AOE hits all mobs around you.

Wrong. PBAE hits all the mobs around you (thus the acronym, Personal Body Area of Effect)

An AOE hits all the targets in the area of your target.

edit: Both are subject to the limit placed by Sony on the amount of targets the spell can effect per cast. For instance, Druid AE spells can only hit 4 mobs... thus why we "quad".

There are two types of AE (Area Effect) spells, and there are subtle differences between them.

PBAE (Point-blank Area Effect): These spells are centered on you. You do not have to target any mobs with this type of spell. When it goes off, ALL mobs within a certain radius from where you are standing take the damage from the spell (i.e., there is no limit to how many mobs are affected by this type of spell).

Targeted AE (Targeted Area Effect): These spells are centered on whatever you have targeted when you cast the spell. Then, damage is dealt to mobs within a certain radius around your target. The difference between targeted AE and PBAE spells is that targeted AE damage spells affect up to a maximum of four mobs. For example, if you have seven mobs all bunched together, you have one of those seven mobs targeted, and then you cast a targeted AE spell on that mob, then your targetted mob and three more mobs nearby to it will take damage; the remaining three mobs will be unscathed.

The latter is what druids commonly use to quad kite. Why not use PBAE spells instead in order to get more mobs? Well, if you are hunting mobs that give you exp (i.e., dark blue [or rather what is now split between light blue and dark blue]) and you are using PBAE spells, that means you will be taking a lot of damage since you have to get the mobs really close to you for PBAE's to affect them, and at that point in time, you will have all of those blue cons beating on you while you wait for your spell to go off.

First, PBAE means Point blank area effect. Second, PBAE's aren't limited by number of mobs it can effect, which is why bards could AE kite 50+ mobs, and why AE groups can wipe up the spiders in velks in 1 or 2 pulls.
