1 equip fishing pole in primary and bait in ranged
2 hit ALT M to bring up your actions window
3 right click an empty slot (#1 if you are going to copy the fishing macro below)
4 assign fishing to the slot
5 push fishing button.

also found a useful macro:

/doability 1
/pause 115
/autoinventory
/doability 1

This will allow you to fish, auto inventory your 1st catch and then cast. however you will have to manually inventory the 2nd catch.

Just so folks know, there are 4 different varieties of Large Fetid Bass. They Identify as 18lb. 19lb. 20lb. and 21lb. (Giant Fetid Bass ID as 22lb., Gigantic as 22lb., and Humungous as 25lb. I believe).

But the bad new about the Large ones is that they have no Tradeskill tag, meaning you can't make HQ Fish Bones with them... Even the 2 lb. Fetid Bass can make regular Fish Bones, used to make Fishbone Darts. Oh well.

The Large ones are only a meal, and nothing else.

Equip a fishing pole in your main hand. Have bait in your inventory. Stand at the edge of a body of water, make a hotkey for Fishing from the Actions menu (ctrl+a), and press it. Your character will make a cast with his/her fishing pole.

If you get the message that asks you if you're trying to catch land sharks, either you're not close enough to the water or you can't fish there. I've noticed that sometimes it says that after I've had a few successful casts, but just adjusting positioning helps. You can't fish while you are in water, but you can if you are levitating above it.

saltwater seaweed is for Sea Temper, which is used for human cultural smithing.
Since it's annoying to farm it on your own people buy the components and 2pp is very cheap for such a component ;) try to sell it for 20+ next time hehe
Edit: i don't play on FV, i guess there isn't as much request for cultural armor as on other servers.. still you should be able to get a good price.

I don't know what the going price of saltwater seaweed, but here is what I do in the bazaar. If you sell out quickly, then next time mark it up some. (eg. if you sold out at 2pp, then mark it up to 5 or 10) Keep marking it up each time until you find the point that you no longer sell out in a reasonable amount of time. Also, keep checking the prices others are selling at. After you find the max price you can sell at, you can often find others selling at a lower price. This is where you can buy low and sell high and make a profit.

One of the petty annoyances of being Vah Shir is the fact you eat and drink so much. Fishing is one cheap way around the problem. Specifically, fishing in Firiona Vie. the Fetid Bass come in a variety of sizes. The small ones are a meal. The medium size ones are a hearty meal. The large bass are a banquet or even a feast! For a handful of coppers and a half hours time I can catch enough food to last nearly a game month.

As mentioned above, high-end tailors need cod oil, and for this they need cobalt cods. I believe wyvern combines (which require the oil) are a very good way to practice after you finish acrylia studded, and maybe even before, depending on the price of acrylia on your server. I personally pay 30pp each for the fish or the oil. I *have* paid up to 50pp, but I was desperate. :) Also,... we need LOTS and LOTS of it... not so much for actually making the arctic wyvern items to sell, but going through the practice combines. Let's put it this way, if someone came to me with 20 stacks of cod oil, I would buy them for 12k, without thinking twice. Cobalt Scar is not an easy zone, and I certainly can't (presently) go there and fish with any real security. For those who can fish there safely, it can be worth it.

Yes and no.

What you catch sell back to the vendor for more than what you paid for normal bait, so in that respect, yes, you can make a few plat peices here and there.

Some fish are worth real plat to players -

Cobalt Scar fish are needed for high end tailoring.
The fish from the plane of Nightmare and Valor are used in a PoK quest for a magical fishing rod.
The fishing skill is used to make the Blessed Fishing Rods needed in the PotC quest.
Saltwater seaweed fished in OoT is needed for human cultural armor.

All of this stuff sells for some nice plat, so a skilled fisherman can make some nice plat on the side.

Verant did not include such benefits with a skill that people would usually pay no attention to. They gave no incentive. It's like they said "Hey, we need another skill.... there's not enough... I got it! How about fishing"? You could have at least made it worth our while Verant, but overall EQ is still an awesome MMORPG!

Well, you COULD go to your guild trainer, and just buy the last 39 points. Since fishing isn't one of the 7 primary tradeskills, you CAN buy skillups. Another alternative would be buy a tackle box and some components, and make lures, WHILE you are fishing. This should greatly increase your skillup rate.

As a shaman I cast two kinds of spells a lot: conjuration and alteration. I cast evocation spells fairly often as well. Therefore these skills get enough use that they routinely stay close to maximum for each level.

Not so with divination and abjuration. These are very useful skills, but they don't get used all the time: so it's easy to be lagging 30 or 40 points below the maximum. Then you get new spells in these catetories and try them out, and you fizzle fizzle fizzle.

So you have to practice. Boring boring boring. Here's how fishing makes magic practice a little more interesting.

Setup. On one of the back ranks of hotkeys I set slot 2 to hold the skill Fishing, slot 3 contained the gem for Fleeting Fury (a fast abjuration spell), and slot 4 contained the gem for True North, a fast divination spell. Then I opened inventory, opened a bag to hold fish and miscellaneous loot, and closed inventory.

Action. I targetted myself, since Fleeting Fury is a buff. Then, standing on the south side of a body of water, I tapped 2 to begin fishing, followed by 3 to cast Fleeting Fury. Then, following spell recovery time, I tapped 4 to cast True North.

These spells are fast, so I could tap both of them twice in the time it took fishing to reset.

In the time it took to run through a stack of 20 fishing baits, I would improve fishing by half a dozen points, have some fresh fish to eat or bake with. At the same time I would have seen abjuration and divination increase by perhaps 8 to 10 points each.

I'm not sure I appreciate Verant's new concept of weighing in your catch.

Sure it might be more satisfying to catch and 18lb Fetid Bass than a 2lb one, but look at the side effect.
Before, when I fished, I got a nice neat stack of fish, a few stackable fish scales, and maybe a dagger or shoe or two to sell for a few coppers.

Now, I get a 2lb Bass, and then a 5lb bass, and then an enormous fetid base, and a 7lb bass, and a 12lb bass and then a tiny fish.

Now, I realize that a guppy is a nibblet (less if your name is Pusbag) and a 18lb fish is a big meal. And I can appreaciate that a bigger fish will keep me fed longer.

But now, I have 18 stacks of one fish each in my inventory! Where am I supposed to put the stuff I actually need?

Think, Verant. Please.

If I remember correctly I caught a 17 lb bass and had a total catch of about 120 lbs. or so. I won 5 plats from the barbarian, we sold all our fish to the vendor, then proceeded to spend all our money on ale. We just got drunk and gave everybody sows.

However, it IS kind of odd and one has to wonder whether or not there will be some significance attached to one size or the other of the Fetid Bass at some future date. Quests pop up all the time, so you never know.

It is a relaxing way to spend time while waiting to do something else. My 11th level bard was in North Ro and realized foolishly that he had to get his 11th level song in Kelethin. So, while waiting quite a while for the ship, he thought, "What the heck? I'll start a new skill." So he bought a pole and a stack of bait, went out on the dock and started casting. He also sang, practiced meditating and sense direction. Since he couldn't see anything while medding, he asked someone to shout when the ship came in. Out of the first 10 casts he caught 4 fish, 3 scales and a rusty dagger. Almost enough to pay for the pole. After the run to Kelethin, he did the same thing at the ButcherBlock docks. I haven't had time to discover what other things are available to fishermen, but all my characters who are near water will take up fishing soon.

Keep an eye out when fishing at docks in Butcherblock (Kaladim Docks). I have been fishing on the platform between the two docks, nearest to the one for the ship for Freeport and had Glubsink aggro on me.

If you hear a lot of splashing -- like someone is trying to climb out of the water and onto the dock -- it may be him. That's all the warning I got when he first came after me.

He was a tough fight that first time and killed me. Second time, HE was fish food.

Here's one for you rogues. I have hotkeys set up for sense heading, sneak, hide, and fishing in that order, usually on my 3rd hotkey box. I found that by doing this, I can essentially work on 4 skills at once, catch my dinner and more, and find some junk to sell.

Ok. I heard a rumor the other night about a fly you make using pixie dust and something from Dreadlands (The person wasn't sure what the name was)that is supposed to let you catch gems and make an easy 5000 platinum and no i didn't add an extra 0 in there. As i said it is just a rumor and not believeing it yet(don't want to spend a lot of wasted time on a rumor until confirmed)and I would really appreciate any info.

Saltwater Seaweed is a special catch from OOT, I don't believe you need 100+ fishing skill to obtain it. It is used in creating the Sea Temper used by Freeport Human smiths to make their special racial armor.

I started caching this in OOT at skill level 15. Of course, now I catch TOO MUCH of it (seaweed to fish, 5/3), so I, A) took up brewing to make tempers and, b) went somewhere else =/ FV is a good place to fish.

wana get high skills? I find fishing, swimming, and sense heading the fastest ones to raise. To fish: 1. go to felwithe or any place with fishing stores in it, go and buy a fishing pole (they cost 1gp). Then, get some bait and stuff, make a hotkey :Fishing :2. go to some place with water (again felwithe has SAFE waters) walk up close to the end and then click :Fishing. hint: if ya fall in the water press Page Up. then it will either say,"You didn't catch anything." or,"You caught... something." or better,"You have raised your skill in fishing! need more help? e-mail me at calilieeq@yahoo.com

If you have levitate cast on you while traveling on a boat this will allow you to fish. Another way is to jump off the top deck of the boat and cast before you hit the deck below. You will take a little damage but worth it for long boat rides.
I also found that fishing at low levels and then selling back the fish you can aquire armor and items quicker then killing rats and spiders.

I have a fishing skill level of 135. I have never caught anything other then an assortment of fish types, rusty knives, tattered sandles, and fish scales. I have fished in many bodies of water in many different zones and NOT ONCE have I pulled up anything of any substantial value. I have used lures, fishing grubbs, Catch-A-Lot bait, regular bait, and see no difference in casting in regards to what I catch or how often I catch something.

So the rumors of catching valuable items are just that-Rumors! I'll believe it when I catch it and until then it just supplies me with food and relaxation.

I just caught a bunch of "stonefish" near the docks in Butcherblock Mountains. Just posting here since they're not on the list as a special catch.

I have also caught the salmon, mackerel, and seaweed at various points.

They should let you fish off the boats..Especially off the bloated considering the wait..That would actually i think make sense. =)

Just read that the sewer catfish are used in the Catfish Sandwich quest in Lake off Ill Omen. But it was listed as an unfinished quest. Seems to require the baking skill and a bunch of small side quests for "ingredients". Any additional input on this would be great.

Hi everyone. I'm new to EQ, and had a question about fishing that I thought someone might know. Can you make your own fishing poles? I've heard that you can make your own lures, but a master fisherman should be able to make his own pole too I would think. Let me know if you have any experience or knowledge in this area. Thanks.

I don't think making fishing poles is considered a fishing skill--rather, a collapsible fishing pole can be tinkered (gnome-specific skill, not really practical til lvl 16). In general, EQ has pretty much ignored fishing; for instance, making, and fishing with, flies really seems to offer no advantage over buying and using cheap bait (tho I would be very happy to learn that I am wrong here)

I have caught a 16lb bass in the stream in FV that leads to Lake of ill Omen. Rather than being a meal it says it is a feast ...great but what the heck does fishing really do other than add some amusement to medding and a bit of extra food to my inventory? Will it come in handy later?

The highest trivial fly is the Yappin Doggie series made out of a Piece of Gnoll Fur (Blackburrow) and these are trivial around 35. I haven't heard the one about the fish eggs (Skinning knife, etc) But the people on eqtradeskills.com have been sh*tting a brick trying to find how to get fish eggs. I guess I'll run over there and see if they figured this one out yet as well.
