Maxxed

I have just maxed this skill and it is very worthwhile the compass never wanders and there is an arrow on my LoY maps that shows me where i am going ( instead of the crosshairs) what i did to max it is go into my options and change my macros so every time i pressed the left arrow key it would use my zero hotkey which just so happened to be sense heading =) with 255 int it was quickly maxed out hope this helps
SH = 200

As a caster, while yer medding, hit the key! Most casters are over 150 either Int or Wis, so use that ability! As a melee, use it while searching for mobs, put hotkey in numeral 2 key, and use "W" key for forward. A slip of the ring finger while using mid finger to hold w key down will get SH moving
almost useless

200 Sense Heading

Previously there was no real use for Sense Heading... especially to bother getting it all the way to 200.

Now with the compass, having 200 skill pegs the compass and it never wanders. Cool stuff.

Hot key
# Jul 09 2002 at 8:24 AM Rating: Excellent
Actually the key to setting the User defined hotkey is to set it to a left or right arrow. Since when your running foward you don't need to lift up your your finger what you should do is put it on a left or right button ... since you are always turning when running ... especially if being chased. I set mine at about lvl 10 and now have a sense heading of 120

Easier way to keep Sense Heading Maxed
# May 31 2002 at 5:35 PM Rating: Decent
I got so sick of keeping my sense heading level up that I got MMOGer. It runs while you are afk and maxes many of the skills that you have to keep doing the same thing over and over for. It is cheap and works pretty good. It was at mmoger.com I think. Works good for beg, forage, fishing, and many other things. Worth checking out.
something to do

As a barbarian warrior im not casting spells in combat but have a few buttons to hit in melee combat (taunt slam, bash, or kick range weapons when nessecary and macros for continued coordination of group)the taunt slam buttons i hit regularly in combat as soon as the clear for two reasons foes the most damage and keeps the mob on me respectivly and raises the skill my sense heading skill is also maxed out because i put it in that block and just use it in battle while im clicking the rest anyways its not as tedious as trying to train IT WHILE WALKING MEDDING OR RANDOM (whoops caps) by now its so common i do it automatically and doesnt interfere with the battle, and if you can raise it effortlessly why not? sense heading 200+ bragging rights! and if it does become implemated for better (like higher levels can get "you are faceing south by southwest) wouldnt it suck if you couldnt use this the day it was implemented cuz you never trained up. either way i plan on keeping it up take care friends
SENSE HEAD... The EASY way!

Are you sick and tired of hitting that SENSE HEADING button a thousand and one times to keep it capped? Me too... until I got smart.

Do what I did: Forget about SENSE HEADING! Keep it capped without even trying! Here's how:

1) Set up SENSE HEADING as a macro key on the left side of your screen. I use box #5, so I'll use that in this example.

2) Go to OPTIONS, then KEYBOARD. Go NEXT until you get to USER IDENTIFIED #5. (Use the entry that corresponds to the box you put your macro in)

3) Right click on the secondary slot for this key (the bottom of the pair), then press your Up Arrow button.

Voila!!! Now, whenever you press the Up Arrow key to move forward in the game, you are practicing your SENSE HEADING! If you don't want to see the SENSE HEADING messages after it maxes (and it will sooner than you think) just go back into OPTIONS, KEYBOARD and take it off! What could be easier?

This can be used for many other things too! Are you a Bard who always wants to sing Selo's when you run? Put it in a slot!

I found it even better to combine sense heading with another hotkey.

For example, on my paladin, Yaulp is always my spell number one. so instead of just dropping the spell into the hotkey bank, I went to the social keys, and made the following key, labelled Yaulp.

/cast 1
/doability 1

ability one is sense heading.

I sense heading every time I yaulp. Skills up fast.

Even easier for bards to get their sense heading up is to use it for the button repop delay on their hotkeys. I keep mine maxed that way : )
There is a strategy to this?
# Dec 11 2001 at 8:52 PM Rating: Excellent
Ummm. Here is my strategy for sense heading. Make a hot button. When facing a direction hit the button. It will tell you which direction you are facing. Repeat.

I work all the skills I can to the max. So when my 25th level Dwarven Paladin hit 130 sense heading I told a friend of mine. He laughed. He pretty much stopped when he hit 100. He was right. What will it matter if my sense heading is 200? or 250? It works the same as it does at 80 or 100.

Maybe if they let you steer the boats between continents and reduce the travel time by 15 minutes if you had a 200 skill in sense heading. Then it would be a valuable skill.

I am ambivalent about the worth of raising Sense Heading to lofty heights, but the skill itself has come in handy the few times that my human monk couldn't see his hand in front of his face for the dark or my halfling druid was momentarily disoriented in the rain at night. Other than that, you are correct. There is nothing special or especially advantageous about a super-high Sense Heading skill level.

Personally, I am mildly annoyed with Verant that the success and failure messages for a Master in Sense Heading is the same as for a rank beginner.

A more appropriate message for a Master's successful attempts would be: "You are confident that you are facing North."

A more appropriate message for a Master's failed attempts would be something along the lines of: "You cannot be positive of which direction you are facing."

I may be alone in this, but I know that I would like it better that way.

By the way, I feel the same about maximizing every available skill, too.

This was posted before the compass came out of course. : ) As your sense heading increases, the compass wanders less. Over 200 it just glides along with you.
