The Paludal Caverns are a network of fungus and mold-ridden caves located beneath Hollowshade Moor. In addition to the usual lineup of creatures you'd find in such an area, there are also a few camps of Recondite bandits established here.

Massive Sediment Delver
# Jun 19 2003 at 8:27 AM Rating: Decent
While leveling my necro off of the muck diggers and sediment delvers near the dwarf miners, 'a massive sediment delver' spawned. He conned red at 17. Anyone knows if this drops anything special?
50+ exp

A couple of you have seen the dwarven miners in the back of the zone. well my friend a 56 cleric said they conned blue to him. So me ( 51 shaman ) and a 51 paladin went over to check it out. pally pacifyed them all and tryed to single....well he pulled them all..so he ran and zoned and i followed him. i had no agro so i didnt zone but i started hailing the Overslo to keep him there. so my pally buddy gets back and we start fightin him. slow lands first try, resisted Malosi alot, eventually stuck it then stuck plague and ebolt, i had to reslow twice over the course of the fight, and i had to re ebolt close to 10 times and replague more like 5. my pally friend said he didnt resist many stuns and he managed to stick root every time. it took us a loooong time cause they have massive hp. but in the end we killed him and i got 2% of normal exp! and pally got 2.% in aa. dropped some random nodrop norent helm. but it was amazing exp.
Love/Hate

I am slowly but surely developing a love/hate relationship with this zone.

I have never taken a character through this zone. My necro was level 40ish when Luclin came out, and I soloed my monk in various other zones until level 40.

Now I have a rogue, and while I can solo, I'd prefer to group because a) its easier b) I get better exp (less down time, faster killing) c) I get to do my job.

When I hit 14, I was at a loss for where to go. I asked my guild... I got "Paludal" as a resounding response. So I went to Paludal. /ooc'd LFG, waited around while killing blues.. got some pretty good exp, but no group. So I left, and went to NK and soloed beetles and anything else that conned blue. Came back at 15... still no group. Went to Oasis and Crushbone, dinged 16. Went to Paludal again, same story. So I got exasperated and /ooc'd for people to tell me *when* I could come and get a group. They said I should be able to get one starting at 17. So I went back and soloed Oasis... got 17, still no group.

I do see the exp here... I can imagine that in a fast killing group it must just fly by. But I'm running out of places to go. Soloing is only slightly viable, as I have a good bit of downtime. Apparently nobody my level goes anywhere other than PC because all the 15-20 zones there were before are now empty, and there are always 30+ people in PC.

I take all my 9-18 toons to Kurn's tower. 20% exp bonus, easy to solo, and clerics, druids, and shammies love this place cause they can solo. There's always a heal to be had and lots of buffs, and I often find a group or at least a partner here. After 18-20, exp falls off, THEN I go to PC.

I love grouping there. I have a lvl 21 Shaman Vah Shir. And you don't have to get there via Hollowshade. Go via Nexus then to Shadow Haven to Paludal. No dealing with crap from Hollowshade. And much faster.

I keep myself bound in PoK because I can get anywhere much faster than from my city and such. Not to mention get kei back before I go retreive my body if I die. lmao

Now there is an easier way for low levels to get to Paludal and survive a bit..take the Pok book to Shadeweavers and enter Paludal from that side. Once in, the closest mobs are the 4-10 level beetles, and further in, some of thelow level schrooms.
There is a litle bit of a run from the Pok book to the Paludal ent, and the possibility of a few mobs to tangle with, so take Sow in a bottle with you. With your back to a zone line and non-aggro mobs, you can med and survive better until your levels increase and still get the xp benefit of Paludal!. Pigsfist, 14 Rogue/Ayonae Ro

Every character I've attempted to bring through to Hollowshade has died. I brought my main out to try and bust through, but those accursed fiends and Shiknar are everywhere. They're social, they're mad, and they're not going to take it anymore. For lowbies(and midlevels), here are the perils of a stroll to Hollowshade:

-When you first enter, watch out for Yelloweyes. If you're not strong enough, he'll eat you alive and make you watch him gnaw your bones. He spawns just over the first hill from the tunnel where you first enter, on the left side. Just step around him.
-You're still not in the clear. When you walk through those camps, stay through the middle like you were walking a trapeze. If you aggro some bandits, you will either die or have to deal with the complaints of the people in the camp.
-Walk up the ramp towards the right. Now you see the fungal fiends! Aren't they cute? They WILL aggro, and unless you kill them quick, they'll use Spreading Crud on you, which is a slow but killer DoT. If one aggros on you, you better start shouting for a Cure Disease(unless you can Cure Disease yourself)
-Bravo! You've hopefully avoided the Fungal Fiends. Now, go into the tunnels. The sheer labyrinth design of these things is enough to kill you if you aren't careful. On your merry little stroll to Hollowshade, there will be several pools teeming with both Plerg and Patog Phlarg Fiends. Avoid these at all costs; it's alot harder to get a cure disease if you're lost.
-The tunnels are no walk in the park: they're a walk in the tunnels. The beetles that go through here pose little threat, but the blue praying-mantis type guys(outcast ShikNar) will run through you. Although they're low level, they share the fearless characteristic of skeletons, and will attack you regardless of level. Even that might not be so bad, were it not for their vast numbers. They're EVERYWHERE, and you better believe they don't want you killing their friends. Walk around them, but trying to avoid them is a lost cause. If one or two aggro on you, kill them, rest a minute, use a heal or two on yourself if you're a healing class, and start trying to avoid them again. I found that running past them at full speed seems to help you avoid aggro, if only a little bit. They don't have that long an aggro range, so you can most likely get somewhat close to them. Just watch out when you walk by them, the small width of the tunnels can be murder.
-If you got to Hollowshade, good job! Give yourself a pat on the back.

Um, if you're a race that is not KoS to Vah Shir (or if you can invis yourself), you can take the PoK stone (labeled Shar Vahl) to Shadeweaver's Thicket and go through Shar Vahl itself to get to Hollowshade. You can even go around the outside (but don't fall off the cliff) in case you're afraid your invis will drop. As an Erudite Necro, I am not KoS there...

There's no such thing as a race that's KoS to Vah Shir's...unless you kill guards and stuff, and ruin your faction with them. But, if your headed to PC, then chances are you aren't KoS w/ them, because as the PC levels (15-25) your not gonna have killed guards, or rather any Vah Shir's runnin on the Vah Shir faction.

I just managed to find the exit to Hollowshade Moor after killing the Reishicyben two days ago. You are correct in that the fiends and the shiknars are a nuisance, but what you have to do is this: fight one, move ahead a few steps, fight another, repeat until you arrive at your destination. If you just run like a bat out of hell through the tunnels, you're going to end up pulling a monster of a train and if other players are nearby when you die, they won't be very happy with you when you return for your corpse. When I came back in from Hollowshade to go to Shadowhaven, I cast Camoflage on myself while I was still outside and prayed it wouldn't drop before I got through because Camo can only be cast outdoors, but it can be carried with you when you zone to an indoor zone. It worked well, so I guess they can't see through invis type spells, so casting invis on yourself or having someone cast it on you, could be a good strategy for fast passage through without stopping. Rogues could probably get away with hide/sneak, but walking instead of running would take forever.

Went from 16 to 18 in a few hours
# Feb 13 2003 at 9:46 AM Rating: Decent
I took my 16 Druid (4 bulbs in to 16) and spent two 2 hour sesions pulling the mushroom that can be found when you zone in from Shadowhaven and is at the top of the ramp going down. I used snare, then ran towards the Shadowhaven zone and then dotted with flame lick, then grasping roots, then stinging swarm, then aoe with hailstones, then ignite. Sit for a minute to get some mana back and let the dots work then work on my melee skills (offense and defense and dodge got much better). Not much loot at all but GREAT XP. At 16 some of the mushrooms were red and at 18 some of the mushrooms are yellow. Fighting this way I did manage to take out some bandits that were trained to the zone. I then sit and mana up and rebuff myself and then the next mushroom pops.

Only thing is, newbies can't fight in Paludal. The levels are too high. And why would they come to Luclin to hunt bandits for newbie quest armor when there are much lower level bandits in Gfay and Butcherblock? Unless there is a Luclin specific quest involving these, they are worth a couple gold each as loot. That's all.

That's actually incorrect as far as newbies not being able to hunt in paludal, unless you are saying that they cannot hunt bandits there.

On the shadeweaver's Thicket side of PC a lvl 6 or 7 could hunt happily there.
RE:RE:new drops in paludual

Have to agree with you on newbies hunting here. I take ALL my new chars here to lvl. Once you hit lvl 5 or 6, you can hunt in PC at the Shadeweavers Entrance. Reishi Sprouts and and baby Bugs are excellent for exp, getting a full blue or more per kill. After they start getting LB, just move a little deeper in and start on juvie Reishis, and Muck Diggers. Then go for the regular Reishi and Plergs. Soloing I can go thru about 3 lvls per hour up to lvl 13. At that point, it slows down a little for med and heal times, but no better exp for low lvls can be found. As a side note, don't bother trying to get a group in PC before lvl 17. Too many Morons in this zone think anyone lvl 17 or lower can't do any good here.

Greatest 14 to 23 zone
# Jan 09 2003 at 6:35 PM Rating: Excellent
A long time ago, on a planet far far away....There was a place called Norrath. Before there was "newbie armor"(which used to be an oxymoron) and 20 zones named Plane of Whatever and before rogues hid in caves, People had to actually deal with getting crappy XP. It used to be that you were bascally stuck in Orc Highway until you were level 18 and then you scrambled of to Lake of Ill Omen to begin what would become more corpse runs than XP. Then these wizards went to the moon and stuff and now there is this cave right next to a huge city(shadow haven) called Paludal Caverns. This zone takes you from level 14 to 23 in a matter of a day and had what used to be considered phat lewt. You never found anyone at level 14 that wasnt twinked wearing more than leather armor. But now you can just zip on up to 23, take a few steps over to Echo Caverns ad go to level 30 and then you can take this book thingy to rivervale(skipping the ling karana walk) and strolling into highpass, getting phat lewt there, going to velious, and next thing u know you are killing Innoruuk with your level 65 Planar Advancement and laughing as you do so. Great. But unlike the narrow-minded *cough "veterans" *cough Im not ******** about it, I THINK ITS FRIGGIN GREAT!
RE: Greatest 14 to 23 zone
# Mar 12 2003 at 8:16 PM Rating: Decent
I agree.

This zone rocks for lowbie leveling.
Recently taken my Druid from 19-26 in about 8hrs of steady slaying even with crowds and a lot of kill stealing arguments *sigh*, a monk from 12-19 in 3, and an ench from 13-19 in the same time.

For my druid I hit the camps with groups, for my other alt's I entered from the Var Shir city side and solo'd mushies and tunnelers. Loot is OK off of recondites depending on CHA with merchs.

/asks Which way did you say Innoruuk just went? :-)

I'm in total agreement this is one of the best zones in the game to quickly level your chars. Only draw back is that this zone is always crowded and getting in a group can take a while. But no worries usually enough peeps waiting to make a group and head over to netherbian lair and go hunt there for a bit and can usually take that group into paludal for lvling.

This is one of the best zoned for lvl16-23. It has five good spots for groups but you cant really solo. My fav spot is the 2nd camp because it only fits on group even if the loot seemed worse (maybe that was cause on of our groups was ninja-ing and didn't have aut split on) but the ex was good. The fiends are great xp and decent loot, but if you loot everything its ok and the free food is fine with me. the crabs are good for 16-17 because they are pansys and are out of the way. You should be moving out by 24 to either netherbian lair if you can find a grp of high keep IMO, although i cant say there were much peopl in the lair on bertoxx.

HAPPY HUNTING

Hiyas,

RE: What About ME?
# Feb 28 2004 at 8:23 AM Rating: Default
As per my previous post, lvl 5 or 6 and up CAN solo here. Pay no attention to the idiot that doesn't know how to play his class saying no one can solo in this place. As an Enchanter, just root and DoT with a nuke here and there. Although, you'd do way better charming than using the Root technique. I brought my chanter in at lvl 13, and had a blast. I was charming Plergs and letting them do all the work. With a DoT here and there and a Nuke to finish the fight. By the time Charm wears off, your pet will be low enough on mana to blast him once and get the exp from killing him also. Then just charm a new one and repeat.

IMO i think that you are a little low for a banit grp without your pet but you are an ech and i was a rng who had no luck. If you try to solo the fiends you'll probably die becuse you can't heal the crud of you. but you can heal the crud off your PET with a pet heal spell i think. So you definatley should use your pet and when you lvl to 117 get in the baniti camps. Thats my expierince on bertoxx and i loved it.

Reputations are earned - the good ones and the bad ones
# Oct 02 2002 at 8:44 AM Rating: Decent
I was here last night getting my Cleric to 26 when there was a tell 'paying for rez'. I responded and the person that sent the tell brought me his friends corpse to rez. I rez'd his friend, healed him fully and gave him some buffs that he had lost. When I sat down to mana up they both thanked me and then they both left. Not a good way for people to make friends of a Cleric and the really sad part is that I had fought with their guild in Unreast and I was really impressed with THOSE people. Not impressed with the one that sent me the tell and did not pay. I did send out a shout telling all that if they offer to pay for a rez they should follow through. I did not hear back from the person that sent me the 'paying for rez' tell. I did not name names last night in my shouts and I will not name names here but Clerics do have a good memory and do remember the good ones that always come through and do write down those that do not.

I have started keeping a pad of paper with me at all times, since an experience where we camped a named spawn for two hours only to have some other group show up and steal it when it DID spawn. It's like dealing with the phone company, you have to keep records. Doesn't EQ make you wonder if people are as rude in real life??
RE: Reputations are earned - the good ones and the bad ones
# Nov 30 2002 at 10:14 PM Rating: Decent
No, they're not as rude in RL. In RL you can get socked in the nose for being rude, online games (and the Internet as a whole) provide a haven for these punks to behave like jerks without fear of repercussions.

Shirok, if you know their guild you should report them to the leader. If it's a good guild, they'll care. In my guild, that kind of BS is grounds for deguilding. We have a saying, "Don't insult the Cleric".

Fun place, Brought my lv 20 rogue here 1.5 hours later I camped out as a lv 24. Sad thing about soloing a rogue is well whats backstab skill lol.

But yes bring your charater here level up, head out other good old school dungeons are nice after 24 25 when your done here. Paw and Solb both offer 13% xp bonuses. Helps if you have a healer friend or you provide your own. Mabye a decently twinked charater at lv 24 my rogue has 526ac 886 hps, buffed by my cleric friend 594ac 1800hps. Not godly but gets the job done. Now if I could only start to realize that, Im a rogue and start doing it from behind mabye I could get my bs skill up lol.

Safe hunting.

At level 20 with my Wood Elf Druid I was soloing here like a Ranger. I had found the Icepaw Claws on a vendor in Shadowhaven for 3pp, and I admit that helped. At level 20 I was meleƩ'ing the Sensate Reishi near the water pretty easily, or got a group for Recondites. Great place, have taken 3 characters through here. Got 2 levels a day for a solid 8 days total on Luclin, after school and homework of course.
Necros and Paludal

I've heard many people in the Caverns say that once a necromancer reaches 21 soloing the Caverns is easy enough. I have seen many an old group meber fly up in level after hitting 21. So it seems this is good advice. But lvl 20 has just about everything around conning blue with a few yellows, but that is only becaues the yellows r also lvl 20.

If you're a 21 Necro, come to PC and solo nice exp, and decent loot if u get it all and plus sometimes u get soem nice research words off the Recos.

I brought my necro here at level 12 and started killing beetles then at 16(when i had cure disease) I moved on to the phlarg fiends, then about 20 i went after the bandit camps. I soloed the entire time. Now at 24, I kill Yelloweyes, Maricella (named bandit), and the Reshicyben. This is the best exp I've seen anywhere. two thumbs up for a soloing necro. BTW use gather shadows and you can go anywhere to find a good camping spot.

as a 23 warrior i want to solo paludal caverns, but find the sites camped and the characters not receptive to the idea of someone asking permission to pull a single npc and departing. i don't group well and find myself more dead than alive. this slows the game and in some instances the other players become angry at the delays. is there a solution. I generally camp on the outskirts and wait for a player to zone with an npc in tow.
RE: soloing paludal caverns

well as a warrior i would give up the idea of soloing as a warrior past 20. not to bash on the effectiveness of warriors but we just don't do well on our own. however to deal with your group problem, which as a warrior is a huge problem, i would just shout for a partner and see if any druids shamans or clerics that are lower lvl and having trouble finding groups are willin to partner with you. with that combo you should be able to take one a few blues at a time without casualty, providing the healer knows how to manage their aggro and your taunt skills are up.

but not to flame on yeah but if you don't like to group warrior is not the class to be, past lvl 20 my warrior has been totaly dependent on groups for any decent rate of xp, i just recently dinged 30 and i was having trouble gettin a group in Marus Seru so decided ***** it and tried to solo, tooke me about and hour to gain 1 blue, comparitively slow to when i was in a group earlear that day and gaining a blue in about 20-30 minutes.

but at any rate good luck and see about just picking up on lone healers that are lookin for groups as partners.

Some how i was able to solo my Rogue here from level 16 to 25 really quicky, just as long as you can kill the bandits with onley 50% hp (+ hp items help a lot, or you can ask you local cleric or druid for an hp buff and lots of bandaids)got my bind wound skill up to 120 at 25. Just kill the spawns that are by themselves near the lake you will be fine (if they take less than 50% hp of course) Im sure this will work for any semi twinked mele, you just have to see what you can get away with, test which mobs onley pull 1 at a time, and what conns you can solo. Im taking my enchanter there next see how a caster can solo here... well good luck every, one you can do it!
