Yes, he does help. He just can't save you from a throng of goblins that's all. Sometimes he casts spells on himself which delays his kills. Run to the zone if you have a lot of goblins on your ***** or you'll die in Ran's library in the N section for n00b.

I was there last night. He helps now. Beware however his spells. He does cast an AE spell that will hit you. Just stay behind him.
