The primary purpose of this spell is to allow your pet to survive massive AE's such as those put out by Solusek RO and Fennin Ro. Since the AE's fire once every 30 sec or so it can often last the entire fight or you can just refresh it.
It is not really meant to counter melee damage, although it can act as a rune for that purpose.

will this protect from rampage/enrage attacks or is that calculated differently? if it does this would be worth it. for a necro the mana is nothing and it could save the pet from dieing and keep it fighting and not really worry about it

And as stated below lasts about 30 min or 5 hits. It's only worth casting on your pet if your going up against something that hits over 1K per hit. It's a waste if your pet gets hit for 100s.
500 Mana
1K hits X 5 = 5,000K HP for 500 mana = rox!
100 hits X 5 = 500 HP for 500 mana = sux!

I bought this one, lvl 64 version in Guk Theme, 650 points. Very useful in the right situations, mana cost can be fairly steep though at times, especially against AE rampage type mobs.
Is our whole Caliav line sold in EC or does it vary? Don't want to spend months getting points for fruitless searching :(

Hang out in Nro ( LDoN ), gather 650 points and you'll have it. I can get it now, but would rather buy the Summoners Boon at 750 before. Did somone say this is buyable in Everfrost as well?

Ok, well last night I noticed a little kick in the nuts that Sony has put in for us. Whereas, the classes that have these new spells available to them use the same spell, however, they are class specific when you buy it. For instance the BL that posted here he bought his in Everfrost, for BLs that will work, however for mages you have to do two Nro adventures to get to use the merchant. The cost he listed is most likly the same cost. When dealing with getting adventure points to get the new spells, I think back fondly to the hard as all hell quests from LOY and think, you know. They werent so bad.

I just recently purchased the level 58 pet rune spell Guard of Calliav for 410 adventure points in the Everfrost Miragul adventures so if you want to get the level 64 version then it'll be around 650 points or 700 range. In my opinion the use of the spell at the grouping and raiding level of being in Elementals is useless and not sure if the 64th level one will be anybetter. I used the 58th level one in a duel or two lasted somewhat a while.
If this spell absorbs a set number of hits, and not a specific number of damage. I would think that it would be even MORE useful in EP on mobs that hit for over 1250 per hit. Getting more bang for your buck imo. Even helping your pet last for more than one combat round, long enough to pop mend companion on it.

From what I saw on Beta about this spell is it's a pet rune type spell that last around a half hour or 5 hits from high lvl mobs, before they take any dmg.

By the looks of the Icon and what is on Lucy's site it could be an Invulnerable type spell like clerics have.
This is a new spell currently on test that will likely be released with Lost Duneons of Norrath.
What it does is still a mystery. Some say it protects pets from AE damage, some say it is a pet rune. Guess we will find out in a few weeks.
