Tailoring

The tailor is able to make his own clothes and cloth-based armor and items, both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for using and developing the tailoring skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? What classes are best suited to tailoring? What cities are the best places to practice your trade? Can you make a profit off of tailoring, and if so how?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the tailoring skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Try East Commons. I made good money by hunting bears and lions and selling their pelts off to tailors at the tunnel that stand there are all day and shout auctions that they want to buy Pelts.

So you can do two things, you can hunt which is cheaper but more time consuming or just stand at the tunnel and auction to buy. On Tunare HQ Bear pelts go for 35pp, HQ Cat go for 5-10pp, and all LQ and MQ's go for 1-5pp each.

There are also plenty of spiders around so it's a great place for tailors.

I suggest that you do not pursue tailoring. You are a warrior, so a more useful skill for you is Blacksmithing. Being a tank, that would be a more useful skill. With it, you can create Chainmail and Platemail armor, which would be much more useful than what you can make with tailoring, which is armor for monks and pure casters

MOST BEARS DROP HQ PELTS, NOTES EXCEPTION IS THE KODIAKS, GRIZZLEYS HAVE EVEN DROPPED ONE FOR ME. BUT IF YOU TALK IN CAPS ALL THE TIME YOU WILL SCARE THE BEARS AWAY, THUS LOWERING THE QWALITY OF THE PELTS DUE TO THE STRESSES CAUSED.

Fleeting Quivers? Hate to miss, takes 2 saphires to make the mana. At 105pp each. Can get costly quick and the jump from 158 to 220 is big.

IMO Halas is one of the best cities to begin tailoring in all of Norrath. It's newbie zone of Everfrost Peaks has an unending stream of wolves and bears for ruined pelts, and sometimes LQ or better (yes even HQ bear pelts). Not only that, but there are also the woolly spiders that drop spiderling silk, and larger spiders out in the plains of Everfrost that drop regular silk. With the combination of items availible in and around Halas, it is a great place to tailor.

Can i put 95 skill pts into tailoring at one time?
# Jul 15 2001 at 6:18 AM Rating: Default
I have 95 SkillPoints saved up from the guild trainer (will probably be more as i level). I want to make Cured Silk Armor or even Wu's armor for my monk friend, but i don't want to spend time searching for pelts and making stud. My question is: Can i raise my TailorSkill to 26 by making Silk Cord then put all 95 skill pts into tailoring through the guild trainer at one time?

Thank you for replying :)
RE: Can i put 95 skill pts into tailoring at one time?
# Jul 31 2001 at 3:09 PM Rating: Decent
What I think everyone means (but isn't quite saying) is that you can't use guild skill points to raise trade skills past a skill level of 20 (or is it 21 . . .). If you have NO tailoring skill, you can put 20/21 points into it. If you have a tailoring skill of 26 you can't put ANY points into it, and you'll get the message that was described earlier ("You must learn advanced trade skills in this field" or something to that effect). Hope that clears things up a little.
RE: Can i put 95 skill pts into tailoring at one time?
# Jul 21 2001 at 12:29 PM Rating: Decent
The maximum number of points allowed to be trained into any trade skill is 20 or 21, not sure on this for i have around 50 skill in tailoring, but i know that it is something like that, an inconvienance, but put them into other required trade skills. Tailoring will require smithing and brewing as well, so why not put em into that and then into your weapon skills. Hope this helps, and BTW good hunting zones for pelts is NRO, Oasis and SRo. Also if ya wanna go directly from swatches to raw silk as an iksar that is totally possible, hope this helps. Good luck young ones!

I've started a new character just to be a tailor and was only able to put 20 skill points in to it. After that it said advanced skills must be learned in the field =(.

RE: Skinning Knife

Actually you can make the entire skinning knife on the west side of the world. You'll need a small BRICK of Ore, Dagger Mold, Hilt Mold, and Water Flask.. The Brick you can get in Erud.. from Shauna Orefinder by their blacksmith. The hilt mold you can buy in West Karana from a man named Skinner ( i think that's his name), the dagger mold can be purchases from McPherson's Bloody Blades in Halas. And the water flask ? Well I dont' know where to get those :-D

Is there a web that has all the tailoring receipts?
Especially those with magical attributes?

I am a gnome mage and since I could not find any magical tailoring receipts, all I found useful is some raw silk sets of wearings eg. sleevs, caps etc and they are all about trivial lvl 36. I don't know if i should really practice this skills or just ask someone else to help me.

How to raise tailoring without burning practice points?
# Jul 09 2001 at 11:21 PM Rating: Default
I was just wondering if there is any way to raise tailoring up form 0 points without putting any practice points into it. In other words, is there anyway to raise tailoring by simply doing the skill? Do you gain points even if you fail in it? Sorry if I may sound dumb to some of you EQ veterans, but I assure you, I am no idiot, just new :) Thanks in advance.
RE: How to raise tailoring without burning practice points?
# Aug 02 2001 at 1:38 PM Rating: Decent
Actually yes....all you have to do is combine spiderling silk into silk thread by placing two into you sewing kit and hitting combine. The same for spider silk to make silk swatches. These recipes will raise your tailoring and it is impossible to fail so you dont lose anything. You can get your tailoring up to around 16 doing this alone. Hope it helps.

yes you can raise your skill from zero by just attempting, but it will take a long time to reach lvl 1. Id reccomend just "wasting" 1 0r 2 points of training, will save you alot of spider silks)

I believ all you have to do is put 1 practice point in and the rest can be done by hand. Practice points will only get you up to 21 anyway.

Good luck

Is there an accepted price for the various compenents required for Tailoring? If not, I thought I'd get the ball rolling and list the prices I've been paying for stuff (on Solusek Ro)...
HQ wolf or cat pelt 2-3pp
HQ bear pelt 30-35pp
Silk Swatch 50pp per stack of 20
Heady Kiola 1pp (till I could brew my own)

Im at the stage in my tailoring career that I am now in need of crystalline silks. I am too high a level to get xp from killing those spiders, so I'd rather just by the silks. Does anyone know what the going price for them is? And where the best place to find someone selling them?

# Jul 04 2001 at 9:00 AM Rating: Decent
You need to put the bottle, water and saps in a brew barrel to brew Heady Kiolas and it doesn't trivial till about level 46 BREWING skill. Once you've successfully brewed the Heady Kiolas you put them in your sewing kit with the silk dswatches and pattern.

If you don't have any brewing skill your best bet is to find someone who does and buy the kiolas from them. I think they go for about 1pp each.

Brewing is quite easy and fun to do though. Check the Brewing lists or eqtraders.com for info.

Failure rate is still quite high even when making Heady Kiola is 'trivial'. I have much better success after learning another couple of drinks to trivial and raising my skill into the 60s.

When I try to make vale studded leather ( halfling cultural armor made with Brute hides and studs)in the Vale sewing kit using the Leathers of the Vale book formulas (purchased in Rivervale from npc merchant) I get a fails to combine. Reinforced formulas made with high quality Brute hides and boning apparently work. Does anyone know if the vale studded leather is bugged or are the formulas in the book false?

Does anyone know of a way to raise skill in tailoring post wu's fighting armor besides attempting the really high velious tailoring items (wyrven, cobalt drake hide etc.) i have recently had my last piece of wu's trivial (trivial at 158) and dread trying to raise skill by making the higher lvl velious armors because the materials are hard to collect and the trivial is almost 100 skill higher than what i currently have. If there is a way please let me know, otherwise let me know what you believe is the eastest of the ultra high trivial armor from velious to raise skill on.

Also, if your looking for a good website on tailoring, the best i have found is

if you have a better one, please post it.

Nope, pelts and silks are not normally sold by vendors. The only time you'll run across them is if another player has sold there to loot to that merchant.
