And yes, getting to Kirn is 10,000 times harder than the fight with Kirn himself. There were two "safe spots" I used to pull to. I say that in quotes because they do contain a roamer or two but that is nothing compared to the adds you will get here usually.

The first spot was behind the blasted doors, in the tunnel. Only one roaming construct here. Pull from the building Kirn is in to here until you can get up the stairs to the "Courtyard" with The Ghost of Kindle who will not bother you. Right where she is standing is the second safe spot to pull from Kirns tower to.

One word of warning. The Gargoyles on the walls will aggro sometimes, especially if a group member is lower than level 60 or so. So you may want to pull them too.

Respawns are fast here so I suggest pulling until your group can progress up the stairs without getting more adds than you can handle.

When in Kirns room, clear the mobs around him before giving him the icon. He is indifferent and will not attack until you hand it to him. He does run at low health.

The hole has become incredibly easy after the revamp. My group (me as a 60 paladin, 58 druid, 58 beastlord, 56 enchanter) made it all the way to The Ghost of Kindle without a death. They key is to know where you are going and what you can handle. We mainly dealth with single pulls, with the occassional double. Best thing is to move fast enough to prevent repops from hurting, but that is just my thoughts. Watch out for gargoyles cause they seem to agro at the worst times.

Nope.
At one point if you jumped in it would spit you out in Toxx, but after that it killed you and made for a nasty CR, (w/o the friendly neighbornood...), before the modern day conviences. It was great to watch everyone try new ideas: "I can do it with lev....oh yah, jump!...aaaaaaaa splat, I can do it invuln....aaaaaa splat, I have max safe fail...aaaaaa splat", you get the idea, and I get a fond memory to laugh at =) That was back in the Master Yael era. Looks like after the more rescent revamp they may have eased this up too, gonna have to go make a baby cleric on some server and try jumping again - Geronimo! =)

Hi i was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about "a templebound spirit". My group ran into him last night and we got wiped...the cleric's heal spells wouldn't take on any of the group. Not sure if it was a zone bug or something from the Mob, any information would be appreciated.
RE: help
# Jul 17 2004 at 6:11 PM Rating: Default
Late reply... I think that particular night there was a servers-wide bug that prevented any spells from being cast (my group in PoN wiped, no heals, evac, etc). However, we just last weekend went down to the castle area and killed several of these without issue. The spirits are easier to kill with a standard (tank, cleric, enc + dps) group than the constructs or gargoyles in the same area.

A Stone Ward
# Feb 12 2004 at 12:26 PM Rating: Default
Took my Dwarf Cleric here today, and dropped down the Hole from paineel with Divine Aura up. The Guardian was up, and conned indif to me, but killed me when I tried the Seal. When I dropped down again to res my corpse, and try to scout the way out from there, I ran into a mob called a Stone Ward, which seems to be either an undead mob, or NOT on Brell faction, as he killed me straight away with out me ever getting a good look at him. Has anyone else ever seen this mob?

LOL I did the same thing. In my low 40's I accidently fell off the side and hit the bottom of the pit with the expected 10k damage and got a free trip to my bind. Not being discouraged and being too cheap to buy the key I went off the edge again with DMF and popped off Harmshield right before I zoned. Landed and instantly got attacked, me being a DE necro, in the middle of trying to loot first corpse. Another trip to bind.

Round 3

Dropped back down, again, and was able to get Feign Death off after harmshield dropped after being attacked to half hp. Looted the second corpse while the Guardian AND Stone Ward were out of aggro taking a little more damage. Went for the orginal corpse and got attacked again but this time FD failed twice on me, back to bind point, again.

Round 4

Bought 2 coffins, squeezed through crack in pool, and paid a friendly cleric 100p for 2 96 rezzs at the zoneline and haven't been back since lol.

So yes I have seen the Stone Ward but between both of them attacking me, trips to bind, and alot of wasted time and effort over trying to save 150p all I can report is he does exist and he definetly doesn't like DE Necros.

The Key to the Hole
# Nov 30 2003 at 2:26 PM Rating: Decent
Hey all can someone tell me how to get the key to the hole entrance in the Grotto near the warrens? In the EQ Atlas site it says that it can be purchased in Paineel but doesn't say where or from whom. So, if some kind soul would give me that information I would love to check out that zone. Being a level 54 Necro with very nice faction in Paineel proper I should be able to at least check it out without too much difficulty. I am in a high level guild so could take a few of them with me and just scout around some. Thanks for the info.

Just squeeze through the rocks at the bottom of the pool. With EB effect of DMF it shouldn't be a problem I've done it with my DE Necro many times it just takes a few tries to get through.
RE: The Key to the Hole

You don't really need a key. Just shrink yourself twice, or get some freindly Shammy or Beastie to shrink you, and then you can squeeze through the crack at the upper right of the locked door.
RE: The Key to the Hole
# Dec 29 2003 at 10:08 PM Rating: Decent
I bought the key as a ranger by running in invis and sneaking at the merchant. Could get a little hairy if invis drops on the way through...
RE: The Key to the Hole
# Dec 10 2003 at 9:38 AM Rating: Decent
Sure ... firs thing to do is Consider the skele guards in the newbie area there .. the little field.

If your faction is above Dubious, then you can go into Paineel city and see the merchant there in the Superior Supply store (the woman in there) and buy your key for ~150pp

Even if you are not KOS in Paineel, the merchants won't sell to you, like ALL merchants, if you don't have decent faction.

To get faction, slaughter Kobolds in The Warrens for several days. The King, Prince and Priest are great faction, so kill them as soon as they pop.

EDIT: The key is a BAG

If I remember correctly from leveling my erudite enchanter in the Warrens for several seasons, you have to have at least indifferent faction to get the key to the city from the skeleton guard. I think I got my base to dubious and then cast Alliance to get to indif, and was able to get the key.
