Research

The pure casters can research and write their own spell scrolls to add to their spell books. A number of different spells can only be gotten through research.

For each pertinent class, what it the best way to use and develop this skill? What researched spells should you be concentrating on learning? How can you develop the skill high enough to learn the right spells? Where can you find the spell materials?

Post the best strategies for researching spells, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

You cannot raise your TSs past 300 raw skill until you have the Empires of Kunark expansion and purchase the additional ranks of the corresponding TS mastery AAs. The first of the ranks which offers you a way to increase your skill cap is at level 60 and the subsequent 9 ranks come every 5 levels after that with each rank allowing you to gain up to 5 more skill. These additional skill points are awarded based upon how many qualifying TS recipes which you have learned in the associated TS.

So for a level 75 Magician you could buy rank 4 (20AAs), 5 (25AAs), 6(30AAs), and 7(35AAs); at rank 7 you would be capable of getting up to 20 additional skill points if you have enough learned recipes. The subsequent ranks follow the same 5 point skill cap increase, and each rank's cost also increases by 5.

http://www.townshiprebellion.com/tradeskills-home is a great place to find recipes which you have not learned yet.

At this moment it appears level 85. It generally is 10-15 levels lower than max. See http://eqtraders.com/recipes/recipe_quicklist.php?rsa=Spell%20Research&menustr=080105000000 for a pretty thorough list of all research recipes with known trivials.

Will someone please explain to me how I, as a cleric, can do spell research? I tried using the spell research kit and it says I can't combine in that container. Is there a how to guide some where for a cleric on how to do this? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

binding powders are easier to find and allow a skill up path for pure casters. It is not fair to Non-Pure Casters to be locked out of such a path. Please add some kind of path for us too.

Non casters can also use powders. Collect them and then have a caster convert them for you. Then you can do the final combines since it is droppable after they make the initial combine. So befriend a caster and tip him for his time.

This information was incorrectly posted. Apologies.

I recommend doing the freebie research in Crescent Reach to get to 54, then making tomes, then manuals which can take you to 243. After you can do the combine for Researcher Ceramic Clay which trivials at 262. Then it's an expensive path to 300 with tomes.

Good luck!

Can you elaborate? Which specific combine can Hybrids do, in the Binding Powder line of Research? I do not see how a class other than Pure Caster (Enc/Mag/Nec/Wiz) can make any portion of a recipe that uses Binding Powders. I am a Paladin, trying to get my Research Skill up, but it's extremely difficult above 243.

I'll use Refined Scroll of Static Strike as the example I tried:
Recipe: Ink of Druzzil Ro (bought) + Quill of the Arcane (bought) + Refined Enchanted Spell Parchment (crafted) - In a Spell Research Kit by Enc/Mag/Nec/Wiz.
Hybrid cannot use Spell Research Kit ("Your class cannot do tradeskills in this container")
Hybrid cannot perform this combine in a Hybrid Research Kit ("You cannot combine these items in this container type")

Refined Enchanted Spell Parchment
Recipe: Piece of Parchment (bought) + Refined Binding Powder (dropped) + Refined Binding Solution (bought) + Refined Spellcaster's Empowering Essence (summoned) - In a Spell Research Kit by Enc/Mag/Nec/Wiz
Hybrid cannot use Spell Research Kit ("Your class cannot do tradeskills in this container")
Hybrid cannot perform this combine in a Hybrid Research Kit ("You cannot combine these items in this container type")

Having finally dinged 300 and got my master research trophy I thought I would pass on a few tips:

By far the easiest route is to use binding powders. Get the spell caster essence spell for your research level and convert the powder into an enchanted spell parchment. when you have converted all your powder, turn the spell parchments into scrolls of fire strike. Yes, you get two goes per powder. Even if you are buying the powders at 100+ each, it is far cheaper than making solutions for spells.

I have noticed that using powders seems to give you more skill up too. Not sure if this is true as it may just be a streaky RNG. But even at a skill of 290 (counting the fire scrolls) I was getting 3-4 skill ups per stack of powders (at lower level you get more than 3 per stack of course). I got 1 at best making a stack of spells.

So, get your skill ups with binding powders and then make spells that are trivial to sell and earn the cash to pay for more powders.

There is no point bothering with elaborate, ornate or runed powders as their trivial is well over 300. Intricate will do just as well.

When making spells, you can save 20% on the cost of the solutions if you make them yourself. You can buy all the bits from the vendors in pok.

In total, I would estimate around 100 stacks to ding 300. With judicious buying and hunting your own powders, this will cost around 150k, which is nowhere near the millions posted elswhere and yu can make this back easily on the sale of spells as you go. Making master researcher cost me NOTHING.

Get your trophy straight away, it's much easier. Until you get to journeyman, use a geerlock as well as your trophy. That way you get the 5% from the geerlock and your trophy evolves. When your trophy gives you 5%, sell your geelock.

Dont forget the 95% rule. There is always a 5% chance of failure. This means that your effective skill is higher than your actual skill. For example, when you get to 300, your trophy will boost that to 345 but you can still make spells with a trivial of 402 within the 95%. In other words, with a maxed out trophy, your effective research level is 402.

I got my shaman to 243 mostly doing solvents and was told that despite no listing on Eqtraders and Alla I could do the shaman spells in my prayer binding book. This worked on the triv 262 shaman spells then I ran out of those scrolls. I tried some 332 or so triv shaman spells and it told me I could not do them. Is this because they are too high for a level 252 to do or what? I would like to get him to 345 like the rest of the tradeskills.

Hi fellow researchers. Have had a lot of fun experimenting with combines to figure out spells that have no recipe on either Alla or eqtraders. However, I have never been able to reseach an Ancient spell (there are dozens of these starting with, I think, Luclin). Has anyone ever been able to successfully research an Ancient spell? I'm not asking for your recipe if you have, just whether or not it's possible. Or did Sony ever expressly state that these could not be researched?

Had a mate ask me about his shammy doing spell research. Needed to know what book to buy....and where to go for info.

I wasn't even aware shammy, druids, etc. could do spell research??? News to me...but I get the impression it's a spendy, difficult road. Probably just easier to make an intel char and level up.

Making spells is a money maker. I keep my prices a little over cost, and once you get up in the mid 60's+, you can farm most of the papyrus, parchments, some vellums, etc. Many can be bought in bazaar for fair prices...but the "profit grabbers" are always asking a ton more than what they are worth. Just watch the prices!

I special order for folks for cost. If they don't want them...or I usually make 3-4 at a time..then I sell the extras in bazaar for a mark-up...but not much more than to comp my time.

Biden Thyme...and enjoying the view!

If you're a Druid, you may as well forget it. I checked EQTraders, and the first spell you can make is Aura of the Grove at 171. Combines in the 60's involved gold bars and gems. If you're an 85 with unlimited funds, go ahead and relieve your boredom. If you're bootstrapping, it's an unrealistic goal.

Melee Classes

Unfortunately melee classes are not able to follow the same skill up path as the Int casters to gain their skill ups. Forget going to CR to learn research to 54. You cannot learn anything with a skill of 0 and in order for you to gain just one point you must visit your respective guild master to learn the skill research. Once you pay the small fee to learn the first time, it will automatically bounce your skill to equal your level (level 85 melee class toon will have a Research skill of 85). Thus no need to go to CR. However, do get your trophy quest at this point. Not obtaining that quest early will come back to bite you later.

Skilling up can be difficult as a melee class and very expensive. Often being forced to make various parchment solutions to skill up to a certain point. After which you'll be collecting a lot of used parchments and making various level 61 tomes.

Expect to spend well over a million or two platinum to max out. This trade should not be attempted by anyone of the melee class that cannot afford to blow 200k in one sitting for say 5-10 skill ups and have nothing else to show for it and no way to regain what you spent.

Good luck to all.

Thanks, Sony-Everquest team, for making yet another skill unusable by the common player.

With this being just another plat sink, is it possible for the EQ team to make a skill for us common players who don't buy plat off the chinese farmers?

We need spells, too, and can't always kill the super raid mobs.

The big change in Spell Research has sent a lot of people scrambling to find valid, current information about this tradeskill. Just a thought, but it might help if the posts about the old research system were removed from the topic discussions.

Also, there seems to be a significant difference between INT caster research (like mages) and other researchers (like SKs). It might help if there were separate topic discussions for caster and non-caster research.

I was wondering if someone might be able to help with which class uses which research kit? I know the research kit is used by NEC WIZ MAG & ENC, and the Hybrid research kit is used by SK's. Also that the prayer writing kit is used by druids. But that's about it. Not too sure which class uses the tome binding kit. If anyone has a list of class and kit that would be most helpful.

the actual mechanics of beginning research
# Dec 23 2008 at 11:16 AM Rating: Decent
Hello all,

Ok, sounds like most people are pretty pissed...

I have a 26 mage...first time I'm trying research and having a bit of trouble getting started.

I understand I can go to CR to get quests up to level 54. I further understand binding powders can be used in place of other mats...

However, I'm kinda floundering with regard to actually getting started. I did the concordance quest and tried getting started that way...still confused.

So, I guess my question actually is...if I do the quests from Cresent Reach, does that not only get my skill up cheaply, but teach me the "how to" with regard to research?

I fletch with my Warrior and that seems ever so much less complicated, and I'm sure once I have the epiphany research will be fine as well...I just don't seem to be able to gather the info to get started.

Thanks all!
the actual mechanics of beginning research
# Dec 23 2008 at 10:25 PM Rating: Decent
The learning curve for the new research system is very steep.

Doing the quests in Creacent Reach is free but will not give you the slightest clue of how to do research the 'real way'.

The concordance you quested is obsolete and no longer has a purpose. You need to obtain a spell research kit in the PoK.

Look up the recipes for binding powders and craft those to get your skill up. As with all skills this will get more expensive as you progress.

Unless you have the mind of SOE you will have to look up a recipe for every spell you try to make. I bought and read all of the ingame material that explains how to do research and it left me quite confused. What you need to know is this.

Spell research kit will combine the following into a spell:

A thickener, an ink, a quill, a paper, an additive.

there are loads of subcombines to make spells and some take multiple inks etc.
ten item combines are not uncommon. Stick with it and you will figure it out. It is empowering to be able to grind out spells. Good luck and I hope in some way I have cleared the fog for you.

P.S. Many of the subcombines are now not neccesary as you can by completed inks and things in the PoK near the small bank. Once you no longer need these items for the purpose of skilling up this will save you a load of time.

Now there is a subcombine for the Mats. Each mat has to be cured to use in the spell. There are different ways to cure the Mat to make it level appropriate for the spell.

Example:

Level 60 Mage spell: Monster Summoning 3

Ink Additive of the Nameless (bought)

Quill of the Arch Convoker (bought)

Conjuring Thickener (bought)

Ink of the Companion (bought)

Fine Runic Papyrus (crafted)

Subcombine for the Fine Runic Papyrus:

In Spell Research Kit celestial cleaner (crafted), Sooty fine runic papyrus (dropped), and Fine runic papyrus Solution (crafted or bought).
