Located on the dark side of the moon, Hollowshade Moor is in a constant state of darkness and is the site of an ongoing struggle between owlbears, sonic wolves, and grimlings; each trying to retain control over the land. It is also the site of one of Luclin's best views of Norrath.

Working this zone as a Druid!

Here are some very effective methods I use (as a DRUID) to work this zone.

1) Port to Grimling
2) Run to Hallowshade (takes 3 seconds to run)
3) Levitate yourself and run along the LEFT wall till you reach the SOUTH CAMP
4) Bind yourself in a safe spot near the SOUTH CAMP
(There are lots of safe areas near this camp. Along the zone-wall works)

Chances are the GRIMLINGS will be the first camp up. If so...here is how I deal with them:

a) Stay high UP on the south zone-wall. You should be looking down at the spawns where the GRIMLING CHIEFTAN is. There are FOUR other mobs surrounding the CHIEFTAN that you should kill first!

b) Using SNARE - Pull the first GRIMLING BODYGUARD on the left corner of the camp. ROOT him and DOT him to death.

c) If you're EAST a tad bit...you SHOULD be able to see the first few letters in the name of 1 of the mobs INSIDE THE HUT near the CHIEFTAN. CLICK ON THE WALL OF THE HUT TILL YOU TARGET THE MOB INSIDE. (This is the 1st of the healers that must die) After you target it by clicking the wall of the hut....snare - root - kill it! Mobs INSIDE the hut will walk right through the walls once they are pulled. JUST like they walk through the walls of the NORTH camp which i'll get to later in this post...)

d) Move to the RIGHT side of the hut (while staying high on the SOUTH zone-wall) and pull the last GRIMLING BODYGUARD that is outside the hut. Kill it. (of couse)

e) *Important* Now switch to your 2nd camera angle. Tweak this camera to be RAISED as HIGH AS IT CAN GO. Then...by using mouse-look...you will be able to scan the area but your view is now from a MUCH HIGHER perspective!

f) While in this new camera view....carefully flank the CHIEFTAN's hut on the RIGHT SIDE....be sure not to get to close. The goal is to sneak in and face the FRONT of the hut. While facing the front of the hut your raised camera view will allow you to target the LAST of the healers located directly behind the CHIEFTAN! Target this mob and then return to the south zone-wall!

g) Now that you're back up on the zone-wall...snare as you did before to pull - root - then kill it quickly. (If you take too long the others will respawn)

Now you've cleared the camp and are ready for the CHIEFTAN! Target the CHIEFTAN while high up on the SOUTH zone-wall once again. Start your attack with your STRONGEST DOT FIRST. This is because your strongest DOT will generally have the LONGEST cast-time. (ie: epic) The point of this is simple! THE CHIEFTAN WILL SUMMON YOU IMMEDIATLY! Once he summons you.....lay into him with your strongest DD spells. The camp around you should still be CLEAR so you will not get teamed up on....and the CHIEFTAN will NOT be recieving HEALS!

**GRIMLING CAMP NOW CLEAR**

Now the Owlbears should move in....At this point you should be resting back on the SOUTH zone-wall. By the time the Owlbears arrive you will probably be at FULL health and mana. Go ahead and pull the Owlbear Screechmaw directly. (snare - root - kill)

Now load the spell: LESSER SUCCOR
Use LESSER SUCCOR to teleport right at the NORTH CAMP by Shar Vhal. (Boy...that was easy aye?)

Now, using your 2nd camera angle as before (the HIGH one) approach the walls of the camp. You should have a CLEAR VIEW inside the camp without having to get in danger. If Skriat' Chakku is up....Pull him with your strongest DOT once again. (He is IMMUNE to fear, snare, root!) Use the safe, wide-open area just outside the NORTH camp to KITE Skriat' Chakku till it's dead.

If Skriat' Chakku is NOT up or you have just finished killing him; Cast GATE to return to the SOUTH CAMP area instantly.

(If Skriat' Chakku was NOT up...kill a few more Owlbears including the Owlbear Screechmaw in the area)

In time....the Sonic Wolves will take over! Use the same tactic of LESSER SUCCOR and GATE to traverse between these two KEY POINTS in the zone. It gives you full control over the mob cycles...and thus....the drops you get!

Something I did that i'll suggest is......I took a few moments AHEAD OF TIME and camped one of my lower level ALTS at the NORTH CAMP. This was in case one of the no-drop items became available to loot...when it would have been no use for my MAIN character. (ie: Parked my MONK to get the HASTE item)

If one faction controls all the camps in the zone, the event can be reset by killing the controlling race's "boss" (Prince Garzemort (grimling), Gnarlik (sonicwolf), or Skriat' Chakku (owlbear)) who spawns in the northwest camp by Shar Vahl.

There are two named owlbears in the owlbear caves: Skrieta'Cha pops at 3027, 2002. Skrieta'Chu pops at 3537, 1983. Their placeholders are owlbear fleshrenders, and they are on a 12 minute cycle. The sonic wolf named is Ghowik, in the caves at 450, -2975. Its placeholder is a sonic packleader and they are also on a 12 minute spawn cycle. Kill named to start a "war".

Acrylia drops semi-frequently off the Grimlings when they control the east cave. The Grimlings that spawn there are slightly tougher then those on the south islands, but if you are looking for Acrylia in this zone then this is your spot.

There is a quest called Hollowshade Moor War. If they aren't at the camp they are supposed to be, try the Sonic Wolf camp or the Grimling camps. I hear sometimes these groups 'take over' another camp. Hope it helps!

What you observed was the effects of the war. On entering the zone you may find that one of the factions has been totally wiped out. The first successful attack will eliminate one of the factions from the war, that is until the war ends or the zone resets. There are three states of the war:
1. All three factions alive and in their homes
2. One faction eliminated and their camp taken over by one of the remaining factions
3. Two factions eliminated, resulting in the zone being taken over by the last faction. The Vah Sir outpost will also be taken over by this remaining faction. Killing the named at the outpost will end the war.

Unless you're on Al'Kabor, in which case the Vah Shir outpost never gets taken over and the zone is occupied by the winning faction until the GM shows up to reset it. And then, 12 hours later or less, some faction will have taken over the zone again, causing all kitties to gripe and moan because they can't get their quest items easily.

(Yeah, I'm feeling bitter today. Though if I get the old-style garrison officer's cloak thing, I will probably be happier.)

Sonic Wolf Bane Spawn Lowdown
# Mar 12 2004 at 1:02 PM Rating: Excellent
21 posts
For the past month I have been hunting the Moor to complete the Sonic Wolf Bane quest for my Beastlord, using alts for the other crafted components. I have come to know the areas of the sonic wolves and the owlbears quite well. here is what I have learned, and I hope someone will find it usefull:

Owlbears - The components that drop from the owlbears will only drop off Owlbear Cubs, Owlbear Grapplers and Owlbear Razorbeaks. Also, they will only drop off those mobs that spawn outside of the caves, not from the ones within. There are two, and ONLY two, spawn points outside the caves that I have found and they operate on approximately a 5 minute timer. One spawn point, which has for me only spawned Cubs, is on/around the small hill that over looks the Vah Shir outpost. The other is a random point in the valley outside the Owlbear cave entrance. Sometimes the spawn is up in the grey area on the north side and sometimes it's on the greensward on the southern end. These are the only two that I have found in the month that I have been hunting here. Owlbear Guts and Fatty Owlbear Meat look like a common drop, as I've seen either one on almost every single kill, regardless of mob type. Owlbear Tendons I'd rank at uncommon to rare, but they are not as rare as Small Owlbear Claws, which are quite rare. I was only farming the bears to get my Beastlord two of the small claws and that took me a month of about 3 hours each night. Maybe I'm really unlucky, but that' your call.

Sonic Wolves - Sonic Wolves are a pain in the neck, and I will not be sad to see them for the last time. Thankfully at 46 the ones I am hunting are all green and fall quite easily to my strength. The spawns that drop components are Sonic Wolflings, Sonic Pups and Sonic Wolves. NOTE: There are two diffrent versions of Sonic Wolves. There are those that spawn INSIDE the cave, and those that spawn OUTSIDE the cave. They look the same and have the same name, but do not have the same loot table. As with the Owlbears, only the ones that spawn OUTSIDE the caves will ever have a chance of dropping the components for the quest. The only way you can tell if the Sonic Wolf that you are fighting is one that spawned outside the cave is to look at the location you found it in. The wolves that spawn in the caves are all called "Sonic Wolf" and patrol the outside of the cave only for a short distance. If the wolf you are stalking is headed back in the direction of the cave, then you are better off not wasting your time. The Pups, Wolflings and Wolves that drop the components all spawn on and around the island between the two bridges. There are approximately 3 spawn points on the island itself, while a random one puts one of the mobs somewhere around the shores surrounding the north end of the island (I've encountered spawns on both the East and West sides of the island's tip) and another random spawn puts one on the Eastern river near the south end of the island where it empties into the bigger body of water. That spawn can wander onto the Eastern side of the river I have seen.

Now, about the island itself and the three spawn points. One, which spawns Wolfings and Pups, is in the small cluster of trees and stumps in the Northwestern area of the island. It can wander up the hill towards the center sometimes, but that's the general area. Second spawn in next to the road in the central area of the island, on the Eastern facing slope. This is also a spawn point for a named(Curfang I belive, but don't quote me on that) that only spawns if the war has not started yet. This will only happen right after a server/zone reset or right after someone completes the war. Third spawn point is on the southern end of the island, in the flat area of green before the land slopes down to the water. The wolf spawns are harders for me to time since there are more of them than there are of the Owlbears, but I think the Sonic Wolves are on a longer timer. They tend to wander more than the Owlbears, which makes them even more of a pain to track down. The Wolves have a lot more drops than the Owlbears, which makes the hunt last longer as they may drop something that you don't need anymore. I'm not done farming the Wolves yet, so as this next month-long hunting trip goes on I will try to post additional infromation that I happen to gather. Until then, good luck!

P.S. After this is all over, I will be able to produce all of the Sonic Wolf Bane components, so if you are on the Tunare server and looking for one or more of them, give Kikyn a /tell and I'll see what I can do. :)

For the past week or so I've been running the war in various parts on Tunare. Found out a little something about the war by accident. If you attack the defenders when the attackers are nearby, ALL OF THEM WILL TURN ON YOU. I had the defenders and the attackers stop fighting each other, and pile onto me.

Since the defenders summon, this can be, and for me was, deadly.

The only way I would think that this would happen is that you targeted a defender and hit him with an AOE spell.... The attackers are indifferent MOBs; they aren't on your side and aren't immune to your AOE, they don't know that you are trying to help them. If you hit one, he attacks along with buddies who will now assist. Once the targeted defender MOB is hit, and any attacker MOB is hit by an AOE blast, all defenders and attackers will be on you. If you are high enough level, maybe only those defenders and attackers hit by AOE turn on you while those not hit continue against each other,
but just maybe.

Most of the attackers are non-KOS to you, unless you're in wolf form or something. It is, of course, best to kill the defenders before the attackers get there, but I've fought alongside the attackers and haven't had any trouble with them turning on me.
Some advice

Lil advice for high lvls looking to camp the war, Choose a side ya want to win then stick with em, this war can be done in like 30 mins if your lucky. When the side ya want to win attacks, go the spot they're attacking and kill the defenders, they summon and stuff so you better be prepared to fight til the end, if ya can get 2 defenders down by the time the attackers come then they can take the last one down, after a bit of work, the side you want to win will attack the remaining camp, again redo the strategy previously noted, all camps should be taken adn the lvl 40 mob will spawn in the kitty outpost. Now you can do it the hard way, attacking the camp head on from the front, or you can simple target teh lvl 40 mob then go around back of the camp and cast a spell or 2, depending on the mob your gonna wanna cast a Dot if ya can or a DD. Pull the mob over to the SV entrance and cast/hack away. Very ez quest if ya know how to do it, *tho loot kinda sucks to high lvls, ya can just have an alt camped at the SV entrance way and log him/her in to loot the dead mob for some decent loot*

Once one side wins, kill the named in the "outpost" just out of Shar Vahl. This resets the zone also.

Unfortunately, it is only a temporary respite. They will start attacking each other shortly after the zone is reset. It is a never ending process.

Hey, I linked this a long time ago, but I guess it got eaten by time. So I thought I'd re-post it. This site has been something I've been working on since about 6 months after Luclin came out give or take. I ran out of room and can't edit it in the slightest anymore. If you need any info not listed on the site, go ahead and e-mail me or shoot me a tell in game. But it will never be up-dated again, cause quite frankly it won't let me since it's just a crappy freebie site.

Check it out...(and for the record I have seen and screenied every mob now, as well as have all the lewt, but oh well hehe)

Just entered the zone tonight for the first time since the revamp. I've spent several hours there and only seen one, count them one, owlbear cub that is on at least a 10 minute respawn timer in the entire zone when all factions are up. This effectively breaks ALL low-level Vah Shir quests leading to the Sonic Wolf Bane weapons and the cloak upgrades. While the war itself has been fixed, most other quests associated with this zone are now effectively broken. Excuse me for sounding a bit bitter, but I've have spent a lot of time getting to the point where I *might* be able to get my Wolf Bane to find it now almost impossible.

Skriat'Chakku is the owlbear that pops at the back of the fort after the owlbears control the zone... I just killed her not five minutes ago, but she didn't drop the FT1 eye I was hoping for, got the polished owlbear beak and an owlbear feathered cap, which I gave to my Magician camped nearby, since noone else wanted them.

They just fixed the war event. The owlbears, wolves or grimling can take the Vah Shir fort after defeating the other two factions. This Spawns a named mob in the Vah Shir fort. Killing the Named in the Vah shir fort will return the zone to the its orginal state. The drops seem geared for level thrity to level fourty characters.

Was bored, as running though the zone, noticed that the Vah Shir outpost was taken over by the sonic wolves. Being bored at the time, decided to kill the name, pulled him though the camp and killed him. Name was Gnalick, apprently not listed. Too bad didn't take screenshot. Drop a mask, forgot stats will post later :)

I was hunting in HM today and was levelling up on 'a sonic hunter' and 'a sonic ravager'. The hunters ranged from light blue to dark blue to me at 25 and the ravagers ranged from dark blue to yellow. I think there may have been one or two other mobs I saw on track that were not listed here, either.

Here is info about this zone.

1) on repop or on completion of the war there are three tribes doing battle. Wolves will attack north and south. Grimlings will attack north and east. Owlbears will attack east and south.

Owlbear camp is the cave north of zonein from shar vhal. Defenders will spawn at the entrance to the cave when another camp tries to attack and take over the camp.

Sonic wolves spawn north of the southern islands in a cave on the eastern wall of the zone. I would approximate that the cave is in the center of the wall on the east side. Again the defenders for attacks spawn at the outside of the cave.

Grimlings spawn on the islands in the southeast part of the zone. Almost directly southeast from shar and directly south from grimling forest. Defenders spawn on the hill next to the chieftain hut, directly in front of it when they are being attacked.

To start a war process you need to kill the defenders of a tribe being attacked so that the attackers can get by and claim the camp. There are various reasons to let this happen.

2) FARMING.

Only the Southern island drops those valuable smithing skillup items like howling and shrieking substances. You need to kill the grimling defenders when either the owlbears or sonic wolves attack to get them to take over the southern islands and start farming.

You WILL NOT get any shrieking or wailing substances at any decent rate trying to kill owlbears or sonic wolves at their native locations. They MUST be spawning on the southern shores to drop smithing items.

3) Dont be a tard.

If you start a war to farm; farm for a couple hours or however long you can stand and finish the damn war so the zone doesn't get bugged.

You must let any one tribe take all three camps and kill the named spawn where the vah'shir usually are to reset the zone.

4) Don't get yourself screwed.

If you come across this zone where one tribe has already taken the southern shores, or any other spot for that matter... You may need to finish the war and reset it so that the zone doesn't break down.

Say you come into the zone to start farming southern islands. You notice that there is only 1 attack message in 2 hours and its from the southern camp. Right about there you should know that it is time to finish the war and start it over; even though it may take an hour before you get the zone back and shore set up again.

I can guarantee you that if you leave the zone with 1 attack message long enough, you will soon have no attack message and have to petition and wait hours on end for a gm to reset the zone for you.

Why this is important -
You are either in this zone for newbie haste items or smithing no drop components for that precious 188+ smithing. You break the zone and you have no alternative but to wait on a gm should you decide you need no more of a particular item you were after.

Smithing - Do the Shar Vhal anvil and humming hammer quest to get prepped for this. www eqtraders com has a nice write up of this quest.
Collect TONS of shrieking substances and wailing substances (both no drop). Then farm some swirling shadows from the shadow island in twilight sea (no rent) and do your skill ups.

When you do this, you will notice that on the southern shores in hollowshade moor you can pull down about 40 substances an hour if you are a fast killer (any 61+ pet class comes to mind)

When you redo the war (hour lag time for attack messages) you give yourself a good 24 hours or so before the zone breaks itself waiting on you to finish the war.

5) How the hell do I know if the zone is going to break soon? or how do I know if it is broken?

Its simple really. Typically you get this:
blah attacks blah from the blah. You will get "blah from the moor" message if you need to reset the zone. If you get "blah from the blah" (east, north, south) yer fine... keep farming.

Brand new reset gives 3 messages an hour... One from each camp, with random times about 55 mins + or - 5 mins I believe.

Soon after you help a camp, they might retaliate. If they successfully retaliate I have no clue what happens, sorry. Basically you dont want this to happen. Once you have someone take a camp, try to finish the war before you log.

6) will a camp ever kill another camp without help? The answer is NO. They will fail, always... unless the defenders are debuffed via slow etc before the the attackers walk up.

Once the defenders are dead, however, the attackers need not kill any other mobs... they win soon as they get past the defenders without dying. Mobs will assist the defenders, but they will not agro the attackers outright. So if you want a camp to win, just kill the defenders and yer good.

------------------------------

There you have it... the zone's big mystery... you let one camp take another and farm for items or smithing junk.

Allakhazams has a list of items resulting from this war if you wish to do the war for no drop stuff. (farmers bane i call it) For example you can get various 10-17% haste items rarely from the named mobs if you let certain tribes overtake other ones. This is kinda pointless tho since you can pretty much farm flowing black silk sashes if you are high enough to manipulate the war at a reasonable pace.

I'm afraid they have changed some aspect of the war.... a camp CAN be defeated with no help at all. Last night i need some smithing supplies so i killed the Grimling Chieftan, and almost immeaditly, the owlbears attacked, i killed several Defenders, and let the owlbears finish off the last one, turning the Moor over to the owlbears... i was happily farming for about 2 hours when the sonic wolves attacked, i ignored it and kept killing, much to my surprise in the middle of a big pull, the Owlbears were Replaced by Sonic Wolves.
So, it seems that once started, the war will progress on its own now... it was time for bed, so i left it at that, i'll post more tomorrow is it is reset to grimlings in the morning.

From my experience, the war can be either triggered or random. Most of the time, however, it is triggered by higher-level players clearing out the caves repeatedly (I'm not sure why, but it's a pain trying to do quests that need drops from here...). For an example, one time a friend and I went out to the moor to hunt for quest drops about ten minutes after it had been reset. We were the only players in the zone at the time; and both of us needed at least one drop from each of the three races. A mere fifteen minutes into our hunting, we were near the sonic wolf caves farming sonic wolf tendons, when a high-level druid (conned red to my level 48 friend) ran up, killed the two wolves on either side of the cave entrance, and just waited. Of course, soon enough the owlbears show up, and despite our efforts the cave was overrun, starting the war again. As I've seen 99% of the time, there wasn't a named bear in the cave, so we had to re-petition a request to reset the zone a mere half-hour after it had been reset.

In short, if there is even one person in the zone hunting for quest items, please be considerate and do NOT attack the caves, as this will likely bug the zone.

You went during part of the war when it appears the owlbears had taken over. Eventually with either a kill of a particular NPC or server reset you get back the normal owlbears and wolves in the caves and grimlings on the isles.

It has been a little buggy though. Either that or there is a quest to reset it and no one has finished it yet.

Not getting any zone messages this week like the ones announcing an attack.

With the zone in its normal state I was camping the named in both caves. Killed Ghowlik and ran off some adds. Then I was killing owlbear placeholders when I was suddenly summoned by a sonic defender! Cool I thought had never beed summoned except by Vox. Wrong! as there were 3 defenders I was getting summoned quite frequently and a big train of wolves was chasing me. I can kill 3 or 4 wolves but not 10.

Lesson : if you leave aggro near where defenders spawn they will pick it up even if they spawn after and summon you. Don't know if this applies to owlbear or grimling defenders.

about 35 level spawns in owl caves on the right hand wing. Frequent spawn compared to others at least 1 out of 3 times his spot popped him.

So far 3 armbands and a decent piercer which procked engulfing darkness but rogue only and all his stuff so far is no drop

I think Wiknak is the wandering spawn that replaces Prince Skriatat when grimlings take the Owlbear caves, which is a regular occurance on Bristlebane of course I was a bit miffed cause i need a perfect owlbear pelts for ralic packs. but than I noticed that sometime the grimlings in HS were droping Acrylica, very nice.

It has now been 3 weeks since the last war started and in that time the Grimlings have taken over the Owlbear Cave while the Wolves have had the rest of the zone. No more movement in the war and no resetting by GMs or Verant. Hopefully someday they will realize that someone does not know how to do their job and fix this or simply turn off the war portion until they do.

This has been bugged my many people on Saryn. Hollowshade will go emtpy of people for days and the wolves will take over (always the wolves) and after 4 days the named wolf never spawned. The GMs reset the zone and 2 hours later the wolves took it over again. This war is a total pain in the butt as it completely prevents any Vah Shir from doing their cultural quests in the Moor. It needs to be shut off until it can be fixed.

For all you that think you know so so much about this War need to leave some accurate statements and not just hear-say.
On XEV I have done this War (solo & with Friends) over 40 Times now...
Why so many times you may ask... well there are alot of different drops and I want one of each from this zone ..just to say I have been there and done that..

Also for the Medding's post... the War can be broke if it is not done right.
What I mean by this is... Owlbears take all camps and no Prince owlbear it is a bug.... same with the wolves... So Grims take all camps and then Prince Spawns and is killed then the Zone will reset.
So is someone helps the Wolves or Owls win then the War is broke and at that point needs a reset from GM...
BTW it is not triggered or can be helped to Announce War cry faster it is all Auto and at times it can be done in 1 hr and other times it takes longer..

Just some of what I know from Experience..

Grimlings took over bear and wolf camps a week ago and prince never spawned. So Tigarle, it is not just the grimlings who are supposed to win, or the wolfs or bears that are bugged. Took me 3 days petitioning before they would reset the zone.
