Located on the dark side of the moon, Hollowshade Moor is in a constant state of darkness and is the site of an ongoing struggle between owlbears, sonic wolves, and grimlings. Each trying to retain control over the land. It is also the site of one of Luclin's best views of Norrath.

Of all the times my vah shir beastlord has been in Hollowshade trying to do quests, somebody attacks someone else and everyone is forced to wait for the war to end to reset the zone. So far, I am yet to see anyone actually purposefully try to create the war. Most of the time somebody complains to the GMs and they reset the zone. This war sucks and needs to be triggered by players instead of being on auto. Everytime this war goes off and something gets taken over, NO Vah Shir quests involving the Moor can be done.

an ammendment to my post. the grimling version of prince skritat is named wiknak gringlom.
the only thing ive gotten off her is a mask tht is equipable by no class. unless theres a realy good rare drop i say this one isnt worth it.
also finaly saw the owbear version of the grim chief. hes immune to nothing but is incredibly magic resistant and his only known loot is an owbear claw earring and thats rare.

Sonic Defenders
# May 20 2002 at 1:33 PM Rating: Default
In front of the sonic wolf cave 3 defenders spawn. They are about level 30 hits for 69 (well thats the highest I saw) and they SUMMON! Heh, it cought me by surprise and my 52 mage gated to safety with only 100 HP left! Like all wolves they are very resistant to both fire and magic. Malise first, then nuke!

If you are going to camp Curfang I suggest doing it at level 32-33. All sonic wolves will stille be dark blue then...
the whole war thing sumed up
# May 19 2002 at 3:57 PM Rating: Excellent
O.k hope this helps for all that want to run the war cycle.Done it several times.
Ok when war is first started there are 3 camps with 3 races, the grimlings in there little city to the east, the wolfs in the caves to the north, and owlbear caves that are in the west.(Facing out from Shar Vahl). This might not allways be the case when ya enter zone, other people might be running the war cycle.
Now every 10-30 mins (haven't timed this) there will be a zone message to the effect that "the grimlings nash there teeth and look toward the east" or the "owlbears sharpen there claws and look to the west". This means that within a couple mins a raiding party of that race will be attacking 1 of the 3 camps (direction telling you which one). What you need to do is high tale it to that camp and take out the defenders that are spawned there to let the raiding party take over the camp.(Raiding party will allways lose without the players help taking out the defenders). Take out as many defenders as you can and aviod aggro from the raiding party. Useally taking out 2-3 defenders will allow the raiding party to win, also handle wandering mobs off the defending party because they will jump in and kill the raiders.
Once the raiding party takes out all defenders they will move into that camp. (this is where ya have to avoid aggroing the raiding party or they wont move in) and a system message to the effect of "the grimlins shout and hollor for there victory" will appear. Once that one camp is takin lets say the grmilings taking over the wolf cave move to the owlbear cave and await the message that the grimlings will attack that cave and repeat process of killing defenders. Once 1 of the 3 races has all 3 camps then the main Boss (prince) will random spawn.
Killing the prince will reset the whole zone back to the origanal 3 camps which each race spawning again and the whole process can be repeated to spawn whatever race you want up. Each race has certain named that pop in each of the 3 camps, those can be found in the beastery page.
Be careful though as this happened to my group the other day: After 2 hours getting the grmlings to take all the camps and camping the named in the owlbear cave to get his haste belt someone came along and killed the prince reseting the whole zone. This after repeated shouts and OOC to plz not kill the prince and reset the whole zone(prince pops random spots so may not be able to camp the different spawns and keep people away from prince). Needless to say we were alittle miffed that 2 hours went down the drain due to some idiot who couldnt listen. This is a great little zone to farm in our tweak your alts out(caster stuff alittle better). I park my alt in the zone and if a no drop comes along use him to loot it.
My suggestion is to do this on off peak hours where the zone is empty and u have no worries about having zone reset on you. Also having 3-4 other guildies there to camp the other spawn points is great since alot of stuff is lore and you can switch back and forth between the camps never losing them.
Hope this gives ya an idea how it works, happy hunting all good luck

Actually there are some of the beetles and some of the hoppers that do aggro anyone no matter what lvl... they are the ones that are ph for the named Gorehorn and Dirtchomp.

Yes you can walk up and kiss the others if green but there are some that will not like your affection at all.

So is not BS in reality. Go run around and kiss a few more... you will have different reactions from a few.

Last night on track there was a named owlbear, Prince Skriet. I tracked him, cast snare--he moved out of range, ran closer, recast--fizzled, went to recast and someone else jumped in and hit it with a spell. He ended up killing the Prince so I didn't get to see what it dropped. About 10 minutes later, the whole zone, that used to be Owlbear, turned to Grimling. I had never seen the Prince before, so am wondering if killing him triggers changing the zone. Someday I'll get this whole zone war figured out.

I found a very nasty change here upon returning the other day. Upon entering the zone from Shar Vahl the first thing I noticed was the two guards are no longer at the zone area. I went in and right to go get 22 and was going to work on my quest for the fangs I needed. Well I had to leave after I had gotten a blue and half into 22 and thought I would just camp out in the outpost for my work the next day. WOW was I surprised to find Nasty RED Grimlins own the outpost now. I did not make the zone and lost my lvl. I don't see these creatures listed here so today I will see if I can't get some names but these guys are very nasty as most of the Grimlins are.
So be warned the outpost is no longer in the loving hands of the Shar Vahl.

This was due to the Grimlings winning this bout of the war. The outpost returns to normal when the war ends.

Indifferent green con Vah Shir at level 36. Haven't found out anything about Journeyman's cloak.

Ahom Guzhin is the NPC that continues your "class" specific quest of Vah Shir. You have to complete all quests up to the completion of the Sonic Wolf Bane Weapon and receive your Journeyman's Cloak before Ahom can assist you with your next "task" and upgrade your cloak :)

Hope that helps explain more about Ahom Guzhin.

During the wars, with the Grimling occupying the Owlbear caves, this guy popped in Skriet'Cha's spawn point. Blue to me at 42 and seemed to have about 1800hps when counting up the damage I did to him. Most he hit me for was 73 dmg and he dropped a No Drop arm item called the Grimling Armband of Servitude. Is ac2, and adds 2 to str, dex, agi, wis, int, hps, mana and magic resist, and a 2% Throwing skill modifier. Hoping to kill him again and see what else he drops.

The owlbear cave defenders and sonic wolf cave defenders were pretty easy to find; they both spawn in front of the cave. But I was wondering if anyone is able to tell me where the Grimling Defenders spawn? Is it near their main south camp (where the chieftan is) or along the mainland shore where the grimling islands are?

Thanks in advance.

Never mind; managed to be in the right spot when they spawned. For future reference to help anyone else: The 4 Grimling Defenders spawn directly in front of the chieftans hut. And be careful, as the 2 bodyguards of the cheiftan will join in if they have not been killed earlier.

Also a warning to any high level characters that try and take down the grimling Prince: he has absolutely insane magic resist. I am way above his level, but he was resisting all of my nukes.
Zone War

Ummm . . . well the idea of a war like this is cool I have one major problem with how it works. I was shopping at the Vah Shir outpost when the Grimlings won. Now it would be cool (even if I died) if the grimlings stormed the guards and killed everyone, little danger and a plot that can be interacted with. However, when the Grimlings "won" they won because all the Vah Shir suddenly became Grimling body guards quickly killing my 23 bst before I could zone. This really needs to be fixed.

Wjat triggers the war cycle?
# Apr 12 2002 at 2:26 AM Rating: Decent
Edited: Hehe - title was supposed to be "What", not "Wjat". ;-)

I have helped the different races take over other camps several times now.
I have also finished the war by killing the final "boss" at Vah Shir outpost 4 times (3 times with group of 2, one time with group of 4):
- 2 times Gnarlik (the Sonic Wolf boss) and
- 2 times Prince Garzemort (the grimling boss)

And as said this ends the war-cycle and the sone repopps to normal.

But then (at least on Rallos Zek) - after some time the first attack of a new cycle is broadcasted in sone.

There seems to be no user-driven interaction with the Vah Shir at Grimling Forest entrance to trigger this.
And I doubt killing the Owlbear prince (Skrietat) will trigger this, cause in my opinion he is only the named spawn on a particular spawn area when sone is in normal modus.

But there is a single wandering Sonic Wolf walking from Sonic caves to the walls of Shar Vahl. Have anyone noticed if he is present when the sone is in some "transit mode" (one race have more than one camp)?
In case he is - is he still a sonic wolf - or does he convert to the race currently occupying the Sonic caves?
Since he is so unique, I think he may be related to the triggering of the war?
At least he must serve some purpose/mission since he is not like the other wolfs staying around their camp/spawn area.

I visited tonight (April 11th) to try and fight the owlbears.... Alas, they have been wiped out by sonic wolves. So had the grimling camp! The entire zone is covered in sonic wolves. I think i saw some called warwolves, sonic renders, sonic pups, sonic wolflings, sonic trackers... you get the idea. Quite the change since i was last here only a week ago. Very social and aggressive...

Named ones - compiled
# Apr 11 2002 at 3:31 PM Rating: Excellent
I have made a compilation on all the named ones I have meet/killed so far in Hollowshade Moore Zone and the War-"quest". This is based on how it is at the Rallos Zek server right now. Those marked "Unknown" I have not encountered yet.

- 3 Racial spawn areas: Grimlings, Sonic Wolfs and Owlbears
- 4 Modes of the zone: Normal-mode, Grimling-mode, Sonic Wolf-mode and Owlbear-mode. 3 last "modes" are dependant of what race winning a particular battle.

I dont know if table below is understandable but asterix represent column separators):

Spawn \ mode * Normal mode * Grimling mode * Sonic Wolf mode * Owlbear mode

Owlbear cave left room * Scrietat’Chu * Gleeknot Gnitrat * Fireclaw Wolfkin * "NORMAL"
Owlbear cave "innermost" room * Scrietat’Cha * Gniktar Grinwit * Dreadmaw Wolfkin * "NORMAL"
Owlbear outside * Prince Scriatat * Wiknak Grimglom * Warpaw Dankpelt * "NORMAL"
Sonic wolf cave * Ghowlik * Grurn No Eyes * "NORMAL" * Unknown
Sonic wolf hillside * Curfang * Gamtoine Cursmakk * "NORMAL" * Unknown
Grimling village * Grimling Chieftain * "NORMAL" * Scarflank * Owlbear screechmaw
Vah Shir Outpost * Vah Shir guards and merchants * Prince Garzemort * Gnarlik * Unknown

Many very nice drops in this zone. Many No drops. (And No drop are very useful on our server.)
2 dropped items are haste-items.

have hunted curfang alot. once got 5 kills in 4 hr period, mostly one kill and long wait for him. he is easier than some of the wandering wolves, but harder than others. He drops "a slightly chewed ring" most often, and his heart less. also drops "Curfang's Torment" prim sec 11/32 piercer. he is probably the easiest named mob in the zone. (not sure havent done them all due to low lvl chars. hope this information is good, easy to find him at wolf beach, second bend left of first bridge if coming from fort. Curfang's Torment is 12/31 not 11/32, and it looks SWEET equipped, hehe. Green gem inlaid hilt with a fat blade, and the blade and hilt all have patterns on it. Looks like a halfling's short sword, much less like a dagger.

The newbie I gave this too was a very happy little halfling rogue, let me tell you =)

Oh and Curfang's heart is one sweet range item baby. Sure beats my PoS rogue only ranged from plane of hate. It's sad to see relative EQ newbies loot something like this and say, "Hmm, looks ok, guess I will keep it," when this, by standards gone by, is UBAH.

But seriously, wth are these two loots dropping off a mob like curfang for? And then they nerf the right-click FD on a necro only item from the vamps in Tenebrous? LOL, so messed up man. If ya gonna nerf, ya might wana look at the lvl 20ish, 20 second kill mob over here droppin this crazy ranged item. /em ponder

LOL, HOLLOWSHADE IS A FREEBIE ZONE. Just one example of how Luclin is making old world loots mostly obsolete. Amazing the people I see hanging around KC who have luclin and never go. Gawd you are missing out peeps, get with it =P
Quit camping the drolvarg mantle and get yer asses out here.
