Foraging

The foraging skill is specific to certain classes and races, allowing them to rustle up food, drink and other odd items.

What are the best strategies to developing and using your foraging skill? Which classes and races should be concentrating on this skill? What items can you find through foraging? How can you best make this skill useful?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the foraging skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

to the level 9 warrior:
You are most likely a wood elf, and wood elves have forage at 50 from the start. Next time you level you will get forage to go up. For you the skill cap is 50 atm (9x5+5=50) So... just keep lvling =)

EQ Druids has some good information on foraged items. I printed out the list for reference. When I forage something that is not on the list or doesn't have compelte information, I check out the quest section on this site searching by item. Tedious sometimes, but better than tossing an item you might need later on.

Ok Im new and Im trying to find out how to do everything, like forging - sewing , and see what spells do what. But everytime I look on here I find other people asking questions and I dont find any answers. What am I doing wrong? where am I suppose to be looking?
A little advice . . .
# Jul 24 2001 at 4:51 PM Rating: Decent
This may be the best advice about figuring out what all the foraged 'stuff' is for . . . look into skills (all of them) and look into quest info, if something in lore, no drop, it is probably a quest item, if u can't eat or drink it it is used with other materials for a skill. I have learned so much about my foraged items this way.

Foraging skill

Depending on your level and class your Forage skill may not go up. If you are a Wood Elf Ranger (like one of my characters) I started with a skill of 50. It didn't increase until I got to level 10 and then it went up to 55. The easiest way to get your forage skill up is to use it. Same as all the other skills. I use it when I walk/run from one end of the continent to the other. Also just before I med or sit to heal. The hardest part about forage is the fact that the reset time on the button is so long that you can forget to press it again as soon as it is available.

This setting of keys is something I haven't learned how to do yet.. how do you add a command like forage or sense-heading to a movement key?
RE: Foraging skill
# Sep 11 2001 at 5:40 AM Rating: Default
Got to main menu screen (hit F10), right lower side is "Abilities". Click. Click on one of the skill slots that appear. Select from the menu that appears. Left click/hold. You will pick it up. Press F10 until 10 hotkeys on screen. Click again in one of the hot key slots. Done. Can do the same with triggered effectson your armour to put them in hotkeys.

The forage skill has a cap depending on your level, as well. If I recall correctly it is either 5 skill points per level or 5 skill points per level plus 5. So at level 9 your foraging skill will cap at either 45 or 50. Quicker than even hitting your forage button while medding would be to add an additional keyboard command and "link" the forage to a movement key (I prefer mine to one of the left or right since the "forward" button is often held down constantly but the left/right directions are always being adjusted).

As far as I know you can be doing ANYTHING and try foraging and your skill can increase. I've been medding and hit my forage macro to get the message "you must be standing to forage" "you have increased your skill in foraging..." Just keep hitting your forage button no matter what you are doing. It is one skill that seems to take forever to max, but I'm at 200 now without much difficulty.

It will go up just takes a while to get up there, what i like to do is set a Macro for forage and hit it everytime it resets.
I have an iksar warrior level 22 with around 130 in forage. I also like to use forage in fights which also will increase the skill, you just have to stop attacking forage then engage attack, you could make a macro for that as well but i didnt.

Re: Eating Foraged items
# Jul 16 2001 at 2:51 PM Rating: Decent
The food and drink you consume is taken first from the number one slot in your main equipment slots. If you happen to have a backpack with food and drink there (which is where I keep mine) it will be eaten first.
I try to put anything edible in a second backpack (in slot 2 or higher) if I don't want it eaten/drunk.
*smirk* It's amazing what we Norrathians will eat too...
Eating foraged items
# Jul 16 2001 at 10:23 AM Rating: Default
Ok, so I have foraged a few Thunderhoof Toadstools in the Karanas and I usually sell them to the vendors. But sometimes I eat the toadstools before I make it to a vendor. I have the item in a back pack, which I thought decreased the likelihood of it being eaten (I also have other food in primarly slots). Is there a way to ensure you won't eat your foraged ingredients?
Free food, drink, and... stuff?
# Jul 11 2001 at 9:36 AM Rating: Decent
As a wood elf Ranger, I keep my Forage skill maxxed always. I've only ever purchased water once (and that was to help out a Brewer).
Until recently, I've had packs full of stacks of roots, veggies, berries, fruit, rabbit, pods of water, and fish (okay, so I Fish too). =P
I say recently because I hooked up with a couple brewers that buy my veggies (for vodka) and fruit and berries, though not so much anymore. If you luck out and find a friendly brewer to make such purchases, be fair and undercharge them for the stuff, in return they may give you free drinks that will allow you to improve your Alchohol Tolerance (which lowers the duration you are effected by poisons), I feel that is important for melee'ers the world over, tanks and casters alike.
They are some oddities that I called "stuff" (or 'junk') that you will begin Foraging when you Master your skill (100). Ex.: Firiona Vie Roses, Morning Dew, Chilled Tundra Roots, etc.
Many of these things seem useless but don't toss em out right away. Players will buy them (though some of them may be NO DROP). FV Roses for instance go for 10PP per, on MT. Morning Dew (a Brewing component) goes for a couple plats per or up to 25PP per stack (or so I've seen).
Now all this is "take it or leave it" so use what you can, post what you learn, and pass on what you know.
Good hunting (and Foraging). =P

Foraged Items

I foraged several items i need someone to tell me what they are for, please. They are: Gold nuggets(fools), drench flowers, misty acorns, and rain water. Any info is greatly appreciated.
RE: Foraged Items
# Oct 19 2001 at 4:06 AM Rating: Default
I don't know much about the rest of them, but misty acorns are used to make vale armour (or something with a name like that). Residents of Rivervale can forge a sewing kit in the Rivervale forge and then use Brute hides to make armour. Then the misty acorns mixed with water make stuff you use to make Vale armour. Not sure, I'm still a newbie, but I am a halfling in RV and bought a book about it at a local merchant. If you find a local highlevel tailor there, they sometimes offer to buy them at pretty nice prices
raise skil fast
# Jun 22 2001 at 2:15 AM Rating: Default
anyone that wants to raise forage to 200 real fast should try this, it works really well and can have your forage over 100 in only a few days of playing. Hotkey forage and then link the left and right arrow keys for movement to that hotkey. this can be done under the options and keyboard menu. Each time you turn left or right you will then forage anything nearby and thus raise your skill level drastically fast. Hope this helps. Madin, 33 ranger-Drinal

This technique works really well.
You can use it for other skills too....particulary effective for sense heading.
I gained 25 skill point in sens heading running from Qeynos to FreePort.
RE: raise skil fast
# Jul 02 2001 at 3:58 PM Rating: Default
this sounds like a great idea, but i have found that with my druid the foraging skill is level capped.

no matter how many times i hit my forage hot key, no matter how many times i succeed or fail my forage skill does not increase faster than (level + 1) x 5 ... with a skill cap of 200.

(this info is at eqdruids.com & i have found them to be accurate)

RE: raise skil fast
# Jul 31 2001 at 1:28 AM Rating: Default
Eh, better late than never... From the screen choose "Options" in the upper left hand corner. Then "Keyboard", page around until you find the option you want to assign a "macro" to. You can't directly link forage to a movement key, but you can place your forage button as a hotkey and link that hotkey slot with a movement key.

No, save your skill points for something that's HARD to raise, like some trade skills. Just keep on foraging and it'll go up eventually.

you should also brew.
2 fruit and a water make 5 fruit juice.
It doesnt take long either. You really don't Need to macro either. I always get all 5 points before each level. I play a druid and everytime before I med I forage and while I'm medding I will stop when forage is available again. It wont take long..... the hard part is getting to 30 or so then it gets easy.

Daylight,
yes, there will come a time when you not only will forage enough water and food to keep you alive, but you will be able to share it with others. For me, a woodelf druid, the point where I could live of foraged food alone came around level 10-12, if I remember right. A few levels later, I stopped buying water. The secret is to always hit the Forage button as soon as it becomes available, unless you are in a fight.

Socamx, my Wood Elf Druid, has never bought any food. Only bought water once. I have two macros set up so that everytime I start an attack I automatically forage, sense heading, beg target and then attack. the other is just the abilities w/o attack but adds a /loc.

I began picking up water around level 5.

Just a thought and a question at the same time. I remember reading in another site about how rainwater was supposed to be an ingrediant for some recipes, and that noone had any idea where to get rainwater. Well, has anyone ever foraged rainwater from any of the places where it tends to rain? Just throwing it out there for anyone who's looking for rainwater and can't seem to find any. Good luck and post a reply if you find some.

My skill is 197 and the forage buttons pops back up after about a minute and a half. Hasn't changed since the begining. As my skill went up I noticed less failures. At skill 197 I almost always come up with something. Other than that the only change is when you reach skill 100, when you start foraging all kinds of things you never got before.

Newly foraged items and what we are supposed to do with them
# Apr 07 2001 at 8:49 PM Rating: Default
There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding foraging items above the 100 skill mark and the purpose or use of the newly found loot. Perhaps someone can shed some light on all of the items we are now foraging and what can be done with them, such a Surefall sap. Its bad enough we fill our banks with misc. items we may never need but it would be fun to be able to tease a baker becuase we have an ingrediaent he needs and we have 20 stacked in our packs. Or to be able to sell that special item that the local 50+ wizard needs for that spell he has been researching for the past month. Someone in the know out there?

You want a guide that tells you what everything is for :). Varent doesn't work that way. I've been playing this game for about a year and what I've learned is that they want us to figure things out the hard way. By searching and talking to npc's. I'll bet these web sites irritate the hell out of them.
RE: Newly foraged items and what we are supposed to do with
# Apr 09 2001 at 8:32 PM Rating: Default
Yes, I guess I do want a list that tells me what everything is for but i never expected Verant to supply it to us. I was just hoping that someone such as yourself, with a forage rating of 186+, would have created this list and made it available to us to eliminate the necessity of talking to every single NPC in the game. Or having to go back and talk to them again and again because they now have newly found knowledge that they are now willing to share with me just because i am a better forager.

I enjoy the game very much but I have learned so much through these sites that I feel that the knowledge of Norrath is contained in these electronic tomes, one must know where to look (or who to ask). In the world of Norrath I find I speak to 500% more people in this world on a daily basis than I do in my "real" world and i was just looking for a way that would not require me to talk to even more especially if i have already spoken to them and have learned from them what I thought I need to learn.

In that case, I humbly request, Oh great and scholarly Quiick, to give me some insight that you must have gained in your wordly travels that will help me understand the usages of these wonderous and curious items that find their way into my hands only now after searching for them all my life. Funny, I never noticed Surefall Sap before though I grew up in the Glade :)

You want some insite? Ok, how's this. Pay attention to what people auction for. Ask them what it's for. Dig through the web sites. For instance, I was looking through poison recipes in EQ Traders this morning, trying to find a use for cursed clover of viesar and I came across a recipe which includes succulent sap. I never did find my answer but I'm still looking.

Stuff like surefall sap won't show up till your forage skill reaches 100. That's probably why you never noticed it.
