Baking

You need to eat to live, and the baker is able to create his own food, both for personal consumption and to sell or give away to others.

What is the best way to develop and use the baking skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? Which cities are the best places for Bakers to practice their trade?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the baking skill, and read, rate and coment on those posted by others.

I found Jagged Pine had everything I needed to go from 0 - 250 since I could forge. I bought some of my baking items (fry pan, muffin tin, etc. in the bazaar, and others I made. The ones I bought was more out of time saving).

forage the whole time (and kill griffons) doing this for plant shoots, fruit, berries and vegtables (alt O, Keys, select an alt key for your forage hot button (like <- ) so when you turn left you forage).

noodles (triv 31) (save for latter) eggs from basiliks in cave near BB zone in. Apricot Marmalade (triv 99). Muffin or cup cakes (triv 135). Fruit Pie, berry pie, vegetable pie(triv 142), Vegetable Pasta (triv 191), Griffon stir fry (triv 244), Griffon melt (triv 275), cheesy griffon casserole (triv 284) If you have a collapsible spit, and your mixing bowl, pie tin, non-stick fry pan, etc. with you, you will never have to leave Jagged Pine (if you can forage). Bring some Clarity potions with you and you won't even need to go to POK for a C3 to help with skill ups.

I've been trying to make the Beer-Battered Cragbeast Soup. I made about 120 Beer Based Batter (95 trivial brewing) and broke down about 400 lbs of cragbeast and hynid meat in my mixing bowl. My problem is now i'm trying to mix the batter with the meat to make the beer-battered Cragbeast meat and Beer battered hynid meat and I get a message cannot combine....The recipe calls for combining it in a mixing bowl. Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong.....thank you in advance

Silly question, but when you 'broke' down your cragbeast meat ... did you put the *1lb cragbeast* meat BACK in the mixing bowl(single piece) and click combine again? This turns it into 'cragbeast meat' .. that should let you do your combine.

okay Iu ahve been baking like mad for months. I have finally gotten to the coveted 300 by making the misty thicket picnics which trivial at 335. after making over 5000 picnics after reaching skill 300, I am starting to wonder how to get past the 300 point.
is there some quest that the rest of us don't know about that will allow your skill to get past 300?

Greetings,

You can take one tradeskill all the way to 250, but this prevents the others passing 200. By spending AA points, you can then advance these to 250 also.

The max skill attainable in any tradeskill, even using a geerlok, trophy or other skill-boosting device, is 252. Note that for skills that are stuck at the 200 cap, using such items will give you the full bonus over 200 (so a geerlok will give you 210 effective skill).

The reason baking gets difficult after 191 is that up to that point (with the addition of one smithed item) you can skillup purely on vendor-bought items. Patty melts trivial out at 191, then you are down to hunting or shopping in the bazaar for at least some ingredients for further advancement.

Take a look at EQ Traders quick trivial list to give you an idea of what can be made to get you past 191.

Hope this helps.

RE: recipes

Greetings,

Some recipes will automatically appear on your usable list as your skill increases. Some will appear once you have made the combine successfully using the 'Experiment' mode on the container. Others will never appear - these are mainly quest recipes, which cannot be learned. Can't think of any baking ones offhand, however.

Hope this helps.

I am looking for the next item to bake at a 135 skill. I am hoping there is something whose combinations are easily acquired, preferably in PoK. All the recipes I have seen seem to require items not found in the PoK or other trade skills. Any insight into where I should go from here would be appreciated.[Black][/Black]

Greetings,

You're probably going to have to get yourself one or more baking utensils to proceed from 135 - not a bad investment, as you'll probably need them later.

You can fillet various sorts of meat to 143, or make batwing pies until 142. Filleting requires a filleting knife, pies need a pie tin.

You may want to just skip straight on to Patty Melts - they need cheese, meat (any of bear, lion or wolf - vendor sold in various towns), a loaf of bread and a non-stick frying pan. The latter (like all baking utensils) is player-crafted. The mold for it is sold only in Jaggedpine Forest, cheese is also available there as well as Abysmal Sea.

Even if you haven't done any smithing, making the various utensils will not take long - you could always do the smithing quest in Abysmal Sea and get 54 points for free! Smiley: grin

Check out the link below for more info on baking recipes:

Hope this helps.

Catnip is from the Cherries for Miranda Quest in SBM, it's a turn in, and she gives you catnip in return.

Cherries for Miranda

My Druid is a 250 baker with Spoon, getting from 190ish to 220ish is very hard, the skill ups come very few and far between, I have max wis and I make sure to get Shammy buffs before I do any combines, the added dex seems to help with skill ups, much like it helps with Proc's on a weapon.

Then again, the RNG is a cruel beast, I can go for hours without a skill up, and then get 4-5 in a row /shrug

Good Baking Plan?

I'd like to know if this is a good baking plan. Well I was thinking of starting with making fish rolls but with only a 22 skill at baking currently, fish rolls have a high failure rate. Also me being only lvl 30 I cannot have kei to help boost my Int so my skill up would go up faster. I think I'm going to start out with making bear sandwhiches, they trival at 31. Then at the same time while I'm collecting bear meat, I'll collect wolf meat so I can make beer braised wolf which trival at 68. After I'll make cookies which trival at 102. I'd like to know where I can get Frosting? It seems to be required in many recipies. Also, I found that collapsable split on sale in the bazaar for 1k on my server. I assume they are player made?

Greetings,

Your plan is pretty good, as a lot of stuff you kill will provide you with items you can use in baking.

However, for a guide to quick advancement in baking, at not too high a cost, check out:
http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=g19&menustr=040020000000

Also, if you head to www.eqtraders.com and click on the trade supplies link, you can then find any tradeskill vendor sold, or mob-dropped supply by either zone or skill. Frosting is sold in most starting cities somewhere, and plenty other locations besides.

Hope this helps!

I've succeeded in making clumps of dough - but what do I do with it? I can't seem to find any receipies for the basics. Can anyone direct me? When I try the batwing things, i'm told I don't have enought skill - how do I get enough by doing the other things?

tip plains of power there is a merch who sells pietins he's one of the Ironstove's, not Culken (who has the flour.

Greetings,

Take a trip to this link and see what you can make with your dough. Try and pick something within 20 or so points of your current skill, as your chance to succeed dramatically reduces the further your skill is from the item's trivial number.

http://www.eqtraders.com/search/reverse_recipe_search.php?item=1461&menustr=080020020000

The message that 'you do not have the skill to fashion these items together' is just the game's way of telling you that combination failed. Keep trying, or pick a combo closer to your skill level for more success. If everything on that list is a bit high for you, then look at:

http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=g19&menustr=040020000000

That will give you a fast way to skill up to 142.

Hope this helps!

I'm also new to baking, I'm making fish rolls. I printed out the entier baking:Oldword recipies from eqtraders. I've noticed that fish rolls can be made in a collasible split. I would like to know where can I find one and what that is? Thanks :) Btw I've found an endless supplies of bat wings in Qeynos Hills. More bats there than in Freeport from what I could tell.

This is what i found as im ;preparing my self with a 189 bakers skill for my lvl 55 Bard , and soon, ill be looking to the Grandmasters baker spoon soon, not yet though,.

Then after i got my low lvl chanters skill to 103 in jewlery, i found this.

Quote:
Artisan Seal (1) Pottery, 136 Trivial

o Small Block of Clay (1) Storebought

o High Quality Firing Sheet (1) Storebought

This is via EQ Rangers web sight. This is for the Grandmasters fletching knife. But they Both use the same Artisan Seal, sooooooo WHAT is going on. 1 says Triv at 102, the other says triv at 136. Is there a reliable source of info, its expensive not getting info right when your on the last stretch of a task like this. ANYONE know?

Thanks Everyone for Tip on Batwing Crunchies. I am starting a female Cleric and I went from 0 - 46 in 30 minutes.

Now on to Fish Rolls - I have all the material and hope to increase ability to 135 tonight

Whats next after the fish rolls? Looking for the easiest combination though money spent is a factor since I am only level 7.

Please advise

Pinemyer pasta triv @ 191, get eggs from forager in Gutka, buy 10 at a time from him. Buy eggs from players that forage them, remaining ingredients are vendor bought. very easy and inexpensive to gain skill.

Greetings,

Well, patty melts will get you to 191, but you'll need a friendly smith to make you a non-stick frying pan, and you'll need to get to Jaggedpine to buy the cheese for them.

You can get to 142 doing pies (batwing, beetle eye, berry, fruit, meat, vegetable, plus rat ear turnovers), but you'd again need a smith to make you a pie tin.

You could make the various fillets (bear, lion, mammoth, wolf) to 143, but once again you'd need a smith to make you a filleting knife.

There are other combos from Luclin, Velious, PoP and LoY, but as you're level 7, the ingredients might be out of your reach. The above are all 'old-world' recipes, and a lot of the ingredients you'll find on vendors. If you want to know more about learning baking, or any other trade for that matter, head over to:

I'm having trouble with my baking skill and need some advice. My baking skill is currently 197. With a KEI, my WIS is 231. I've made over 300 combines between Griffon Melts, Anaconda Melts and a few Candied Cockroaches. Most of my combines are successful, but no skill raise. Can anyone tell me what they were making to get past 197? Thanks all.

Greetings,

Not sure why you're not getting advances, although I've noticed the pace of such advances slows down as you approach the item's trivial level. However, as the melts are trivial at 247, they should still be pushing you along.

There are times for everyone when the RNG (random number generator) goes against you - I ended up doing 172 combinations to go from 192 to 193 brewing! Stick with it, all of a sudden you'll find you get 2 close together.

Hope this helps.

Easiest way to advance skill on baking is making fish rolls, ( 1 bat wing, 1 fresh fish ) they can be found in east free port and west free port or plane of knowledge. it maxes out at about 135 or so. you can combine them in a spit or in a oven.

Greetings,

Honey berries are used in brewing, actually, for one of the dyes (Berry dye, strangely enough!) used in Iksar tailoring for their racial robes. These were introduced for various races with the Legacy of Ykesha expansion.

Note that any race can brew the dyes (correct foraged item plus a flask of water, trivial 127) and make the ribbons for the robes. Only those races who can wear the robes can tailor them, though.

For a full listing of LoY-specific tradeskill combinations, plus all of the different dyes brewable see:

Quick way to raise your skill in baking

Baking is a very inexpensive and easy skill to master, at least in my experience. My current skill is at 135, and I have spent a very little amount of time improving my skill. First of all, if you are a caster with high wisdom or intelligence, then this process will be a lot easier. Nevertheless, I started with making batwing crunchies (1 frosting, 1 batwing, trivial at 46). Then, I made Fish fillets (1 jug of sauces, 1 fish, trivial at 82). After that, I made fish rolls (1 batwing, 1 fish, trivial at 135). Batwings are sold in ec in inn 2 or 3. They are sold by Katha Firespinner, an female Erudite. Fresh fish are sold at ports in Qeynos, Freeport, Neriak, Riverdale, etc. Everything else I listed are sold at baking merchants all around the world. Good luck to all of you!

Greetings,

If you are a smith (or know a friendly one), get yourself a non-stick frying pan. Pay a visit to Jaggedpine Forest and you can advance to 191 making patty melts (one of bear/lion/wolf meat, loaf of bread, cheese). All items (apart from the pan) store-bought, cheese only available in Jaggedpine.

Hope this helps!

After my efforts there were still others selling them for as low as 40p a stack. What's happening here?!

I have been working on baking and once you hit 191 it really slows down. What I have been doing is making sure I have all my wis gear on, getting a C3 and then baking Halaas pies. They sell well in bazaar and you can make your money back easily. But it is slow going let me tell you. I am only at about 197 now I think and I have successfully created about 300 pies. The nice thing about these is that you get a lot of multiple stacks on stuff and when you do your final combine a success gives you more than 1 pie (6 I think, have not baked in a while). Anyway I am not into doing the pixie thing because the Cinni sticks are a pain to get. Pies get old fast and have a lot of steps but you make back the money you use up and then some

good luck all

RE: Food
# Jan 14 2003 at 7:16 PM Rating: Good
Greetings,

Might be a couple of reasons for this. First is what I do. I'm a foraging class, and if I forage something worth eating (that I can't use to up my baking or brewing skills) down the hatch it goes!

The other reason is the stat foods now available. If you don't force-feed yourself one of these, you get the full benefit. If you then regularly force feed yourself any normal food, the stat benefits stay with you, and you avoid depleting your stack of stat food.

Hope this helps!

Greetings,

Baking is a pretty low-profit skill, all in all. Some higher-level foods, like Halas 10lb Meat Pies and Misty Thicket Picnics, sell well. I made a little bit of money making and selling fish rolls. You can buy the fish and batwings at vendors and make a stack for about 3-5gp, if memory serves. Pre-Bazaar days, I was selling a stack of these for at least 5pp each, and I think you might get more now.

Sorry I can't be more help, but Tailoring is my main profit-making skill now. Baking I use for low-weight, hi-nutrition food items.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone other than me noticed a distinct dropoff in skillups. I am currently at 190 skill and have been making Misty thicket picnics as both a means to skill up (i have a ton of foraged goodies) and make a little cash. However after 400+ combines(and thats a conservative estimate mind you) I recieved 3, yes 3, skill ups. if this is the rate that skill ups dwindle too i will be very disappointed. Wasn't there a patch a few weeks ago that was supposed to make it easier to skill up in all TS's besides pottery and fletching(which were to get slightly more difficult if memory serves)? I certainly hope this isn't what was intended. Can anyone tell me if this is the norm or if there is something very wrong. Honestly, I would be happy with a skill up per stack but at the rate i am going its a skill up per every 6 stacks of combines.

Greetings again,

Sorry about the delay, but other commitments delayed my planned tradeskilling day!

Anyway, I started yesterday with Baking at 142, and proceeded to skillup using patty melts (trivial at 191) as the ingredients are all store-bought. I have done 19 stacks of combinations and got my skill to 189. This works out at 1 skillup per 8 attempts on average. Not a great return on your time, and I'm sure it used to be better. There are also extended runs of no advances - the last 50 attempts brought no skill increase.

Not sure what this proves, other than tradeskills are (as they've always been) a time and money sink! However, I said I'd post my results, so here they are...

Hope this helps.

Greetings,

I haven't worked on my baking for a while, so can't really comment on that skill's difficulty - I may have a session this weekend to push it on to higher levels (currently at 142). If and when I do, I'll edit this with my skillup results.

However, I can vouch for the fact that the patch in question has made tailoring distinctly easier. I had a heck of a job getting to 158 on Wu's, but I've only done about a stack (at most) of acrylia studded combines, and I've had 5 skillups.

I know this isn't much help at the moment, but I will post some concrete results on baking once I've done a few combinations!

191 SKILL FAST

Anyone can go to 191 skill fast with all store bought items. If you cant buy from a certain vendor then have a friend buy for you or pay a newbie to buy for you, they need money anyway. First step buy batwings and fresh fish from the vendors in Jagged Pines. Combine 1 fresh fish and 1 bat wing in oven. This will take you to 135. Then you will need to buy a non stick frying pan from a pc, should be able to get one easily in the Bazaar for around 10pp. After this buy lion meet from Shadowhaven and then cheese and bread from Jagged Pines again. Put pan, meat, bread and cheese, one of each of course, in oven. This will produce patty melts and will take you all the way to 191.

Goodluck and happy baking!

An oven doesn't take up one of your inventory slots. If you do multiple tradeskills, you can't afford to run around with a bunch of 4/6/8 slot tradeskill containers, when you need 10 slot bags for space.

You'll find that for some of the higher level recipes, the amount of ingredients exceeds what you can put in a spit. Using an oven also saves having to lug the spit around with you!

But unless i can do better than one piece of meat in 30 minutes, this dish isn't going to be worth it. Does anyone know of a better spot for hunting snakes that yeild meat?

Snake meat can also be bought in a vendor in Shadow Heaven.

You may have found this out already, but snake meat can be bought in any quantity from Mordin, inside Mordin's Meats in Thurgadin.

He also sells bear, lion, gator, rat, and scorpion meat.

Greetings,

While they might be a bit below your level (but I'm not at your level yet, so I can only go on my own experience!), check out the chasm crawlers in East Karana and even the Giant Rattlesnakes in East Commons. Been a few levels since I hunted any of them, but egg drops were plentiful and meat was fairly regular.

Hope this helps!

Just the other day I was testing out some durations of different foods while working on my casting skills for my human enchanter. I have read eq traders web page and learned that snacks lasted about 15 minutes, meals 30 minutes ect. Now here is the interesting thing. I notice that my standard ration I was using lasted about 33 minutes and when I ran out I was eating chunks of meat and they lasted less than 20 minutes about 19 minutes but not sure. Note they were both listed as meals. Makes me wonder now if the listing snack, meal, heaty meal ect is only a range of durations. So a snack could be anywhere from 1 to 15 minutes and meals could be 16 to 30 minutes ect. Has anyone else noticed this? I did a quick search on everquest durations hoping to find a web page that listed different known foods with how long they lasted exactly. Do candied spider legs that are list as a snack like the muffins you buy from the store last longer? Any imput is welcomed.

Greetings,

According to this link at eqtraders.com:
http://www.eqtraders.com/location/baking.htm

rennet is available in Fungus Grove and Shadowhaven. (Open the link, click on Edit at the top left of the IE menus, then use the 'Find' option to give you the exact locations.)

Hope this helps!

Cheese can be found in JaggedPine, both in the Good village or the Gnoll Of Brell (apprehensively to everyone)...
