The Hole is also known as Old Paineel, the first stronghold of the Heretics, and has long been taken over Elementals and their ilk.

For the longest time, the Hole was rumored to house the entrance to the Underfoot... This is, of course, no longer a rumor.

Withered Drops
# Sep 02 2001 at 8:22 PM Rating: Default
Have withered shoulders, boots and wrist item, they dropped off the revenants just past the pool room. Have also looted several full sets of loam for pure casters in my guild. Not to mention sevearl smouldering brands and earthen blades. We normally hunt with a group of 6 and often go as deep ad the room beyond the pool. This is a great zone for exp, and the drops are great.

today was my first experience with the hole. i was kinda pokeing around and lookn for the way to the sk nec noob area and found the ledge to panieel well i traveled a little to close to the edge trying to look into the pit and fell to my death 10000 pt fall. so i made my way back to the edge (killed a bat along the way for a bat wing) got to the ledge cast lev and invis on my self and walked off the edge, floated down a bit and zoned into the hole the lev shut off and i fell to my death 10000 pt damage fall. i was starting to think every thing on me was gonna sit at the bottom of that pit,but theres a way to get your corpse back, you need to get a nec that can summon your corpse, right above the door to the hole theresa small hole ,swim in the hole and duck down then wiggle around abit till your in as soon as you zone in stay all the way to the left
and swim around till you get to a small ledg you can stay there while your bud summons you corpse

Scalekeeper??
# Jun 09 2001 at 8:02 PM Rating: Default
Guild raided to get some epic items out of the way and decided at the completion of the Shaman epic part of zone to take out Master Yael. Set up for the run in as usual, drew lots to see which of us would draw the DT from Yael, and proceeded to take care of business. Yael dropped quite easily with our team of 26. Once he was slain and as we were celebrating the completion to our trip on a high note, this NPC (Scalekeeper-an Erudite that can lifetap for 1500 and hits for 250 a whack suddenly began attacking select members of our team one by one. He made very short work of us all in the space of 5 minutes tops. Never seen this guy before and was wondering if anyone else may know his purpose there?

NOTE: He was indifferent con to most of us in our initial run and did not attack us during the killing of Yael. However, once a Flighty Fiend decided to agro us, he jumped in and suddenly many of us became KOS. We are estimating this guy is even tougher than Yael, making him the NEW boss mob in the Hole. No idea about HPs, since none of us stayed alive long enough to find out.

Loot table
# May 28 2001 at 6:29 AM Rating: Decent

Most of the gear in this zone is on a random loot table. What that means is that there's a rare chance for *any* mob to drop good loot. If you spent time hunting in Dalnir, you know how this works -- you have to go to a specific place for a fighting baton but a sap of piety, brass goblin flamberge, charred tulwar, etc can come off anything, even if you're just hunting at the entrance. Similarly in the Hole, there are some that require killing specific mobs; Rocksoul seems to be one of these, for instance, to get a Loam Encrusted Cap for your friendly neighborhood enchanter. But last night, in about 3.5 hours, we saw

1 smoldering brand
1 earthen axe
1 loam cap (Rocksoul)
4 elemental binders (common drop when the server is being stingy)
enough research items to wallpaper Sebilis
lots of stuff for dyes and tradecrafts

And we were hunting for xp, not loot, so we were just pulling things as they came, with a party (11-15 people split into 2-3 groups) that could get the xp from the hunt.

Lesson: kill everything. Also, unless you've got a specific goal, there's probably not a huge incentive to bury yourself in the dungeon. Although you need an evac to get out anyhow, so there's probably not much incentive to live near the entrance =).

... can NOT necessarily travel through the zone at will. I'm a gnomish cleric of Brell and had *never* done anything to the Underfoot empire before heading down there... but absolutely everything was KoS for me. There were two little halfling rogues that were not KoS, though, and at level 1 were obviously mules created to help with corpse recovery. We saw quite a few naked dwarf corpses, so I think the halflings are actually the way to go.

I have one of the mules that you speak of. he is a halfling rogue that worships brell. He has become so popular that he has actually become a fond character of mine. I perform corpse retrievals for a fee. A fee I will never spend, but a fee just the same. He is even in a guild with a good reputation. I know that zone like the back of my hand, assuming that it is not behind a locked door.

The elementals do not agro on me even when they con "Ready to Attack." The Golems are Dubious. Rat Warriors and the Reverents attack on site.

walking free among most in the zone
# May 26 2001 at 8:54 PM Rating: Default
ok, for any dwarf cleric, or so i think, they can walk FREELY among most of the lower creatures in this zone. Im a dwarf celric and i had a bit of a delma that involved me going down there. ended up only the rats attacked me, well, out of four races there (glomes, elementals, and the ratties, and the fire imp looking things). so if u worship brell, im assuming that you can walk freely through here b4 u get hit with faction. hope this helps some of you =)

I have been to the Hole several times, but have yet to get very far in. (Ratmen is far as we got) The XP here is amazing and so my group goes back pretty often and hunt the zone in, but we have yet to see any Withered Leather drop. Someone told me it drops DEEP (nice descriptor there) Does anyone know EXACTLY which mobs drop this stuff, and where those mobs are actually located?

Ok, I've hunted and hunted for this guy, but haven't seen him. Where exactly does he spawn? I've searched the ghost area of the city pretty thoroughly-- anyone seen him? And if so, what does he spawn near?

My thanks.

Falling in
# Mar 17 2001 at 5:04 PM Rating: Decent
Now say you're a level 22 Druid and you happen to fall off the ledge near the entrance to Paineel and end up at the bottom of the Hole. How would one go about retrieving thier corpse? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

PS I know it's a stupid thing to do, but what if?
RE: Falling in
# Jul 08 2001 at 8:47 PM Rating: Default
guys, the question was why, not how to get the body out. anyway, its an optional thing, so run the optional patch.
RE: Falling in
# Jun 11 2001 at 4:08 PM Rating: Default
Create a level 1 halfling rogue worshipping Brell, consent it, hide+sneak, and go down to your corpse. It's gonna be a looong trip but fun.

I started an erudite SK just for the heck of it. I figured it might be cool to jump in and check out the hole. But when i jumped in EQ just simply closed to the desktop, when i restarted EQ and went back to my character EQ exited to the desktop. I would appreciate any info on why its doing this.

Well ... if this was to happen to someone, not that we are saying it has. You could go find a nice high level necro, give the nice necro some money to buy a coffin (for the corpse, as in the body now laying at bottom of the hole). If the necro does not have a key to the locked rock entry, maybe give em the money to buy the key also. Then you enter the hole with the necro, thru the locked rock entry, and the nice necro will summon your corpse using the coffin. Remember necros are great at finding lost corpses, even the ones that you know are just laying around at the bottom of the hole. Not that a now level 51 Druid would ever have fallen down into the hole also, but just going along with the what if .... rofl.

If you are really lucky, then someone will be raiding the hole... If that is the case, they might drag your body to the ledge in the entry room from the underwater tunnel. Also, you dont have to have a key to enter-even up to human size. It is possible to wiggle through the rocks entering the underwater tunnel from Paineel (and exit). Not that this Level 21 Ranger would have fallen in the hole just looking in...:)

Hi all

There´s a named Mob missing in the list here, his name is Nortlav the Scalekeeper, he´s near the entrance to Castle, and he wiped out 6 full groups of 50+ ;) ( admitted, we were a bit short on tanks ). He conned Yellow to a 54.
Piece of my log:

Nortlav the Scalekeeper was hit by non-melee for 20 points of damage.
Nortlav the Scalekeeper slashes YOU for 229 points of damage.
Nortlav the Scalekeeper was hit by non-melee for 20 points of damage.
Nortlav the Scalekeeper slashes YOU for 229 points of damage.
You feel a tugging at your soul.
You have been slain by Nortlav the Scalekeeper!

It s true about this guy he is very harmful and the only things that make him not be a dragon is his look he erudite SK do AE for 1500 or so and melee for 229 with (the only time i got deep enough to see him a huge 2hs , don t ask me which one though ) i think our raid could have killed him if we had dragon prep but it was few minute after having rezed all those who died off the jump and we was fighting 4 other mobs i was amazed when i ve seen our 2 warlord die in hmm 5second each no more and then he kept spamming us with Target has been slain by Nortlav the scalekeeper every 2 second it was really amazing how fast each person droped ;) Though i m not saying at all that he is not takable but i advise to be well prepared before trying him ;) He was indiff to me but attack u as soon as u attack anything in ur agro range :(

the sword he has is a rusty throne blade. it has to be some quest item is all i could figure. super super tuff , he has a proc 1500 point life tap. just when you think you got him dead he rips off a few procs and sends it into over time.

Dartain the Lost
# Dec 08 2000 at 9:24 AM Rating: Decent
There is an NPC named Dartain the lost, he is not listed here. If you go past the keeper of the tombs there is a room down there with one wall that looks caved-in. When you click on the rocks it says you need a key to open it, but small races can duck/stand to get past them. On the other side is an NPC named Dartain the lost, he casts spells, but has no pet, dunno what class or level he is, but he looks like a normal erudite. Anyone know what he is for?

Paineel/Erudin legend has it this guy "sealed" Old Paineel by staying behind to cause a cave-in or something. He saved the surviving Heretics and is considered a hero in Paineel. *at least from what I've been able to piece together from VI history and talking with NPCs in Paineel*

May be Quest NPC or only local color.

Master Yael
# Nov 24 2000 at 2:49 AM Rating: Decent
Master Yael killed me (instantly) while i was attempting to camp under the water near the zone entrance/exit (well, it seemed safe at the time since I have singing steel gauntlets). He shouted my name, and I was instantly dead--no damage, no spell effects, just "Welcome back to Level 51". Where exactly is he in Hole? He did not appear to be anywhere near us, we didn't aggro him, and we were the only people in the Hole at that time.
RE: Master Yael
# Apr 22 2001 at 2:47 AM Rating: Default
yeah its weird must be a bard thing because soon as we zoned in he summoned our bard and insta killed him. we had to wait almost 3 hours for a GM to come get his corpse(yeah no necros on our raid)
RE: Master Yael
# Dec 27 2000 at 11:03 PM Rating: Default
I dunno how this happened because Master Yael is at the VERY bottom of the Hole in the far corner, this is a very far distance from the top
RE: Master Yael

Zone is wierd that way sometimes... But the big MY can death-touch every 30 seconds or so... That's why you died instantly.

# Sep 28 2001 at 1:43 AM Rating: Default
Master Yael can summon a player directly do him...
