The damage done by this spell is 40 hit points times 3. I have tested it enough times to know for a fact. I believe it crosses the line between DD and DoT spells in that it is a DoT but doesn't last very long at all. You could say it does 40hp direct damage and then 40 per tick for two ticks. Either way 60 is just plain wrong as is 180 (I'm not gonna say where I've seen that figure).

No, if you watch the damage messages, you can clearly see that this spell is actually three waves of a maximum of 60 points damage for each wave that is checked against the target's Poison Resist.
If you're seeing numbers less than that, it is due to partial resists, as the resist is checked three times, once at the open of each wave - with each wave being 1 tick (or 6 seconds) apart.
