I, too, haven't summoned a monster pet for a long time. But I just dinged 50 and got MS II, so I thought I'd give it a try. That one pet took several forms as I moved around: a construct in Karnor's Castle, a chicken in Dreadlands, an earth elemental in PoK, a beetle in North Karana, a little yellow spider in East Karana. However, anywhere I fought, he seemed almost to chain cast the feral claw spell, and it seemed to be fairly damaging. The MS II pet is quite effective - and the spell graphics are nice.
I have used Monster Summoning many times before, but had not played my mage for a while. I was hunting in Great Divide and noticed that my summoned Tizmak (don't laugh!) was casting this.
So unless I'm very much mistaken this must have been added very recently, perhaps to make the MonSum creatures more appealing than the standard elementals.
