Pottery

The potter can make vessels that can hold things and that are often used by other trades.

What are the best strategies on developing and using the pottery skill? What recipes are the most and least useful? Which classes are best suited to be potters? Which cities are best to practice your trade? Can you make a profit off of pottery, and if so how?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the pottery skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

I mean honestly...how is pottery ever going to benefit anything...honestly....

Pottery is a great skill...Enchanters, Rogues, Bakers, as well as anyone wanting a deity or idol will need a potter or the pottery skill. With my necro, I was able to get her pottery skill to 117 in just a couple hours. I was amazed at how quickly it went up compared to others I've tried.

other than the gate potion i have to agree this is a totally useless skill!!!

To a rogue, it is a very usefull skill and it's needed to make things in other skills.

Most likely you could use those for making cookie cutters. But that is only personal speculation.

Best place I found for my Dark Elf to master pottery is in Ogguk. The Dirtcarver sisters there have all you need to become a master potter.

Although I recomend Raul's site over EQ traders, you should check out both.

Having not seen eqtradeskills.com, I can't comment on it.
However, www.eqtraders.com is an EXCELLENT site. It really annoys me to read all these posts, when 80% of them can be answered by this one site. And 19% can be answered by the tradeskills section of eq.castersrealm.com.
questions about idols
# Aug 14 2001 at 12:09 AM Rating: Default
Currently my skill is at 148. Now the only thing that can up my skill according to eqtraders is poison vials of the various types. This is np, but they become trivial at 188.
Now if I'm understanding correctly Idols (which is of course what I'm really after) can't even begin to be made until 200, beccoming trivial sometime beyond that. So what can I make that will get my from my skill at 188 to 200?
Ideas?
Any of the facts I presented wrong?
Don't seem to be too many that have walked this path yet....if you have I'd really appreciate you impressing me with your experience and knowledge.

I'm an apt pupil, and I'm all ears.

RE: questions about idols
# Aug 23 2001 at 11:19 AM Rating: Default
the small wisdom dieties become trivial around your current skill lvl. so you can make those now. the imbued idols would be your only reason to continue skilling up unless you wish to sell poison vials to rogues ( which they would appreciate it :). once you reach your trivial with vials you can start with the imbued idols with a reasonable amount of success. check out the sites in the above post. they are very good. good luck.
Rogue Pottery
# Aug 13 2001 at 6:45 AM Rating: Decent
Right ok. This is for all you Rogues, so listen up. As i am a rogue and was very interested in the poison aspect of my prof. I decided to investigate the idea of making my own. This prolly had something to do with the fact that poison vials and the like, were 6pp+ Each. Geezzz. Any way here we go.

When you are leveling for xp in places such as Unrest Estate, North Ro through to South Ro. think of the future when you might want to take up pottery. Collect all available zombie skins, firstly they are stackable, secondly in these places they are as common Dark elves. Keep them in a safe place until you really want to persue this trade skill.

The quick way to do this is, if you are in South Ro and you think you have enough skins to set you on your way, then visit the Dark Elf merchants in South Ro, the one that sells the pottery stuff, And buy 40 medium jar sketches, 40 ceramic lining sketches and 80 to 100 Medium bowl sketches. Then find a place that sells all three sizes of clay.

The next step will take 2hours and 30 mins out of your time. If you work fast.

Buy a pottery book, from what i have heard is that if you have a pottery book on your character, its suposed to help with the skill, wether this is true or not, is anyones guess. But needless to say its good to refer to if you get stuck.

Ok. Start with the Medium Jar sketches, follow the method for the Medium Jar, you will need water, in all case(but not summoned). This is inportant, DO NOT buy any firing sheets. For a start, they take a big bite out of your money, and it becomes trivial to fire an item well before it becomes trivial in making the item.

Medium Jar become trivial at about 25 to 30.

Then follow the steps for Ceramic lining, water is again used in all cases. this should raise you skill to about 40 to 50 as soon as it becomes trivial, or you run out of materials, then move to next step.

Then medium bowl. as above follow the steps in all cases. this becomes trival at 100+ just keep going until you run out of materials.

And as i said before DO NOT buy any firing sheets, cos they cost money. any and all unfired items you make just drop to the ground or destroy.

As soon as you become a master potter, which took me 2 hours and 30mins, you can then consentrate on making poison vials, this is where you need the skins, make as many as you can and fire later.

It cost about a couple of gold to make 1 vial, seems fair to say, that this is very much so cheaper, than buying from a vendor.
RE: Rogue Pottery
# Sep 24 2002 at 12:29 AM Rating: Decent
I also disagree on something. The price. If making a regular poison vial i have no problem with the figures but try making lined or sealed the cost then is well near 2 platinum per vial.

The sealed sketch alone costs me 1p 8g and some change and even if each vial were made with zombie skins harvested by yourself the time and effort involved is considerable.

A regular poison vial sells for about 1p the lined and sealed ones are going for between 2 and 4p right now on Karana Server and I am pissed that ppl are selling so cheaply. These lined and sealed vials are worth at east 5p each.

If you would like to argue the point then it is obvious you have never made either of them yet. The sealed is easy to make but costly. The lined is cheaper but much harder to make. Think Not?

In order to make the lined you have to make the ceramic lining first then you combine that to make the lined a real pain.
RE: Rogue Pottery
# Sep 08 2001 at 5:27 AM Rating: Decent
The only thing I disagree with, is the comment to not buy firing sheets. When you make an unfired container it is worthless, but when it is fired it sells for 6-8silver. The firing sheets only cost a couple of silver, and although the profit then is only a few silver, it helps offset the cost somewhat. Especially if you're talking about wasting 60-80 containers.

GET SKILL TO 122
# Jul 30 2001 at 2:08 PM Rating: Default
to get your skill to 122 in a jiffie, if u´re a dark elf, since as far as i know , it´s the most comfortable place to do it, since the vendor is 10 feet from the wheel and kiln.
have somone buy you 40-50 medium jar sketches in nfp, the store on your left when u exit the bank, and 180-200 sketches of medium bowl.
total cost will be about 6 pp.
head back to neriak, into commons, and the ogre lady that stands at the bar left of the fort sell clay, in the bar up the little path there , down at the lower floor is a human that sells water flasks (he is turning away from u when u get down there).
k now u have all u need to skill to 122

just put 1 water flask, 1 block of clay, 1 medium jar sketch in the wheel and combine. do this until it´s trivial, (skill 36) and when u succeed , destroy what u get, u don´t want to fire it, since fireing sheets costs alot compared to what u wanna spend on this.

when trivial sell your sketches for jar , and move to medium bowl, same routine, 1 flask of water, 1 block of clay , 1 medium bowl sketch and combine. again destroy the item if u succeed.

this will take u to skill 122 in about 25 minutes.

remember to hold down ctrl when u click on a stack to pick one from it , saves loads of time.

this will cost u about 25-30 pp.

after this start collecting zombie skin, light weight, and cheap, check stores for it , most ppl sell them to stores so u can find loads of it with some vendors.

when u have loads of zombie skins , u´ll need a few hundred, go back to mr.ogre lady and boy a few stacks of poison vial sketches, this will cost a bit , also buy SMALL block of clay and more water flasks, combine on wheel and keep the item if u succeed. buy hq firing sheet (might be just a quality one, don´t remember) and combine in kiln, this will make u a poison vial. these u can sell to various ppl.
this will get u to 148 skill

next move on to lined poison vial, same thing but sketches are more expensive. that will get u to 168. estimated cost to get from 122 to 168 is something i´m not willing to guess on but to 122 it´s about 25-30 pp.

enjoy.

Does anyone have this kind of information for a half-elf? This is exactly what I was looking to find, except for a place where halfelven Rangers are welcome. Does Freeport have the vendors, kiln, and wheel? How about Kelethin or Thurgadin? Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Thurgadin is a great spot to do this, the pricing for low faction is offset by the fact that everything is within easy reach... I'm a Rogue though, so any merchant I need is indifferent. ;)Freeport is rough due to the fact that the merchants are all over the place, same with Kelethin (I hate Kelethin).

Later note: Got skill to 90ish in a couple of hours in Thurgadin. Did it all with Small Bowls (small block of clay, water, bowl sketch, cost is the same as any other starter item) and no skill points to start out with. 2 of the merhcants you need are in the bank next to the wheel. Whole thing probably cost me 30-40pp. Only drawback to Thurgadin is getting there at lower levels and the fact that a lot of higher level people (with a high level pottery skill) want to use the wheel. Still can't make poison vials though...
RE: GET SKILL TO 122
# Aug 13 2001 at 3:47 PM Rating: Decent
You can follow the steps as described but do them in North Freeport. Sketches are sold in the building immediately to the left of the bank as you exit the bank. Water is sold in the next building over and there is a wheel and kiln in a little grass area on the left just before you would leave the marketplace. You can purchase clay from a vendor in Groflah's Forge near the bard guild. You can also do the same in Kelethin, but there is a little more running around to do to gather all the items needed and get them back to the wheel and kiln.
Wheel and Kiln Locations
# Jul 30 2001 at 10:38 AM Rating: Decent
All,
I've decided to start Pottery. My number one challenge, tho, has been in best location to do it. Try as I might, I cannot find a good reference for where wheels and kilns are located (not just what city, but where in the city), as well as which wheels/kilns are located close to vendors who sell enough ingrediants to go to master. Any help? Thanks.

why to do pottery
# Jul 06 2001 at 9:13 AM Rating: Decent
I thought I would help those wondering as to why to do pottery. First off, it levels up super fast; below skill of 100 I never went more than three tries without a lvl. Second, its cheap; I killed madmen in the deserts and oasis to get water and went to skill of 130 with 30pp i think. Lastly, its useful for many others; I have a skill of 168 and can make any cooking untensil (skewers, pots, smokers, cookie cutters, muffin tins, cake rounds, jars, mixing bowls, bowls, pie tins), I can make Wisdom dieties for my clr and dru friends and guildmates, I can make poison vials for rogues or monks doing the Wu armor, and as an ENC for my mana potion spells, or enchant clay spell.
