This spell has a far better hp/mana ratio than it higher level brother Renew Bones. Mend Bones heals 2 hit points for every 1 point of mana.

On the other hand, Renew Bones heals 1.232 hit points per 1 point of mana (level 29) to 1.4 hit points per 1 point of mana (level 50).

I understand that you need to heal your pet quickly at times, but if you have the time to spare, I would recommend Mend Bones over Renew Bones.
