i had a wood elf ranger named Aedarius on the VallonZek server. once i reached lvl 6 i was a popular pk target (evil necro gnomes). from lvl 7 to lvl 9 took as long in playing time as from lvl 1 to lvl 7 i swear. there is NOTHING to hunt around gfay for that area, and even when i grouped i always seemed to die. i tried using my tracking in butcherblock but that went no faster. SO what i did was, i found a hut in kelethin, dropped all my stuff there, made a new character and let the new character collect all of the stuff to give him a headstart. now, although that is great for the new character, someone KICK ME IN THE FACE! why did i sacrifice my ranger? rangers are cool. yeah, they lvl slow cause of their hybrid, yeah they don't get bind or gate, but they rock. okay anyway, the point of this is do NOT give up your ranger, and if you don't like dying, do NOT go on the PvP servers.

Money?

Well, at lvl 10, you actually have alot of options.
1. Tailoring. I've been reading it, but not gotten a chance to try it (been too busy trying to it lvl 14. Made it whoo hoo). But, weaving Silk seem to be a good way to make $$, and if you find and use a loom in a town, then you don't have to spend the 5 or so plat to buy one. To find one, look for the loom-looking structures in the village and click (right or left with mouse, I don't remember which) on them. If it's a structure you can use, it will open up. Put in your items, combine, and voila. You can weave 2 spiderling silks into bandages, 3 into cords. You can also get silk swatches. All this can sell for a good money. There is a better recipe if you look under Strategy: Skills on this site.

Practice tailoring and you can make and sell armor. Invest in the tailoring book. It is very helpful.

Do not sell your tailored goods to merchants. Sell them to players. YOu make better money.

2. Orcs. At lvl 10, you are perfect for grouping for CB. Everyone loves rangers, even if you don't have a bow yet.
CB has a lot of loot. None of it is high priced, but there is lots of it.
More importantly, there are CB belts. You can do one of two things with these:
A. Take them to Canloe something-or-other at the Warriors guild in Kaladim (next to Arena there). You get armor, a little money, and xp. You also get some faction changes, which help you sell better in Kaladim (i'm ally to merchants at Warriors guild. not as good as prices i get in Kelethin, but not bad). A few faction changes affect Kelething (good) too, I think.
The armor is either tattered or patchwork. You can keep it if you need it. It is small armor. Or sell it. I usually just sell it to merchants or save it to give to newbies, but if you need money, sell it. I don't usually sell it to player, mainly the players that would buy it really should be saving thier money and can't afford to pay the prices you are going to be wanting to sell (better) items for.
B. Sell groups of 5 or 10 belts to players. You can get a few plat per stack. That, coupled with XP from Crushbone makes it well worth it. If you price well, you will get repeat business and make more $$ than if you try and sell high to only a few. Everyone loves a deal.

Other ways to make money:
Courier mail for hte bards guild. This will help build faction and usually yeilds around a gold each time. Worth it if you're going between cities anyway.

If you can group with a few lower teens, especially a druid, Lfay is a good place to make money. You will want to camp the Sister's camp. If you enter Lfay, walk along the zone to your right for a while. Stick VERY close to the zone. If you have a druid in your group, walk under camo. After a while, you will come upon a ruined druid ring with fae drake flying. don't attack them. The zone to MM is here, and if you get in trouble at sisters, it is the closest zone. The Sister's camp is just after the ring. You will see it from the zone wall.

The sisters each drop a necklace with are needed for a quest (see the Paly leader in Felwithe. it is a good quest). They also drop weapons, sometimes bronze and occasionally jewels. I've gotten 5plat selling 1 ivory they've dropped.

You will also get good xp. You can play this forever and lvl. you want the druid to pull. The druid uses Harmony to pull 1 at a time. A group of 2 or 3 can be real sucessful here.
BTW, they con as Kayla, Shayla, Tayla, and Jayla Nybright.

Biggest Risks to Lfay. Wandering Brownies. I've not actually seen them at the Sister camp. They have a very specific route in Lfay. But, you want camo to go there because their path does come close to zone as you are travelling there.

Tier'dal. The next camp after Sisters (if you keep travelling away from ddruid ring) is the dark elf camp. I hear they wander sometimes. I was killed once at sister camp by a wandering drow. This is a VERY rare occurance. I've camped Sisters often. My guess is htat higher lvl players eithre camped the DE's or wandered too close and activated one.

Once you gain a couple of lvls, say around 12 or 13, get a good full group and go to Unrest. This is a dangerous zone, and you will likely die and/or have to zone alot from Trains. Trains are less of a problem if you are in the back corner of the keep, away from the house (not the gazebo side, but the other side). But they still happen, as do over-agros. Everything here is highly agressive. But even the lesser mobs here drop rich loot. I've made several plat a night and gotten excellent xp, dispite dying. You should get bound at the ent to butcher block in Gfay.

I hope this helps.
WE Ranger or Bard? Hmmm
# Jul 23 2001 at 10:15 PM Rating: Default
I've played EQ before and in fact my first char was a ranger, he was pretty good too. Anyhow I started to fall behind in lvls and later quit.
Well I'm back again and I'm deciding whether to make a WE ranger or bard for my first char. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. Also, does anyone know if WE bards are any good and if they can both solo and tank, and what kind of weapons would be good to use with him?

Thanks

Well, if you are kinda a newbie, I would go with Bard. They are much more wanted and dont get dissed alot by other classes. However, if you want a challange, play a Ranger. Rangers are awsome but no one knows just how good they are. (That WILL change though.) Anyways, for a Bard I would get an Ebon Razor and maybe some bronze to start out with, (go for Lambent). Hope This helps!

My first char is a ranger. Don't really have trouble finding groups. Wars, Monks, and Rogues love the Strength of Earth spell. Sure I hear jokes about being a paper tank sometimes, but root does a good job of getting mobs off me if I need to back out. Snare is awesome in dungeon areas. Sow is great. Track rules. We get healing spells. I think all classes are awesome, to bad I can't play them all.

popular race

I would suggest a Wood Elf Druid. Here is why:

1. They are one of the easiest to learn to play if you are new to the game. My first character was also a WE Druid (not this one). You get heal and shield spells to start with, which helps you survive those starting lvls much better.

2. Woodelves are very popular, atleast on my server. We are liked enough by most of the races. And we're pretty.

3. Druids rock. Why? Well, 1) they are easy to solo with. Because of your healing and buff AND damage spells, you can solo most creature in your lvl range in Gfay. Once you get lvl, you can even solo orc cents one at a time. This is a bonus if there is no one on you want to group with.
2) if you do want to group, there are VERY few groups who will refuse a druid, and usually they only do because they are full. Everyone loves us because we are so versatile. We make good primary and secondary healers for a long time. While we aren't tanks, we are not bad in melee combat, and we have some area spells that rock if the group get's multiple mobs (just becareful not to be too close to the mobs when you blast with lightning).

And, you get this all at relatively low lvls. You get good scouting spell(camo) at lvl 4. That is also when you get some of my favorite damage spells. You also get decent buffs at lvl 9.

At lvl 14, you have Bind and SoW, and EVERYONE loves you. Add to that Ports begining in I think your 20's (maybe sooner, I don't remember off hand) and you'll be shaking'em off with a stick.

Oh, did I mention self-gating at lvl 4? I began my travelling career then becaue you can travel relatively safely

Sense animal is (i think) a lvl 1 spell. While you don't get track, it does help you hunt bats, bees, etc.

Oh, and don't attack bears and wolves. They don't agro you. Infact, they like you. I've wolves help me against orcs. Okay, if they make the kill, yes it is a KS, but I've had it save my life.

By lvl 14 (I think), you can charm them, and it ain't KS anymore. :)

Okay, so have fun. Look me up /tell if you are on Quellious server (a good server for newbies)

RE: popular race
# Jul 22 2001 at 5:40 PM Rating: Default
It dosn't really matter wich race is the most popular, but i wouldn't reccommend playing an evil race (i.e. Trolls, Ogres, Dark elves, iksar) as your first char. because they are not welcome in many places. Also, if you want to focus on popularity, look at the servers, not the races. i started my first charecter on the tunare server (one of the more popular) and he is now at lvl 31
(wood elf ranger) and he is my favorite. Hope this helps, and good luck =)
RE: popular race

The most popular race is prob human or dark Elf. But dont choose your race according to popularity (I just recomend you stay away from trolls ogres and iksar because they level slowly)

Trolls, Ogres, and Iksar don't all necessarily level slowly. Just because they don't have access to some of the *good* zones/outposts, they do have access to some very fruitful hunting grounds. An Iksar can stay in Kunark until 60, and even in only about 3-4 zones 'til 50. Evil races do get a small penalty for grouping with good races... Angrie, from EoD, and Ogre Warrior made 60 in 17 days! His is a special case, but they're really not much more difficult if you know what you're doing. I'm also not sure Dark Elves are the second most popular race... Might be mistaken. Human, High Elf, Wood Elf, Dark Elf, Halfling maybe top five? I dunno. Maybe Dwarf instead of Woodies. The Humans and the Halflings will level the fastest, and the Halflings have arguably the best newbie zone; Misty Thicket, with access to Kithicor, Runnyeye, and there's a Druid Circle here. Half Elves can start in one of three places, depending on Deity, and choice. They are Kelethin, the Wood Elf Tree City, Freeport, and Qeynos. Kelethin is nice because you don't have to zone anywhere from your orc/wolf/pixie/skel/spider/bandit/wisp/wasp/faerie/brownie (all of which are found here) killing to trade/bank/shop/etc. It is in the Greater Faydark, attached to the Butcherblok Mountains, and the Lesser Faydark, and to Crushbone, the home of the Orcs. Whatever you end up choosing, don't feel pressured to level quickly. Enjoy the character and the environments. It's a great game that shouldn't be rushed. Hope this helps. Good luck, and be safe.=)

Have you tried playing a troll? I get NO experience in groups of my own lvl's taking yellow and red cons.

the only bad things about Wood elves really is that the newbie zone is overcrowded most of the time and orc hill is a mess. also, if you arn't good at walking, lol, you might kill yourself jumping out of kelethin.

Greetings from Therris-Thule!!

I am Athynna Amberhart lvl 28 Wood Elf Ranger. She is my favorite character ( My halfling Druid is second ). And I am always surprised at the negativity expressed towards our race/class. Given that the Wood Elf is the most popluar race and Ranger is the second or third most poplar class - what's the problem?

I hunted vermin & tricksters until level 5, then orc hill until 9. I had a severe case of wanderlust so I headed towards Butcherblock & killed drakes & such. With small forays into Steamfont ( to collect microservers etc ) and the LFay to kill bandits ( with a group of course ). I wasn't interested in leveling quickly as I enjoy the roleplaying aspect of the game.

After 15 I travelled the world for awhile. First, going to Freeport & the areas ajoining it - West/East Commons, NRO, and Oasis. At 18 I dropped myself into High Keep and killed gnolls and orcs, orcs and gnolls and an occasional bandit on the ramp to Karanas. At 23 I wandered the Karanas for awhile travelling as far as Lake Rathe. I returned to Freeport via the "southern" route. Stopping in Oasis and the Ogre Island in Timorous Deep. At 25 I went to Kunark and have played there until just recently when I have returned to High Keep to decimate pickclaw warriors.

On the way I have fletched my way to 180 ( started late - what can I say ) brewed up to 100 ( so I LIKE to drink ), fished up to 150 ( way too much medding time ) and have started baking & jewelry ( cause I want some int boosting jewelry and no matter how you do it it costs ). I have made side trips to Unrest/Dagnor's, Mistmoore ( guild raid), Lavastorm (guild raid), Upper Guk, King Xorbb's gorge etc etc etc

My advice - Get up to a comfortable level, make friends with druids to bind you and travel. Levelling is great, gets you cool stuff, but travelling make for interesting play & some cool friends.

May the light of Tunare brighten your way -

Athynna - Therris-Thule ( wood elf Ranger )
Charai - Drinal ( halfling Druid )
Taoeaich - Thorell ( gads I forgot ) Iksar Shaman

A lot of level 16s like to stay in crush bone for far too long. And most of the friends i have made stay there in tr too. I wish my ranger could bind lol. I would travel a lot more freaquently.

I know what the problem is. I have come across this time and time again. Most of the people that dont play this class thing we are the worst class. We dont have as much HP as any other melee. That is what they dont like about us. I am slowly trying to make, no FORCE, people to realize that we arent that bad on the Veeshan Server. 1 dual at a time. I'm not going to put up with waiting hours to get in a group, just beacause of one little thing. We are still a very good class, I wouldnt say the best, if there is a best, but we are alot better than people think we are. Any of you Rangers out there, don't give up. There is time for change.

Yep, all you have to do is have you and your online spouse-to-be make it to L20 and then you contact a GM/guide who OKs the two of you having the same last name. The GM/guide will then do his magic and *poof* you are now married in EQ.

You have to decide what your last name is going to be-- if it is going to be yours or his. You may marry any race or gender*. The only stipulation is that you both are L20 and deserving of a last name.

--Pusbag Infection, King of the Trolls

*yes, same sex marriages are allowed-- I am aware of one for certain, on a server that I used to have a character on.
RE: Marriage
# Oct 20 2001 at 2:51 AM Rating: Default
Actually, marriage is possible at any time, level 20 is just required for surname. It is kinda pointless to get married before your surname can tell the world you and your spouse are married, but I do know some couples who have gotten married before then.

Also, a GM/guide is NOT necessary for a marriage ceremony, just nice, since they can make the name change simultaneously. I know, since my wife and I tried to get a GM to perform our wedding ceremony, but none were available when we /petitioned, and only apprentice guides were on at the time. We wer at a loss since we wanted to get married that night! Luckily, we had a guildie druid who decided to roleplay a marriage ceremony on the spot, and we did our own name change (almost) simultaneously. We did not have any trouble selecting the same last name (only first names are required to be unique to the server your character is on). It was very nice to have our guildie do the ceremony, I recommend it to anyone!

To make your surname, type /surname <your new surname>. Once you press enter, however, your name is set, and can only be changed by a /petition to a GM (also how you divorce in EQ, btw..I have unfortunately known a couple that required this "service" as well...)

Congratulations, and may you and your spouse have many happy hours adventuring together!

Ahhh, we have a misunderstanding! I meant gamemaster, not guildmaster. Actually, a guide would be more likely to respond to your request for an official to preside over the ceremony with the blessing of the gamemaster he works for.

Kinggraypaws is correct in his estimation of the choice of class, but be aware that Druids are often knocked as being "drood doods" and get a fair amount of abuse. Just don't take it personally.

If you end up going to a PvP server being a Druid is a terrific choice, especially if you make him a halfling. Misty Thicket is a great place to start out in the gankfest they call PvP.

Advice for Wood Elves

In my travels through Norrath as a level 28 (dinged last night) Wood Elf Ranger, I have had to do everything from scratch myself. So that the new WE's have a little better information than I did, here is my travelogue. :D

At level 1-3 I stuck pretty mush to the noob areas around the POD and noob lifts- leveling was rather quick and straightforward.

At lev 4, I began to hunt just north of the orc lift in Gfay- never travelling too close to orc hill as that is certain death (actually several deaths) for a lone ranger at lev 4.

Level 5 was the beginning of the of trying to group at orc hill. Unfortunately, level 5-7 groups are often filled with VERY inexperienced players that don't play well with others. :p I found it was better to solo until level 6 then move to the CB tunnel entrance- THAT is where you start to learn to group.

Around level 7-8, I began to foray in groups into CB proper. Begin by hunting to the left of the tunnel so you don't get caught up by the trains that get pulled from the throne room by inexperienced or outmatched players. By level 9 you get your spells as a ranger so you are suddenly a bit more useful to your compatriots.

Begin hunting around the slaver caves (over the bridge to the left of the tunnel) in groups. Watch out for the legos that get oulled to there occasionall from the lego camp on the hill- though outside the cabin is a good place to wait for your SoWed puller to bring legos as you advance.

By level 11 you can start hunting almost anywhere in CB. I liked CB a lot as there are good groups to be had, especially in the throne room from levs 12-17.

By level 17 if you aren't ready for a change of scenery then you are crazier than I am. I made some trips to Unrest- but found the train there to be unruly and too common to gain much useful experience. The other place that I was hunting at this time was Oasis- where I stayed until level 20.

Level 20 was where I moved to Lake of Ill Omen. I started at the windmill, moved to the haunted tower, then to the goblin tower, then- finally, I hunt in the Sarnak fort. Front door, back door, doesn't matter with a good group. Last night I was in a group with 2 other rangers, 2 wizzies, and 1 cleric. That was one of the finest groups that I have had the pleasure of being in. Plenty of melee with the right amount of artillery thrown in- plus a healer to keep me and the other rangers fresh.

So now I am level 28. I expect to hunt in LOIO for 1 more level then move into Frontier Mountains for bigger and badder stuff. Loot has been great in LOIO and can only get better in FM.

By the way- rangers make good tanks. They can taunt, root, nuke, etc. All the things that make a good tank are in one place. I love my ranger.

Crushbone gets a bit monotonous for the Wood Elf with wanderlust. Without having to cross the Ocean, around levels 8 to 11, the Butcherblock Mountains are a good hunting ground, and Steamfont has different areas that are good for all levels up into the 20s I believe.

Rangers tank about the same as monks and rogues, or in other words, THEY CAN'T TANK!!! Low sta and defense and no plate. They deal about the same dmg as wars, (possibly a [little] more) tank MUCH worse, and have utility spells (such as sow).

Ok I have a wood elf ranger on the Brell server. He used to be named Coppertone, but now he is named Polovan. At level one I hunted in the newbie zone, and spent all my money on fletching. At level 4 , I moved to hunting orcs at the orc hill and in crushbone. I continued to fletch, while saving some money for equipment.
At level 15, my fletching was up to 150, and I was making and selling Trueshot Bows as well as other Ashwood bows that I could make. I started hunting in the Estate of Unrest, which is from BB to Dagnours cauldron. I continued until level 20, which I went to Lake of Ill Omen in Kunark. To get here just take the shuttles from BB. By now I have awesome equipment, and I have lots of money, and my fletching was up to 202. I got rich on selling Darkwood Bows, and I made about 50+ platinum on each hunting trip I made. I also did the Hero Bracer quest, for a friend let me loot the shackles. It takes a lot of faction work, so I did a lot of trips to EC and getting/buying DF belts and turning them in in Freeport. All you have to do is if the guy gives you the quest, give him the shackles. That's all. It takes amiably to warmly faction to do this. My ranger is now level 25, and I get great exp at the sarnak fort. If you want to see my equipment, just look up my character, Polovan. I am NOT twinked on him, for he is my highest guy, but I have twinked my other characters with him.

Your in luck!!!!!! They (verant) just made it possible 4 u 2 switch charectors to different servers! However, you have to pay a $$fee$$ (not quite sure how much, though) to do that :p, so i reccommend that u just start on a popular server (such as tunare, my favorite) so that you have a better chance of ending up on the same server as your friends.

Where to hunt?
# Jun 08 2001 at 10:17 PM Rating: Decent
I know this is a popular question, but I'm asking this myself. I'm lvl 12 ranger and I'm getting tired of waking up in the morning and killing blue orcs all day long. I can't think of any good place to hunt. (this is my first char =)
If anyone could help me I would be grateful. Thanks =)
good luck and good travels to you all!

At lvl 12, the world is open to you.

Steam is great. I would suggest a druid with you. They will get SoW soon if they aren't already 14. Also, they have a great spells for dealing with summoned (not sure who else does). my little ward summoned delivrs up to 41 damage (regularly) to elementals. you want that there, because they do agro, and hit hard.

BB is okay. You can probably solo or small group chess, but it is popular and usually camped. BB is actually best before you pass 10 in my opinion.

Another good group zone for xp is Sister camp in Lfay (see my other post)

If you have players you group with regularly that are your lvl or just better, Unrest is good. If you camp around back, trains aren't as big of a problem. If you can get a 14 druid, have them cast SoW on you. If train is called and is headed your way, you can zone out fast.
I also suggest that the druid bind just outside unrest zone and that they be your loot-holder. If train is called, make sure they are covered to gate out (they will be encumbered with loot) and hightail out.
Try to hit unrest on off peak if you can. The fewer the people the fewer the trains. maybe send a sow'd scout to check it out first before the whole group goes.
Oasis is supposed to be good, but never been.
I'm not particularly fond of the commons. The good camps are, well, camped.

I also got sick of that single pixel of exp from Cents, so I eventually found the area outside the Mino caves in Steamfont. Lots of stuff to kill. Just be sure to pull to the sides. Either that or Blackburrow.
