North Karana is the "nexus" of the Karana Plains. Despite the dangers of the roaming lions, wolves, bears, griffons, and occasional hill giant, this place is quite the player-friendly area: Here, you'll find a few guard watch towers for aid, a gypsy camp with vendors, and a druid ring and wizard spires for porting.

Speaking of guard watch towers, North Karana is home to what may be the most active guards in all of Norrath. The tower in the center of the zone is in the path of many a wandering animal and keeps its guards fighting off trouble on a steady basis. They win most of their battles, but occasionally lose, particularly when the opponent is an upper level hill giant, griffon, or GrimFeather.

mysterious blue beam
# Mar 15 2006 at 10:50 PM Rating: Decent
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. While trying to rack up the experience in north karana something strange happened. while in a fight with a fire beetle a blue beam came from the sky and instantly killed me. i don't have any bad faction with people in north karana, so don't know what may have caused this. please help, i can't even find my body now; it seems to have disappeared...

Dire Animals
# Sep 28 2004 at 4:46 PM Rating: Decent
The dire griffon spawns the plains dragon as a trigger rather than a PHer. The plains dragon is part of the bard epic 1.5. The same holds true for the other dire animals: they're all part of the bard epic 1.5.

Went out to hunt highland lions last night and ran into the Dragon has he spawned in. Got a lvl 47 warrior from my guild to come and help kite him. Things went wrong from the word go. His scream takes 1500hp and strips you of your first 2 buffs. Then if your close he hits for 600-650hp. Which easily took out the warrior. This mod is going to need raided. If anyone drops him please post what he drops i am very curious.

A Dire Panda- Stonebrunt Mountains
A Dire Leech- Swamp of No Hope
A Dire Griffon- North Karana
A Dire Kodiak- Jagged Pine

These are all level 65 and con indifferent. I hope this helps with some puzzle pieces. Rangers had to find 6 sick animals. I would assume there are 2 other dire animals out there to add to this list. Possibly druid epic? I haven't found any epic information linked to them yet.

The 4 Dire animals are for the bard epic 1.5. There are only 4. While attacking them, a dragon will spawn in the place of the animal.

Just sitting in the wizard spire waiting...
I saw a wisp fly by and thought I would check for a lightstone. It wasn't a normal wisp. It was named "Flighty Azure Wisp". It conned red to me at 26. Has anyone else seen it or killed it? I would love to know what it drops!

This little fella does not show up on tracking. If you want to see it, just look for wisp that acts drunk. When you see it, you will know what I mean.

A dire griffon = a planes dragon
# Sep 15 2004 at 5:00 AM Rating: Decent
Ok so...i kited a dire griffon around...got him to 80, he depopped and "a planes dragon" popped in his place. Yellow con to me at 66. Not KoS. Guess my models are messed up, cause it looks like a human.

anyways, he hits for 1900...dunno if thats an accurate number, i only let it hit me once and zoned.

AE is a 2 slot debuff, and atleast 1500 dd...cause thats the most it hit me for

gonna get guild to kill it tommorrow i hope lol

Dire Griffon
# Sep 15 2004 at 1:33 AM Rating: Decent
Bumped into a rather unpleasant griffon that I had never seen before. It was a dire griffon wandering the northern pafrt of the zone. He conned red to me (lvl 45 Ranger). Thinking I could fear kite him I tried to snare, he is VERY fast and hits in the 400's. One quad got me to 50% so I took off running for my life. I am guessing that he is either a task mob or epic mob. Either way it's something you should think twice about attacking on your own.
RE: Dire Griffon

oh yeah, forgot one thing, he cannot be snared or have any change in speed.

The Fabled Stormfeather
# Mar 25 2004 at 4:38 PM Rating: Good
The Fabled Grimfeather spawns in North Karana, hit me for 528 max, and dropped Rune of Ivy and;

Fabled Crafted Vambrances
Ac: 21
Str: 7, Sta: 6, HP: 45, Mana: 20, Endurance: 30
Svdisease: 5, Svpoison: 5

wt: 6.5 size: small
Class: war, clr, pal, rng, shd, brd, rog, shm, ber
race: all
slot 1, type 7

He conned yellow to a level 53, mitigated 65 shammy slow, and took about a minute to kill with a 65 shammy, 65 ranger, 53 rogue, and 52 monk. Summons.

FYI he can't be snared or rooted. Found out the hard way trying to solo him with just a 55 druid, thought maybe I could just DOT him to death. Was my first experience with a fabled MOB. I did outrun him with SOE on though so a bard may be able to kite him. Not sure of his HPs though.

I killed him twice today. 528 max damage on me also but I think he only doubled not trippled or quad attacked so wasn't that bad. He summons like Dartaemus says, also enrages, no flurry, no rampage.

What is the place holder for the Hill Giants in North Karana?
38 rnager
# Feb 01 2003 at 11:00 PM Rating: Default
Is this a good place for a 38 ranger to hunt griffons and hill giants? in other words, does fear kiting work on the griffs and are giants easy to solo? thx
RE: 38 rnager
# May 23 2003 at 2:27 PM Rating: Decent
You might want to bounce between N & E Karanas to get the most of hunting those critters as the Giants tend to come out around night in N.K and griffs can pop up rather infrequently since they are spawned when griffenes are killed which spawn when griffawns are killed. E.K. has the 3-spawn level cyclops family by the bridge to N.K as well as a hill that tends to become infested with hill giants, which are lower than in NK but more plentiful. So try between the two and see what's good for you.

PS when getting arrows you can earn a bit of coin and even some exp (but now much as ony 1 or two critters will even be light blue) as there are centaurs and most all will have 4 arrows on them and the lower level ones you should be able to melee or even if you want to make your own there is Ulan Meadowngreen in S.K. centaur village. People also sell looted ones they can't use back to Ulan or in the aviak village
RE: 38 rnager
# Apr 29 2003 at 3:39 AM Rating: Decent
Yes, you can fearkite the griffs, I'm getting a half a blue off them at 41.

The giants are better to root rot with Stinging swarm and plunking them with arrows. I go through about 100 per HG, so stock up. There are 2 places in EK to buy arrows.

Hope this helps.
Do or do not...

Solod this badboy as a 40 Pally. He hit me with a 400+ nuke to start. I was casting 94pt undead nukes and had instrument of nife buff on. Had to use lay hands, but he went down and left me with 1 bubble mana and 2 bubbles life. I AM quite twinked so that may have helped.

Were Werewolves?

Are the werewolves still in NK or is it now just that big nasty one that moved to SK?

Does Grimtooth still hang around?
I've heard about a spare were or two hanging out by the nasties camp up north

killed him tonight- he was chasing after a druid who obviously had trouble- when i caught up to him and distracted him - he had full health- anyways- i sliced and diced him and cast firestrike twice (302 dam each time)- once he feared me- and lost my wolf form- but overall he was pretty easy- he tries to run too- when he is down to low health- so i shot a few arrows into him for fun- i only lost less than 2 bubs of health- and I am a 52 Ranger- so he is takeable- and i dont really have any uber items-

take a look- i guess he will be spawning alot more often now- but it would be nice to know what the hell the feather is for :)

I fought this Mob tonight and did indeed snared it, at first I had heard that it was very magic resistant and recruited the help of two guildies ( a 54 Rogue and a 44 Enchanter). Plan was for me to snare to draw aggro and nuke so rogue could BS, Cast ensnare , which hit first time, then cast Calo ( hit for 65 =P), the rogue drew aggro and finished the Griffon off at 95% health
RE: Silver Griffon
# Sep 15 2004 at 1:55 AM Rating: Decent
OK just to straight this out. The Silver Griffon CANNOT be snared, it can't have any change in movement speed, this is not a resist, this is an everytime thing. Grimfeather CAN be snared and feared. The Silver Griffon Feather is used in an incomplete (as far as i know) druid tunic quest based in JPF. As for The Silver Griffon himself, he is an SK not an animal so can't be feared, once engaged, he will HT you for 401 hps, he can fear and sludge you. I took him down at lvl 44, I am fairly well geared and I know he can't be snared so I start off with swarm of pain, then stack it with stinging swarm and get ready for the ht. I can finish him off and still have 50% hps, the ht is the only REAL dps he has, once that's don't he doesn't land a lot of hits on me, of course I have a 31% worn haste and a clicky 20% haste so I'm fast as hell.

I got the immune to changes in movement messages when attempting to snare with Largo as a bard. I still have no idea what it's for. It has dropped the Silver Griifon Feathers for me both times. The ID as strands of woven moonlight FYI.
"griff spawn cycle"

I have hunted a while in North Karana, focusing on griffennes whose blood I need for cultural smithing. I noted several things :

- Griffs tend to be on what I would call a specific "griff spawn cycle". Keep them all down, and new ones will spawn (including, apparently, The Silver Griffon). That means : if you need griffennes, keep killing faws & fons, and you will eventually get them.
- Griffenne blood isn't that rare and isn't worth crazy prices people sometimes ask at the Bazaar. Get a tracker friend and go hunt them yourself. I got 5 bloods in 1 hour or so. And I only killed about 10-12 fennes & fons.
- Griffons DO drop Griffenne blood also.

( - I think Griffennes are female griffs :), Griffons being the males, and Griffawns being the babies. So what about Commonlands' griffins ? :) )
