Begging

Begging is the ability to get small coins from various NPC's. It is a very dangerous skill, since many prefer to kill the begger rather than give him anything.

What is the best way to use this skill? How and where can you improve your begging skill? What, if any, use is this skill? What type of money can be made through begging?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the begging skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Anyone have a suggestion for Begging at 125? I tried the guy in 4th Gate below, but after hundreds of begging attempts, still nothing.

Bouncer Fug - Feerrott, The Dream
# Sep 10 2021 at 1:00 PM Rating: Good
After reading most of the below post I decided to try and find an NPC similar to Nyquill's Prince Tarant Thex. So i skipped the trial and error of all previously mentioned NPCs and decided to find someone new.

Prerequisites
1. My goal was to find NPCs near PoK books:
--Just in case I needed to run.
2. Find an NPC that all my alts could use.
3. Hope to find an NPC that the entire player base could use.

Based on the information provided my first thought was that the begging skillup RNG was better on higher level NPCs than lower level. So I decided lets start at the highest zone possible from the PoK books. Being on my level 115 Troll Berserker with a 57 disarm skill level (Used the Quest NPC by West Freeport PoK book to get from 3-57 before I started getting multiple fails to skill up starting around 35 skill), I zoned into Feerrott, The Dream. I tried the Quest NPCs near the book. Not one skill up. Hit the zone wall and ran into Bouncer Fug. Hit the macro, all 5 skillups. My next failed skillup wasn't till 111. Between 111 and 289 I was on a slightly better than 8 for 10 skillup path. I didn't see my first triple fail till 387, the next wasn't till 496, 503, and lastly 525.
526-532 - 51 attempts
533-541 - 25 attempts

From 541 on it was very similar to Nyquill's Prince Tarant Thex. Very slow after 553 (took 47 attempts to 554).

Never once did Bouncer Fug attack me. Not sure if NPCs still attack for begging. Zone line and PoK book are close by if anything would happen.

Brought my Human Monk down (KoS) and used a Essence of Ogre potion (Alchemy 210 trivial combine). Conned Dubious. Hit macro key and got the first 93 points before a fail. So I stopped there for the day.

Berserker stats All primary stats 1000+. Monk stats Wis/Int 563/624 the rest over 1000.

Best part is that this is a static mob. Easy access to PoK or Oggok zone line.

Hope this helps

Go to Abysmal Sea. Pick a mob, any mob and beg - you will level up and never get attacked.

Also, you can drink and bind wounds while you do it.

Go to the end of the hall, just befor the Dawnshroud Peaks zone in. You will find an NPC named Larin Sardor. I made it to about 198 before i started to see fewer skill ups but with a macro and some time, it will still increase.

Ok I have tried every suggestion in this guide. They aren't consistent and it will take you forever to level. I Found the Best NPC to my research and will get you 7 out of 10 skill ups to level 520 out of 575 then it's like 1 out of 20 from 520 - max 575.
The NPC's Name is PRINCE TARANT THEX (Dreadguard) Foun in Neriak Fourth Gate in the Barracks. This dude is by far the best and most consistent way to level Begging.

1. If you are not a Dark Elf then you are KOS to this mob and surrounding guards.
2. This NPC does not stay in one static place, he wanders within the room every 2 minutes. ( most likely on purpose so as to deter the AFK auto Players}
3. He does not give coin just the skill ups.

HOW to do this if you are not a Dark Elf
1. Have a Guise of the Deceiver Mask from the Casino award. (You can buy a total of 6 Gold Tickets to turn in to the Casino to Guarantee this Drop) Gold Tickets are bought from Bazaar players or from your Loyalty Tokens and handed in to Alerynril in PoK)
They are Lore so you have to buy one at a time them hand them in to Jacob Thornblade in Shadowhaven

2. You could buy 10 dose Dark elf illusions in Bazaar

Hope this Helps, if anyone can top this method please share !
By the way, when I found this method I was at 400 begging when I started. 2 and a half hours later I was maxed at 575. Compared to 6 skill ups every hour at the G-Fay Spires Scion

BEST WAY TO LEVEL BEGGING SKILL

I can confirm that Prince Tarant Thex in Neriak Fourth Gate yields skill-ups for begging slightly quicker than other NPCs, at least based on my limited experience. As a level 113 human monk, it seemed like my skill just wouldn't budge above 560. I think I did over 250 attempts with different NPCs before I reached 561. When I tried Prince Tarant, I was able to get to 565, but it was still painful. Probably 1 skill up every 50-100 attempts. The Essence of Dark Elf potion was all I needed to do this safely.

The only reason I'm even doing this at all is to try to get all my skills maxxed -- I haven't EVER received anything in return for begging, so it seems like a completely useless skill.

I tried this first with various NPCs in PoK but assume it's blocked the same way a bard can't play a AoE damage song, then followed advice and sat in the Nexus spire in Gfay begging from the Scion. After the Feb 2019 patch https://forums.daybreakgames.com/eq/index.php?threads/game-update-notes-february-20-2019.254794/
it seems the skill rises quite fast. As a L48 monk with 255 stats I went up to 188 before an unsuccessful beg didn't give a skill increase. But with a 10s refresh it still took 45 minutes to get to 192 (at L48 that's out of 240) where the skill increases dried up. I created a social with 5 lines of
pause 100,/doability 6 [where 6 was Begging]
which helped a lot but it still took another 15 minutes to get to 200 so factor that in if you're looking to max your skill (at least at lower levels).

Even with a few pauses to break the tedium or bashing a wandering orc pawn for old time's sake I got to hate the mystic voice announcing the portal activity and Eldinn Ner wandering past. Should have done it on a character who could practise languages or divinity spells or something else to fill the time but I wanted this monk to be able to wear https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=92380 and figured there's only so much alcohol effects I can deal with (at least the refresh on drinking is half that of begging)

I tried the soulbinder next to the bank in South Qeynos. I raised the skill from 2 to 55. Took about 10 hours using macro. However, not a single copper. :)

Yes, begging can still be leveled up in 2017 by carefully choosing who you beg from. Permarooted mobs would be good if they aren't so far above you where they can kill you with one shot. If you beg and they attack, you can back away and they won't chase you. A good mob for newbies is Arias in the Gloomingdeep tutorial. I got more than 20 skill ups from him with a new character recently without him ever attacking.

I can confirm that as a paladin, I used Flash of Light and Begging to increase agro. My original theory was that damage + Spellcasting + Begging would increase hate and protect a main tank in emergencies and is not 100% reliable. Additionally, the entire group needs to be aware as the goal is to keep hate close to main tank and for him to stop taunt/attack and step back to reduce his agro.

Maxxed Begging
# Feb 24 2014 at 1:13 PM Rating: Decent
My main toon is level 88 and I have just maxxed my begging at 440. I mostly raised it with the guards in Felwithe (north and south) and Kelethin, but I also went to Field of Scales with an iksar illusion and raised it on mobs; I call it "begging the mobs to death" Instead of hitting attack, I taunt bash and use spells to kill the mobs so I can keep begging. It took me a lot of time to max it. Now, I am wondering what use it is. I can get copper, silver and gold from NPCs with the title "guard" (not guardian) My disarm is maxxed as well so I can make mobs drop their weapons which provides another small amount of money now and then.

Never bothered with this "skill" before but now I'm kinda obsessed with maxing out every measurable skill in EQ. Using the Soulbinder in Rivervale I was able to skill up to 188 very quickly. But that seems to be some sort of "cap" since further increases have slowed to a complete crawl. Took 32 attempts to get to 190 (2 successes!) Oh well, something to do while watching TV. Altho at this point I'll probably switch to the macro version shown here and level it up along with some of my melee skills. My H2H is really poor! ;)

Are you Drunk or just building aggro?
# Aug 25 2013 at 5:44 AM Rating: Decent
The only successes I have had from begging were when I was drunk. If I'm not, I usually just get ignored. At a skill of 180 I got as much as 1 gold from a guard. My skill is much higher now and I have not tried to beg npc's much since 180.

I skill up off mobs I'm fighting.

A macro I wish I new earlier is /doability #
/autoattack off
/doability #
/autoattack on

On another note, there is a heavy circulating rumor that Begging can build aggro. But I don't know how to confirm this.

I used that macro successfully grinding aa in Barindu.

My begging rose steadily. Also, I did see an increase in aggro doing this. Paladin boxing a druid.

Find a Nexus Scion - anywhere but the nexus-- most are in a safe area and are indifferent to about anyone. Then make a hot key from your begging skill - and key it "e" or some unused key in the key part of your options. Then, on your computer, press the shift key 5 times -- this should turn on your sticky keys and make your computer hit the same key or key sequence over and over. quoting from wiki "Usage

In Windows, to toggle on the StickyKeys feature, the user presses the Shift key 5 times in a row or press left Alt, left Shift and Print Scrn, and to turn it off press both shift keys at the same time. When activated, a dialog box appears, and the computer makes an internal chirp.[4] This is consistent with the activation sequence on the Macintosh. The activation is indicated by a small icon in the menu bar."

this allows you to beg while afk. The scion is one of the safest to beg from. my begging is now maxed.

I'm confused -- I understand everything up until the point that my EQ client will beg while I'm AFK...?

I start the program while I'm loaded in my EQ client by clicking the left 'SHIFT' key twice -- it starts up and then I click 'YES' -- now what?

How do I then have key "1" (my hotbutton macro) pressed (w/ or w/out an interval) while I'm AFK?

Nothing seems to happen when I hit "1" in game once the program has started.

I'm running WIN 7 w/ EQ in maximized window mode.

Thanks

Upon reading about sticky keys, I only found that you could use it to continuously keep shift, crtrl, alt etc. down? Not to repeat the "e" key?

Could anyone confirm that this is a way to repeatedly press "e"?

I made a hotkey that turns attack off, then begs from the mob, then turns attack back on. I have it set to the same bind key as kick, so every time I go to kick the mob, it begs from them, too. This has allowed me to raise my begging.

The best/safest place for skill ups I found are starting cities. I maxed my skill at 375 just off the Soulbinder.

From my knowledge pets and anything in PoK gave no skill up on anything I tried.

Other information I gathered from doing skill ups are anyone (everyone I attempted at least) with just a name and no title under it will attack eventually. For example Guards, Eracon Krengon, or Exterminator's will attack but Soulbinder Novalu with a title under name (Soulbinder) will not. Secondly I noticed that if I did not get a skill up in the first 20 or so attempts (skill 1-100) from an NPC I moved on until I did. Examples are Sorn Copperhold (Banker).

well just like to say as a beastlord i took the advise that mobbs give you better chance to skill up. I found i don't get aggro from gators in LP with my class so i can just beg gators or the natural mobbs in beach area and never even fight one.
