Begging

Begging is the ability to get small coins from various NPC's. It is a very dangerous skill, since many prefer to kill the begger rather than give him anything.

What is the best way to use this skill? How and where can you improve your begging skill? What, if any, use is this skill? What type of money can be made through begging?

Post your strategies on how to best develop and use the begging skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Beg while attacking

I am a level 16 enchanter and i have a 94 begging skill and i have found the easiest way to beg is to attack something and after the attack is dealt with turn off auto attack then beg then turn on auto attack than turn it off then beg and so on
What Factors In Exp???
# Jun 24 2001 at 2:41 PM Rating: Decent
What is it that gets you exp from begging, at what amount of money do you gain exp too? I would figure after failing a beg a few hundred times any success should be worth some exp.

Anyone know what would happen if you begged the begger in the Butcherblock port? Just wondering

it is not true about no way other than casting zoning or someone else hailing. If you get in a fight while being followed, he migth start attacking the target ad it will kill him. This happened to me while fighting a lowlands basilisk.

Dude, don't hail, beg, attack, or in any way, shape, or fun have contact with the begger. He will follow you anywhere and he cannot be damaged, I have tried. The only way to get rid of him is for someone else to hail him or zone.

I have to share this....
Just the other day I saw a gnome beg from him and she got attacked.. she hit the begger once and he fled about 20 steps and laid down on the ground.... after he regenerated some hp from the hit he suffered he got back up and ran back at the gnome, shortly thereafter he was killed.

the begger seems to like sleeping or laying on the ground heh even when fighting.

he gives a negative hit for 3 things but gives good neriak faction...... one of the negative things is rivervale forget the others as well sorry.

Not true that he cant be damaged...dropped him with one shot (381pt dd) with my shaman while passing thru BB: dropped nothing and gave neg hit for one of the rivervale factions, sorry cant remember which one...

My beg level is around 80, not sure which, and only once have i gotton something other than a cp. I got a gp and xp. Granted, the xp was the same as killing a greenie, but it was xp nonetheless. I found a good way to raise your beg faction is to find a farmer in any of the karanas and beg from him for a while.

Open your skill window, highlight begging, and click "make button," or go to your ability 1 - 6 window (CTRL + A), right click, and it will be one of the options.
easy begging help

Hi there is a listing below about easy begging.
I tried to put begging and attack on the macro button put could not get it to work. Has anyone done this and if sow how did you get it to work.
RE: easy begging help
# Jun 26 2001 at 7:45 PM Rating: Decent
This is how to set up the macro:
/autoattack
/doability x(x being the number beg is set on)
/autoattack
Make sure you have begun to attack or this macro won't work. Also you cannot cast while this macro is in action.

Change it to:
/autoattack off
/doability x
/autoattack on

Then you don't have to make sure you're attacking when you start.
Of course it also guarantees you'll be attacking afterwards, so make sure you don't use it when you're actually trying to beg for something (instead of to raise skill)...

Not that I'd ever recommend trying to beg for something...begging was a skill that was put in very early on, but left undeveloped and so near useless.

Charisma
# Jun 03 2001 at 9:58 PM Rating: Default
I've spent a lot of time begging from Shady in East Commons on Cazic Thule. I currently have a skill of 190 on Begging and have gotten copper and silver from Shady and Bubar consistantly if they still have money on them.

Charisma above 90 helps to make sure you don't **** them off and that you become successful at begging. A higher skill also helps on success and on wheather or not the NPC will attack you, but Charisma is key. Really high charisma does not actually affect your rate of skill gain; Intelligence or Wisdom (depending which is higher) will do that.

Now... here's a challenge: Beg from a Dragon =)
I plan on doing this when I can have a cleric to do a rez on standby. Till then, I'm still shooting for 200 while I auction my life away in EC. LOL

Unsuccessful

I have gotten my beg to like 50 and I have been killed maybe 5 times. I have NEVER goten anything from beg... I am a lvl 6 mag looking for money and I was thinking to myself what could be quicker than sitting around and NOT earning money. The only thing that has come out of begging for me is a loss of exp... :(
practicing begging
# May 14 2001 at 11:17 PM Rating: Decent
I have been begging from the low level fisherman (his name starts with an M.. I think) for a while. I'm level fifteen, a bard, i sinf the Charismatic Carillon, which makes him con kindly, and then i beg and fish. (Personally I wouldn't feel kindly towards anyone who killed ME 7 times in a couple hours, but I guess he's more forgiving then I am).
At skill level 23 in begging i get coppers and silvers from him.
And begging from monsters you're fighting is good too. They don't give you anything, but if you fight a lot you can get a lot of practice and boost your skill level fairly quickly. Especiialy with a high intelligence/wisdom (neither of which I have).
But, like I said, if you're a good race, go fish in wc and beg from the fisherman. He's really low, so if he attacks you it doesn't matter, you can kill him easily, and his deaths don't seem to effect how he feels about you.
Kill him and you lose faction with Karana, though.
west commons?
# Jul 27 2001 at 12:10 PM Rating: Default
You said wc. As in West Commons? I certainly hope you aren't sitting there fishing when the giants spawns like i heard someone shout after he got killed at the docks there by him.
Come on!

Has anyone here really got a skill lvl of 200, and if you do, do you really get plat each time ya beg? if at skill lvl 200 you get plat EVERY time then it is WELL WORTH IT!

Begging with the bard has been easy up to skill 30 so far and only got killed 3 times, each time I got attacked I didnt have a song going..Ive tried to get the PoD to kill me by begging but he really doesnt care. Below level 4 I would make a total pest of myself beacuse death meant a free bunch-a-biscuts.The ore seller in H Keep was the only one who wasted me on the first beg..Up to a whopping 5cp so far at 1cp a success...Its not the money for me, its having the NPC say Take this and LEAVE ME ALONE in a crowd that gives me my cheap thrill...
Instant Death
# May 07 2001 at 6:07 PM Rating: Default
OKay, so I was a newbie and didn't know anything about the game, but I needed cash. So i thought, hey, why go arounded turning in bat wings and spider legs when I could just sit around and beg off people. At that time I was a little ol high elf. Anyway, I went to the jewel seller in felwithe (my home town) and hit the beg button. He killed me!! Just like that. I have never begged since!
dont beg
# Apr 25 2001 at 4:10 PM Rating: Default
Forget begging, learn some other skill, like tailoring, or jewelcraft. My begging skill is like 80+ an the most ive gotten is a few cp from some npc in rivervale. One of my chars is a master baker and can get 1 to 2 pp profit from making a batch of fish fillets. And it can be really fun to give some blackened Tier'Dal to a dark elf. Or making a batch of Dwarf Chops and giving em to a dwarf. Cannabalizim sends a certain message dont you think?
RE: dont beg
# Jul 25 2001 at 10:51 PM Rating: Decent
they just nerfed fish fillets - merchants dont buy them for as much unless u get people to buy them. i dunno hwo it works i just read it in the patch message
Reason for Begging
# Apr 19 2001 at 8:03 PM Rating: Decent
I'm an enchanter of the Solusek Ro server, and I've taken up begging simply for the fun and role-playing involved. I love sitting around with a group you hardly know in downtime, then shouting "Begging up to 49! WOOT!", or /e has become better at Begging! (50).

Crysies, the not-so-smart but charismatic enchantress.
"Math is hard, but who cares? I'll never have to pay for my drinks!"

P.S.- If anyone has some factual knowledge on the effects of charisma raising begging and NPC's chances of attacking based on faction- don't hold it back on me!

Hello, Kadthar here for my "friend" Beetlebrow who only tends to beg body parts off people (and does it with an axe)

I have kept my begging maxed out now for several levels. As you might suspect from that statement, I am a pet-caster. By far the least dangerous way to improve begging, and the most reliable is to beg your pet or someone else's during downtime while meditating. At one time, one could beg the boats, if one stood in a very particular place on them, but a patch not too long ago changed that and now boats seem to always be too far away to beg no matter what the position. Begging in combat also seems a viable option, but certainly would not provide as many opportunities to improve one's skill. As one might gather, pets do not give one anything when begging. Almost all of my skill increases were from begging pets, most of whom I had armed, and none have ever returned any money or items.
(Please give me a rock Gebn! No, oh splendid one! How about a lump of dirt! Leave me alone oh splendid one!)
At Begging 115, I still only get 1 or 2 CP usually from NPCs I beg, but I do get that fairly often. I hope to one day see if it is possible to get more, and perhaps I will attempt it with higher Charisma as well, once I have the items to raise it. There are rumors that rogues actually receive more money from begging, but these are unverified as well. I have been attacked twice while begging NPCs, but only after multiple begging attempts in short succession. I have tried begging guards and merchants and have found that merchants seem to part with their cash more rarely, and I believe they are more likely to attack, though I have not been attacked enough to say for sure.
Your best shot then seems to be begging from your pet or another's pet to increase skill. As far as getting money, I guess your best shot is to get to 200 Begging and 200 Charisma and experiment.
Good luck all, and I will continue to post here whenever I find new information about this most maligned of skills.

Do NPCs actually run out of money?
# Mar 13 2001 at 12:00 PM Rating: Default
And if so, how do you know? Do they say, "I am out of money?"

I ask this because I have a warrior and charisma is low of course, and I got two copper off a lady and my skill is not too high.

I may have found a gold mine if she doesn't run out of money and I get my skill up.

Beggars seem to give you money more then everyone else. When my begging was around 10 I easily got a cp 1/10 tries from the beggar in highkeep.

Shuttle Begging
# Mar 06 2001 at 2:02 PM Rating: Decent
I was able to beg off of a Shuttle. My skill is low so I was unsecessfull. I don't know if you can get money from them, but they can't kill you so it seems to be a good way to increase the skill. If anyone has gotten money grom it please reply I would like to know.

i have begged it must be like 9,999,999,999 times from my pet and my beg is some where around lvl 60 still no money from it but i think (dont hold me to it but) if you beg npcs they dont attack untill you do it 100 or so times. i begged a guard in eurodine when i was meding as a low lvl and was attacked once after making my beg lvl 25 or so begging from him so i would not worry about guards attacking you.

Easy Begging
# Feb 21 2001 at 11:54 AM Rating: Decent
First put begging on an ability button (duh)
Then set up a macro button from your Socials to
/attack
/doability x (button you put begging on)
/attack

Now go fight something then just attack it and press your macro button you made for begging. The only 'downside' to this is the attack music cuts on then off but since I play my stereo I don't personally care. I used this last night and I saw now loss hits in combat and it actually seems to suplement my taunt.

PS It helps to put the begging button itself up so you can see when it resets
my idea
# Jan 08 2001 at 1:31 AM Rating: Default
ok, im a little Shaman who has never tried anything like this, but i thought of an idea when sitting here bored reading about beg (mine is 11, hehe)

Some people say that u can beg items like weapons off ur pets and stuff

Enchanters can take on any form they want

So then, i see this as something like this:
The enchanter hypothetically wants a Crude Stein. they cast Illusion Ogre and make thenselves as Charismac as possible. then they go beg from the Ogre Guard and get themselves a Crude Stein. Simple, Effective, and probably doesn't work but like i said i know nuthing.

Peace be to Sukis,

I can understand it not working if you have never given you pet anything that he could give back.

If you gave you pet a weapon for dual wield (level 29 & up for enchanter), would he give it back?

i have a 200 begging skill now :P and i have gotten everyone of those 200 skill points from begging pets, and not just mine, and i have never in my begging life gotten a weapon from my pet, so NO you do not get weapons back from your pet. (wow that sentence was long...)
