The correct persistent aura effect for this spell is https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/spell.html?spell=8505

This has been on my mind for years and I thought I'd finally say something.
When allah (or is it Zam now??) lists the details of spells it has a heading called duration.
I have always thought (and still do) that duration meant a time frame consisting of a beginning and an ending. So listing spells with a duration of 'instant' would (to my way of thinking) be a spell that is cast and gone immediately thereafter, like a direct damage spell. But a dot should have a duration of say 6, 8, 10 etc tics or 30, 45, 60 etc seconds (not all inclusive by the way).

So the above spell's duration would be 2 minutes as it lasts, casting its debuffs and such for a 2 minute duration.

Or have I missed the boat entirely. )) As I said just wondering... )))

Thanx for all the work done and continually done on these boards. ))
just what does duration mean anyways??

I know this post is a long time since the post I'm replying too however, maybe it will help others that are reading for confirmation.
When you cast this spell it will create a totem in the place you are standing, that action is immediate and that is why it says it's an instant spell, the totem itself lasts for a short time, a couple of minutes maybe. the good thing is that this spell is unresistable so if you're having trouble getting a higher level malo spell to stick then you can use this to lower magic resist to help you get the higher level malo spell to land.

The totem to my knowledge will debuff every mob that gets near it until it 'poofs'. If you're only getting one or two mobs on a pull then you can use the level 65 Malos spell, this one is also unresistable and lowers resists by 55 each instead of 40 like the totem, then you can cast the higher level malo and it will have a better chance of sticking, this is how I play it. Either way it's going to take up 2 spell slots, either your Idol of Malos and the higher lvl malo OR the unresistable lvl 65 Malos and the higher level of the malo line.

My SHM is 95 and on mobs that I have trouble landing spells like slows and DoTs I still use this option altho, I usually use the AA malo 1st then the high level one so I only use 1 spell slot. If that doesn't work ( the AA malo can be resisted ) then I load up the level 65 malo to cast 1st.

Most times I just use the AA malo and it sticks on the 1st try or 2nd try if it gets resisted.

In my opinion the only reason to use the Idol of Malo spell is if you're pulling to one spot really fast or multiple mobs at once and let it debuff the mobs so you can just work on slowing them, it makes it a lot faster than having to malo with a spell and then slow them. I have not used this spell hardly at all, I'm not sure how much aggro you will get if you pull more than one mob, if it puts you on the hate list 1st before the tank gets aggro then you may get smacked around, it'd be bad if that happens with multiple mobs peeling off to attack you.

Good luck, hope that helps some people out there.

I 100% agree with you! Duration should be the time that the spell lasts...not how long it takes to cast. That is what cast time is for.

This spell comes from North Ro 3rd mission (you only have to complete the third one for it!) Just like the Skylance Missions 3rd one gives you the group Heal over time spell.

This spell summons a Trap. It's like a pet in some reguards if no aggro on puller or puller FD's and no one did a Taunt that/those MOB/s will be after YOU. This spell works through doors and floors 150' it doesn't cast MALOS (-55 MR/PR/FR/CR) the spell it's actually only a -40(MR/PR/FR/CR) debuff to all mobs in that range... If a MOB moves out of range of Idol it's effects instantly wears off (Should last 5 ticks but doesn't)...

Uses: Don't have a key to a room but want whatever in there to come out drop Idol and expect all after you! (VS is good Idea to have up)... Want to pull to a spot drop Idol and run back to camp (any mob walking in range will come to you for 2 min). Raids in an AE fight it's good to drop the Idol AE taunt will grab aggro to tank so no big deal there. We have it restricted on our raids to sides because of the TARGETING problem unlike a pet or ward you press F8 and IDOL will be the first thing on your target...(Hopefully going to fix this issue) This spell is mainly SITUATIONAL and extremely deadly for the shaman that casts it.

If your using spell be sure to load in skills box "Remove Trap" that way you can remove it and move up and cast it again... This spell is bearly better then Hungry Plague. WARNING: Can get aggro trhought floors and doors associative aggro works also... Once mob/s leave 150' the wimpy malos spell instantly wears off... This thing screws up F8 & Toggle Nearest NPC targeting (1st on list) It's considered a trap yet the caster get's aggro (humorous like it's got a plaque "<char name> placed here")

The PoR spell quests were changed (read: 'nerfed') awhile back. You can no longer get the spell/aura by completing only Skylance 3 or Takish 3, because the spell is no longer a cursor reward. You must hail Ao the Fourth Born (Arcstone) or the Queen (Elddar Forest) to receive your spell/aura.

Found this out the hard way on my Cleric; only wish the GM I pestered had had the brains to tell me they changed it. I felt like a total *** for insisting s/he was wrong and the damn thing was broken, after finding out on my own. lol

As of 5/23, you do get the spell/aura reward for Skylance 3 (The Laboratory) without having to have the other 2 completed. I'm not sure if this is due to ToB being opened up or not. I assume the same applies to the Nro missions, this one and the spell rewards in particular.

After using this for a week I have some DO's/ Don'ts.

This spell is received as a reward for completing a quest.

When cast it created a "spirit IDOL" (read this as trap). When creatures come within about half your normal cast range to the trap. It casts Malos effects on them. It keeps casting malos on targets in area unil it expires. then cast a new trap.

This works great when your puller brings pulls past or near the trap. They get Malo'd and you, and your CC people get debuffed mobs to debuffs, DD, DOT.
This works bad when puller brings back mob(s) and doesn't have aggro... cause when the trap casts on the mobs... they now see u as a caster on them og a low aggro spell... and try to kill you. Make sure all mobs brough into range have aggro onto a tank or it will be on you.
Restrict use of this on raids, it is great for debuffing mobs. However when one comes in and doesn't have aggro on a tank, this trap will mean it aggros to you. This is bad if puller brings in say 6 mobs in Time or some such w/ aggro established on 1. other 5 are coming to you unless mezzed or some such CC.

On the plus side putting this up when soloing means that every mob u pull is malo'd to let you jump stright to slow and DOT.

Just my experience so far. Sure we will figure best plans to use it over time.

Confirmed that you do three missions in North RO. Spell casts a totem that cast malos on nearby mobs every tick. This does tend to aggro adds, mobs pets, on you. The totem lasts for 2.00 mins. Can effect NPCs, like the queen who gives you the spell, as I had to run to zone with her beating on me.
Got mine tonight :)

MAGIC ITEM NO TRADE
Level needed: Shm 70
Skill: Conjuration
Mana Cost: 200
Spell Effect: Conjures an idol at your feet that will inflict nearby enemies with a curse that will lower their fire, magic, poison and ice resistances.
WT: 0.1 Size: Small
Race: ALL
-------------------------------------
I completed 3 tasks that are gotten from North Ro and received this after completing the 3rd.
NOTE: We changed clerics on 3rd mission and he still got his spell. Sounds like as long as someone in your group has done mission 1 and 2 you can just do the 3rd to get the spell.

Good luck!

I suspect this is one of the new DoDH spells, I sure hope so, Farrel just isn't getting it done anymore. It won't be found in any of the merchant shops, lol. Good luck and share the info.
