The Crystal Caverns are the site of Froststone, once home to the Coldain. Although the citizens of Froststone still have a small outpost in these caverns, the area is largely controlled by the Ry`Gorr Clan. Adventurers must also beware of the tentacle terrors and crystal spiders which have made homes out of the abandoned halls.

Karsenic Acid

While camping the herbalist, "A Bottle of Karsenic Acid" (magic lore nodrop) dropped once or twice. Does anyone have any idea what it is for?

if you give it to Efdarf Restil in Thurgadin he will give you a Gem of Persuasion. This can be used for the Kromif Military leggings (ac 14, +6 str, +5 wis, SvD, SvC) or you can use it in a Quest for the Coldain Military Wristguard (ac 10, +6 str, +5 wis, SvC, SvM) both items are All/All

The Dain (King of Dorfs) resides in Icewell Keep, a high lvl (50+) dungeon off Thurgadin. If anyone has done any hunting here, please visit CC and let us know if you can buy/sell from vendors here.

To get to the city: Get invis and levitate if possible, then go down to the bottom of the big pit and go through the tunnel. At the fork go right, keep following the path and you should get to the city. From the entrance to the city go right and run over a small bridge: right through the door is the bank. All the coldain seem to be dubious to most people although they were apprehensive to my dwarf cleric. The spiders and stalag terrors, located past the coldain city, seem to give very good exp for levels 35 to 40 or so. And if you get trained just run back to the city and run through it, since all the coldain that see the monsters will attack them. There is also a one way exit zone near the tunnel leading to the queen room, it's the black tunnel to the right of the spider tunnel. Just keep going up and up past a lot of geonids and you should reach the zone.
Other mobs in this zone...

In the Queen room and hallways, there's "a crystal lurker" that can spawn, which looks like a Drachnid and drops the Crystallized Two-handed sword.

Up in the orc area, there's "a Ry'Gorr inspector" which is rarish and drops crystalline belt every time from what I've observed (killed him 10 times or so total). There's also "Foreman Smason" who's just like the other Foreman but lower level (guessing around 30 to 32) and has the same loot (usually frozen weapons but rare foreman's skullcap).

Other than that all the mobs except for the huge number of named dwarfs are up there :)

I've also noted that there's a banker in the dwarf city midway through the zone where the orc section stops and that the dwarfs will NOT help you with any mobs. Great "guards", huh?
RE: Other mobs in this zone...
# Jan 07 2001 at 4:48 PM Rating: Default
I don't know if the guards will attack orcs since I've never trained orcs there, but I do know for sure that the guards AND merchants will attack all spiders, velium crawlers, stalag terrors ect. from farther in because I've trained them there MANY times and all the coldain always attack them.

Queens Room
# Feb 14 2001 at 5:44 AM Rating: Default
There is two other named spawns in this room
along with the Drachnid Retainer and Queen.
I was camping this room last night and got two
other Drachnid spawns but I can't remember the names off hand as I killed them too quickly both times I think they had common loot one had a crystalline sword and the other had an orc fang necklace, which is something like 3ac 2str 2cha 5hp from memory.
Thats right one is called a drachnid purifier and its the same level as the Retainer

Still trying to figure out a way to raise faction withe dorfs here. They all dubious to me. They wouldnt sell to a 35 halfling druid or a 50 DE Wiz, but they sold to a 37 Dwarf Warrior. Talking to many of them leads me to believe there are quests here but they are not working. One npc basically asks if you will do a quick task... talked to him for 10 minutes phrasing different things and he didnt respond after the initial exchange.
RE: Faction...
# Jan 08 2001 at 7:16 PM Rating: Default
Ok, i have noticed that high Cha will let you sell here. AS well as dwarfs being able to sell. Also, you cannot sow/wolf in here and dorfs hate wolf form anyway. But if you can Sneak, you can get behind a merchant and sell to them. Works like a charm for my 37 druid.

It is a fairly common spawn. If u are in the queens room u run back towards the Dwarven keep and right before u get to the 3 entrances to the 3 different tunnels is where he spawns. He drops a tight looking weapon i forget stats but it was decent but i think it would be more for looks. Think lv about 33 !? not positive

VERY rare spawn in the Queen's lair... unsure of what if anything it drops, in a 20 hour camp there, it spawned once, and dropped nothing... a guy i know who camps there all the time said he saw it once, and that it dropped the crystal webshield, but i've seen the webshield drop off of drachnid retainers twice...

Crystal Caverns...

Last night I went in with a few people from my guild (3 Druids, a Ranger, and a Monk, all mid 30's to low 40's). We were only in the Caverns for 3 or 4 hours, I'd guess. I reccomend doing this dungeon with a group of low 30's, where most of the mobs will be blue. At 40, most everything we fought was green. There were few blue Watchmen. Most of the Oracles were blue, as were both Foreman (Names escape me, at the momemt). One Foreman spawns on the lowest bridge, along with two other Orcs, ranging from blue to green. We had no deaths the entire time, as the Orcs aren't overly difficult =).. During a fight with the Foreman on the bridge, the Ranger's knockback wind proc he put on his weapons knocked an Orc into the mining pit below. Try not to do this, heh... pulled 4 or 5 mobs back up to us, which was challenging :).. I honestly cannot describe where the second Foreman spawns... there is a fork near the entrance, one of which leads to the center of the caverns with the networks of bridges, the other is a long corridor with quite a few Orcs in it, and at the end spawns the Foreman. As for the Herbalist, he is a different story. He spawns in random locations and runs through the Orc inhabited parts of the Caverns buffing any Orc he runs by. If you have the zone to yourself, he isn't hard at all to find. With 3 Druids and a Ranger, finding when he was up wasn't tough either =) First time we killed him, I looted the Herbalist's Pack, as I figured it would be weight reducing. Did a few tests, seems to be about 25%.. gave it to the Monk. Second time, we got the Blackened Crystalline Robes. That went by default to my Enchanter. It is 8 AC +5 Charisma +6 Intelligence +10 SV Cold and 3.5 weight, all pure Casting classes, a nice robe =).. Third time we killed him on the way out, and he dropped his Pack again, which one of the Druids won the roll on. This would've went to the Monk again, were they not Lore. We did go to the Coldain outpost in the snowy parts of the caverns, hit the bank, just explored a bit. They were dubious to us (Iksar, Wood Elf, Halflings), and I assume they are dubious to all. Don't really know how to raise faction with them yet. We didn't explore the Spiders and Stalag parts of the Caverns, as we were pressed on time, however, which was unfortunate. I believe we are making a second trip tonight, though (If Veeshan ever comes back up =)), so I'll post again if I find anything new =)
Tight Zone
# Dec 11 2000 at 3:49 AM Rating: Excellent
This is a great zone not just because of the looks of it but it is fairly easy to control and get great loot. The main mobs are around 30 to 34. Like any other zone a Enchanter and Cleric should be present. I have looted 3 good items here Herbalist Pack, Blackened Crystalline Robe and another Robe that could be worn by some Druids. To get to the Herbalist that drops all of this Zone in from the Orc fort run straight and stay to the left till u find the ice ramps that cross back and forth and go invis and lev down to bottom there are only about 7 spawns that will attack u and that is on a full pop so it should be safe to take all these with a chanter then just start raking in the Items and such. The Herbalist does spawn in many locations but i have found that is it easy to get to him from this bottom camp and he does spawn down there as well.
Good luck to all here!!!
Stevensmalls Walkingtallz 36 Druid
There are other parts of this zone i have not explored yet and plan too soon.
I wanted to perserve this zone from all sorts of High level camping though. If u dont get Exp from creatures dont kill them. Thanx!

Dungeon seems to be set up for a mid 30's to high 40's group.

Very extravagant dungeon layout. Contains a race of orcs, a dwarven outpost, a spiders lair, a lair of frozen tentacle terror type creatures and a few of the mineral men.

Magical chain armor drops off the orcs, some nice weapons and a necklace off the TT's and an upgrade to the Advisor's Robe off the Queen.

We annihiliated this place with 3 necros (all near or over 50) a 51 monk and a 51 shammie. Even after leaving, the 3 necros held the Queen's lair easily.

I would hope you take in consideration the rarity of crystaline silks in other locations. Unfortunately I will ne 'farming' spiders for their silks until I have mastered Crystalline Silk Armor. Probably from sure boredom and the anticipated need for pearls to then create Wu Armor I probably will kill a few geonids or something to get some kind of loot that will not be burned in tailoring.

Farming in a unused zone hmmm.. why is that bad.. it's not.. if a group of lvl 30s poped up and wanted to take the queen I'd move aside.. but as long as I'm the only one in the zone.... who cares?

I am sure you are sincere when you make this comment of giving up the camp for someone who could get exp from it--I have seen this comment numerous times. The reality is that it doesnt happen this way. I can't count how many times my group (usually a monk and bard with me as a cleric) have gone to check out some forgotten zone like Permafrost or Cazic (prior to their wacked out nerfing of it) and we'd be chomping our way thru the zone when some 50 th level comes along and takes over or says "I will be here awhile-my twink needs this". I wish people would be more like you and leave the camps for us but I greed is one of the biggest parts of this game. I guess thats why I will never suceed-I am not greedy enough. /shrug
