test server

I tried logging into the test server today to play and when it started patching, it was downloading all the eq files right onto the desktop, with a 10hour est. remaining time to download ALL files. I used the testeverquest.exe to login, am I doing something wrong or is it supposed to do this?

Anybody play here?
# Oct 23 2004 at 11:10 AM Rating: Decent
Well I just logged on the test server and saw that the population was low. I typed who all warrior and only saw like 12 or something like that. So does no one play here then?

Since EQ2/WoW came out Test is pretty dead for anyone not 60-70 did a /who all 10 20, 20 30 etc came up with average 10 peeps then got to 60 70 and request was cut short, so there is some playing, however Test is not a place to start atm.

If I was gonna start again I would do FV, went there with a noob warrior and the peeps seemed nice/helpful to others at least in the chat i saw.

Test is the place to be if you can play with a friend(s) as most everything unkeyed is wide open now that the ubers have moved on :))

I tried this a few times. I was a orc in G Fay, Firebeetle in North Qeynos that I recall. It was fun attacking PC's :-)
New Tester has question
# Mar 22 2004 at 10:56 AM Rating: Decent
Hi,if anyone reads this :)

I left the game for a few years to play Anarchy Online, and TestServer is my home there. I decided I needed some diversity so I reactivated my EQ account and started a character on EQTest

AO has a dedicated TS webforum to discuss issues and bugs, does EQ have something similer? (other than this one?)

I had a question on the current build and the fact I cannot get my sky to show up, I was wondering if the engine is being worked on, which is why the sky is not working,or if its an issue with my graphics card and DX9

Thanks in advance!

It saddens me to see so few posts for Test server. It makes the place seem barren to these forum users...

I encourage other Test players to get on here and give Allakhazam's readers your two copper pieces worth!

I've put some new posts below in response to the few "recent" posts that there have been. So if you're interested, read on!

oh ya...can I make myself lvl 65? And then turn myself into one of them big blue cubes...that looks like jello?, and make my name Wizzyoz? Cause if i could, i'd be like "ARGGGGGGGGGGGGH!!!!! I am The Wizard of Oz!!! I am a BIG blue cube of Jello...AND I JIGGLE!! I AM THE JIGGLY BLUE JELLO!!"

wow...

*Removes six year olds brain and morphs back into an adult*

Sorry about that...But no, really, can i make myself high lvl, and turn myself into skellys an stuff?

Thank you all!!

Umm... No, no, maybe (if it’s not in use), sort-of, and not really.

There, I think that get is. =P

Seriously though, you can go straight from lvl 1 to lvl 25, and get a full armament of equipment, by issuing the slash testbuff command.

I cant get on EQ right now but what exactly is the test server? I am wanting to try it because it sounds cool...but...i dont know what it is.
RE: Hmm....
# Jan 14 2004 at 4:13 PM Rating: Decent
The Test Server is precisely what it's name implies; it is the server that development uses to test new ideas.

To play on test server, browse to the folder where you installed EQ and look for the file TestEverQuest.exe. Use this file to start the game rather than EverQuest.exe.

I've got an older post below with more detail about playing on Test, though that info is now dated and things have changed a bit...

I'm brand spanking new to Test, and loving it. My question is, what's an MPC?
RE: MPCs?
# Jan 14 2004 at 4:08 PM Rating: Decent
Not that anyone is likely to read this (LOL) but...

MPCs don't exist anymore. There was a time when the character select screen for Test Server had a button that would cause you to enter the game as a random mob in a random zone. Such "player-characters" were coined "monster-player-characters" or MPCs.

Dont get me wrong I like the /testbuff command and I used it to get my cleric up there...but now being at 33 I find it harder and harder to find groups. Everyone gets a few levels behind their toon and quits that to make another toon and see what its like playing that one. Now I agree it has helped out test on getting alot more players on it...but it has also helped on getting alot of jerks on there too. I have had to leave good groups just because one person in it was being an ***. One time I was in a group down in HHK and these guys came down to the guard room and wanted to duel everyone and was taking our kills and wouldnt leave until someone did. I have a feeling that wouldnt have happened if /testbuff wasnt around.

Well im done fussing. If you are ever on and need a level 33 Cleric in your group just give me a tell. I am mostly on from 11pm to about 4am cst.

As with all groovy new features on Test, a temporary flood of maroons follows (yes, I said maroons =P).

The addition of the testbuff slash command certainly stirred things up for a bit. But now it has settled back down for the most part. The novelty has worn off.

Things are still forever changed as development now seems to truly treat this server as a test-bed, rather than as "just an extra server that if we crash it, it won't matter". Testing tools are continuing to be employed that disrupt the normal progression of the game (if you choose to use them), and the maroons continue to play with them while their new.

So while a few more heavily populated zones may contain more proddie behavior than in past years, for the most part my old post about Test still stands.

I couldn't agree more with MentalSword about what Test is all about and how people should conduct themselves. I have characters languising on Live servers because I cannot tolerate the idiotic behavior of some of the players on the other servers. Bear in mind that it only takes one or two idiots to ruin the game experience for a lot of people.
I would rather run the risk of logging in and finding a total "wipe", than to put up with the nonsense of the Prooduction Servers. Besides, I would probably be able to get back to where I was faster than if I were on the live servers.

As of a few days ago, when you type /testbuff on this server you instantly become level 25, gain a full set of armor (actually nice gear just renamed), and have all spells up to your level!

Hail Everyone!
I have been on test for around 3 months now and Im loving it.But I havent seen any tourneys ran so im thinking on running one.it would take place in the lake rath arena ,there will be a 2 plat per level interence fee "to make a nice prize for the winner"second and third prize will be what ever good items i can come up with by the time we run the tourney.the Rule list is small 1.Use your own equipment 2.You may challenge any one who is in the tourney and they may decline if they dont wish to fight you. thats it no other rules..Please reply to this and tell me what you think?
RE: Tourney
# Nov 29 2003 at 1:42 AM Rating: Default
Sounds pretty cool to me!! Although, the only suggestion I can think of is makin it so no one can challenge anyone that has a 5 level difference with them (so lvl 40s cant challenge lvl 10s). But even if you didnt do the lvl thing, I still think it'd be a bunch of fun for everyone!! Keep up the good ideas!!

Having grown tired of the constant bickering, shouting, rudeness, and general bedlam of the production servers, I have made some chars on the test server, and find that it is a refreshing change from the rat race on the over-populated prod servers. In fact, when I feel the need to experience the game as (I hope) the developers intended it to be experienced, I come to test. It's always quiet, well, unless some prod servers are down for a patch, or maintenance, and then proddies show up...sigh...

I try to play my char as tho he/she were solely dependent on themselves. I'm developing trade skills, as and when I have the funds available thru looting mobs that I've killed.
What equipment I have is justifiably equivalent to what I should have at my level. I do have 2 items (on 4 chars) that were handed down to me from a higher lvl player, but I've never (on test or production) asked anyone for anything, even so much as a bind, without offering to pay for it, even before the advent of the soulbinders.
If you want to develop a sense of independence, test is a good server to play on. If you expect to behave the same way as people on the prod servers, please, do both yourself, and the rest of us on test a favor...and don't come here to play.
I haven't given up my chars on the prod servers, and probably won't, I have too much time and effort invested in them. But, at the same time, I have been spending more time on test, because it's such a refreshing change from the rudeness, kill-stealing and general lack of the accepted social graces displayed by so many on the prod servers. Here's hoping that it stays that way.

Welcome to Test

I have decided to take King Pusbag up on his invitation, and post some information about playing on Test.

I have been playing on Test for nearly four years now. After a brief stint on the production servers, with their noisy chat channels, kill-stealing, player camping (envision a level 6 gnome wizard sitting on the hill outside of Felwithe, nuking every newbie who dare try walking out the gates), and other general player nastiness, I moved to Test and found peace and quite. Now bear in mind, this was early in the days of EQ, when PKs could kill anyone and kill-stealing was not officially a crime, so the situation has improved… somewhat… perhaps…

So Test was right for me. Is it right for you?

There are some important factors to consider before you invest too much time into a new character on Test:

What would you do if you logged on one day and found that all of your characters were nekkid as newbies, and had clean bank accounts? It’s happened. It’s known as “The Great Wipe”. And it could happen again.

What if you logged on and had no characters left at all? It could happen, they’ve warned us.

Updates are frequent. If you play five days a week, expect updates three of those days on average, and often several updates a day.

The server can come down at anytime, with or without warning. Sometimes several times a day, and sometimes it stays down for half an hour or more. This happens frequently also. Don’t expect to get very many uninterrupted 6 hour gamming sessions. I can’t tell you how many times I THOUGHT I was going to have a nice long hunting session, only to get started, have the server come down, and then stay down for the rest of the time I had available… Argh!

There is no GM support for game issues. It’s widely believed that there are NO GMs on Test at all. This is not exactly true. There are GMs. But they are not there to resolve gamming issues. If you’ve lost an item or corpse, you’re pretty much SOL (and that’s not Shadows of Luclin!). The GMs on Test are mostly programmers. You can contact them about bugs and the like, either directly or through /petition. If it’s a bug in a new feature under development which has caused you to loose something, you MAY, and I repeat MIGHT, MAYBE, IF YOU’RE REALLY, REALLY LUCKY, receive some reimbursement, but don’t count on it.

If you are out to make a mint selling goods and services, Test is not for you. There is no extensive player economy on Test. Items are typically handed down from elder class member to younger, often between complete strangers. Services such as buffs and ports are usually freely given, though donations can be offered. Items crafted by players are also given, or sold at cost. If you want to be wealthy here, you’re going to have to gather it yourself, off the corpses you slay.

Due to the small population, there may be times when you cannot find anyone your level to group with. Or you may need to travel a great distance to get a group. If you solo often, this may not be a problem for you, but be warned! Since the inception of MPCs it is not safe to be alone in a zone if you are under level 25 or so. And you will often pass through a zone in which you are the only inhabitant. Be careful.

OK, so you understand the risks and find them acceptable. Then here are some tips to help your new character be successful:

Avoid the /anon flag. The small population of test allows for highly effective recruiting queries. Group recruiters will often craft specialized /who commands to search for a specific type of character they want or need in their group. Having the /anon flag turned on will cause you to be excluded from these lists and will very often mean you’ve missed out on a great group.

Don’t BEG! There are few quicker ways to be branded a proddie (I’ll cover that term in a second). It is ok to ask for specific things. Some examples: “/ooc Does anyone have a 1HS warrior weapon better than FS Long sword available?” is ok, whereas “/ooc Anyone got any good newbie gear to get rid of?” is not. “/say Could you spare a few PP?” is not acceptable, whereas “/say Excuse me, but I am 2pp shy of having all my level 12 spells, could you perhaps loan me what I need?” is ok. “/ooc Could someone help me with a SoW?” is ok, whereas “/ooc Would someone buff me please?” is not. It’s all in how you ask. You can offer some payment for your buffs, but it will typically not be accepted. It is still gracious to offer though.

Don’t flood the chat channels! This is probably the second quickest way to be branded “Proddie”. And by flooding, I do not mean just lines of garbage, but conversations in /ooc or /shout. Short conversations in /ooc are tolerable, but if it goes beyond three comments each, it needs to move to /tell. And the /shout channel is reserved for critical zone alerts, pertinent to everyone. Such as: “/shout SG to P1!!”, or “/shout Train to Orc Lift!!”.

The term Proddie is short for “Production” and is a derogatory term used to describe production server players who have come to Test and are trying to bring the production server crap with them. If you see your character referred to as a proddie, you are stepping on thin ground and should re-evaluate your playing. Being branded a proddie means no hand-me-downs, no free buffs or ports, no cooperation from other players in general. You might as well delete that character and start over. Or work very hard to change your image.

In general, if you want to get along well, always pay it forward. That is, try to repay favors before you owe them. If you have buffs, buff those younger than you whom you pass in your travels. If some asks for help, and you have the time and the means, help them. When you get a new and better piece of equipment, look out for a younger member of your class to pass your old piece down to. Often, you can watch a group hunt for a bit, then pick the player who seems to be doing the best job as the recipient of the item.

So there you have it. Test is not for everyone. There are other issues to be concerned with besides those mentioned here, such as bugged items and spells, loss of equipment that never makes production, and other such things. But for some, such as myself, the ability to play in a quiet world, with good and decent people, outweighs these risks. I hope this helps you determine whether Test is right for you or not.

If you have any questions or comments, post them here and I will be glad to respond.

Fine summary there Mental.

Myself I've played on test since about a week into Everquest's Launch. I remember when the population peaked at 10 people :) 90% of whom were in Crushbone.

One thing to keep in mind is your reputation will stick to you like glue due to the small population. I'm known level 60's who could not get a group because of an idiotic episode in their youth. (deliberate training, etc)

Thank you Mental, you've answered more than one of my questions...but one more still remains...Why is it called Test? Did you guys get to play as Vah Shir's and Beastlords before SOL? Do you guys get to play with new zone before they come out on the other servers? And my most important question of all...Do you guys get to play with new features? (Like this new 'oppurtunity' thing for pure melee classes)
Thank you all, I might just have to make a few alts on Test to fool around with it!

First off you are quite welcome. I'm glad you found the post useful.

Now to answer your question, YES! For instance, my Froglok was running around Gukta before you even knew the Trolls were leaving!

For weeks now, we have had special merchants available selling all of the melee skills for a few SP each. The only requirement is that your character be of sufficient level to use them.

Now, bear in mind that some expansions have exclusive betas that introduce new features outside the environment of Test. So we don't get EVERYTHING early. But there are many items, spells, quests, and changes that we see long before production servers see them. Some, production may never see at all. =)
MPCs Be Warned
# Dec 08 2001 at 4:22 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all! =)

I would like to make a comment on the topic of MPCs. Playing as these can be fun. As Toralaria said, to help others by joining in their battle AGAINST their enemy is fine. But do not poke and prod a group while they fight then run when they see you. Do not fight newbies at all. They are to be left alone when level 3 and under. Do not try all of the other nasty tactics being used by the most worthless of those playing MPCs. They are already earning MPCs a bad name everywhere.

Currently, providing you are not alone, you can call out in any zone that "Such and such MPC is doing this and that" and he will immediately be hunted down and killed. Myself and my fellows will travel to any zone being plagued by MPCs if there is no one there sufficient in strength to take care of it.

Luckly Luclin has taken in my of those who were playing MPCs. But as the newness wears off they will return. But be warned! It has nearly come to the point where MPCs are KOS to many higher level players. If they cannot behave they will not be tolerated. Whether the ability to play as them remains in the game or not.

So please folks, log on as an MPC, have fun, kill stuff, mingle with the players. It's even possible to communicate, limitedly. MPCs can answer yes/no questions with one jump or two. Skellies can nod and laugh and sit. All these things can be used for MPCs to work with players, rather than run around and try to hit them in the back all time.

Thanks everyone.
Lets keep it fun. =)
Welcome!

one other thing: if you're an MPC don't camp a newbie too much. it gets aggrivating for them, and i't just like camping a corpse on a PvP server. kinda against the play nice policy. And if we camp them too much, VI may take away our spiffy monster player characters, and that'd bite (
