Brewing

Brewers are the popular purveyers of potables ranging from beer to wine to vodka.

What are the best strategies for developing and using the brewing skill? Which recipes are the best, and which are the worst? Which cities are the best places to practice your trade? Can you make a profit from brewing, and if so how?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the brewing skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

oak tanin
# Dec 07 2000 at 3:09 AM Rating: Default
I tried to make oak tanin today. I got the two messages that I normally get when brewing:

'You can no longer advance your skill..' and
'You have created something new...'

But nothing appears. I am sure that 1 oak bark and 1 water flask is the correct recipie but it is still bugged.

Possibly could someone make a list of Non Combines (nudge Allakhazam)to be posted with good combines, so we all dont waste our time doing what others have tryed.

To start off :
oak bark + 1 flask water= nothing
sop bark + 1 flask water= nothing
sop bark + 1 flask water + bottle= nothing

I purshased the Mithril Tailoring book today. It gives the recipie for Oak Tanin as 1 oak bark and 1 flask of water. The book can be purshased from Merchant Gaeadin in Kelethin. He is on the platform at the top of the first lift. His loc is -120, -131.

I have a question though. Where do I get oak bark? I haven't been able to forage it and can't seem to find it sold (in Kelethin, anyway).

Oak bark can be foraged in Kithcor Forrest on Antonica and in the Warslik's Woods zone in Kunark. If you are correct on the recipe I hope they have fixed it in a recent patch. Anon posted on Nov 20th that that recipe did not work.

Good Effort on the Tries. I'm interested in Oak Tanning myself. Oak bark + 1 Flask of Water would have been my first guess. The only problem is that tempers need 3 components, usually. Try that.

I have been all over and currenty have a skill lvl of 167 in brewing (yup one more point til maxed out), and I have never seen any vendors who sell vodka. My advice would be to go to the tunnel in ec and auction for the veggies, I have had great sucess with this method.

Good Luck,

I am almost to skill lvl 168 and am wondering if anyone knows of a brew that will excell my skill further. I should reach 168 tonight ( I bought another 16 stacks of forraged veggies to work with) and was hoping someone new of another recipe beyond Bleeding Brains.

Thank you in advance....

Well, I finally was able to max out brewing, there are some ideas out there that there are 10-12 new recipes for the brewing skill.?.? I have found nothing solid to prove this...has anyone found any recipes that will advance us past 168? Again, thanks in advance.

There are some new recipes for post 168 skill. The main one that comes to mind is the Minotaur Hero's Brew which trivials over 200.

It is unfortunate but this site hasn't been updated for a good while. It is a shame because I like this site.

Anyway, the main two sites that have the recipes are members.home.net/vlaking/eqtrade/ which is good for printouts with full recipes, trivials, etc. as well as www.eqtraders.com which has good information but isn't really designed with printouts in mind. Personally, I prefer to just get a good printout so I can use the information while playing.

As to eggnog it appears that it might not have been in the game until the last patch. It is supposedly there now but the books with the recipes won't be added until a later patch.

2 packets of Kiola Sap (many booze-related vendors have these), 1 flask of water, and 1 bottle. You can actually look under the skills section on the main Allakhazam pages, and several of the brewing recipes are listed.

New Recipes...
# Oct 31 2000 at 1:53 PM Rating: Excellent
Other than the ones Allakhazam has posted, I've come across quite a few new brewing recipes out there:

Double Brewed Double Stout Dwarven Ale
-- 2 Dwarven Ale + 2 Short Beer + Cask, yield 2

Also of note are the new NON-potent potables; finally an alternative to milk and water!

Berry Juice
-- 2 Berries + 1 Water Flask, yield 5

Fruit Juice
-- 2 Fruit + 1 Water Flask, yield 5

Karana Brown Tea
-- 2 Tea Leaves + 1 Water Flask, yield 5

Orange Juice
-- 2 Emerald Oranges + 1 Water Flask, yield 5

Rathe Berry Juice
-- 2 Rathe Berries + 1 Water Flask, yield 5

Sylvan Berry Juice
-- 2 Sylvan Berries + 1 Water Flask, yield 5

Malted Milk
-- Bottle of Milk + Malt + Bottle, yield 1

(all the above recipes were discovered on the excellent trade skill website EQ Compendium http://www.geocities.com/eq_compendium/ )

Unfortunately, unless you are a druid or ranger with a Master forage skill (or happen to be good friends with one), some of the items will be hard to come by:

Tea Leaves - rare forage in North Karana
Rathe Berries - rare forage in Lake Rathetear
Sylvan Berries - rare forage in Lesser Faydark
Emerald Orange - forage (unsure if rare or common) in Emerald Jungle

Some other undiscovered possibilities for all you druid/ranger forager/brewers out there (following the existing formulas):

Oak Bark Tea??
-- 2 Oak Bark (rare forage in Kithicor) + 1 Water Flask... ???

Cactus Juice??
-- 2 Cactus Pulp (rare forage in North Ro) + 1 Water Flask... ???

Carrot Juice??
-- 2 Miller Carrots (rare forage in West Karana) + 1 Water Flask... ???

Honey Berry Juice??
-- 2 Honey Berries (rare? forage in Dreadlands) + 1 Water Flask... ???

Just some ideas I wanted to throw out and see if anyone has thought to try them. I also want to see a recipe for Egg Nog!! I have tried several different combinations of Snake Eggs, Bottles of Milk, Spices, and Bottles to no avail... I want my Egg Nog!! hehehehe

See you guys later, now that I've use up all the board space =))

I'm a wood elf bard with a 75 int, 80 wis, and 90 cha. I want to take up brewing, as I think it's a fun trade skill and will help me get my alcohol tolerance up hehehe. I chose this character to take up brewing rather than my mage because as a wood elf I get forage (fruit berries and veggies), and as a bard I get a charisma bonus. (My mage is a gnome, her charisma sucks). I've invested a little bit of time and money already doing the bog juice dance to my current skill level of 21. It hasn't been easy. Do you think I should continue? Or are my stats entirely too low to effectively raise my skill? Is there any hope at all for me??? Bwaaaaahhh....

hehe

Still, it is taking a heckuva long time to raise skill =( Do you think I could reasonably start making Heady Kiolas to sell now, or should I continue with Fish Wine for a few more skill points? (Kiola Sap is SO expensive!)

Actually at your level I was making Ale to 68, then Fierce Brew to 135. But I'm a dwarf. If you can get foraged ingredients by all means use other recipes to raise your skill, as these two are money pits. And no, your stats are fine, just get an INT item or two (I hold a Stein of Moggok while brewing) to boost a little and you're good.

BTW, unless you know a few tailors, making Heady Kiolas is generally a waste of money. You can make good money off tempers these days though.
Temper Sale Prices
# Oct 29 2000 at 11:06 PM Rating: Default
What do you think a reasonable price would be to sell tempers at. Some of them require you to kill a 35+ mob to get one of the items. Take for example frost temper. You need 2 kill at least 2 Ice gaints for that. I have already created 2 blood tempers. Im just curious at what price i should be selling them at.

Brewwing cheap water usable in trade skills!
# Oct 26 2000 at 1:41 AM Rating: Default
If you have the forrage skill you can now make water flasks using 2 pods of water and a bottle. the bottles are only 6cp each. For Druid and Ranger brewers this is way cheaper than buying a flask of water for 1sp 1cp.

Its great to use with 2 berries and make juice. Ya had 4 pods of water and now have 5 flasks of berry juice. All for 6cp.

Tempers...
# Oct 24 2000 at 6:08 PM Rating: Default
I've just started playing EQ, and I'm not a brewer so forgive these basic questions. I am however a ranger and I do forage a lot of the items everyone on this board seems to be talking about so...two quick questions.

In smithing what are the tempers used for (sample recipies or item named might help)?

And secondly what are some of the more common items that I probably forage that would help brewers out?

(I'm a fletcher myself so all this is a bit unfamiliar).

Thanks for any input..
RE: Tempers...
# Mar 09 2001 at 11:21 AM Rating: Decent
Tempers are used in Culteral types of Armor. For example, humans blacksmiths can make Imbued Field Plate and Seafarer's Armor items but they all call for Sea Temper as an ingredient. I am a human-smith trying my best to skill up enought to make these awesome armors. The problem is figuring out what skill level of brewer I need to be in order to make these tempers. Hope this helps some,

That's what I did, as a high elf wizard unable to Forage, I just did the Ol' Tujim's bit until 135, then the double brewed dwarven ale bit until 142, then finally auctioning around for foraged veggies for the latter skill points. -- Vashanti

RE: Dwarven Ale?
# Oct 30 2000 at 3:39 AM Rating: Default
as far as I know there is no such recipe. However, being a non-forager I also did the double brewed dwarven ale from 135-142. I simply bought the dwarven ale from a vendor since there was no recipe and bought the short beers (lazy) and went to town till I hit 142, then began the laborious process of auctioning for vegetables until I hit 168. Finally maxed my brewing last Thursday, cheer!

If you're a druid or know one that throws out fruit and berries, Ask for them. 1 Fruit + 1 Flask of Water = 5 flasks of fruit juice.

Talk about a savings!
