You can get a scimitar of the leafrunner after completing the newbie armour quests, but by the time you'll be able to do the quests, you'll probably have far better weapons in possession.

Good luck

Arg :( There are too many wood elf druids; as to halflings, make human druids or half elves. And wood elves make nice warriors if you pump up their DEX, AGI, STA, and STR a bit, with some AC and HP items :)

Wood elf rogues are great. with the nice DEX and high AGI, they make fine rogues. downside is the low STA :(

Bards. I love my bard to death! If you put a lot of STR, DEX, CHA, and STA on your bard, you'll have a great wood elf bard to play. :)

Rangers. I also love wood elf rangers too :) just put the normal stats IE STR STA and some WIS too, and you're ready to enter the world. ^_^

Im making a druid and am debating what to race to be, is WE any good? Thanks

My roomate has a WE druid. They are a very good sololing class and are great healers second to shammies (or tied) and clerics. WE, Humans, HE, and halfings are the dru races. Elves and humans are almost identical except for the starting stats (Humans and HE are stronger but you want wisdom as a dru so humans and WE are better than HE cause they only have 60wis unstead of 75 and 80wis respectivly, thats in MHO). then agian you will be meleing early on so its really your call. Halfings did get an xp bonus but i think they cancelled that, their stats are good for a dru but they have low int and char which doesn't really matter much. I would go with the WE because i like the Gfay to CB, BB or steamfront, to paludual to wherever. The startin city of kelethin is a little confusing at first but it'll work out.

BTW if you make a char on bertox i could help you out a little. usually on fridays now but in the summer will be on almost everyday.

What do you bace your stats against? Is it like so many out of 100 or some thing?
How do the servers differ?
Which God/Goddess is which?
Kunark? Velious? Luclin???
And any thing else I havnt mentioned... I guess this is whak mum was talking about when she said some thing about not running before you can walk.

And yes I have tryed the help but it wasnt working :p ;)
Well a few helpful tips

Aloha dear -- just a few helpful tips that are not addresses below.

If this is your first character in everquest, I would suggest playing your first character on a non-PvP server. Your early life will be a LOT less frustrating not having to worry about PvP issues as you learn the game.

As for diety consider strongly chosing Tunare, and place the bulk of your starting points in stamina. But if you have already rolled your character, you can not change those things without rerolling your 'toon.

Consider taking the time to search through the giudes posted here, and on the Ranger Glade. You may find a link there in the general links listed to the left.

Learn the basics of character maneuver, the killing of mobs for "lewt" to sell to friendly vendours for starting funds. Find a well equipped lowbie friend to pal around with as you learn about your new profession -- the ranger

I used to be a newbie...still am in many wayz which i believe is the magic of EQ. Just when you think you're all set, something happens that makes you feel like a newb all over again. Happens to me every day...well almost.
I just thought I'd throw my version of a newbie guide that I wish i had seen when i first set foot in Norrath.

*Print maps...as many as you can. And try to get the ones that have the coordinates on them. Coordinates are KEY, trust me. EQAtlas.com is the wayz to go here...

*Set up a "HOT KEY" for '/loc' and use it often. ESPECIALLY if you're about to die and have no clue as to where you are. Without a 'loc', people can't help you find your corpse.

*Con everything...leave the red & yellow stuff alone for the most part unless you're in a group.

*Track. Use '/tracksort distance' to save yerself many a wild goose chase and to keep yerself a safe distance from those that con red. It doesn't matter that you can find the blue conning mob yer tracking if there's a red between you and it.

*Practice as many combat skills as you can. Rangers have among the greatest flexibility in the different types of weapons we can use so try and keep all yer skills up as much as you can. Ask anyone of any class that had a great 1 hand blunt weapon fall into their laps at lvl 35 and had only a 27 skill in using one. It takes too long and a lot of pain to practice up yer combat skills at later levels so if possible, keep em up as you go. Concentrate on yer one of choice but don't neglect the others.

*Change your "auto-attack" key to something other than 'A'. I died a lot from not bringing up my chat bar before typing and if you accidentally attack a storekeep, you can hang it up. Changed mine to 'X' and it hasn't happened since.

**BE VERY VERY VERY NICE TO CLERICS.

*Don't shout for help...use /yell or /y. Shouting to the whole zone for help is only going to be good for letting the whole zone know that in about 2 minutes you're going to be shouting for someone to help you find your corpse. (See "HOT KEY" for '/loc' near top)

*Get used to dying. It happens to everyone at every level.

*Visit this site for any questions as to what items are used for. Most likely, it'll be on here or a site that's linked to here.

*Group. Often. And set up a HOT KEY for '/assist'. You make an Enchanter's job much harder (or impossible) if you keep attacking the only mob that the rest of your group ISN'T attacking. Having your whole group on one mob at a time does wonders for saving the healers mana and the amount of time it takes to take the baddies down.

*Don't Kill Steal. Not nice and people will remember your name later on. You wouldn't think so but I keep a list of people that have done it to me (only the ones that did it intentionally) and more than a couple times, someone on my 'list' has asked me for help n' I politely said no.

*Don't automatically inspect everyone you meet. It's annoying.

*If you start as a wood elf, look up the Crushbone Belts quest on this site and do it early and often. Among the easiest xp quest for the level in the game, i think. And you get tattered armor to start which isn't so bad for the level you'll be doing that quest...unless you're a twink. ;)

*Remember to get a bind whenever you get off a boat or get a teleport. Making corpse runs from Kelethin (i'm a wood elf) to Oasis got old quick and taught me this lesson fairly quickly. Learn yer lesson from me here, it's far less frustrating, trust me.

*Buy backpacks as soon as you can afford em. Nothing like a lot of inventory space.

*Don't neglect Fletching like i did.

*When you get spells, buy all of them. And when you get Dance of the Fireflies, use it whenever you can to get your Conjuration skill up. You don't want to NOT be able to use Stinging Swarm later on just cuz your Conjuration is feeble. I went through 2 whole bars of mana on fizzles trying to cast Stinging Swarm....had to do DotFireflies for 3 nights (eq nights, that is) before i could get Stinging Swarm off at all.

*Practice Sense Heading. It's easy to get up and has saved my life more than once when running blindly in any direction OPPOSITE of the thing killing me. If you know about where the zone is and what direction, you can snare/run/sense heading and get far enough awayz that you have a min or two to find the zone.

*Snare. Often. It's among the best spells in the game, in my opinion. And a lifesaver for a fact.

THESE ARE JUST A FEW...the only wayz to learn is to venture out, do something stupid, learn from your mistake and never do it again. LOL
Hope some of this helps you newbs out at least a little...good luck in Norrath, you're going to love it.

I don't think you can put a point into conjuration until level 7... but I could be wrong... anyways, you're right... another easy thing to do is offer free buffs... by buffing others, you are not only helping them, but yourself... believe me, I had every single stat <abjuration, conjuration... and the others> maxed out every level mainly from buffing... also, at level 14, when you can create your own food <might be lvl 9... not sure... oh, and this is for druids...> create food and drinks!!! i littered the entire druid guild with free food and drinks and told all newbies that free food and drinks awaited them at the druid guild... make haste!! LOL about 15 people ran in and the food vanished because of the time limit... had some pissed off newbies... anyways, using buff spells will help increase those stats, but you'll need other spells for the other stats... every time you level, take time out to increase your stats... I never had the Stinging Swarm problem... past level 14... my aunt told me that no matter how good you skill is at conjuration or abjuration, every first level of the spell <i.e. Stinging Swarm is at lvl 14, so that is the first level of that spell> you'll almost always fizzle... it sucks, yeah, but you get used to it... but that isn't why a man once said "Practice Makes Perfect"!!! oh yeah... have fun!!!
For those wanting to play wood elf bards
# Aug 30 2002 at 11:04 PM Rating: Decent
I am currently playing a wood elf bard. Granted before I start that my views are offset because I have a twinked bard with many HP items on him. However, a wood elf bard gets a unique armor quest for only there race and class, (I think half elfs can choose between human Songweaver's Platemail suit and Tranquilsong Platemail suit) I do enjoy the HIDING and FORAGING skills.
If you are thinking about or have never played a bard character before, I am falling in LOVE with using instruments for the travelling speed song, and the healing song. (mine heals 8 hit points every 5 seconds. good regen after a tough fight)
And a bard also receives, at a trained later time, TRACKING, DUEL WIELD, DODGE, PARRY, RIPOSTE, SAFE FALL, SNEAK (GREAT to use with hiding, you can walk slowly undetectable by all LIVING monsters, just like a thief) DISARM TRAPS, and SENSE TRAPS. Oh ya, and PICK LOCKS for those wonderous adventurers impatient to find the right key for locked doors, <grin>
Hope this helps someone make a decision about the bard, wood elf, class.

*Did I mention I LOVED the starting natural abilities of a wood elf?

Anyone else think we are getting the short end of the stick? Almost every other race has gotten a new class or something but not us. I personally think that they need to let wood elves be Beastlords and/or Monks to balance out the huge difference in class selection. then again i think because W.E get to be druids and H.E get to be almost every casting class that they won't add anything to the race...
Another thing is that I feel screwed now that halflings can be rangers...That was a class that was supposed to be Elf and human only, kind of our balancer to give our race some legit leverage. They already let halflings be druids and val shir be bards, now they have given rangers away. Plus, seriously do the short races really need more? they already get to be almost every class in the game now that they can be shadow knights( another huge mistake PvP wise)with the exception of bards, beastlords, and monks. And verant must know that when they let gnomes be SKs that the very next day there would be 50 twinked gnomes infront of crushbone murdering all the newbies.Anyways, thats just my rant.

RE: ranger

YES thats the only answer. Ya half elfs and humans make good rangers and also the hafling but the WOOD ELF is what to be. I love my ranger. They have a great starting zone G Fay and at lvl 7 or 8 you can fight in CB. Stay there a whil till they con light blue then move out twords Dagnors Cauldronand then into State of Unrest. Fight death beetles and jack-o-lanters. In your low to mid teens go out to Oasis. Find a group for orc highway or just fight crocs along the shore line. Or just skip oasis and go to LOIO. It is way worth the trravel xp and $ wise.

Well hope this helped

For sure - I have been layng my WE Rgr for a while now ad I have put her in several diferent types of armor & weapons. She is very diverse and that whole being dead thing with no food and water? Pishaw. I forage up some grub and some other stuff that tends to sell pretty well. The oak bark foraged form Kith forest and the morning dew in tree city, it sells for about 5pp per, which isnt bad cash for a youngun like me. Plus, you get the pers of hack & slash as well as some buffs & kiss my butt you are dead spells. I have cycled through several different combinations, but I always come back to wood elf and for sure the ranger. My alt is (you got it) a wood elf - bard. they are pretty cool too. look me up some time and i will gladly help you out.

That is a question of personal preference, friend but it's my opinion that the innate abilities that come with being a Wood Elf make them the popular choice.

Wood Elves have infravision so we can see in the dark better...still a lil difficult but at least it isn't PITCH BLACK.
We also get foraging early on and that helps because you won't ever be worried about food and water. And don't forget there are MANY quest items that need to be foraged, as well. All Rangers get forage but Wood Elves are the only ones that get it from the beginning and that little head start is nice. :)
Wood Elves have a higher agility and dexterity than their human counterparts and can wear most, if not all, armors that humans can wear too.

I hear Halfling Rangers have nice stats to start with but their size limits their ability to wear certain armors...namely those MEDIUM and larger.

I guess i just like Wood Elves as Rangers because if you put your extra points into STR, you start with the stats a human ranger needs to get good gear with mods in order to obtain. Their stamina is higher though...and stamina=hitpoints.

Create one of each...check out their stats, where you'll start in Norrath and the immediate hunting grounds, look ahead to the future if possible and see where you want to be....and create the character that you think can get you there. :)

have fun..
