Dual Wielding Myth Buster

Ok, I have seen the statements made where you have to have your fastest weapon in your main hand in order to get faster skill raises. This is nothing but a myth. The same goes for DPS damage. Again a myth. Let's take the following example into consideration, along with a little math.

Let's say that your main hand is a positive attribute, while your offhand is a negative attribute. Now, let's get a fast and a slower weapon.
Battle axe with a delay of 32, and a longsword with a delay of 28. Some people on here seem to think that the longsword will go in your main hand since it's the faster of the two. This is a commonly made mistake when dual wielding. Now then, a little math:

The two weapons have a difference of 4 points between the two of them. As stated above, if you place the axe in the main hand and the longsword in the off hand, that result is a +4 chance for dual wield skillups. Now then, if you reverse the pair, then the result becomes a -4 resulting in a decreased chance for the skillups. You may be hitting more often with the longsword in the main hand, but your not doing more damage. Meanwhile, the better of the two weapons is sitting there and waiting for a chance to hit. With that -4 offset, it doesn't allow for to many hits to happen. Now, with the weapons placed with your axe in the main slot, and the sword in the secondary, that becomes a +4, resulting in a much higher chance for skillups, damage, and if your weapon has it, procs.

The end result? Your better off putting your faster weapon in your offhand than in your main hand. Wether your DPSing for a group or running solo, you will find that this works more to your advantage than your detriment.

Some interesting thoughts on this topic in this official board thread from 2012

Assuming both of the weapons you are using are equivalent ratio, you will want to put the faster (lower delay) weapon in your primary slot. You want to do this because a significant portion of your sustained dps comes from actions which only occur from the primary attack and not from the secondary. So the more often that your primary attack goes off the more often that those additional actions can take place. Thus why you always want the faster weapon in your primary from a dps perspective. From an agro perspective with regard to melee it is the number of hits rather than the amount of damage, so again, you want he faster weapon in your primary hand because it will result in more attack attempts total.

As far as skill ups for dual wield, I honestly do not remember which it runs the check off of, but I've always figured that it went off whatever the secondary was since that attacks separate from primary.

Firstly it is duAl wield with an 'A', not duEl wield.
Dual meaning two.....Duel meaning combat between 2 opponents....sheesh this was covered in EQ-101 ten years ago. Learn your language people (peeple for the idiots). KEeee-reist U yanks are dumb (thats dummm with a B). feel free to flame but you are VERY stupid. smartest thing you have done in 30 years was vote in Clinton & Obama (Lovers NOT fighters)

THIS IS A RANGERS VIEW
OK use the fastest weapon in your PRIMARY for agro, no question about that. If you need to get ability raised use primary with the style you wish to advance ( I got my piercing up pretty damn quick by sacrificing my 1HB / 1HS in the primary....level 40ish when I started).
I truly believe that weapon speed affects the skill advancement...2HS does not level equally to dual wield...which I think is spread between the weapon type when you dual wield.
For example...I will put the slower weapon in my primary hand once I level to gain skill quickly. After that its DPS because I solo or keep agro.

Sorry to tell you this, but your incorrect as to where to put your weapons for aggro generation, and skillup speed. Look at my recent post to see where you went wrong.
Does delay in off hand matter?
# Oct 09 2008 at 10:14 AM Rating: Decent
Any clue how the frequency of attacking with the off hand is affected by the delay of the weapons held? In other words does the delay of the off hand weapon matter like it does with the primary or should I just find a weapon with a high damage and not worry about the delay?

All of your tank types (WAR/SK/PAL) as well as your Melee DPS types (ROG, MNK, BST, RNG) get this. As do (as already mentioned) Mage pets.

Does the secondary weapon u use in dual skill up? (like if i had a harpoon would my piercine skill go up?)
RE: does the second weapon...
# May 11 2005 at 3:46 PM Rating: Decent
Absolutely =) It's a great way to learn both skills at once; a side note that using weapons of the same skill in both hands is just as effective (you will gain skill ups off BOTH weapons!). Veru useful.
Beastlords

Beastlords get duel wield at 17. No need to create a hot key.

Would I be correct in assuming that Dual Wield is a passive ability? That is, there is no need to create a hot button, in that it applies itself?

I'm not sure of your question? However once trained all that is required is that you equip the primary and secondary slot with dissimilar (i.e. not exactly the same) weapons and you're off and running. Feedback will immediately let you know you are in 'dual wield' mode.
