Pottery

The potter can make vessels that can hold things and that are often used by other trades.

What are the best strategies on developing and using the pottery skill? What recipes are the most and least useful? Which classes are best suited to be potters? Which cities are best to practice your trade? Can you make a profit off of pottery, and if so how?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the pottery skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Small deities
# Aug 18 2000 at 4:18 AM Rating: Decent
I just did some of them and it's a nice item. The ones I found recipes for are protection and resistance. Then I started out to find new ones. Just by trying combinations 1. small block of clay cheapest gem, 2. same with block of clay, 3. same with large block of clay. I went up the cheap gems like this without finding a new recipe. To go all the way up I decidied not to do, because I am sure that somebody has tried already. So up to now we seem to know that wolf's eye agate and carnelian work. Whoever has tried and knows what else does not work please post it here. Of course if you found a new recipe.
I would be ready to join forces in a research project on this issue. Maybe some gems work with skins. Maybe there is only one more. I doubt at least that there are only two.

I am a 19th level iksar shaman who decided that it was worthwhile to go into pottery (2 quests required it and the small deities are useful). Anyhow i noticed a 29th lvl spell called "imbue amber cazic thule" i do not know what the spell does, but i suspect that it enchants amber in order to make a more powerful small deity. when i find a more powerful shaman i will ask them about that spell.

Don't forget that by including an imbued gem in the armor, you are limiting who can use that armor. The upside of imbued arms and armor? Imbued items grant stat increases based on the diety imbuing the gem.

Ferinstance:
Imbue Amber - Cazic Thule restricts any item using that gem to being used by followers of Cazic Thule ONLY. Stat increases would be appropriate to followers of the God of Fear.

An item using a gem imbued by Rodcet Nife would grant different stats.

Could you post some recipes for small deities? I would be very interested in making some of these from my Iksar monk and other players. Much appreciated.

The Troll, Barbarian, animal are recipes for cookie cutters.

The recipe is in the Allakhazam list of recipes.

Don't know if there are specific recipies for Troll or Barbarian. I doubt it. They are supposedly equipable by any cleric, druid, or shaman regardless of race. I say supposedly since the last I heard about the small deities, they were broken and no one could equip them. I can't remember what if any slot they were supposed to fit in [they WERE broken :(]. So, no, the deities are neither golems nor pets. Just items.
food lasts longer ??

is there any truth to the rumor that food and water will last longer if kept in a jar or other potted storage device ?

I don't know but I think it's possible. I put my food in them in case it does work.

No, I think you are mistaken here.

Food/water does not go stale and rot away. It will keep forever if you do not consume it (put some in the bank and see). The rate at which you consume food is based on your race (big guys need to eat and drink more). Every n minutes, you will consume a drink/food. if you have none on you, you get the 'You are thirsty/hungry' message. Putting food in a container does not stop you having to eat...

As an aside, I also noticed that I tend to drink slightly more than I eat (Barbarian, with rations and water flasks). This usually equates to 1 more water than ration over a stack of 20. I keep meaning to try this out with other food to get some comparisons for length of time foods last, but have only really just started baking, so have not experimented with this too much.

Slightly out of topic - Baked foods also have the advantage of being lighter than rations, typically weighing 0.1 instead of 1. A small investment in baking can save you both carrying weight and money. You can buy ingrediants for typically the same price as rations, and produce food that weighs a lot less. With the right ingrediants, a success results in multiple food (mammoth sandwiches/steaks spring to mind, a success gives you 5! That's gotta be worth getting baking to 60-70, especially if you are in Halas).

Kral, it's not so much that it would rot and you would consume the food and water at a slower rate.

True on baking, but snake eggs weigh 0.1 and cost 5 copper from a vender.
RE: food lasts longer ??
# Sep 06 2000 at 11:51 AM Rating: Excellent
Yes, but have you ever found more than 10 eggs on a vender? I would guess that most people know that they can be used as food, and so never sell them. I am lucky if I can find 6 or so in a week, and that is from visiting every vendor in fp/ecommons (just after a patch, I may be lucky and get a few more).

I have been working on baking lately, and have had to resort to laying waste to the newbie area in west freeport to get enough eggs to be able to practice baking past 135 (a barbarian needs LOTS of eggs to raise skill, believe me :( ).

You might also notice that not many people actually hunt snakes if they can avoid it - when I was snake bashing in fp, just about everyone was running right by the snakes, and going for orc pawns or fire beetles (not sure what newbies made of a lvl 40 rogue running round backstabbing every snake in sight:) ).

Anyway, after a few hours of non-stop snake bashing, I have around 5 stacks of dough to make a few more pies when I get the chance. 3 stacks managed to get me 3 skill raises. I have since bought some more int gear, so hopefully I will get to 142 before I run out....

Kral.

PS, I was snake bashing last night whilst drunk (don't ask), and I managed to get 9 eggs in 10 mins. I had sobered up after the 10 mins, and got an astounding 2 eggs over the next 15 mins. I was constantly hunting snakes each time. Coincidence? I intend to try it again next time I need eggs (it may not have any effect on egg yields, but it certainly makes bashing snakes a bit more interesting!)

Why don't you just buy muffins? They cost 5 copper and weigh negligible amounts.

If your a Shaman, Cleric, or Druid, getting Snake eggs are a BREEZY. I decided to max out my Baking one day so I went to WFP, set at the gate & shouted that I would buff any one with any of my 49'th Level Druid Buff's for only 1 snake Egg each or I would buy the eggs at 1gp each. As I was getting the Eggs I was makeing them into dough & cooking Veggie pies. By the time I got from 136 to 148 in Baking that day It had been like 1 hour & I still had over 40 eggs left & newbie still bringing them to me. They will Gladly bring you eggs for Buff's :).

Basiliks in Lava now drops eggs ,and lots of them
, around 50%+ drop rate are they usable in baking?. If so the egg issue is over. I collected 2 stacks in around 20 minutes.

Easy skill to raise.
Start making medium bowls.
The recipe is in the book.
Don't fire them, just destroy any successes.
Half an hour, you should be up to a skill of about 122. Easy.

Actually I would recommend making medium jars before medium bowls, you will have less failures, but again don't fire them. Before you are trivial on making jars or bowls you are trivial on firing them.

This may be a way. Otherwise read the guides here on Allakhazam. To me right now poison vials are interesting items, though I did not manage to sell them to rogues or sell vials of vicious mana to tailors. They will raise the skill to 148 ( not sure if that number is prepatch ), mine is 139 right now. The other interesting items are small deities, because they are to be carried in the range slot and just give some nice bit of AC or SV.

I am interested in this skill, mainly for making poison vials for the Viscous Mana I need, but Small Deities sounds interesting too. Does anyone have recipes for other interesting pottery items?
