Foraging

The foraging skill is specific to certain classes and races, allowing them to rustle up food, drink and other odd items.

What are the best strategies to developing and using your foraging skill? Which classes and races should be concentrating on this skill? What items can you find through foraging? How can you best make this skill useful?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the foraging skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

After the VoA patch, I noticed that my skill was 252 in foraging and the max is 408 but both are in red. I was maxed at 250 before, but have been unable to get a skill-up after hours of hitting the button. I'm a ranger and a druid friend reported the same issue. Anyone have a clue?

* Forage: Iksar get Forage at fixed skill of 50 ( - Upgradable to 100 w/AA - ) . They are also able to forage the -special- items that druids/rangers can only forage at skills over 100. This is required for some Iksar quests.

Foraging mods

I have a 57 druid that I use to forage many different tradeskill items with. I have Rk 3 in nature's bounty and decided to get this aa in hopes that it would increase the amount that I double forage. Whether it does or not is debatable, I have not seen a significant change, and I understand this most likely increases the chances of getting "rare" forages. I also have a foraging machette for the extra 10% skill mod. I have finally maxed my base foraging skill to 250, and when equipping the foraging machette, I expected to modify my skill another 25 points, unfortunately I only get 2 points. so at a base foraging skill of 200, I got a modified skill of 220, but at a base skill of 250 I only get a modified skill of 252. It's possible that there's a hard cap per lvl, I'll have to test this and post the results, but I'm guessing I won't be able to get the modified skill of 275 until lvl 80. Can anyone confirm this?

/rant on

My Iksar monk has a racial Foraging skill of 50 with 50 points in that skill. The Foraging AA text in game says that a point in that AA will increase the cap by 50 points for anyone who already has the Foraging skill and will add 50 points of skill. So, I spent 3 AA points on Foraging AA.

My Forage skill is still 50/50. I think I got hosed on the deal. I'm going to assume that since monks don't get Forage as a class skill, the 50 point racial inate skill can't be increased. If that is the case, then Sony needs to reword the description in the Foraging AA text to make that clear.

This is currently being reviewed by the Game Play committee. I'll update this post when a resolution is reached.

As of 9/12/10 iksars buying this get a skill cap of 100. You still have to raise it normally from 50, but it does increase the cap now.

Ok, I've got a stupid question that's probably been answered (most likely with a 'no') before, but I just want to know... I have a foraging skill of 200, and the Nature's Bounty (forage two items) at level 3. Bored out of my mind one day, I did the Foraging Machette quest. What I want to know is: Will the extra 20 skill increase the chance of foraging a second item?

It just occurred to me that while some races have the innate ability to forage, vah shir can't. Does this seem a bit skewed to anyone else? I mean, my cat will forage in my trash can for a piece of chicken the size of a dime hidden in a tea bag.

Only Rangers, Druids, and Bards have the ability to go above 50 in foraging. Wood elves and Iksars have an innate ability to forage and get that ability at level 1 and it is capped at 50. It will never go above 50.

Can we improve the Forage skill?
# Jan 09 2005 at 4:49 AM Rating: Good
I would like to gripe about Forage. I have maxed my forage skill out yet I can not control my foraging. Why on earth would I even notice a root laying on the ground if I am looking for Water!!!??? Maybe a benefit of maxing out your forage skill should be that you can choose what youre looking for in the zone and have a higher probability of finding it, more so then you would now with the random forage. I know what I am looking for. I know what it looks like. Why would I pick up something else??? This is not specific for Rangers but all foragers. A master foragers skill is just not realistic. So maybe out of 10 forage attempts I would normally get 5 water, 3 roots and one specialty item. Well if forage were selective then out of 10 attempts I could get say 3 specialty items. I got fewer total items but more of what I was looking for in the first place. Thats realistic!

I have found throuh every single outdoor zone I've gone through I can forage something unique. In GFay I foraged Morning Dew and Cinnoman Sticks, In the plains the Plains Pebbles, In Everfrost something like Iced Turnups(don't take me on this not sure), and even in Erudites Crossing I foraged something can't remember what. I have asked around and found out that these can sell from 5pp to 50pp each(50pp on rare occasion with Morning Dew really around 40) in bazarr now if I only had that expansion. Well anyway I think someone should make a guide to what you can forage in what zone also anyone else know what you can forage in what zone? Thanks

What I did to get forage up was, using the new setup set it so that whenever I hit the right arrow button I would automatically attempt to use forage(Sence Heading was set to the left)

To do this go to Optionz> Keyboard then in the dragdown menue select "Macro". Set Hotkey 0 to left and Hotkey 9 to right. Then in all the hotkey windows you use put forge and sence heading into the 9 and 0 slots. You will be mast in both skills before you know it

Yeah, I guess they removed the cap on racial abilities, because my Wood-Elf Ranger has foraging up to a skill of 100. Either Verant changed the racial caps or some of you are mistaken in your thoughts that these skills cap and need to work on your skills more.

Actually, the reason you can increase your foraging is because it is a class skill for Rangers. If the character were a Wood Elf Warrior the skill would be capped since Warriors do not learn to forage.

I haven't seen any solutions yet, but there are trhe following clues:

Clicking on the Dragon Globes in Skyfire stops them from spinning.

There are "chests" that appear in the zone near the dragon statues. They will turn 90 degrees if you click on them.

Book of the Immortals (or some book that drops in SF) talks about "breathing life into their husks".

Oh well, its a puzzle. May just be a broken quest =).

I love this skill.. at first just because of the money it saved me at early levels, now because of the neat stuff I find.. and like all skill the best way to improve it is keep using it, so make a button for it, and click on it every time it pops up again.
There's two times you can't use it.. in combat and when sitting.. so if yer medding it takes about a second to stand (ctrl+s) forage (hit number for button) and go back to meditating (ctrl+b), and if you're in combat.. it takes about a second to turn off autoattack, forage, and turn autoattack back on. =)

Uhhhh...yes. I am sure because I have seen my skill advance while in combat and medding. I have foraging set to my right arrow key so it gets pushed constantly and it DOES increase your skill. If you don't care about getting items as much as skill lvl (and you shouldn't at low lvls with the low success rate), map it to a key you push a lot.

Ya, i do map forage to my right turn key, thats how my skill is maxed. But how do you in crease skill when the message says you can't try to forage while sitting or in combat. You need to actually attempt the skill to increase skill, doesn't matter whether you succeed or fail. If what you say is true, why not apply to other skills, say alchemy for example. Attempt to combine items that will not combine, watch your skill go up, get the components back and waste no plat on failures. I wish i would have thought of that before i spent about 150pp to make my first 10 shot sow potion.

I know this helps you not at all but just thought i'd let you know that you aren't the only one that has the "to destroy or not destroy" dilemma when you start running outta inventory/bank space. Perhaps Verant put those items with the possibility for creating future quests involving them...that's my hope but I'm not going to hold onto 152 unstackable Vineclinger Berries while waiting for them to get around to it. Let me make the quest or whatever use there is (ever will be??) for them and i'll re-forage em then. I get em all the time anywayz.

I think you mean a branch of sylvan oak (there is also a branch of planar oak). It is used for fletching, but mainly above skill 200. You can make items via cultural woodelf fletching with which you will need the sylvan oak. Like: you need to make a reinforced sylvan branch to make a Blessed Faydark Swiftbolt (bow). For the reinforced sylvan branch you'll need the sylvan oak (trivial <195).

# Dec 04 2001 at 8:39 AM Rating: Excellent
For all of you who wish to raise this skill quickly, here is what you do:

1. Go to options.
2. Go to keyboard.
3. Click next until you find the userdefined buttons.
4. Go to the userdefined that your forage hotkey is on. (Upper left being 1, lower right being 0.)
5. Left click on that userdefined, and press left.
6. Exit options

There, now every time you turn left and your forage key is not greyed out, you will forage. That way you will always forage, and once your skill rises high enough, you will never run out of food or water.

What i have done to help remember to raise my Forage (and sense Heading) skills is to macro it. got to "social" open a new box, i labaled mine "attack". on the first line put /doability1 on the second line put /doability2 etc... on the last line put /attack. you will now do the first, second, etc ability under your "abilities" menu just before you attack. Note: you have to do the abilities before you attack or you get the "you cant do that while attacking" message.

I don't know what you all are talking about never getting rares. I constantly do, that may just be because my skill is about 160 though, and I'm only lvl 30. I'v found that I maxed out fairly quickly simply by always using it, and I mean ALWAYS. Whenever possible I forage. Right now I have about 60 stacks of food and water and can't seem to get rid of it fast enough.

Yes it takes forever to level this skill. I have a Forage Skill over 160 and it comes in handy when running all over the place doing quests or just going to a new place to hunt. Right now I do not have to ever buy food again and people that make items with cooking skill pay very good money for stacks of some of the items.

The only real problem I have right now is what is Verant thinking when they combined the Fishing and Forage Skill togethers??? I mean come on sitting in the middle of ice and I Forage up Fish? What were they thinking?

Perhaps someone left the fish on the ice while ice fishing. I have noticed this also. I have foraged kedge carp while running around in Thurgadin. What, are the coldain leaving dead fish laying around their great city? I also foraged a pod of water while swimming in the Ocean of Tears. Thats weird for a few different reasons. First, it's obvious, I'm in a big sea of water. I should be succesful every single time, right? Wait, isn't an ocean made up of salt water. I must be the greatest forager of all time, I found a pockect of fresh, drinkable water in a sea of salt water.

I'm not complaining, these are just observations I've made. I've foraged rabbit meat while swimming in the ocean also. I foraged an entire seafood feast while pulling snow cougars in Iceclad. Artic shrimp, mussels, artic king crab, scallops, you name it. It's there. I get hungry everytime I am in Iceclad.

Safe Questing!

I have my own theory about this.

I think there is a list of possible foraged items for each zone in the format basics + special. Basics are things like Pod of Water, Foraged Vegetables, and Roots, that can be foraged, to my knowledge, in any zone. (Even Blackburrow and inside the House of Unrest.) I think what the game mechanics do is (as analogy) roll two dice. The first determines whether or not you are successful (trivial goes up with skill). The second determines what you forage up. IE, you get a Pod of Water, you get a fish, you get a Ripened Heart Fruit, etc.

As far as I can tell, this second, "what you get" dice does not care if you are underwater, on a boat, in someone's house, or on the toilet. It just rolls and what you get is what you get. I haven't seen anything in anyzone that can be foraged only in one specific part of the zone, but I'm sure for the specials there are excpetions to this.

Now for the BIG question. How come a rat's ear sells to a vendor for 2sp 4 cp, and a gold nugget is worthless?? *boggle*

lol because the gold nugget was fool's gold, there are two kinds that are named the same but one identifies as fool's gold and will not sell to vendor. It is used for shackle of bronze (or copper can't remember) quest.

I have gained points by practicing. But it is slow. Very slow. Have also begun to use my training points to up the skill. Have gained nomore that 2 points in 2 hours by hiting the button. Maybe its a hourly skill increase thing. I have heard that they have put a block on howmeny point you can gain at one time in some skills.

I foraged a Sweetened Mudroot in Misty Thicket. It is Magic/Lore/NoDrop. It is also Ranger/Druid only. Anyone know what it is used for? My character is only lvl 8 and forage was around 25 when I got this. I have gotten it a couple of times but of course only get to keep one (Duplicate Lore Items not allowed.). Any help is appreciated.

The is because druids get foraging as a skill. For them it caps at 200. Warriors do not generally get forage, but wood elves have it as a racial ability. Which means it caps at 50. That is why.

I have been practicing forage at every opportunity and I just don't seem to be gaining at all! I have a wood elf druid ranked at "good" for foraging. Once you reach a certain point do things become *trivial* or something?

Thanks

just a little tip from a druid. what i did was out the forage and walk buttons on the same button, that way when youare running around you also forage. and another side note, no foraging does triv out.

The foraging skill is the same as all the other skills and are lvl capped. When you go up in lvl so will your forage skill if you use it alot. Have you noticed that when you lvl up you will almost always get skill points in something like evocation or some other skill right after you lvl?

Hate to break it to you, but you can forage daggers in Shadeweaver's Thicket on Luclin. Called umm.. like stone phalangees or something like that. They are 3 23 piercing. Not too impressive, and they don't stack. I've been getting all sorts of lore no drop forages on Luclin, including a piece of wood (no stats) that can be worn on the neck. No idea what any of these no drop lore forages are for, but would appreciate input.

I was hunting on the orge island in TD the other day, and foraged "something that doesn't look edible", a Timorous coconut. So I thought to myself, "What's this used for?" After that, I was killing an orge raider and decided to see just how good that coconut was. So I banged it on the ogre's head making a fine mark on the left side of his head.
Now I'm wondering, what else is this Timorous coconut used for?

I waited until about level 30 to start working on my forage skill- I just foraged when it said I was hungrey until I got a stack of food lol. Then I was told I could dig up gold..... The rest is history! My skill is 195 and getting better every day or every couple of days still.

Its very easy to get forage up- just keep plugging away at it- make a hotbutton and use it.

I dont keep my hotbutton menu visible, but I still have a hotbutton, I just press 1 every couple of minutes- its a Habit now! Before it became a habit though I simply pressed Forage before and after every battle and every time I saw the grey box come free while medding. Running is a great place for it, you can click Forage, then sense heading over and over until Forage comes back up ;p sure makes the Boat a hell of a lot more fun (how Did I dig up that pod of fresh water from the salty sea...)

Sadly, even with such a high skill.. I almost Never fail but I STILL DIG UP FISHING GRUBS! on a regular basis ;p I dont even fish with a pole, I jump in the water and kill them with my bare hands .... hahahah

how to rase your skill
# Aug 10 2001 at 6:15 PM Rating: Default
This skill is one that is easy to forget about till you get a reminder " you are low on food. you are low on water" well if you wait for these reminders it will take forever to raise you skill. so here is a littel habbit I used to remind me to forage.

1) before and after each battle I forage. this alone has kept my skill up.
Other ideas are;
2 when I med
3 Every time I zone I try to forage.
4 When I buy and sale I forage.

you may over look thsi skill but it is a vital one. If you want to get your epic weapon you best max it out.

to the level 9 warrior:
You are most likely a wood elf, and wood elves have forage at 50 from the start. Next time you level you will get forage to go up. For you the skill cap is 50 atm (9x5+5=50) So... just keep lvling =)
