Last weekend we set up some aoe. A couple other mages had this spell while I was stuck using Scintilation. All of us managed to hit 12 mobs per wave. While I was doing 800ish points per mob they were doing 1050. Doing the math that's 3000 more damage per cast than I was doing.

Keep in mind, this was a warm up practice pull. Care to calculate what a real pull would have done?

Typically, if you have both spells, you would be using both spells and recasting as they become available again. This spell and Scintilation are great if you are farming green mobs, or there just happens to be a large number of green mobs around what you are farming.

If I'm farming something like velium, I like to pickup about 10 orcs and just cast this spell once or twice while my pet picks them off one by one. The only problem is that I run out of orcs pretty fast. :)

You're right, but you've also made a slight oversight... Compare the mana costs between Scintilation and Wind of the Desert: Scint is 399 mana, Wind is 780. Two casts of Scint is nearly the same amount of mana. When you look at the damage, Scint x2 is ~1200 and Wind is ~1000.

The only time Scint isn't worth using is when you're in a pinch for time... but the refresh isn't so long that I see this really making a difference, even for PoP trials.

If we take a closer look:

Scintillation: mana 361, casting time 3, recast time 6
Wind of the Desert: mana 780, casting time 6, recast time 12

So Scint is less than half the mana cost, half the cast time, and half the recast time.

Now consider chain casting. Total time from cast 1 to cast 2:
Scintillation: 9
Wind of the Desert: 18

So the Scint mage will cast twice and be ready for cast 3 at the same time that the Wind mage is ready for cast 2. The Scint mage will have higher damage output at reduced mana cost, in the same time frame.

I guess it comes down to knowing what to use in what situation. I believe in filling my ******* with every weapon available to me, and doing my best to know which is the most appropriate to use in whatever circumstance. This is how we become most effective imo.

I too have been having some trouble getting winds of the desert work as an offensive spell, as opposed to just an emergency 'damage all my attackers' spell.

In my experience, WotD's noticeably higher recast time combined with the higher mana cost + the relatively minor damage upgrade actually make it less efficient than Scintillation, which I use religiously. If I get surrounded by mobs, it's going to be scintillate, over and over, while my pet beats down the mobs and the cleric heals. It's effective, it works, and I always have it memmed. Winds of the desert - not so much.

One thing though - if you *really* like point-blank spells, you could cast WotD while scintillation's reuse timer is refreshing. Then you'll get a bit of use out of it. It isn't a horrible spell, just not as efficient as scintillation.

My 2 cents.

I know this is a little late but you also need to consider the resist rate, maybe Wind of the Desert doesn't get resisted as much?

You should also consider the fact, that PBAE Spells are not limited to 4 targets, so you can use it in AE groups with good effect.

First, its an area efect spell, so if you have 3 or 4 mobs it could be as much as 4200 pts damage for 780 mana.

Second, CAPSLOCK OFF PLEASE.
