Well, I just failed at this combine. My research skill is 170 and I was equipped with a 5% bonus item (geerlok automated quill) bringing my effective skill to 178/179.

I failed with no trivial message, so this item is defintely trivial above 178.

You won't get a trivial message if you fail. This could be trivial at 1, and you still wouldn't get a trivial message upon fail. You will only get a trivial message if you succeed on the combine.

Failing results in a message "You lacked the skills to fashion the items together." and no other message (unless you get an item back, then you'll get that message about fashioning another item).

Atleast, that's the way it used to be. Maybe it's different with this new researching, but I doubt it.

Edit: Added the exact message you get when failing.

#Kadic, Posted: Mar 21 2003 at 8:55 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I dissagree... upon failure when you have trivial you do recieve a Trivial message. it happens sometimes when you do have skill but the small percentage fails, you get the failure to make, as well as You can no longer gain skill from this.

To repeat the correct information above - you do NOT recieve a trivial message if you fail. Doesn't matter if your skill is 250 and you fail on something that requires skill 50 or if your skill is 50 and you fail on something that requires skill 250 - you will NOT receive a trivial message.
The only time you get a trivial message is if you succeed and the item is trivial below your skill level.

Well, I succeeded on the second attempt. YAY!
Still no trivial message so I think it is quite high.
