This is the 8th Garadain quest. It is an all out war against Chief Ry'Gorr and his troops.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Thank you, ______, your service to our people has been most helpful. The time has come for our people to make war with the Ry`gorr. They must pay for their transgressions against our people. We are just waiting on you. Prepare yourself for glorious battle and tell me when you are [ready].'
Your faction standing with Coldain got better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif got worse.
You gain experience!!

You say, 'I am ready.'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Very well, ______, give me the Adamantite ring and I will give you the marching orders. Once the orders are given to Gloradin in the next hut, we will be underway. You then must follow me to what will be our battleground. I must warn you, I will hold your ring until the head of Chief Ry`gorr is given to me. If we fail, all will be lost... for both of us.'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Give this to Gloradin and return to me immediately, it is time. May Brell be with us!'
Your faction standing with Coldain got better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif got worse.
You gain experience!!

As you can see, the 8th quest is tough. You only get ONE chance to do it right. Once you give Garadain your ring, you must kill Chief Ry'Gorr, loot his head, and give the head to Garadain. Ry'gorr only has a head during this event. I am unsure if you can do the quest if Garadain dies. Most likely, if he dies during this event you won't be able to complete the quest. You only get one shot at this, because you lose the ring.

This battle involves 30+ rygorr, including some low 50's. This probably requires a well-tuned team of 55-60th level snare kiters, or alternatively a full 30+ PC army.

Upon hand-in to Gloradin:

Gloradin Coldheart says 'Thank you. I will return to the Dain and inform him that the battle is underway. Please escort Garadain to the battlefield and see that he returns safely. May Brell bless you and bring you victory over these beasts.'
You gain experience!!

Garadain starts to walk towards the Orc fort.

You say, 'Hail, Garadain Glacierbane'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Follow me closely, friend, time is of the essence. I will describe our situation as we walk.'

Your pulse quickens in anticipation of battle!

Garadain Glacierbane says 'The Dain's own royal troops will be at our disposal for the battle. This is good news, they are hardened, experienced soldiers. The bad news is that our sources indicate that the Ry`gorr have been alerted to our presence and will be ready for an attack. This is most unfortunate... They will not go down without a fierce fight.'

You hear the pounding of Ry`gorr war drums.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'It is of utmost importance that you stay with me throughout the fight. Your focus must be on killing Chief Rygorr and keeping me alive, mind that you do not become distracted. If I fall the Dain's men will retreat and you'll definitely be cut down.'

Garadain Glacierbane groans, 'It is worse than I thought. Not only are they prepared for an attack, but they have the Kromrif here to help them. Our steel will be tested today. Be sure not to show the troops any fear.'

Garadain walks away from the Orc fort to arrange his troops on the plain to the north.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'TROOPS! FALL IN!'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Listen up men!'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'You all know why we're here. For decades these savages have menaced our people. Recent events have been too much to bear and the Dain has declared war! We will stop at nothing short of the Ry`gorr's annihilation!'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'No longer will we tolerate their heathen presence in our lands! Never again will we mourn the loss of a Coldain to these pawns of the Kromrif! Our deeds here today shall make this land safe for Coldain for all time!'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Today the Ry`gorr fall! Tomorrow the Kromrif!'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Fall out men!'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Stay back from the initial charge, my friend. We will go directly for the chief once the troops are engaged. Follow me closely!'

Garadain Glacierbane shouts 'For the Glory of Thurgadin! CHARGE!'

Once you've looted the NO TRADE Chief Ry`Gorr's Head, give it to Garadain.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Good work friend! The Dain will hear of this right away. We couldn't have defeated the Ry'gorr without your help. Take this ring as proof that you have served the Coldain well. You may wish to show it to the Seneschal should you ever stop in our fine city. Farewell, ______, it has been my pleasure knowing you.'

Coldain +35
Dain +8

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 35
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 8
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif got worse.
You gain experience!!

The reward is the Velium Coldain Insignia Ring.

I followed GOMIN's post from January 2008.

Initiated war and ran STRAIGHT to the Orc Fort. -- I had a 61 Box cleric waiting inside the gates, to the right, invis.

Pop cloudy potion with warrior and head inside to the right.

Cleric paci all nearby mobs and pull the Chief. Then root.

Warrior mops up mob, loot head, pop cloudy potion.

Cleric gates out. Warrior heads out to where the dwarves are arranging just over the hill out front of the orc fort. They have yet to initiate the battle, I hand in the head.

Onto step 9.

Sometimes I just wonder what I've done for Karma to kick me so hard...

I get started on this one, and hand in my ring, then hand over the marching orders, invis up and run for the fort i had previously cleared. I get there and all the mobs are still down and no pops yet. While I'm waiting a lower level character comes from the CC zone area, runs through the fort and has the whole mess pop on his head as he's going by. He doesn't stop and runs straight out of the fort and into the waiting Coldain army dragging them all behind him. Needless to say, I didn't get the kill-shot on Chief Ry`Gorr, had the body poof, and am back at square 1. Stupid Quest!

8: THE VELIUM RING

Garadain's War

1) EASTERN WASTES: Give Garadain your Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring and he will give you Marching Orders.
.

2) Give the Marching Orders to Gloradin Coldheart (Level 40), in the hut next to Garadain's hut.

Gloradin may not be up. You will need Gloradin up to do this.

This activates the sequence and the battle must be won, or all is lost (back to the first ring)!

Garadain will lead you into the fray -- after a bit of pomp and circumstance. You do not have to wait on him.

There will be a host of A Ry'Gorr Orc (Level ??) as well as Kromrif Soldier (Level ??)!

When I did this sequence, the MOB's did not spawn until Garadain starting walking.

.

3) You must now go kill Chief Ry'Gorr (Level 45) and loot Chief Ry'Gorr's Head, at the Ry'Gorr fort.

There will be about 30 Orcs/Giants, to include some named, of varying levels and it can be a big fight.

NOTE: The Chief only drops his head during this triggered event. Spawning him any other way will not gain you his head!

The Chief will still be in the Ry'Gorr fort -- but instead of being at his throne room -- he will be just inside the gates, behind his forces and accompanied by other MOB's.

Using invisible can get you safely inside the fort.

I safely went in and to the right, where there were no MOB's.

I was able to pacify the MOB's with the Chief -- and single pull him.

He will run, so be sure to root him once he is under 20% health.

.

4) EASTERN WASTES: Return (use invisible to get back out of the fort) and give Garadain the Chief Ry'Gorr's Head.

He will give you a Velium Coldain Insignia Ring.

NOTE: Garadain will NOT accept the head and give you the ring unless the sequence is active. Afterwards, he will refuse the head... so do it ASAP.

broken?

Appears to be broken as of patch January 16th 2008. Handing 7th ring to Garadain gets you the marching orders, which in turn were handed to Gloradin. Garadain never despawns into his 'rally the troops' version, he just sits there in the hut.

Ry'gorr fort didn't despawn, Kromriff stuff spawned around it. Dwarfs never formed up, just hung out in groups of 3 until they despawned. Killed Chief, looted head, unfortunately it's useless to me, as is.

I've done this for numerous alts, never seen this happen before.

[attempted on saryrn, 2008/01/17]

[EDIT]: Did it again on 01/19, script worked correctly this time. I killed Garadain the day before, he might have been bugged.. either way I'm not sure, but now I have an extra ry'gorr head for the trophy room. *puzzled*

just soloed it like 5 minutes ago...

did the turn ins and whatnot, then waited for everyone to pop up at the rygor fort. invised and ran right to the named. slaughtered. grabbed the head and ran for the garadain guy and did the turn in. got my 8th ring!

then comes the fun part. you can train the dorfs with the leftovers and watch the fun!!!

so yes. you can just kill the *spawned* version of the cheif and do the turn in and not kill anything else. i didnt even wait for the dorf to get the move on =)

This is probably kind of obvious, but as a reminder, make sure you get the killing blow on Chief Ry'gorr rather than one of the dwarves. His corpse will disappear and you'll be stuck starting over. Just happened to me because I forgot about that detail :)

Also, I saw one post below that said all the dwarves despawned when the last orc/giant died. This didn't happen to me. They stayed up for at least 2-3 minutes afterwards before I gated.

Soloing the 8th Coldain Ring (Paladin)
# Jan 08 2006 at 12:26 PM Rating: Decent
I just solo'd the 8th ring war with my 70 paladin (12143 hp, 1905 ac, full defensive aa's). It was "easy." I was also "stupid." I handed in my ring and then the note, then aa horsed it over to the orc fort invis. Once inside, I pacified the guys around the chief while standing in the wall's gate, thus aggroing everything. I hit guard of humility, then turned on my atk/ferocity tribute, owned the chief, ran the guys away, looted the chief, then proceeded to get my *** beaten on by 20 some odd light blues. Heal potions, self HoTs, fast heals, and lay on hands later, I finally found garadain again (he was lagging behind his troops). Handed in the head, got the ring, ran like hell. It was pretty, but it worked.
My best advice: don't stand in the wall's gate when you pacify the guys around the chief. Stand inside the building doorway, away from the light blue mobs that dispell my damage shield. Hope this helps

Despawn on final war mob kill!
# Dec 30 2005 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
Okay, so, I'm reading the posts, thinking I have a chance with my Beast/Cleric boxing and it works out great. I got inside the fort before the spawns and even took on the entire group inside the fort without any trouble. Looted the head, looked outside for the turn in guy, nothing. So, I figured I killed too fast. I wait, and decide to start fighting the rest of them, no problem. The warriors show up about 1/2 way through the fighting and we're cleaning up nicely. While my beast is fighting, the cleric is hunting for Garadain, and finds him inside the fort standing there by himself. I'm down to the last two mobs, mind you this is only a few minutes into them showing up and fighting, and at the instant the final Cromrif dies, Garadain despawns. No timer, but as a matter of programming, my turn-in guy despawns. The rest of the warriors are still there, even to the point of the fort respawning to strictly ry'gorrs. I didn't see anything in the instructions or here to indicate that I had to turn in the head WHILE the war was still going on. So, for those of us who wanted to actually finish the war, and follow the spirit of the quest, we get bit pretty hard.

Also, the Coldheart NPC (to turn in the marching orders) is on a 24 hour turn around on The Nameless server, FYI. I did the war yesterday and lost because I thought it was at the giant fort for some reason and didn't get there before Garadain was dead.
Garadain's War? or Assassination?

All the posts I see here suggest that you go inside the fort, kill the Chief and high-tail it out of there before the war starts. Obviously not the way the quest was intended to be played, but I guess it's a nice short-cut for people always looking for short-cuts in life. Fair warning - before you attempt to solo this quest consider the amount of time you have spent getting rings 1-7 and decide if you would mind starting over.

I read the posts here and decided it should be no trouble to solo based upon what I've read. Turned in the marching orders and ran into the fort before the event spawned. Had a nice set of buffs up and a DS from potion. I attacked the Chief where I found him - was getting hit by him, 3 oracles and 2 giants if I recall. Anyway, I managed to kill the chief and 2 oracles. When the 3rd oracle reached 20% he fled and resisted my root spell. This caused all the army outside to rush me and I was killed before being able to loot Ry'Gorr's head. Summoned my corpse to GL and ran back. Of course the chief's corpse had poofed by then, but most of both armies were still in place. I went ahead and killed some of the mobs out in front of the fort just for grins. The Coldain will assist you, and may KS you as well. After a few minutes all the mobs despawned and the normal fort mobs respawned. So now I am back to hunting those silly Tundra Kodiaks to start the quest again.

Ok, so I could have pacified the mobs around the Chief, single pulled him, etc... My point here is that this is supposed to be a war and not an assassination attempt. I'm sure if you set up camp outside the fort, single pulling mobs and being assisted by the Coldain this quest would not be that hard and would be more fun in my opinion. At any rate, that is my plan after I complete the first 7 rings again.

I will post a follow up after attempting the quest in that manner.

Ok so I am now playing an untwinked bard on Morden Rasp. I am working on the ring quests and at 54 I wanted to do ring #8. I typically chant mobs down and figured I could solo this bit. This is what happened.

Turned in 7th ring to Glaicerbane got the orders.. turned around and handed in the orders to Gloradin. Then I fired up Selos Travel (lev, invis etc) and ran to the inside of the orc fort around near CC entrance and waited. Meanwhile I stopped travel and put up regular Selos. After the Chief and friends popped I lulled 3 and pulled Chief. He and Firbrand came at me. I charmed the Black (waste of time; chief is too fast to get much melee) and started chanting down Chief. He never landed a hit on me and was cake to bring down. Although an oracle or somthing inside was tossing the occasional nuke on me. I was at 70% when Chief turned to run and Black started making contact and I turned to finish him off with some more songs and added melee.. Well he hit the wall and was there for about 1 tick. Then he poofed! Gone! From track, from pets attacks, everywhere. I parked pet (for head start) ran around the wall as I sang Travel again to avoid more aggro from the mounting army, and still couldnt find him. I trained around most of the army for a while hoping to see him anywhere in zone and keep the dumb dwarves alive (Occasionally putting a charmed pet in to die to the Hoarde.) After about 5 mins of this I zoned hoping Chief would pop to spawn, well, he didn't. I lost the war to a pathing bug!! Currently petitioning it, but doubt any good will come of it. Anyway just for general information, this is very doable solo, or one small group with a luller/pacier. Just make sure you kill him before he hits the wall. /cry!

I forgot that I had the marching orders from about a year and a half ago in my bank so me and another rogue friend decided to go do it. With today's gear (I'm far from uber) it was beyond easy. I think I lost 20% life with everything beating on me.

We snuck in, popped duelist, I looted head and trained everything away and escaped. Waited for Gloridain to call out his troops and turned in head.

So pretty much, I think any 65+ rogue with avg gear and escape can easily solo this part.
easyest way to do it

Its easy turn in your ring get your orders turn them in. then run back to the fort you have plenty of time use spell invis or potion whatever go inside fort set up a good distance to the right or left of the 5 mobs inside the fort. pacify all but the chief (if you cant bring someone that can) pull chief and kill him he a total wuss. if you dont have anyone to paci or it is resisted dont freak out just remember to have a healer there just incase that happends and just kill them all the army out side wont bother you then after you loot head invis up head straight out the gate and turn in head

thanks for your post! i was just going to ask a friend or 2 to come help but figured i'd try this

i casted nature's serenity on Chief Ry`Gorr and all his guards got paxed, snare pulled killed in no time. soloed the quest up to this point for the instaclick ds ring in about 3-4 hours, would have been even quicker if i just bought the items in bazaar (had to buy the High Quality Tundra Kodiak Pelts tho they never dropped for me)

still definitley a very rewarding quest to do

edit: im a druid, this stacks with my other ds spells and also stacks with blessing of replenishment/oak. i have the vt pants (leggings of fiery might) and that is +5 ds and +5 regen, which does not stack with blessing of replenishment and this rings effect overwrite legs also. so this is definitley something cool for me. i will not continue the quest after step 8 because the last clicky wont stack with hp regen and just adds 2 more ds

Hey guys, let your paci person know not to go anywhere near the outside walls. They will aggro about 15 orcs who can see through the walls apparently. The best way is to wait in the building and paci from back in there.
Couple of things

A couple of things about this quest. First, be sure you turn in Ry'gorr chief's head as soon as possible to Garadin after he respawns near the fort. Second, the npc to hand the marching orders to, Gloradin Iceheart in the other coldain building, is on a 24-hour spawn. Be sure she's up before you gather everyone or anyone you want to help you on the quest.
Much easier than it sounds.

I just finished this part, and it was much easier than this makes it sound. I am only level 45 so the way I did it is pretty much how you could do it for any twink, since all I did was start the war and loot the head and turn it in.

I up my group by the spike that comes out of the ground to the right when you enter the Ry`Gorr Fort. My group was just a level 65 bst and a level 65 cleric.

Then I turned in my Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring into Garadain Glacierbane and received Marching Orders (Dain). I handed the Marching Orders (Dain) into Gloradin Coldheart when I was all set up to spawn Chief Ry'Gorr and start the war. After doing that I was fast enough to run back to my group at the Ry`Gorr fort before the mobs spawned, if you are unsure or paranoid you might not beat the spawn then make sure to go to Gulf of Guthank and pick up 2 Cloudy Potions before starting this quest (one for the trip to the Ry`Gorr camp and one for leaving). When the mobs spawned (about 1-2min after handing in the Marching Orders) I had the cleric pacify all the mobs (2 giants, Ry`Gorr Oracle, Firbrand the Black, and Chief Ry'Gorr), and then the bst single pulled Chief Ry'Gorr to the spike where my group was set up, and kill him. It took me and the bst about a min to kill him, and we didn't need any heals. Then we looted Chief Rygorr's Head and invised and ran out of the fort and up the hill right outside. There we saw Garadain Glacierbane peeking over the hill. We arrived just in time to hear him say "It is worse than I thought..." (I did not hand in head yet) we then followed him back a little ways from the camp and waited for him to say "TROOPS! FALL IN!!". Then I handed in Chief Rygorr's Head to Garadain Glacierbane instantly he despawns and I received faction and Velium Coldain Insignia Ring then his army spawns. (Note: if you are kos to thurg then get away as fast as you can, my cleric was kos and it looked like he was telefraged when these guys poped). My understanding is that if the battle starts before you give in the head then you must make sure the Coldain win the war, and that Garadain Glacierbane does not die, if he does all is lost and you must start from the beginning since you no longer have the ring. Also it is possible for people to steal this quest from you so make sure you are the first guy to turn in the head. I hope this make it a little more clear.

I was able to MQ the 8th ring for my Level 1 twink. I did rings 1-7 solo with my 65 pally all farily easily.

After I got my 7th ring I invised my twink and camped him inside the building with-inside the fort.

I turned in 7th ring the marching orders. Then procedded to kill the 4 mobs around Chief ry'gorr useing pacify pulling. Then pulled chief deep into the building and killed him. Logged onto my alt looted head. Invised and waited gardain to walk inside the fort and park himself jsut outside the actual building. Turned in head and got my 8th coldin ring.

My level was able to do turn in @ dubious faction with the dwarfs. Not sure if you could be KoS and do turn in though.

My Level 1 can use the clicky effect.
Sounds harder than it is.

As stated in the other posts, if you are 60+, it is easy to solo this. All you need to do is buff up, turn in ring to Garadain, then turn in the orders to the dorf in the next hut.

This causes the entire Rygorr fort to despawn. I expected the chief to spawn in his usual place upstairs. But, this was not the case. He spawned with a group of orcs and giants right inside the outer gate. He was DB to me (63 SK) and the rest were lb. Needless to say, he came alone. I pulled him to the side of the courtyard and dispatched him, loted, and left. Do it fast enough, and you can leave before the rest of the fort pops.

Go find Garadain and follow him. You won't be able to turn in the head until he respawns. That's the same time that a plethora of dorfs will fall from the sky and prepare to charge the fort. Just turnin, and you're done. Just leave or watch all the dorfs die a horrible painful death.

Agree with parent post. Here's the timeline:

0:00 Hand in 7th ring to Garadain Glacierbane, receive marching orders.
0:00 Hand in marching orders to Gloradin Coldheart in next hut, war script begins.
Run to orc fort, war mobs spawn, pull Chief inside, kill him, loot his head, invis, run back out to Garadain.
4:08 Garadain takes a peek at the fort and groans, 'It is worse than I thought...' and walks back away from the fort a ways.
6:18 Garadain respawns and says 'TROOPS! FALL IN!!' -- zonewide message I think.
Once that happens you may hand in the Chief's head to Garadain. He will despawn and you will receive a shiny new 8th ring!
If you haven't handed in the Chief's head yet:
7:43-11:30 Garadain pep-talks the troops.
14:48 Garadain Glacierbane shouts 'For the Glory of Thurgadin! CHARGE!!'
Bloodshed ensues.

As a 65 Bard I was able to solo this entire quest from ring 1 through 8 in about 3 hours. Hardest part was getting the HQ Kodiak pelts, while looking for those I did other various things like helping Tain, spawning Warden Bruke, and the other minor timesinks for the quest. Pretty simple all told though.
soloable

I was able to just about solo the entire ring quest up to the 8th part. The 7th part I was able to do with 2 people. On #7 I had my druid and my friends bard. Once the little dwarf spawned the stuff I had my friend bash the dwarf and run him to iceclad and run circles. Then took care of the stuff tht had spawned, killing it one at a time. When I was on the last one I had him zone. Once the last one died the dwarf started his slow walk to the dwarf huts. Friend zoned back, we followed it, and bam got #7.

As for #8, hardest part if waiting for gloridain to spawn. Think its stupid on SOE's part to have her on a 24hr spawn time. Guess they feel the hardest challeges of the game should be to beat other players to a quest mob *shrugs*.

I was able to solo most of the 9th ring mobs, but I did need help with Julia Lockheart in Thurgadain.
Easy win

I have done this several times. Last night I did it with 3 people. Could have just as easily done it alone if the ring was for me. (65 ranger, 7k hp and 300 AA. Bring a group Chief in this fight is Dk blue to me and tougher than the regular one but not terrible. I got one heal over time during fight) I went in and cleared the fort of all mobs. The ranger doing the war did the turn ins and immediately invised and joined the cleric and I at the fire inside the fort. As soon as the chief spawned I harmonied those surrounding the chief, pulled the chief into the fort and killed him. We invised and ran out. Ranger turned head in to Garadain, Grats on 8th ring. Took about 15 minutes to clear fort, spawn the war and kill the chief.

Ok you cannot wait to turn in the ring while he barks orders to his troops... why? well how do you start the war exactly unless you plan on doing the first 7 steps at least twice to get a second ring to hold on to. This is because in order to get the marching orders it is required you turn in the ring. Poof leaving you... ringless. My problem is that when i ran out of orc fort there were no dorfs... and alllll the orcs and giants save for chief were alive and well and undamaged. Odd dont you think? Well this does pose the problem of now im unable to turn in the head. He hands it back and says he doesnt want it...

There is a mistake in that post. The first part where it says "ring" is meant to be "head" as the head is what you turn in to get your ring. If you read further down you'll see that it talks about turning in the head.

Did the 8th ring step by step...Looted the head----ran to Garadain and he was not there. He popped and I attempted turn in ---No ring. A little while later a second garadain popped --I attempted turn in and still no ring-----What happened----I petitioned the problem and there has not been a GM on in 12 hours---Damn---2 Garadains in hut at the same time and I do not get a ring

You don't turn the ring in to garadain in the hut. You turn it in to him before he charges the orc fort. He walks out about half way between the orc fort and the prison area and gives his speech...then all the men run up to the hill and he walks up. Then he orders his men to charge and you give him the ring.

The reason for this is because the way the quest was intended was that you would follow Garadain around while he orders his troops...and then you would rush in when he rushes in and kill the orc chief, kill all the other orcs and then turn the head in before he despawns. Most people kill the chief first though, so they just have to find Garadain to turn in the head. After he despawns and respawns in the hut you are no longer able to turn the head in. You could start a new war and turn your head in by doing the 8 steps over...but since he despawns you don't get anything extra out of it.

The best place to wait for him is on top of the hill right as you come out of the orc fort behind the tree that sits on top of the hill. He'll walk nearly right up to it and stop then order his men to charge.

Welcome to the world of SoE longest standing bugs contest. This bug has been around for at least two years and has been reported in-game, in the forums and via email, live chat and phones hundreds of times. I'm awaiting GM escalation on this very issue myself.
Hope this helps someone . .

The spawn time on Gloradain is 24 hours. If she is not up make some inquiries to the zone about when she was killed. This may provide some information about when you should start camping her, if you so decide. Good luck!
