You're all missing the point..

This spell works on *any* pet that you summon... can you say: XUZL?! That is what this spell is useful for.

If it was meant only for Xuzl, why do we get the buff at this level and the sword at 59? That makes no sense at all.
I'll tell you why

Familiars are slightly more than jsut mana buffs. They are magic asorbing buffs as well. What first cuaght my eye was when I was fighting some goblin spellcasters. I got the message, "Your familiar is no longer mailased" or something similar. The goblin had cast the spell on the familiar instead of me. Saving me from being hit from this.

And while familiars don't fight or cause damage, they do act as diversions sometimes and a mob will go after them, instead of you.

We were after Gull Skytalon in the Ocean of Tears. After two hits of Inferno Shock, Gull decided I was number one enemy. But after hitting me a few times, Grubby (as we ahve named my Familiar) flapped into sight and Gull started pounding on Grubby instead. Hey great, no one in the party was getting hit and taking damage, I hit Gull once more with a spell and blam, he was dead. And because Grubby was taking the hits adn not me, no spell interruption from being hit.

The familiar only comes into action to be hit or take damage, I have noticed, when you have taken a lot of damage yourself.

But if the familiar isn't around your to be seen, it can't do this.

I would imagine that most wizards never get to that point of seeing their familiar take one for them. usually by that point the rest of the party is dead, and the wizard is running.

So a buff spell for familiars, if the familiar is actually helping you, is a good spell.

I know nothing you read about says anything about familiars take a spell effect or pulling aggro off you, but it ahs happened for me.

What on earth are you talking about? Have you mistaken the wizard's familiar for an enchanter's pet? A familiar does *not* draw agro from you. Ever. It neither takes damage nor 'distracts the enemy.'

Now *I* will tell you the *real* use of this spell. (Such as it was, at least)

Once upon a time, in a game far, far away, a wizard could not banish their familiar and still retain all it's benefits. If you wanted increased mana pool, spell casting levels, elemental resistance, mana regeneration, and see invis, your familiar had to have been out and about. Period.

Now, how exactly is (or was) this spell ever useful? Because guess what: Even though your familiar does not take damage for you, or draw agro, it is still victim to enemy area effect spells. So if lizardman_shaman_01 casts AE poison rain on your group, and you and your familiar were within range, *both* of you took damage. This spell was intended to prolong the life of your familiar, should it ever come to take damage, because as all you wizards out there may already know, summoning the bugger takes a ton of mana. And if you're not well-versed in your conjuration practices.. well I'm sure you get the idea. In addition to regular mobs, think of the countless raid encounter mobs that use area effect spells as well.

Note: This, of course, means absolutely nothing today. Wizards can banish their familiars, at will, and still keep all bonuses in the form of a buff in your buff window. A wizard who still keeps their familiar out (like myself) probably do so for the pure novelty of it.

why?

what is the point? as soon as i cast the familiar spell i type /pet get lost
so i dont have damn thing following me around and i still get the buffs from it...or is there some advantage to keeping the annoying little thing alive?
Do I really need this?
# Feb 15 2002 at 9:37 AM Rating: Decent
I still don't see a real reason to get excited about this spell. My familiar doesn't ever seem to get into this kind of trouble. Only once when I AoE myself did my Familiar die. Other than letting it keep up with me? What else is good about it?

Try fighting AE casting froglok wizzies, Grav Flux is death to a familiar. And your own AE doesn't effect your pet, even if you get caught in your own AE.

Trust me, I fight in Seb a lot. A whole lot. And froglok wizzies are all over Seb.
