This resists less because it has a -30 Magic Resistance check when it is cast on a mob - that is a major advantage over Root.

So what are the advantages/disadvantages of this spell as opposed to Greater Immobilize? Obviously this one has a greater duration, and I'm guessing that the other is less likely to be broken, but I don't know that. Any thoughts?

One casts faster but doesn't last as long... mainly for if you need a mob rooted very quickly (like a mob is beating on you or running at you and you need to root it quickly so you can get away from it). This one casts slower but lasts longer. This spell is best for root/dotting.

ive noticed this spell not only gets resisted less, but holds longer than paralyzing earth. i rootdot on occasion, so spells that hold well are good tidings for me. i can rootdot the elementals in BoT and this spell gets resisted less than my snare.. obviously.. so if i get resisted on a snare, this spell has little chance to break while i get my other spells to stick.
