The planing tool is confirmed to be returned on failure. Any other items recovered are because of salvage. I just tried it and got 1 lumber plank and the leather roll returned :)
and scribing the book is optional. I was able to attempt the combine without the scribing the book.

does the user reporting this have any salvage AAs to explain what "got returned" - that seems pretty random.
