Brewing

Brewers are the popular purveyers of potables ranging from beer to wine to vodka.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the brewing skill? Which recipes are the best, and which are the worst? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade? Can you make a profit from brewing, and if so how?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the brewing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Best route is Nighttime Spirits

Nighttime Spirits has a trivial of 475 and the components are easy to get. Barley, Bottle, Cork and Water Flasks are dirt cheap and available from multiple merchants. Each combine requires 2 portions of Dream Dust, and while that is not available from game merchants, it is a common loot drop which is almost always available relatively cheaply and in quantity from the Bazaar because Dream Dust is needed for hundreds of tradeskill recipes many of which are still in-demand among players.

Buy some stacks of each component, including Dream Dust (sells for 90-100pp apiece on my server, but easily pharmed if you have the time). Then, If you can stand to invest some RL cash in levelling your brewery skill, buy the 2-hour no-loss potion from the Station Marketplace. One nice thing about this is that you cannot LOSE any of your components, including expensive and hard-to-locate non-vendor components. But a second very useful benefit is that since NONE of the components are wasted even on a failure, you don't need to go to the trouble of replacing them in the brew barrel. When you have recipes requiring 5 or more components that saves a LOT of time.

You can get a skill up even at low skill levels when doing a combine even with a trivial of 475. The usual reason this is not a good strat is because recipes with trivs as high as 475 usually have a lot of rare, valuable components which would be lost every time you fail. But with the no-loss potion active, you don't bear that risk. To be honest when using this strategy I PREFER TO SEE FAILURES because YOU CAN STILL EARN A SKILL-UP ON A FAILURE and A FAILURE NEEDS NO CONSUMPTION OF SCARCE COMPONENTS as well as NO NEED TO RESTOCK THE TRADESKILL CONTAINER! You could probably start this as level 1 brewery skill but I suspect skillups are real few and far between when a level 1 brewer is trying a level 475 recipe. Might be better to get at least up to the high-100s using recipes with sub-200 trivials, of which there are many that can be made cheaply, some with all store-bought ingredients (like CLEAR ABSINTHE.)

I got my brewery skill up from 161 to 300 in 2 hours using this technique. Cost me about 10k in Dream Dusts. What I really want to make are the FD drinks which require using PLANAR SHARDS which are much costlier and scarcer than Dream Dust. Now I can make them with considerably lesser chance of failure, thanks to my stacks full of Nighttime Spirits!

From 200 to 300, you can purchase all the ingredients to make Clear Absinthe in POK (fennel, anise, grande wormwood - from the Barbarian traders O'Danos + bottle & water flask right opposite the brew barrel) then go to OceanGreen Hills invis and gather Corn Rose down near OceanGreen Village zone line - ground spawn, stacks 20. Brew Rose Absinthe by combining Corn Rose w/ Clear Absinthe (trivial 300). Very cheap, very effective. Oh, and don't drink Rose Absinthe - < 800 alcohol tolerance it's an instant drunk and takes a long while to sober up. On the plus side, your mana comes back at 20 per tick, but you're not going to be able to cast squat with all the lurching around you're doing.

Or any brewing for that matter... I have a lvl 51 chanter with a brewing skill of 255 from making Kaladim's Constitutional. I can't seem to get it higher even though Kaladim's Constitutional yeilds a skill level of 335. Does anyone know about lvl caps? Do I need to level up past lvl 51 so I can continue my brewing? I have no trouble making the drink but after many many combines... no skill up... Thanks!

How do you dye a piece of armor? I have a halfling druid with a 185 foraging and 172 brewing. I know how to make dyes, but I still look like a rainbow. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and how many dyes do I need for a piece of armor?

RE: How do you dye armor?
# Nov 30 2004 at 12:24 PM Rating: Excellent
Greetings,

You need one Vial of Prismatic Dye per slot that you wish to dye. You do also need the Legacy of Ykesha expansion, unless they have changed that recently.

Open up your inventory and there should be a 'Dye armor' button in there somewhere - along the bottom, I think. Click on this - select the slot you wish to dye and then mess about with the RGB sliders or values to get the colour you want. Save the dye when you're happy and the slot will be dyed that colour permanently. To return normal colouring to the item in the slot, bye another vial of dye and set all values to 255.

Hope this helps, and sorry for the delay in replying!

How exactly do u brew?
RE: how do u brew?

Greetings,

You need to get some ingredients (starting off with fishing grubs and water flasks is a good idea - these make fetid essence and will get you to 122 skill), then find a brew barrel - these look like home-made stills and are dotted about most starting cities as well as a lot of other places. The vast majority are marked on the in-game maps (hit backspace to bring it up) if you have them available.

Left-click on the barrel, and it opens up - click on the search button, and a whole list of recipes will appear, applicable to your skill level. Type 'Fetid' in the search line and search again, to narrow your choice, and you'll see the recipe appear on its own. Left-click it, and what is required to make it will appear in the slots of the container. If the background to the item in the slot is green, you've got some in your inventory - red, you haven't. Click on the 'Combine' button to make some of what you've selected, 'Autoinventory' to drop it into an empty inventory slot.

That's the basics - you'll find your recipe list increases as your skill does, but that some recipes need to be combined correctly using the 'Experiment' function before they appear on the list.

Check out EQ Traders for all your tradeskill needs, or the trade skill search function here on Alla's.

Hope this helps!
New Illussion Casting Brews

[Red][/Red]I've heard this rumor that there is this new brew out there that is made from the dropped blood of certain creatures (i.e. human blood, woodelf blood, dwarf blood.) And that when this brew is drank, it cast on the drinker the illussion of the creature whose blood was used to make it. (i.e. human blood drink turns you into a human.)
Has anyone else heard of this rumor? Is it true? If so, what's the recipe?
thanks in advance.
best class
# Aug 23 2003 at 1:05 PM Rating: Excellent
Wouldn't everyone say that the best class for this would probably have to be a foraging class? I mean there are 3 things you can get from it. Pods of water for water flasks, Berries, and Fruits for the juices. I know this is just a few things but still it does help I know with my ranger when I started I was overjoyed to find I had most of the stuff I needed from foraging.
RE: best class
# Aug 24 2003 at 3:28 AM Rating: Excellent
Greetings,

You've spotted it! Foraging classes have a BIG advantage when it comes to both brewing and baking. A lot of the common items you forage (vegetables, fruit, berries, rabbit meat, etc) can be baked and/or brewed. A nice addition are the foraged items for the LoY ribbons - brew these for the dyes required, and even if you're not going to use them, you can sell them to a vendor for 7pp each - not bad money for low-level characters, for the cost of a water flask!

If these two skills interest you at all, it's worth looking at their listings at eqtraders.com. Even if you can't forage, there are a pile of items that drop from early on in your career that can be used as ingredients - rat/wolf/bear/snake meat, spider legs, rat ears, fire beetle eyes - to name but a few.

There are very quick ways to advance both brewing and baking, but if money is tight, then save what you forage and what your prey drops, then have a look at the recipe listing when you get back to town to see what you can do with them.

Hope this helps!

Fastest/Cheapest Method
# Jun 11 2003 at 9:05 PM Rating: Decent
The fastest and cheapest method I could find for skilling up brewing was:

Making Fetid Essence to 122
Then making Skull Ale to 151
The Mino Hero Brew to 248

Hope this helps

A friend found one and told me it is no drop with 4 giant slots and a combine button. is this for brewing?

Greetings,

This is given to you as part of the PoP 'Aid Grimel' quest:

It is effectively a portable brew barrel, but only has 4 slots, limiting its use somewhat.

Hope this helps!
recipes for Deep Cavern Bourbon and Garanita White Wine

I have a few Deep Cavern Bourbon's and Garanita White Wines that were given to me by other players. However, there are no recipes for either of these listed here or at EQ Traders. Does anyone know the recipe for either of these? Trying to learn the trade, and thought it would be neat to make these--if I knew how.
easy
# Dec 13 2002 at 3:33 AM Rating: Decent
One disadvantage of the usual recipies is that you need many ingredients, sometimes even those that donĀ“t stack. All that clicking and dragging is quite boring.
My tip here is to save up or buy fishing grubs (PoK) and combine with water to make fetid essence (trivial 122). After that go to Shadeweavers thicket and collect the fruits that spawn near the merchants. You can collect 10 each spawn cycle and combine with water to make Shar Vahl essence (trivial 187). That can also be sold at for over 1 gp with a nice profit.

I usually start right off at zero skill with heady kiolas, since everything is sold in the same room as the brew barrel, and they resell in the bazaar for an insane profit (1000% or so) very quickly.

You'll fail more than succeed at first, but will end up with a few stacks of heady kiolas, by the time it trivials. Ingredients are cheap, convenient, and finished product can make back your investment 10 times over, easily.

not sure on what kelanthor's guide says, but here is what i did. I went from 1 to 135 in two days. Start out makeing bog juice (or just spend the training points). Or you could make flasks of water if you are a forager, using 4 globes of water w/ a bottle. Then, when you hit 21, go to freeport and make Short Beer until it trivials. Then short ale, in the same fashion. After short ale, I moved on to Ol'Tuljims Fierce brew, which takes you to 135 cheaply. After that move to Rivervale, and make JumJum spiced beer. That can get expensive, but as far as i can tell its your cheapest option at this level. This will take you to 166. Then, you could either make Faydwer shakers to 188, or just jump right into Minotaur Hero's Brew.

Greetings,

That's pretty much the progression that the eqtraders guide uses, with the exception of the Jumjum beer.

If you're a foraging race/class, it's also worth checking the brewing recipes and saving anything that can be brewed (fruit, berries, vegetables, etc.) Brewing wine, vodka and Hulgarsh as well as what the guide advised helped me along the way and kept the costs down.

Anyway, back to the brew barrel - I'm getting thirsty!

I've been making Shar Vahl Essence lately. Triv's out at 187, real cheap to make. Just go into Shadeweaver's Thicket and collect all the Payala Fruit that spawns on the ground. In about 30 minutes time, you can get enough for at least 70 combines if you know where they all are. Then go into town and combine with one flask of water.
RE: what to make First
# Nov 13 2002 at 7:49 PM Rating: Excellent
Greetings,

The guide at www.eqtraders.com to getting going is still pretty valid - there are other choices now, but if you have the pp to spend on ingredients, you could do worse than to follow that.

Bog Juice will get you going to 21, then follow the guide's progression from there. It's what I did and I'm up to 191 now! *hic*
