This is a stretch of frozen land which covers the northeastern part of Velious. In the east, a large ice bridge connects to the islands of Iceclad Ocean while in the northwest, a break in the mountains leads to the Great Divide. Kael Drakkel, the city of giants, sits in the southwest while a dragonhead portal to Sleeper's Tomb sits in the south.

Many factions have taken up residence here. There is a frost giant fort and a few Coldain outposts. As well, the Ry`Gorr orc clan is well-established here with a large fort (which also houses the entrance to the Crystal Caverns) and a few outlying camps. These are in addition to the area's wildlife: From the benign rhinos, mammoths, and snow bunnies to the highly aggressive griffins, manticores, and cougars; you'd best watch over your shoulder while hunting here.

Ok i was on a run to WL to meet up with some guildies over there. I zone into EW and find the Chief standing there at the zone line on the bridge. I just figured this was another Orc and began to kill him. It wasn't until I began to loot him that I realized it was the chief. At this point I put on see invis and found 5 other players sitting there. When I began to apoligize for killing there mob they began to thank me. After do a /who on them I found most of them were about level 30. After I sat there and medded to FM I headed on the WL. At no time did I see or hear anyone shout about any avengers. I had forgot all about them til I just checked out the site here. Yes he did drop the BP and now my little rogue looks kick *****

Just wanted to know if anyone has seen this animal? and what does he drop?

Tain Hammerfrost is the name of the NPC he is for a quest that is currently unlisted. My friend and I were wondering what quest he was for but discovered that if you even speak to him about "helping" 4 level 45+ giants come running out of nowhere at you and Tain plays dead. We were unprepared for this sudden and viscous assault and died due to this. However we did manage to get a screenshot of the little guy and will be going back to finish the quest as soon as we possibly can. To see a screenshot of the little bugger go to Http://dualityofman.dhs.org. The reward for helping him is a coldain smithing hammer, which you turn in for the platinum coldain insignia ring quest. These are some real nasty bastards. I got hit for a total of 6 or 7 times before I died, each of the hits were over one hundred. Another thing worth noting is that I was invisible when it agroed me. Jumped out of nowhere and chased me down with sow too.

He was a dwarf who had apparently FDed or something conned green to me lvl 45 so i went up and smacked him, he stood up and vanished from sight but not from my target bar???

I hailed him (new to velious, he conned apprehensive to me) he told me he had been ambushed by the Kromrif, that he was hearing them coming now, that I should kill their leader (named, don't remember). Then 5 or 6 giants came running, I quickly hide/sneaked, and they killed him easy.

Anyone did that quest ?

mysterious dorf aggro?
# Jun 19 2001 at 7:56 AM Rating: Default
ok i was just leaving CC thru the tunnel zone with the geonids. I popped in that little hut outside the Ry`Gorr fort. Next thing i know a emmisary blocks the door (just my luck, i yap to my guild about it), then i see a dorf run up and start attacking me and the emissary does too!, i ran and ran around and couldnt root the damn dorf. Then thank god, a lvl 53 wizzie in my guild came out of CC, and helped me out with invis and i made it back in. This dorf was almost 100% MR, and resisted even lvl 53 spells, he conned blue to me at 43 and hit in the 90's sometimes doubled for 50-90's
RE: mysterious dorf aggro?
# Aug 28 2002 at 2:07 AM Rating: Decent
The dorf that attacked you is a traitor to the Coldain, hence why he won't be friendly even if you're ally to Coldain. In fact, he's on the Ry'Gorr Orcs faction.

Think i got the name right. I killed Ekelng Thunderstone and i then noticed her on track immediately after he died, could have been a track fluke. I tracked her to the Giant Fort around NW corner of zone. She is in the building with Fjoarin Icebane. She is a Female Thurgadin Dwarf. Blue to 51 and is invisible. Never hailed her as there was a giant in the room and didnt want to drop invis to chat atm. Though i read on these boards about her saying something about resuing her from being tortured. Going to try it. If all else fails i am gonna kill her. :P
Anengers
# Jun 15 2001 at 3:51 PM Rating: Default
I do not understand any of your claims of the Avengers popping immediately after Chief kills, there is no link as far as I understand. The Avengers pop if the 'messenger' makes his way into the fort. If the messengers are killed before getting into the fort, there will never be an avenger. Our group in many different times has killed many chiefs, with ZERO Avenger spawns....cause they ARE NOT CONNECTED! if a group is sitting on hill the messenger will try to attack them before running into fort. Why all the claims of immediate Avenger spawns when Chief drops? ...and how have I never seen an Avenger with my own eyes yet and am a 45 Cleric fighting in EW???

Happy Hunting: ) >
RE: Anengers
# Jun 20 2001 at 5:47 AM Rating: Default
The Avengers are a rare spawn that WILL spawn when the Chief is killed, just not always. I killed the the Chief MANY a time without incident, then was with a group of friends and boom, the Avengers came out and took everyone out as soon as the Chief dropped.

So just cause you have never seen something, doesn't mean it doesn't happen :)

I must agree with this, me and a bunch of my friends also killed the chief, he died on top of the little hill in front of fort gate. Next thing we know 2 Avengers coming running straight for us with blood in there eyes. Our chanter couldnt get Mez to stick on them (45chanter btw). they hit for me for up to 173dmg, ouch 8o. I am a 44lvl monk, 1 conned yellow and the other blue to me. Very Nasty, Very Tough, all my friends ranged from low 40's to high 40's, and we got rocked, but we gonna head there and see if we can get them to spawn again, Vengeance will be sweet =). This is my exp and my observation, hope it helps.

# Jun 09 2001 at 10:49 AM Rating: Decent
Hello every for those of you who are doing the codlain shawl quest, part 3 in perticular. You need to find Tanik Greskil. He is over by the entrance of Kael Drakkal. There is a big risk whne you are in this area because if you walk over the wrong place while searching a death squad will spawn and chase you until you zone or get killed. The fastest way is to just run into kael, its usually safe. Another thing you can do is grab your no drop potion and click around (it wont drop because it is no drop). You cna even find the death squad spawn place. It shows up as "You are to far away from You to trade" If you walk over that you will be jumped by a death squad. The Tanik click message is "You are to far away from stumble to trade" When you walk over the stumble message hopefully it says "You have stumbled over ? and revealed an injured coldain" This reveals Tanik. Hand him the potion (Vial Of Velium Vapors-Thurgadin Gate) He Thanks you hands you a note and despawns. Take the not to the guy in Thurgadi for your shawl :P.

I'm pretty sure the death squad spawns after that injured coldian dwarf despawns. I was running to kael and saw the dorf, hailed him, he told me something about how he needs his gate potion(that pottery quest guy), so i was getting ready to kill him and he said seek me out if you wanna help and despawned. Then i walked out around to the front of kael and was ambushed by the squad, luckily i got good giant faction though. I think its either the dwarf, or its just random because i hunt right infront of kael a lot and never have them spawn just because im hanging out right there.

To the person inquiring about the unnamed mob that could only be targetted by assisting each other, that mob exists in every zone in the game. It is called Pain and Suffering. My guild got together a group in the 50's and killed this mob in Lavastorm many, many times. No loot, no faction, and huge hit points. The experience was pretty horrible for the duration this fight takes. This is a lvl 50 mob and magic resistant. And yes, in Eastern Wastes under the dragon bridge, there are many of them, I have seen upwards of 20 at a time in this location.
When the mob hits you it says, ",hits you for 125 points of damage!" but when you kill it, it says, "You have slain Pain and Suffering". I believe this mob is necessary in each zone as a part of game mechanics. Respawn time is almost instant.
For you trackers out there, this mob shows up as a blank space on tracking, a good zone to find it in is Lavastorm, he lives in one of ths shallow lava pools along the zone wall. You must swim into the lava to pull it, and use F8 to target it.
Another place to find it is on the platform in the Lake of Ill Omen. If you ever pull goblins to the platform on the lake, and use a procing AE weapon, you will agro Pain and Suffering and it will attack you. The mob is otherwise indifferent until you attack it first.
Makes for some fun screenshots, and you can hand it weapons. When you do, it looks like a Shadowed Man. We did this to make it easier to see it when fighting.

just lost a party to at least one, probably a pair of these guys. I was taking triple hits of 172, (7 hits total, all for exactly 172). they hit HARD and fast, though appeared to be melee only.

Full party, low to mid 40's, bard, warr, monk, paly, shaman, cleric. (All other parties on the ry'gorr hillside were also wiped out).

Tanik and the Giant death squads are triggered traps. If you walk where the trap is you get either tanik or the GDS. Invis is useless. The traps move randomly around the area around keal. Unless you have sense traps you better pray it's Tanik that pops or you have a good SoW on or you've worked up that giant faction. ;)

Saw several (at least 5) of these blue/formidable to a level 52. They were lined up at the back of the fort. Maybe part of one of the quests that seem to be going on everyday now in EW. I didn't engage them as I was alone and didn't want to have to deal with evading a train of possibly sowed hard hitters.

invis and unnamed critters ?

While traveling through these lands, I and my party (4 people in their mid-to-high 40's) ran into several orcs. We proceeded to slay the beasts, as no orc deserves to walk the lands of Norrath. After the battle, we were discussing various things. Our druid noticed something on track with no name, and went to investigate. She prompted returned screaming and bleeding profusely. The beast was invisible and could only be targeted by assisting each other. Two paladins and a monk proceeded to whale upon the beast, making NO dent in its' health. Our druid fell after only 5 hits from this beast. The rest of us came near death before locating the dragon bridge and leaving the area.

Ideas?

*ooc* the critter was green to our 40th druid, hits for over 140 a whack, wasted the druid in about 5 hits...between 2 pallys and a monk, all over 45, we made a small dent in the hp's but it regen'd faster than we could hit it - the druid petitioned, and the gm told her it was a trap...she also mentioned there were about 2 dozen of these guys on track - no name - just a blank space where the name should be (unlike the ! critters in the Karanas)...this thing hit hard, fast, and regen'd unbelievably well...if you zone into EW on the dragon bridge, go slightly right to the orc hut - the unnamed mobs were behind the hut and slightly right (i think)...

g'luck!

Actually I believe that these are a bug that still has not been fixed. There are a bunch of them in the water just east of the Ry'Gorr camp near the EW bridge. You cannot see them even with see invis, but you can track them and target them with F8 when you are standing near them. If you are close enoggh they will say something like " says 'unable to open file EWOracleDespaen.exe' or at least something along those lines. I had a guide wipe them out one day cause a ton of them had built up, but the coders still have not done anything to keep it from happeneing. (and yes you can attack them, but i was getting my butt kicked by this thing, so i zoned)

As the GM said, its probably a Trap or another form of a triggered event. Possibly the one required for the 3rd Coldain quest, I dunno (You stumble over the snow and it falls away to reveal an injured Coldain.) Or possibly its a special spawn point for one of the other triggered events. Because of the way the Everquest client is set up, its given a "monster" object, but its not designed to be killed-- and in fact if it is killed it will botch up the event, whatever its supposed to be. So they code it to be extremely tough to kill.

Just goes to show you shouldn't go around whacking random mobs you dont' know anything about. :) Leave it be.
Kromrif Death Squad

So can someone clear it up and post the real reason? There are so many theories on this thread.
Let me tell my story: I was running thru the ravine intending to go to kael and bind a warrior friend. I had Sup Camo on, so did my Rallos Zek worshipping friend. The death squad popped when we were running Sow speed, Sup camoed thru the gates. Killed me and left my friend alone. So what is the story? They pick on random people? I didn't stop at the ravine at all.
RE: Kromrif Death Squad
# May 06 2001 at 10:50 AM Rating: Default
same thing happened to us...i'm a 45 druid and my partner is a 45 necro. we had on sup camo as well, and were nearing the zone to kael when we were ambushed by the death squad. it was kinda creepy cuz I didn't have them on tracking or anything, the message just popped up " you have been ambushed by the Kromriff Death Squad" and about 7 or 8 hits later ( i tanked so my pardner could live, since he has 200 less hp than mee =P wooot ) i was beyond dead. i can't remember what they hit for but i have around 1175 hp with my sld buff on, so it had to be 100+ ...the initial shock of what happened, combined with the fact that they stun like mofos was the reason why i couldn't get away...i had sow on, but by the time i realized what was happening, i was stunned over and over and low on hp so i couldn't move fast enough to get away from them...i couldn't see how many there were either, but seemed like 8 or more...all i could see were giant legs surrounding me..hehe...got a rez tho and vowed never to go that route again...they make porting into wakening seem like a kiddie ride =P

Hunting Ry'Gorr Fort
# Apr 30 2001 at 12:31 PM Rating: Excellent
*

I've been hunting around Ry'Gorr fort and Crystal Caverns for a couple weeks now as both a 35 cleric and a 40 paladin. This is one of the coolest (sorry) spots to hunt, but there are some common instructions people need.

1. Avoid the main building. Don't touch it, don't go near near it. (Until you're ready to go inside and fight.) The Chief, Oracle and Elites WILL agro through through the walls.

2. Know where the CC zone is and don't be afraid to us it! When you inevitably find the Chief and Oracle on your tail, please don't bring them back to the group. The best pullers make mistakes and zone to save the group. Before you try pulling from the fort, take the extra 30 seconds to locate the shed with the crystal and maybe even click the crystal so you know it works.

3. Stop and watch your pulls. There are no defined paths in and around the fort. Monsters will bump into walls, and many nasty deaths result from a single centurion attracting the attention of the chief. Also, an orc which gets "stuck" on the outside wall will teleport to you and get some free hits. With SoW and hopefully snare (rangers are the best pullers here), you have plenty of time to walk backwards around the inside of the wall, leading the orc safely to the gate. This also gives you time to consider the previous tip.

4. Don't hang out around the crystal. The main building is too close for any trains to be announced, and it is harder to click that crystal than you think.

There are three different types of parties here. It helps to understand your party's role when selecting recruits and pulls.

1. The uber-group will be found camped inside the main building. Personally, I wish these guys were off on a Plane fighting a dragon, but you'll sometimes for a bunch of 50+ people hording any Elite or better that pops. Don't expect to get any decent loot with this bunch of underachievers around.

2. The high-30's and low-40's. Focused on pulling Elites, the blacksmiths, and maybe with luck the chief. Tough mobs like these are normally fear kited and sometimes take 4 minutes or more to die. If you kill the chief, announce it via SHOUT, loot and ZONE to CC. Those Avengers will mash you like rotten tomatoes.

3. A mid-30's group can get a lot of experience, a few orc fang earrings and maybe a necklace or two. These guys will die fast if an elite comes for them. Focus on pulling centurions and legos from the four pillars and the two gate pops. Your downfall will be that level 40 you recruit who insists that you can take just one Elite. If you find you die too much here, move into Crystal Caverns.
