Baking Skill

I am wanting to increase my skill, and become a succesful master baker in the shortest amount of time possible. I have a few idea's and I was wondering if some of you could give me your thoughts and suggestions on them. First of all, to increase a skill quickly you need a high Int, correct? And, to be succesfull in creating an item, you need a high Wis. So you need to have a character that has both a high Wis and Int, Possibly and Erudite Cleric. I've heard that the best way to then increase your skill is to make 'batwing crunchies'(batwing + frosting), then 'fish fillets'(fish + jug of sauce), and finally 'fish rolls'(batwing + fish). I know where to get fish and batwings, but where can I find a ready and cheap supply of frosting and jugs of sauce? Lastly I've heard that a spit works better than the oven, mostly because you can carry it with you anywhere. Does it work for all recipes, and is it really worth it? Thanks for the help.

Greetings, fellow baker. You must have read the summary on Raul Quanilesti's skill page, that's where I got the strategy that you describe above (batwing crunchies, fish fillets, and fish rolls) and it does work admirably, will get you to 135 skill rather quickly, although then you have to spend hours harvesting snake eggs to get to 142 (ugh).

I'm presuming that you're going to skill up in Freeport, since it's the easiest and handiest location to work on tradeskills. just outside W. Freeport in East Commons, go to the first inn. there's a small building to the side of the inn; inside is a merchant that sells garnish, spices, milk, jug of sauce, frosting, and cookbooks. If you're not going to be doing this in Freeport I suggest visiting EQcastersrealm.com and hitting their skills section; it has a full listing of merchants in Norrath who sell supplies for the various trade skills.

The character I did this with was a High elf Cleric with a 190 Wisdom and 103 intelligence, and the skill proceeded quite nicely, was a master baker within a few hours.

Definately pick up a spit! It's possible you may need a regular oven to make wedding cakes and such, (one of the few recipes I have'nt tried yet) but the spit will work for all the recipes you need to skill up with, and you are'nt tied down to a location with an oven. Also, an added bonus (for a caster) is you can do away with the lag when dragging items from backpack to spit by meditating; close yourself off from distractions that can slow up the dragging process. Also, if using a caster bind yourself near the merchant that sells baking supplies, then gate back once you buy your batwings/fish from the other merchant to save time.

Hope this helps you and other aspiring young bakers out there. Have fun, and may Tunare guide your hand in battle.

Mixing Bowl Loc on Faydwer?

Pardon all,

Might anyone know where on the continent of Faydwer if there is a vendor selling mixing bowls? If so, where might I find such a person (really want to start making cookies, but I'm stuck).

Thanks very much!

If you are bored of medding all the time instead of falling asleep at the key board try this. Get a couple fishing poles (because no matter how good your skill is they still break once in a while), a spit and either batwings or jugs of spices. I head out to a hunting ground near a body of water and while I med I fish. After I got through all my bait I start to cook. 1 fish and 1 jug of sauce. You can get your baking up to 125 (with the batwing recipe) at very little cost. Bait is about 3-4cps and batwings and sauces are about 1sp. With a high enough charisma a stack of fish fillets sell for over a plat and you have an endless suply of food. I do it mostly to pass the time but it seems like a great way to increase a couple of skills when you would be doing nothing otherwise.

What is the difference between an iron ration and a ration?
# Oct 06 2000 at 7:43 AM Rating: Decent
Or any other food for that matter...besides being fun and different, is there actually any other benefit to baking your own foods and buying iron rations over simple rations such as the time they last? I can't believe that the only benefit to having an iron ration over a norm one is just the .2 or so the iron is lighter.

The only diferences between any 2 foods in EQ are a)weight, and b)cost. There is no difference in how long they last. Baking is done soley for fun/RP purposes. Nothing better than giving Blackend Tier'Dal to a hungry Dark Elf.
RE: What is the difference between an iron ration and a rati

I agree with anonymous, that the food lasts longer...

but everyone here is forgetting that, as a trade skill, this can also be profitable. at skill 50, you can make fish fillets at about 50% efficiency, and they yield 1gp+ profit per success (cost: 1sp for sauce, 4sp for fish, or fish it yourself like i do :).

Chain-cook 60 of these at a time, and u can make upwards of 3plat at skill 70... which can be attained at lvl 1.

Affordable spells anyone?

Not true. There are 3 factors to food. 1. Weight 2. Cost 3. How long they last. If you don't believe me buy 20 rations do a /played and write down the time, then when you run out do it again with bread, rations last about 4 times as long. That is the main reason for cooking skill for most (i just think it's fun =P ). Edible goo (fire beetle eye + rat ears) lasts longer then bread! plus I have yet to create a food that weighs more then .1
RE: What is the difference between an iron ration and a rati
# Oct 24 2000 at 9:12 PM Rating: Good
actually that's very much untrue. all food lasts the same exact time so long as you're in the same zone. different zones make food/water go at different rates. but rather than going by a stopwatch (which is VERY inaccurate since server time is inconsistent), instead put 20 of any type of food with 20 water. in most zones, both will disappear at the exact same rate, regardless of the type of food you use.
Differences and such
# Nov 01 2000 at 1:25 AM Rating: Default
Hmm... yeah, Oasis and the desert areas make you consume water faster, but not food. And I thought I read somewhere that you race is a factor on how fast you consume food (Halflings consuming food faster).

Well, I agree as far as testing food types to see if any will last longer. Best results would be if you stuck to the same zone the whole time for both types of food.

I do know that most of the time food and water are consumed at the same rate. So I guess another interesting question would be to ask whether the liquid consumption rate is affected by the food consumption rate, or vice versa even.

As I had started cooking myself, and wanted to know I did this test once while sitting in
the oasis. I was AFk the whole time sitting on P2 and I recorded how long food lasted
for 4 or 5 pieces of each food while sitting still in the same zone.

Incidentally, you consume water 2X the rate of food in the oasis.

My findings were that: rations, iron rations, chunks of meat, beer-braised gator, and bread were all consumed at exactly the same rate.

Frosting is NOT available in Rivervale BUT it is available in Misty Thicket. Frosting can be bought from Bim Buskin at /loc 905, -2344 in a halfling hole to the right coming out of Rivervale, he's the only one that has a halfling hole rather distant from the rest of the merchants. If you're a big race (barb, ogre, troll) don't expect to be able to buy from him. High Elves will have to duck walk into the doorway and get stuck then shimmy a little to get in.

make 4 tonight. Recipe is over on allakhazams under skills (new).

Oh, an about eggs, you can buy nearly unlimited quantities in newbie areas from the vendor. I bought like 250 from boomba the big. Have your slots full and like a large sewing kit in the first slot. open vendor, buy stackalbe cheap junk (not his main stuff, stuff you know people sold him below) when you've bought out that slot ( you will eventually whether orc pawn scalps or whatever combine the sewing kit (can do while still in window) to destroy that stuff.

Now, sell the vendor the one item you are looking for like a snake egg or a bone chip or whatever. If it fills that empty slot, buy it back, the vendor has no more. If the slot stays empty, he has more. So now you know he has what you are after. get out of vendor screen and reright click him to refresh and a new item you could not see before has taken the empty spot. Keep buying out the stackables and combining them and rechecking to see what fills. I usually do 2 or 3 spots at once then refresh. Once cheap stackables are done Ill start buying the one gold or so items like cloth armor out and destroying them while doing it too.

I was doing this to mainly get bone chips, got about 250 snake eggs also which I stuck in a pack instead of destroying. I figured what the heck and read some baking info, maxxed backing to 135 via batwings and fish or something, went to gfay and lesser fay and killed some brownies, made 4 wedding cakes. whee.

There are (relatively) low level Brownies called 'Brownie Scouts' (I believe), in Greater Faydark. The are much lower level then the Brownies in Lesser Faydark, the downside, is that they appear to be a random spawn, so unless you have Tracking, they are very hard to run across. I'm a High Elf, and in over a year of playing, I remember running into only two. If you, or a friend has tracking, however, this would be your best option. They do drop Brownie Parts, by the way, as one of the two I ran into, had them. Unfortunely for me, at the time, the receipes that needed it were unknown and I simply got rid of it.

Or pre-mixed dough? For that matter, How can I get my hands on some Brownie meat without having to carve it off the 40+level guards?
RE: Eggs! I need EGGS!

I should keep this to myself but.... If you go to Paineel, there are snakes there that will drop up to 3 eggs at a time. They also drop more often than snakes in other zones or so it seems. The other night I was there and got 80 eggs in less than 20 minutes along with a gob of bat wings for levitate and Fish Rolls. Since there were only 3 of us in the zone, the snakes and bats were plentiful! Check it out!

As far as the Brownie meat, beside the rare pop lower level brownie in Greater Fay, you got me stumped too! I have seen him once and killed him when he wasn't far from the Wizzie spires on the path to Butcherblock. He did drop brownie parts!

Saddly, there is no vendor that sells unlimited supplies of eggs. Your only choices are a)kill the snakes yourself, b) try to buy them from epople who ARE killing snakes (but most won't bother with them), and c) hope to find them on vendors.

Pre-mixed dough - nope, gotta make it yourself.

Brownie meat - gotta kill brownies (or find some who IS killing brownies to buy it from).

It sucks, but that is the price one pays to become a master baker.

The best place to get eggs is the paineel Newbie Area. As a 35 druid supposedly Kos to them...esp since I keep killing their necro at the docks. the green newbie guards didn't bother me there until I accidently area effected too close to them once. The snakes there sometimes drop more then one egg at once. If you are a medium to high level bard, you would get a lot more eggs and much faster then I.

Ok, ready for this? Foragers make good high lvl cooks! Surprise!

Most foragers are rangers/druids

Most of the above are wood elves/half elves in Kelethin.

Ok, with that narrowed down, on to the point of this topic:

How you can become a good baker and never leave the continent.

(1)

to start with, a lone point in baking, or none if u want. You REALLY don't need to waste money here.

Go out and smack rats or wolves silly (your choice) and pack in their meat. No matter how much I auction, i never get any large amount offered to sell to me, so i do it the old fashioned way :)

Go buy bread.

Combine 1 bread and 1 animal-meat-of-your-choice in oven. Hit combine. BAM! a sandwich! (even at skill 0 I has a 33% success rate. not bad).

wolf sandwich (my choice) sold for 3.5 sp. Bread costs 1.7 sp. profit for you lowbies? after you get to about skill 10, yes.

(2)

when trivial, go to batwing crunchies. there is a vendor in BB and one in Stteamfont that will sell frosting.

Bats are EVERYWHERE. find them, smack them. they avg drop 1 wing apiece (some drop none, some drop 2)

find oven. combine one of each. BAM! a tasty treat.

(3)

the fish fillet every mentions is good to put in here. If you start making these at 46 (the batwing trivial point) rather than at the beginning though, you will succeed far more, and not lose as much $$.

(4)

I've heard fish rolls work (fish + batwing).

(5)

After you pass 100 (which fish rolls will take you WAY beyond), you'll be able to start using your veggies, rabbits, and everything else in earnest. just carry a spit, some sauces/spices (depending on which type of food u will use, see any advanced baking guide), and your foraged food, and u can make some good, hearty vegtable soup, or rabbit stew. Or if you are feeling real obnoxious, give the halfling druid in your group some hot 'n spicy Toelings... Whatever. By now you are a master, and can make whatever delicacy u want. Just beware... for those after dinner sweets, you are going to need brownie parts. If you are a mid-lvl, they will be hard to get. If you are a high lvl, and can solo the LFay brownies... then all you need is to track them down :).

Good eatin!

P.S. for the (4) section, there is also the option to go into cookies to get you to around 100. Although the success rate is high at the 80-100 skill range for them, it's MUCH faster skill-wise to skip this part, and do the fish rools instead.

-Drawmjil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do you want to Bake? Well, there are a couple of answers to that. First of all, it's great fun to give new and exotic dishes to friends, and believe me, giving 'Gnome Kabobs' to a gnome can produce a GREAT reaction. Second, it's a rather cheap skill to become master in. Third, it is defiantly needed for a quest in Grobb.

Ogres really are the worst race (except for trolls -Chernabog's remark) when it comes down to trade skills, they lack very much in both INT and WIS, the first important for skill advancement, the second for skill success. So you should really not aim for a jeweler career or some other expensive trade skill.

Drawmjil had his own VERY good reasons to start out his baking career, which you can read all about in his diary (Dates October 17 - 19). I will try to describe here how Drawmjil got from skill 0 to skill 103 in a very short time, with a very limited budget and NO hunting for ingredients.

First of all, get around 15 practicing points to spend on baking, you can spend less, but that will mean more time and more money. Collect around 15-20 platinum pieces. Do NOT think that you will have the patience of fishing your way up to master chef, this is tedious enough for an Ogres just to mix everything about a 1000 times.

Ok, what we are going to concentrate on here are TWO dishes. First one is fish fillet. You will be making these until you are at skill level 82. Drawmjil also got a friend to buy a spit (portable oven) in Freeport, which increases the speed, since you don't have to run all the way to an oven. Start by putting all practice points you have into baking (I recommend 15, but it could be more or less depending on how much you are willing to spend).

First go to Bup, he is located in The ferrot at loc 1171, 122. Buy as many Jug of Sauce as you can carry. Then go to Chef Dooga, she has an in in the same place as the warrior guild is located. There you can buy fresh fish. If you have a spit you can start making fish fillets right here, otherwise there is an oven next to Crunga & Erung in an unmarked shop down the hall from armor merchants. To make a fish fillet you put one jug of sauce and one fish in spit/oven and press combine. Believe me, you WILL fail often, especially in the beginning. A tip, hold down LEFT-CTRL when picking up a stacked fish/sauce, that will make you pick up ONLY ONE, so you don't have to bother with the slider. Well, you just do that over and over until you reach skill 82, then fish fillets will become trivial. Sell the fillets to merchants, Dooga or Bup depending on where you are at the moment (you will run between them allot).

Ok, you are now at skill 82, that might be enough for you, if not (Drawmjil wanted to be above 100 in skill), you should now move on to Fish rolls. Same procedure, but instead of sauce, you mix one fish and one batwing in spit/oven. You might think that this will take allot of bat bashing, but there is a person who sells unlimited batwings in Oggok (lucky us Ogres). His name is Hrak and he is in the second room in the mountain when going to the Shaman guild in Oggok. Just repeat the procedure above and produce fish rolls. Fish rolls are not as profitable as fish fillets, which is the reason for making fillets all the way up to 82. If you have allot of money you can do fish rolls all the way, since you wont have to zone as much buying ingredients. Fish rolls can take you as high as 132 which should be QUITE enough.

Well, that's it. Hope you can enjoy baking as much as I do, it really is fun, and now for the good part. The trolls have a quest called skeletons in the closet, which is to my knowledge the only quest in the game which requires cooking. What they need to complete the quest is something called a butchers apron. You get it by giving chef Dooga 10 gold and 3 pickled froglocks (1 froglock meat + 1 vinegar + 1 jug of sauce). The apron itself if a good newbie armor, and could be sold to troll shamans doing this quest.

Happy cooking,
Drawmjil

No more need to zone into Ogguk to see Chef Dooga. There is an ogre along the northeast shore of the river (very near Ogguk) named Kogg and he sells fresh fish in unlimited quantities. If you've got a spit then you can make it all the way to skill 82 without needing to zone.

Thanks for the LEFT-CTRL tip. By the way, the Paw of Opala quest requires cooking too, you need to make Rat Ear Pie to help get the container for the rings.
Sandwich King

Note this doesn't apply to Kunark as there don't seem to be any newbie areas with meat dropping animals.

Sandwiches are the easiest and cheapest ways to kick off your baking skill - less fustrating than constantly failing at fish fillets.

The easiest to make are Rat sandwiches (yum!) - they require 1 rat meat and 1 bread. They trivialise at 25 so you'll raise your skill without too many failures.

Next make wolf meat sandwiches which are trivial at 31. You can also use bear and lion meat for sandwiches but these are better left until a little later when you can use them for more adventurous recipes such as 'Beer braised Bear'!

Good luck.

Everyone needs charisma! If you are performing a trade skill that requires you to buy from or sell to a vendor then you NEED to get enough charisma gear to get your cha over 103. The cheapest charisma gear thats not too hard to get, where to get it, and probable prices with (pp/cha), are:

Mystic Doll, Feerrott, 3 cha, Free (0)
Medal of Merit, Qeynos, 5 cha, Free (0)
Silver Cats Eye Necklace, Jeweler, 3 cha, 1.5pp (.5)
Silk Evening Tunic, Qeynos, 5 cha, 5pp (1)
Crude Stein, Feerrott, 15 cha, 30pp (2)
Electrum Cats Eye Bracelet, Jeweler, 4 cha, 8pp (2)
Golden Cats Eye Bracelet, Jeweler, 7 cha, 26pp (4)
Splitpaw Tooth Necklace, SK/Paw, 5 cha, 25pp (5)
Opalline Earring, Unrest, 5 cha, 30pp (6)
Electrum Star Ruby Ring, Jeweler, 7 cha, 128pp (18)

That is more than enough gear to get anyone with a base charisma of 40 to 103 for optimal prices, so anyone can leave out the expensive or harder to get gear.
As an example of what this will do, if you fletch from 1 to 100 skill selling arrows back to the vendor, you will spend approximately DOUBLE the money at 60 charisma that you would at 103.

PS: If you are going to kill my karma, at least post a reply saying what you didnt like.

Is there really a recipe for a wedding cake out there or is it just rumor. I play on luclin and think it would be great to have a wedding cake at my upcoming wedding so any bakers, if it is possible, please sell me one or let me know how to make one.

Thanks

Yes, you supposedly can make wedding cake. I haven't tried this (yet) but here is what I was told....

White chocolate, clump of dough, frosting, cake round.

To make white chocolate: 2 frosting, brownie parts, spices

Put the cake in the oven after you make it to slice it into 10 pieces.
