Tailoring

The tailor is able to make his own clothes and cloth-based armor and items, both for personal use and for sale to others.

What are the best strategies for using and developing the tailoring skill? Which recipes are the most and least useful? What classes are best suited to tailoring? What cities are the best places to practice your trade? Can you make a profit off of tailoring, and if so how?

Post your strategies on how to best use and develop the tailoring skill, and read, rate and comment on those posted by others.

Velious Tailoring

I have a tailoring skill of 142 now. I'm pushing my way through these hard points only to someday make "Reinforced Cobalt Drake Hide Armor" for myself. This is a Velious Tailoring addition. For this armor most sites state the trivial level is greater than 250. Well, I fail 30% of the time with Trivialized items anyway. & By the looks of things this armor will not be cheap (+$$+). Has anyone successfully sewn a set of this armor? Can anyone tell me if it's worth the wait, time, $$ & effort. For a mid level character - I'm flat broke all because of tailoring & this armor will brake the bank for good if things go as well as they have in the past. I just want opinions. If anyones made Velious Armor - I'd appreciate any & all information possible (what skill lvl? how much time & money? how often did you fail?) Thanks for your time.

I have a success rate of about 8% currently on all velious tailored items with a skill level in the mid 160s. I have spent greater than 6k plat for the 100 attempts that I have made and about 100 hours gathering components. This does not include the time that my fellow guildmates have spent gathering materials for me as well. In all the time we have spent in CS killing wyverns we have received over 150 hides but with over 20 drakes killed now, I have only seen 1 hide drop. The cobalt drake hide is a very rare drop. I am saving the one I have and any further one's that I manage to obtain until I can make 20 attempts all at once so as to have a decent chance of making just one belt. By the time you can succesfully make most of this stuff on a greater percentage chance, you will most likely have better gear in almost every slot. Tailoring is a skill that requires an immense amount of time and money to attain the highest levels of mastery and in the end does not pay for itself unless you are very lucky. With all that said, I am still a tailoring addict and will continue to tailor until my skill is maxed out at 200 since I specialized in JC. I have also made another character to specialize in tailoring. I guess I am insane to take to characters to 200 in tailoring but hey it's fun and one heck of a challenge.

Yew leaf
# Nov 27 2001 at 12:20 AM Rating: Decent
this is an item used to make panther hide for monks. I had a friend show me where to find them, what they look like etc. for the first time. We were grped and in 10 mins I nvr saw one and he had a full stack(wakening Lands). He sells them for a stack at a high value.

He just says he has a new Gforce3 64 meg video card, thats why he sees them. I think hes an ***.

Can anyone help me with clues on how to find these leaves? if it truly is a Video card problem. I have a Gforce2 32 meg, with 1gig myself. I searched the ground for 10 hrs 4 days straight and only came across 1.

Appriciate all input.

First off, yew leaves can be foraged now by foraging classes/races so you might have some luck there.

Second, there are some maps that purport to show yew leaf spawn locations: search around the net. The one I remember seeing had them distributed in a rough, thick circle. Also, some people say that successful yew leaf foragers are running Show EQ utility on a second rig to help direct them to the exact loc of each leaf. Of course, Show EQ is illegal and running it can get you banned from EQ.

But, I have heard people say that tweaking your video settings and running with a pan/scan downwards to the ground can really help. Have you ever seen a ground spawn before? They look rather like lighter/brighter green diamonds against the ground. Once you know WHAT to look for and experiment with tweaking your settings to see these things, maybe you'll have better luck. I have had a lot of success finding groundspawns in many different zones, so I have a jump on others who haven't been looking as long.

And maybe you can find something for which your monk friend would trade that stack of yew leaves! Good luck!

Sorry I sell them for 50pp on Vallon Zek.
I haven't had an arguement yet about the price.
Also a good zone to get the HQ Cat pelts is EK.
I summon a pet and just let him run wild, but that will depend on your class.
Sorry about the second reply.

Bit late now, but in case you scan this far back, HQ cat pelts (not lion skins) can be used for making Reinforced Leather Armour, using one skin, various numbers of steel boning and a pattern.

are you nuts?!?! 50pp for a hq cat pelt. Thats's outrageous I have a few stacks of them in the bank, they sell for 2pp to 5pp depending on who is buying them. I mean c'mon I buy most of them from merchants for just over a gold. They are way more common than HQ bear pelts and the bear pelts go for around 20pp. Vazaelle is cheaper than other servers but that price is far too high.

The Zek servers are a whole different world. PvP makes for some interesting changes in economy as some things we take for granted on blue servers are completely inaccesible to one team or the other. I do agree that 50 pp is a bit much even for a Zek server :)

Just do a bit of research before posting questions there though as some people can be a bit snippy when the same question has been asked within the last month or so. Im looking for 8 deluxe seweing kits to make more room for myself in the bank (at least till im high enough to make 10 slot bags), but where are these sold? i figured at any old merchant that sold the extra tailoring patterns, but all i could find were "Large sewing kits", which of course are only 8 slots.

?

As stated deluxe sewing kits are no longer available. However the pirates in iceclad sell deluxe toolboxes that are great for the bank. They are 10 slot, and can hold giant sized items. They are also resonably priced, ( about 2 or 3 pp) as I recall.

I copied the following from lokari's tailoring guide -- by far the best reference on the subject.
http://www.lokari.net/everquest/tailoring_supplies.html

"Deluxe Sewing Kits
Deluxe sewing kits are not available for purchase at any merchant. These ten slot kits came into existence with a series of patches in May 2001 - at one point, all large sewing kits were changed from having eight slots to having ten. This meant that if you already owned a large sewing kit, it became a ten slot kit automatically. Large sewing kits purchased during this time also had ten slots. However, in a later patch the large sewing kits were changed back to the eight slot variety. Any existing ten slot large sewing kit that characters owned were renamed to Deluxe Sewing Kits, and stayed in the ten slot configuration. If you are fortunate enough to have one of the Deluxe sewing kits, I recommend that you hang on to it."

As you can see, delux sewing kits are only availible from other players.

I have one. I use it in the bank. No recipe I know of that requires a 10 slot deluxe sewing kit. It is fairly heavy. Large pouches are lighter for carrying even though they are only 6 slot. I just leave a few open inventory slots for the few items I get that won't fit in the large bags. For the right price I might consider parting with it. I am not a tailor anyway.

silk gathering
# Nov 08 2001 at 10:31 AM Rating: Decent
yeah... ok i am a newbie tailor and am wondering where THE best place to gather silk is at. my skill is 27 and pathwork is trivial but i can't get silk other than one or two here and there. I romed around West Karana for 2 hours and only found 2 spiders yielding an average amount of 1 piece of silk per spider. This IS A WASTE OF TIME. So where can a level 12 charater get silk???????
RE: silk gathering
# Jan 04 2002 at 12:41 PM Rating: Good
Misty Thicket is also full of spiderlings and giant spiders. The big ones can poison you, but at level 12 that shouldn't be a problem. The giant spiders are one of the highest level creatures in Misty Thicket, so you would be relatively safe while you hunted for silks. I usually get multiple silks per kill.

Also, be sure and check shops near spider areas, you can often get several silks for a few silver each (worth your time, probably!)

I spend a lot of time in the (sp) Toxuulia Forest at the entrance to Erudin. There is a TON of spider and spiderlings here. Not terrorantulas though.

I hope this helps you and is the kind of silk you seek. I've been getting approximately two silks per spider and one per spiderling.

At level 12 that's about the best you can do. At level 16-21 take a group to EK and hunt crag spiders. They are about level 20 but have a real nasty poison. They drop between 6 and 8 silks per spider. Carrion spiders are around level 15 there but do not always drop silk. When they do its usually on one or two.

huge gap
# Nov 06 2001 at 5:52 PM Rating: Default
ok i am really thinking that there is a recipe involving the panda pelts in stonebrunt mountains for the huge gap between wu's(158) and the crystalline silk(131). I have a couple of stacks and have been trying everything i can think of to get something out of them but so far no luck. I was almost thinking that it might have something to do with erudite cultural tailoring but with my erud wizard have had no success even with the erudite tailoring kit. I put a posting up bout a month ago bout the pelts with no reply. If someone has any info for me bout them plz reply for i have capped out at 131 and would like to at least get use of these pelts while they may still bring up my skill and so i dont waste GLS's(they seem to be a pain) thanks

Wu's Fighting armor has different trivial levels depending on the piece. Since only the gauntlets require a greater lightstone, all you'll need is some brewing skill (heady kiola is trivial at 46), a helpful enchanter (12th level or higher) and a LOT of spider silk.

Try making Wu's:

*Mask or bracer (trivial at 135)
*Cap (trivial at 142)
*Mantle (trivial at 144)
**Sleeves (trivial at 151)
***Leggings (trivial at 155)
***Tunic (trivial at 158)

The *'s indicate the number of silk swatches to combine with a vial of viscous mana (from the enchanter), the appropriate pattern, and 4 heady kiolas that you brewed.

Before you start on this great skill id recommend being at least a lvl 50 in brewing and black smithing if not studs, steel boning and heady kiolas will be veeerrrrryy hard to come by unless u got a friend that is willing to put alot of time into your skill =)

Trivials:
Swatch lvl 17
Patchwork lvl 26
Raw Silk lvl 39
Studded lvl 57
Cured Silk lvl 82
Wu's Gauntlets lvl 88
10 Slot Backpacks lvl 88
Reiforced armour lvl 108
Quiver lvl 115

Recipies: (never stack items that r the same)

Swatch= 2 Spider Silks
(u will use swatches alot so dont lose em)

Patchwork= a ruined pelt+ pattern

Raw Silk= 1 swatch+ all patterns except...
= 2 swatches+ (tunic,legs) pattern

Studded=Medium Quality pelt+ pattern+ #of studs
belt pattern+ 2 studs
boot+ 4 studs
bracer+ 2 studs
cap+ 3 studs
cloak+ 4 studs
glove+ 4 studs
gorget+ 2 studs
mask+ 1 stud
pants+ 4 studs
shoulder+ 3 studs
sleeve+ 3 studs
tunic (Gi)+ 5 studs

Cured silk=pattern+ #heady kiolas+ #swatches
belt pattern+ 2HK+ 1swatch
boot+ 2HK+ 1swatch
bracer+ 2HK+ 1swatch
cap+ 3HK+ 1swatch

mask+ 1HK+ 1swatch
pants+ 3HK+ 2swatches
shoulder+ 2HK+ 2swatches
sleeve+ 2HK+ 2swatches
tunic+ 2HK+ 3swatches

Wu's Gauntlets= 4 heady kiolas
1 greater light stone
1 vial or visous mana
1 swatch
1 glove pattern

10 Slot Backpack= 1 high quality(HQ) bear pelt
1 backpack pattern

Reinforced= HQ pelt+ pattern+ # steel boning
1SB+ patterns: gorget, mask, bracer
2SB+ patterns: belt, cap, shoulder, cloak,
sleeve, glove
3SB+ patterns: boot, pants
4SB+ pattern: tunic

Quiver= HQ cat pelt+ quiver pattern

Now if you are looking for the quickest way possible to become really good at tailoring then here's how i did it.

First start by making swatches make as many as u can and keep em all, if you're high enough lvl east karana has got alot of spiders carrying about 2 to 6 silks each. Continue until they are trivial (do not use spiderling silk they r not the same).

Then go to patchwork until it is trivial. Then on to Raw silk but try to make things that only use 1 swatch, again until trivial.

For studded armour you either need to be at least a lvl 45 blacksmith or have a friend that is willing to put in the time to make you studs but it would be much easier(and cheeper) to do it yourself. As for the medium quality pelts if you are going to buy them id recommend not spending any more than 20pp on each but even that is a little high(as a rule wolf pelts are cheepest but hard to come by cat pelts are next hunt for them in the commons and bear pelts are the most expensive).

Cured silk armour is made especially for monks so i got alot of tells from young monks that want a body suit of cured armour but again if u just want to advance id recommend just making masks and selling em to vendors, they use the least swatches and heady kiolas. Heady kiolas are made by brewers again if u perfer to be your own brewer u gotta be at least a lvl 50 brewer(you can find brewing and smithing recipies on this site or at castersrealm.com).

Wu's gauntlets are hard to find all the ingrediants for sometimes if you've done what iv done you can make the heady kiolas, and the swatch, also the pattern you can buy in any shop.
greater light stones u can get on any willow wisp from freeport to qeynos. The vial of visous mana is the hardest to get you gotta get a certain vial im sorry i dont remember what it is and get an enchanter to enchant it, you require at least a lvl 30 enchanter for this. As with the cured silk, these gauntlets are only for monks to use so if ur not a monk dont worry about it.

Now here is the big pay off 10 slot backpacks create alot more room in your inventory and your bank and they sell for 100pp a piece. buying high quality bear pelts is not a tough thing to get into but u just gotta know where to go iv tryed hunting for them but in my whole carrear of playing everquest iv only ever killed 3 bears that dropped one so i recommend just buying them from newbies believe it or not they come by them all the time my favorite place to get them is in everfrost, however other hot spots include, east and west commons and in some places in the karanas(mostly north karana). One thing to remember when buying HQ bear pelts never ever pay more than 25pp a piece if you do you are just getting ripped off usually i offer about 10pp to characters under 10 just because they have never seen that much hehehe and the price goes up from there most of the pelts iv bought though have been about 20pp that is a good price considering the finished product sells for 5 times that.

Reinforced armour iv used as just a way of increasing my tailoring lvl so i can succeed more at making backpacks. Again for the steel boning you need to be or at least know a black smith over the lvl of 50. HQ pelts are the same you can use wolf, cat, or bear what ever u can come across i mostly use cat for reinforced though because as iv said before wolf is hard to come by and bear is used for backpacks.

Quivers again are just used to get you higher in skill lvl this should bring you about to lvl 115 and that is all the info iv got at the moment i dont even think you can get any higher yet.

Adding my own 2cp's....
Dont waste your training points in tailoring. Get your starting points by combining silks. I dont think they ever fail and you're going to need them anyway. Go ahead and make the silk threads from spiderling silks. Just dont confuse them with the silks from spiders. Some of your more advanced smiths need the leather padding made from them in order to make their plate armors, which can help finance some of your early tailoring.

To make the mana vials, you need a poison vial (not the sealed or lined, just a regular one) and a pearl. The enchanter spell to make them is ThickenMana. For an enchanter to have this spell, they need to buy them at the brownie camp in LFay. Since that's kind of a task unto itself, not all enchanters bother getting this line of spells.

For post 115 work, it's time to run up to the crystal caverns in velius and kill spiders in there. They drop cystalline silks which make crystalline silk armor that'll get you up to 131. Then you'll need more of those mana vials, heady kiolas, and silk swatches to start making Wu's. Wu's will get you all the way up to 158.

Best place to get more info on tailoring would be www.eqtraders.com

Has anyone ever heard of leather paddings? I have created 2, but I cannot remember how I did it. I havent read anything about them in any tailoring guide. Can anyone tell me what use they have?

Tnx

For all your tradeskill needs EQTraders is the place.

silk thread + low quality cat/bear/wolf skin -> leather padding

Trivial 31, but still fails around 25% of the time at trivial.

As far as anyone in the eqtraders.com site is aware there is no other recipe between Wu's at 158 trivial and the fleeting quiver at 220

It is too easy to do any trade skill.

1. Since you know where to go to get the recipes...print them out. I usually copy the page and paste into Excel so I can sort things into trivial order and save for backups and my own findings.
2. Once online look for lowest trivial and gather those items (spiderlings silks from spiderlings) including the container it requires (a sewing kit). As your notes will tell you for tailoring, combine spiderling silks til trivial. And move down the list as they all turn trivial.

Eqtraders has written their site information like Military Manuals...at a 3rd grade level. Its not as hard as it seems, gathering the items is the only hard part.

A really good site for anyone interested in tailoring is:

http://www.lokari.net/everquest/tailoring.html

Not many bells and whistles, but very good information and very well organized.
