    You say, 'Hail, Master Rixiz'

Master Rixiz says 'You are on the grounds of the Brood of Kotiz. If you do not belong, you must leave at once. There shall be no [third rank skullcap] for you.'

You say, 'What third rank skullcap?'

Master Rixiz says 'I offer the third rank apprentice skullcap to those who wear the second. If that is you, then you will do the [bidding of the tower].'

You say, 'I will do the bidding of the tower.'

Master Rixiz says 'Take this glass canopic. Within it you shall place a brain for me. The brain I seek is that of a sarnak crypt raider. Any shall do. The ones we seek should be near the Lake of Ill Omen. When you obtain the brain, you must quickly put it into the glass canopic with [embalming fluid]. When these are combined, the canopic shall seal and if you return it to me with your second rank skullcap, I shall hand you the next and final skullcap.'

    You say, 'What embalming fluid?'

Master Rixiz says 'Embalming fluid is created through brewing, but do not drink it!! You can learn about the process of brewing on our grounds.'

Once I had the embalming fluid in hand, I went back and obtained the Brood Canopic container (2 slots, no drop), placed the embalming fluid in it and went off to find the mean nasty mob that drops the brain. Combining the embalming fluid with the brain yields a "Preserved Sarnak Brain."

Master Rixiz says 'You shall get no skullcap until I have the preserved raider brain and your second circle apprentice skullcap.'

    [Hand him both items.]

Master Rixiz says 'You have done well. Here is your final apprentice skullcap.'

Your faction standing with Brood Of Kotiz got better.
Your faction standing with Legion Of Cabilis got better.
    You gain experience!!
You receive 10 gold from Master Rixiz.

in reference to a post below, smithing merchant in East Cabilis has the forging hammer... along with numerous others. This is on Phinny progression Luclin era (I'd be surprised to hear it wasn't available during Kunark).

Just in case anyone is doing this quest the forging hammer for the granite bone powder is no longer sold. Or at least the vendors i checked don't sell it. You have to either kill a skeletal worker(The Overthere) or possibly the dwarven smith(Crushbone). I am not sure on the smith, but i did just kill the worker and looted it, was quicker to get to.

    - Crypt Raider spawned around the loc given by others here +1500, 0 , He spawned at game time 1:00pm so I dont think time is the issue -

Go to the second island, make sure all the mosquitos are kept down and the escaped will pop. Be ready with snare and pet, because they wander off fast. lol

Just kill everything EXCEPT the frogloks. It seems that every mob will attack and kill them so if you keep the mosquitos, leeches and skeletons dead you will get the escaped to pop fairly quickly. For my first one I killed the skippers and escorts and it took forever to get the first shackle. When I killed everything else, the escaped popped in 8 minutes. I was using a tracker though... this is a huge help.

I found two escaped froglocks in the Swamp newbee yard by just killing everything that moved, focusing on skeeters and frogs. It took me two nights, because the first night I explord the islands a fair amount.

If you have the GOD expansion and can reach the boat in the Abysmal Sea (I waited until 15 to use the Adventure Camp Magus's), you can get the needed tradeskills (brewing and smithing) to 54 for free using the instructors there.

This quest is BROKEN (on Druzzil ro at least) as of 9/25/04...

The Froglok you need to get the pebbles that is used in the embalming fluid is no longer spawning.

I searched for several hours with a 65 guildie druid and we killed everything we could.

Just go camp about 30-40 plat in the Warrens which is easy with the bronze weapons and ringmail from teeth quests. Raise your smithing skill to 21 with training points then raise it to 50 using small block of ore/file/water then at 37 use metal bits/lantern mold/water/bottle to get it to 50 or a little higher if you want. Just remember to sell what you make and it won't take much more than 15-20pp but you'll need more plat for the brewing. Buy 5 stacks of barley/hops/cask/water then after you're at 21 from training points goto any brew barrel and just combine it all. You'll waste the pebbles if you fail the bone dust combine but the brewing combine is safe because you get the dust back on failure. The Sarnak crypt raider I found very near to the explorer tower like everyone else, took me like 15 minutes. Good luck...

Here is a helpful hint for those whose trade skills may be lacking and you don't want to waste the granite pebbles in a smithing attempt.

Once you turn in the shackles to the Toilmaster the granite pebbles you receive are not No Drop

So, find a friend or guild member who is a high level smith and brewer, give the granite pebbles and all the other components to him or her and they can make the embalming fluid for you. It is not a no drop item.

If the fluid is no drop, then shouldn't you make it yourself? Update: Just did the embalming fluid. The dust from smithing the pebbles is no drop, lore, and no rent. The fluid can be traded.

Get lucky or raise smithing skill

When it comes to making the bone granite powder you have two choices:

    1) Get lucky - Collect the shackles for the pebble quest, combine the required components, and hope Cazic smiles upon your efforts and rewards you with the bone granite powder. If this fails see option 2.

    2) Raise your smithing skill to at least 40, although I read the combine trivial is near 50.

I went for option 1 and failed the combine (twice) with a smithing skill around 20 and 27. When you fail the smithing combine you lose all the components. I'm sure I don't need to mention how long it takes to get two more shackles from the escaped froggies.

After failing twice, I raised my skill (see option 2) to 40 and was able to successfully combine the items on two occasions.

I wish the forging part worked like the brewing part. If you fail the brewing combine you at least get your bone granite powder back. You only lose your rubbing alcohol and your bog juices.

    Fare thee well...

Hello all, first time posting. Just adding my 2cp. I have tried this tactic 5 times and have succeeded every time. This will probably work best if your necro is not your primary character. I have found a spot at loc 696,2669 where the escaped froglok is ALWAYS stuck when I log on. I tried a few time of clearing the island and waiting for the pop....frustrating! What I ahve found is that if I find a place to camp for the night....log back on , eh ..whenever. The reason I say stuck is the escaped froglok can be found bouncing between two trees at loc 696, 2669. Why? I don't know...maybe a pathing error. But I have tried this 5 times now and he's been there every time. This will probably be effective as long as it takes the word to spread. I believe the reason it works is because everytime I log on I'm the only one in the zone...SoNH is very underused! Just a tactic to keep in you bag of tricks. If you get tired of clearing the island hoping for a pop and log out, make loc 696,2669 your first stop when logging back on. Just a note, it's always been at least a few hours or up to a day between log on attempts for this. I don't believe it is a matter of just "clearing aggro" I think it takes some time for one escaped froggy to get caught in this pathing error.

    RE: granite pebbles
    # Jul 23 2002 at 5:52 PM Rating: Default
to get those granite pebbles that you want you have to go to Swamp Of No Hope and kill escaped froglocks and they drop busted froglock shackles and you need to get 2 of those and return them to the tulmaster and he will give you granite 1 granite pebbles. The escaped froglocks spawn from when you kill 4 froglock escorts and the escorts drop a pie (food) and a no flute (bard instrument).

The tower is no longer empty. It is now filled with about 8 "Explorers" (basically Firiona Vie scum).

I really lucked out. My SK was heading down to hunt Explorers. I was just getting ready to summon a pet, when the crypt raider walked right in front of me. I killed it and ran my necro down and looted the body. So, basically this was a zero time camp for me.

    That pesky Sarnak Crypt Raider

I just finished this quest this morning (Nov. 01, '01).

I suggest making your embalming fluid first. There are some good posts here that explain how to do it.

Secondly, it's time to settle in for a long camp (if you're unlucky). I started camping the Crypt Raider at level 12.

Go to the Lake of Ill Omen, and go to /loc +1500, 0. You will see an abandoned tower and a tree nearby. Bring up a pet, and have a seat near the tree. Keep the Lake to your back. I recommend hitting F9 a few times to keep an eye out for the wandering mobs. You'll see blue-red stuff wandering by. The yellows won't be too much of a problem for you with your new spells, but just be careful. Most of the time I just wandered out of their aggro range to stay ready for the Crypt Raider to spawn...

....which he didn' I would whack the occasional wanderer. I got to level 13 just killing the wanderers.

I spent probably a total of 15 hours sitting at that very spot, when <<pop>> here's the Crypt Raider right in front of me. Was blue to me at 13. Took him out easily, and got the brain.

I don't think that there's a placeholder for this guy because I never saw anything else spawn in that spot. I hope you're luckier than I was. The only thing that kept me going was the allure of getting the higher skullcaps with the +int modifiers.

    Viola. 3rd rank skullcap.

    # Sep 10 2001 at 5:59 PM Rating: Default
Ask any Iksar SK doing their Origins of Pain Quest how hard he is to find. we see more froggies in the swamp than anyone. Simple. Don't hang out in the newbie area zas they are a rare spawn there. They do NOT have placeholders and are not a rare spawn. they spawn early morning (game time) near the bandit camp the SK's hang out around when doing Origins of Pain. Easy quest.

Hopefully someone finds this helpful, even though the other posts here are very helpful already - I always make it a point to read comments about quests on this site before doing a quest, as I have found it saves me an enormous amount of time (in fact I wouldn't even know what the **** to do without the comments here).

So I was actually not even attempting to do this quest when I started it. I was hunting in LoIO for xp and for the Words I need to research Hungry Earth - still haven't found those :\. I had set up my solo camp to the left of 4P, facing the Lake, just on the other side of the first Ruins that mark the mobs to be a bit lower in level. Suddenly, right in front of me pops the Crypt Raider. I am not sure what time it was - just that it was dark, and hadn't been for too long. I didn't see him coming, so I don't know if he spawned there by the lake or not, but I think he did. I killed him very easily (for my 17th level Necro) and of course, got the brain. I was a bit concerned at this point because I remembered that Master Rixiz had said to put the brain "immediately" into the jar and combine it with the embalming fluid, since I wasn't even working on that quest, I didn't even have any of the items needed for the stuff, and didn't even know at the time how to make it. So I looted the brain anyway and immediately gated back to Cab (losing a great pet who I'd equipped with a 36pp halberd, he ruled with double attacks for 28 hehe). I ran to the bank to dig up the embalming fluid instructions and blinked at the scroll a few times. I realized that I would have to log and come here to see what the **** I needed to do next...

So I logged back in, still had the brain since it is not no-rent, and ran to SoNH. I swam out to the first island, killing everything on it, and when I reached the end of the path on the other side of the island, right in my face popped the escaped froglok - literally. I had just enough time to target him and hit /pet attack before he jumped into the water and disappeared, with my pet saying "that is not a legal target". I figured maybe I would have some luck on the next island, so swam there. As soon as I reached it, my pet was saying "Taunting attacker" and there was the silly frog, dead of course. Got the first shackles. I waited for a little while on that island, killing everything around the path - venturing further looked risky because I conned a scourgefly red at the end of the path - and decided to head back to the first island where I'd seen the first escaped froglok. Got there and for about half an hour, killed everything I saw on the island. Just as I was getting frustrated, at the end of the path, again, but this time standing to the left of it, exactly where I'd just killed a froklok tad, was another escaped. Killed him quick and got the last shackle. I decided to risk having only 2 of them, with no backup for a possible forge failure because I wasn't sure if the brain was going to be too old for the quest.

Before I left SoNH I bought the snake scales from the vendor on the second floor of the first ruins to the right, with the Cab zone at my back.

I then went to Toilmaster, and exchanged the shackles for powder. Ran to the Necro guild and loaded as many points as I could into smithing and brewing - I already had points in smithing from sharpening weaps - and I think the max amount I was allowed to put into brewing was 10 or 15. Ran to the Mortician and got the Rubbing Alcohol before heading to the Warrior guild. After I got the Forging Hammer, I ran to the Brewing Barrel next to the bank, stopping to buy 2 bottles from the vendor right there, and proceeded to try to brew the Bog Juice. "You cannot combine these items in this container type" Bah! I thought. What the ****?? So upon double checking, I realized that my water was not regular water, but Bloodwater. In fact I found the only place to find regular water is from the vendor in the Warrior guild where I bought the Forging Hammer from. So trried again, and voila, made the 2 Bog juices without a hitch. Then ran to the Forge and was succesfu in making the Bone Granite Powder the first try, also getting a message saying I cannot increase my skill level making this item - my skill had to be around 15, so it's pretty easy to make. Ran back to the Brewing Barrel and made the Embalming fluid easily. Combined the braind and the fluid together and presto! it worked. Handed the thing to Master Rixiz with my 2nd Rank Cap, and got a blue bub of xp, and the 3rd Rank Cap. A very easy quest, and I was relieved to know that you don't have to "immediately" combine the brain with the embalming fluid once you loot it from the Crypt Raider.
On the the 4th Rank Cap now! Finally these will get to be more worth while...Good luck to all, and I hope you find this helpful.

Soulseethe's information about the forging part of this quest is inaccurate. I've attempted three times at skills of 18, 21 and 28 and have failed all three times... each time without getting the 'you can no longer gain skill...' message. I know that it's trivial at 51 (from another necro doing the quest ahead of me) but be ready to sink some platinum into smithing before attempting this.

Perhaps more importantly, be aware that the result of the smithing portion of the quest results in a No Drop, No Rent item. In other words, don't attempt the smithing until you've gotten the Sarnak brain.

I think that the Escaped Frogloks have to be on some kind of a timer. Of the six I've killed, three were in the messed-up-pathing spot on the first island (you'll know it when you see it), one was just east of Cabilis along the northern edge of the zone, one was running full speed along the path on the first island (heading toward Cab, barely caught him) and another was roaming the hillside west of the first island. Each one dropped a shackle. I have spent a COPIOUS amount of time hunting these things and generally don't recommend attempting this quest. If you are determined to frustrate yourself, however, I believe that there is a burst of Froglok spawning on the first island early in the morning (game time) and that that is generally when the escapees spawn. Perhaps more importantly - they always spawn in pairs, so if you've just killed one, hang around and keep sharp because another is probably not very far behind.

As far as the Sarnak Crypt Raider goes, he spawns at exactly +1500, 0 in Lake of Ill Omen and heads east at a brisk pace immediately after spawning. It's a heavily trafficked zone (particularly on PvP) and you'll need to be careful if you're less than around 15th level. I camped the spot for about four full game days before he spawned. To put that in perspective, I've spent 15 hours hunting Escaped Frogloks (though I was in the wrong place for a chunk of that time.)

    Good luck

    Hi Soulseethe here again,

Actually my skill was in fact only 15. I think it is very possible that you had the wrong hammer, resulting in repeated failure of the forging. A common mistake that I hope people catch onto before spending a lot of plat on this.

I think Varthorne is most likely right. Using the wrong hammer simply tells you "these items do not combine in this container".

My Necro had 1 failure on the bone granite powder. I bought another pile of pebbles from a friend, then 1 success at smithing skill 14 (got a skill rise to 15), but I didn't realise this was NORENT, so I logged for an hour or so and it was GONE when I got back. More time wasted running around the Swamp got me another 2 shackles, then SUCCESS at skill 15, and another skill rise to 16.

However, once you've made the Embalming Fluid, this isn't no-rent, so my necromancer is currently carrying it in one of the 2 slots of the Combine jar for this, and is camped near the Lake; I plan to Track the raider and snare and root him near there, then log out to the Necromancer, so he can handle the kill and the looting.

That sounds like a good plan. I'll take Cilrasis to +1500, 0 and wait there, while I have my druid run around and check things out. I have lots of friends hunting in LoIO so I won't be bored with a 39 druid. He has everything except the brain, and he is bound at the soulbinder to bounce around the zones around Cabilis...

I have a skill of 26 in smithing, and I've failed 3 times on a row on the bone granite powder.

You have to combine: 1 bone chip, 1 bone chip, 1 forging hammer, 1 granite pebble

I've been camping those !@#$ escaped froglocks all day now and after 3 failures I'm getting desperate. Has anyone been able to do this god-forsaken quest recently?

This is on the sullon zek server?

    Escaped Frogloks and Shackles

I left Cablis and proceeded east to the newbie area. Then I continued following the path leading east, crossing the water, onto the island with the pillar. My pet and I killed everything in sight across the island for about an hour. This started about 6-8PM game time.

Saw a Crusader moving deliberately across the island, so being bored, I followed him. This led me to other parts of the Swamp where I slaughtered some tuks and critters for experience.

Came back to the island at exactly 8AM gametime. Killed a skellie and froglok fisher, and heard another froglok moving nearby. Looked up and caught sight of the escaped froglok in a tree, moving swiftly to the east. This location was about midway east-west on the island, and slightly south of the stone path.

He was very fast, and if not for my pet chasing him down, I don't think I could have caught him.
Zartik beat him down at the end of the island (east side) near the fallen pillar. Looted the shackle from him. No drop (but not No-Rent).

If they spawn two at a time, it's quite possible that I missed his buddy, since I barely caught sight of the one I got. Not sure if he had a placeholder or appeared automatically, but either way, 8AM is definitely the time to find them.

Going back for shackle #2, and then to Ill Omen for the sarnak crypt raider.

If you have a good ranger buddy you can convince to travel to the Swamp, I'd definitly do that.

    Good Luck...

Well I have to say that everything that is posted here is absolutly true. My story and finding the elusive crypt raider is a bit entertaining, so if you want to, read on...

following directions and after 3 attempts at making the embalming fluid I sat out in the lake of ill omen for about 1 hour and 15 minutes waiting for this dude to pop. so i'm taking some goblins out with my lvl 12 pet and i con a battlemaster yellow, and he jumped us, so to save my exp i sacaraficed my pet and gated back to the outpost and started to run back. as i got half way i recieved a tell, "hurry i found one, hes by the ruins on the lake" so i hauled ****, unfortunaly trained the same yellow battlemaster to the person who sent me the tell.. sorry about that.. we both died.. so i knew the raider was still up.. running buck nekked to my corpse with 2 spells memorized i found him, give him some heat blood and a few lifedraws and that took him to about 1/4 health by the time the heat blood wore off and drained just enough mana that i couldnt cast again.. so here i was duking it out with him mano'a'mano. wasnt happening.. i knew soon we'd pick up someone else and not only would i lose my brain, but more exp. so i quick sat down and memorized some low level spells and got enough mana to pull a few off.. so i hit him with a poisonbolt, 2 lifespikes, and the good ol' one two and i now have a preserved sarnak brain.. thanks to everyone here, and a little necro by the name of primadonna.. thanks

and just my 2 cents.. there are good quests in this game.. they actually make you use all your skills, and not only raise the exp of your character, but raise the play exp of you, the controller. i liked this quest.. little annoying at times, but all in all, i'm not only a better brewer and smith, but i'm also a better player.

the mortician sells the needed rubbing alcohol and a scroll about the embalming fluid recipe. a quick glance and enough time to forget the details probably left more ppl than just yourself confused on what he sells. (btw, you can buy snake scales from at least one vendor in each of the 4 zones outside of cab, so you have plenty of cheap supplies for your young brewing career(my chanter mastered brewing with about 40-50pp and 2 hrs of my time, its a really easy cheap skill to master).) hope that helps with some of the confusion. ;)

Also, the esaped froglok for the shackles spawn at 8am on an island straight off from the entrance to Swamp of No Hope. Follow trail straight passed the pillars and swim in the water til you get on the island. At 8am (game time)he will spawn on the right side in between 2 trees.

I camped the Sarnak Crypted Raider for 3 days and found him with a friend one time when we were given up. Got the brain and combined everything but to my stupidity, I forgot to hand in my skullcap and had to do the quest again. Argg Anyways, I went back and waited for him in the same spot. He walks the same trail everytime but I did not get a loc (sorry). He spawns only during the day around 10am to 6pm and on the hill by the building, face away from the lake and look to your right side. There is a big pasture that is covered by hills. The Sarnak will walk right through this pasture and over the hill. Get him in the pasture cause he seems to despawn when he walks over the hill towards the small stream. Hope this info helps for you guys.

Ok last night I finally finished the quest. The hardest part was making the stupid embalming fluid. It took me 2 tries and failed at making the bone granite powder with a skill of 1 in smithing. Put 10 points in and tried 3 times and succeded on the 3rd try. Thank god you get the powder back if you fail at brewing the embalming fluid! Took me 4 tries before I finally made the embalming fluid with a brewing skill of 1. I made a bunch of bog juices before this too since I figured I would fail and had a 60% success rate of making those. You might want to dump more points into smithing and brewing if you don't want to do a bunch of running around.

Other posts mention escaped frogloks in the title. You must loot 2 escaped froglok shackles and take them to the Toilmaster in East Cabilis and he rewards you with a pile of granite pebbles. Then make the bone granite powder as per the recipie. I used the forge outside the entrance to the warrior guild in cabilis and the merchant standing next to it sells the forge hammer for making the powder.

sorry for pointing out your inability to discern between mob rarity and drop rarity. i've killed the crypt raider about 5 times with various chrs i've spent lvling time with at loio. every singal one of them dropped a brain, making me believe that; yes, in fact this is a very common DROP. yet after weeks of wandering about loio with multiple chrs, i've only ever seen this MOB 4 or 5 times tops, making this a relatively rare spawning mob, always in the aforementioned spawn local mentioned earlier in numerous posts. (just a bit of fyi for all of you out there goin on about how long and annoying this camp is, pls just forget about doing higher lvl quests right away. for instance, j boots. you need to camp the Ancient Cyclops in sro, it doesn't have a definate spawn location or cycle(can take anywhere from 30 mins to too many hrs for it to spawn), factor in the high ks rate on this thing along with its relatively higher lvl and difficulty to kill, and you got a real frustrating quest camp. its more than enough to make you wish you just had to sit in loio for a few hrs to take out a low lvl sarnak spawn. just my 2 copper though. hehe ;p

Why won't he spawn? I'd probably be 6 levels higher if it weren't for the hours I've spent sitting around waiting for this guy! Is there something you need to do to make him spawn? What makes things worse is that I'll be sitting there waiting, and then I'll see a sarnak youth or a sarnak flunkie, and it will get my hopes up, only to be crushed. The only good thing that's come out of this is that my begging skill has gone up 20 points because I sit there and beg my pet for hours while I'm waiting.

Augh! Are you sure there's no trigger to make him show up? This is so annoying!

I bounced through several messages attemptin to gather all the

information I needed for this quest. Just my opinion, but this quest

completely sucks. =) I spent several hours reading messages and

looking for what was required, and then due to the NO RENT item

disappearing on me once I had to partial complete the quest again. I'm

hoping I can save future people who do this quest some time by

outlining specifics and such. It's not perfect, just my version. =)

Start with Master Rixiz in your Necro temple, middle floor. Acquire

the Glass Canopic when you tell them you want the quest.

    Crypt Raider:

I give credit to Nanto for this one. To summarize, hunt around the

small tower at +1700, -50. It took me about 30min to find one roaming.

At L17 when I did this quest a lot of stuff was blue to me in the

lands, but tons of people were hunting there (130+) and the Crypt

Raider was green to me. Kill and retrieve brain. =)

Busted Froglok Slave Shackles (x2), found on escaped frogloks
This one threw me for a loop, everywhere I read for the most part said

"2nd isle" but I roamed everywhere in this zone looking for such.

Killed some stuff that was blue to me, ran from stuff that was red..

then went back to the newbie grounds and followed the right path out

from Cabalis that runs by the pillars. Swam through the water and up

to the path as it continued. This general area is where I hunted.

    Finding escaped frogs:
(NPC bugged pathing, Swamp of No Hope, +732, +2667)
This was the only place I ever saw them when they did spawn, they

simply run back and forth between the 2 trees. I killed everything in

    the area until they spawned.

Side note: Verant probably will never fix this pathing error but the

hillside just to the right of the area "traps" a ton of stuff up on the

ledge, in fact at +1051, + 3174 I found one escaped frog. When I had

to do this quest a 2nd time because of the NO RENT portion I had both

shackles needed within 20min after clearing the hillside and going back

    into the woods.

    Toil Master
(East Cabalis - near long stone bridge, +826, -41)
Give 2 broken shackles to receive "Pile of Granite Pebbles"
Note: This is the default spawn area he can be found in, although he

tends to roam when frogloks roam. I found the 3 froglok slaves he

normally resides over and he wasn't around so I killed them. You can

kill these frogs anytime with no retribution, I believe. About 15min

later the Toil Master and his 3 frogs spawned at the above mentioned

location once I had killed all 3 frogloks.

    Forging Hammer:
    Weaponsmith Grugal
(East Cabilis - near warrior guild, -422, -35)

    Creating the Bog Juice:
    1 water flask
    1 snake scale
    1 Bottle
[Combine] in a Brew Barrel (next to Bank in East Cabalis)

Note: I had put 15 points into training for Brewing so I thought I

would be ok. After attempting to combine several of these and getting

    the following message:

You have fashioned the items together to create an alternate product.

And getting an empty bottle back, and skill in Brewing not raising, I

camped and went to the Chat area to ask about Brewing being bugged.

Not taking into consideration the *granite powder* I had made in a

forge was NO RENT it decided to go *PooF* when I logged to get some

help. =( Back to previous steps to get shackles again. =/

I later found out from guild members when they logged on that this is

Verants way of returning items to you when you failed.

** Don't do the following steps UNTIL you have the rest of what is

    required **

    Place in Forge:
    Pile of Granite Pebbles
    Forging Hammer
    1 bone chip
    1 bone chip (separate slot)
Hit [Combine] and receive: Bone Granite Powder (***NO RENT)

    So now you should have:
    Bone Granite Powder
    Bog Juice (x2)
    Rubbing Alcohol (x1)

Return to the Brew Barrel next to the bank, place each item in a

separate slot. Make sure to separate the Bog Juice. Hit [Combine] and

you should now have Embalming fluid.

    So you should now have:
    Embalming fluid
    Crypt Raider Brain

Place both these items in the jar container and hit [Combine] and you

should now have a [ Preserved Sarnak Brain ].

Return this last item to claim your boobey prize!

Summarized tips from various other messages:

    Embalming Fluid:
Rubbing alcohol can be purchased from the mortician in West Cabilis.

    Bog Juice:
Snake scales can be purchased from a merchant just outside Cabilis in

the Swamp of No Hope. Flasks of water can be purchased in West Cabilis.

Bottles can be purchased from a merchant standing next to the brew

barrel by the bank. The bottle is returned to you upon failure.

There are plenty of How-To's on raising Brewing and Smithing so I won't

go into it, however at L17 I had racked a ton of training points and

put as many into Brewing and Smithing as I could without paying

anything and then went at it for the required Brewing / Smithin parts.

I smithed both times with success, I had to Brew several times to get

    the Bog juices.

    Hope this editorial helps!

not a bad walk through, although i do disagree with your statement that this quest sucks. if you wish to continue with the skull cap quests, this is a definately needed quest, plus for low lvls this aint that bad, its 4ac (same as a tailored crytalline silk head piece, which you need a skill lvl in the 90's or higher to make with any lvl of success, not to mention the fact that you need to kill decently higher lvl spiders to get the silks. only real difference between the 2 is that this weighs slightly more and looks pretty cool.) so when you factor in that your combined smithing and brewing lvls are less than the tailoring skill that you need to make an item of similar stats, this aint so bad. plus verant likes to make ppl put forth some effort into their chrs, including trade skill developement. so even though this is not meant towards the above poster personally, but as a general statement to the many lost cause players out there, trying to lvl at break neck speeds; rpg's invlove chr, skill, and story developement. so pls take off the tunnel vision twink glasses and look a little deeper before labeling a quest a waste of time or pointless just because you dont get uber gear from it in your teens. *throws 2 more copper into the opinion fountain, and awaits the repercussions

I found the hardest part of this quest was getting the NPCs to spawn. I also spent 4 points on brewing and spent quite a bit of $$ on rusty weapons & sharpening stones to build the forging skill to 15. After combining the items, I left with brewing(6) & forging(16). I used this guide exclusively as well as referring to the strategy guide for skill levels for the recipes. This was a hard quest that took way too much time...but I suppose it's ok since the future skullcaps will be well worth the hassle this one presented.

    Finished Quest
    # Oct 23 2000 at 1:03 PM Rating: Good
Well, I finished this quest over the weekend and will add my 2cp to the other posts. The most informative/helpful post is from Nanto on 7/14.

For the escaped frogloks, I just went to the first island south of the newbie area and just killed everything on the island (i.e., from leeches, to misquitos, to skels, etc.). This killing included all the frogloks including the froglok escort. Everything that moved was dead. Did this for about 30 minutes and an escaped froglok showed up every time. Just run up and down the path and kill everything and you will see one soon enough. I know this works as I had to do it a couple times (see below).

I stayed in the lake until I had 4 froglok shackels. Went into town and hoped to get the bone granite powder from the forge on my first try. TWO BIG NOTES: I was worried about a failure, since the smithing hammer cost 12pp. I asked a high level char to make it for me. NOTE 1: The Smithing hammer is the wrong hammer. I was wondering why they would make an item cost so much for low level quest and found out that there is a difference between a Smithing Hammer and a Forging Hammer. The Forging Hammer is required and only costs approx. 1sp. I lost the Smithing Hammer in the failed combine and made a 12pp mistake. NOTE 2: The high level char made it for me on the second try with the Forging Hammer but the bone powder is no drop so he couldn't give it to me.

I went back to the swamp and got two more shackles like above and trained my smithing and brewing skills to approximately 21 and was successful on my first try at making both the embalming fluid and the bone granite powder.

The location for the Sarnak Crypt Raider given by Nanto is also correct. Found one after camping for approx. 45 min. Killed everything around and it showed up. Went there with a small group of 3 (lvls 15-17). Most everything was low blue and green but there are some greater skels and mid-level goblins around that may jump you so I was happy to be grouped although it is quite possible to do it solo. The Crypt Raider was an easy kill though.

Follow this and this will be an fairly easy quest to complete.

There are escaped frogloks and escaped froglok slaves. They're both the same thing. I've noticed something though about the spawn. If you kill off all the creatures on the island right after the newbie area. Then sometimes it will spawn in the area on the right of the path between 2 trees. There's something about these trees that cause the MOBs to get stuck and just keep walking back and forth between them. I've gotten 5 shackles from the frogloks i killed there. Also the spawn seems to happen between 4-6am Gametime. But if they get stuck then they stay there for much longer (until they're killed?)

To Dr. Evil: say "I will do the bidding of the tower".

To Chililsis: Most of the items in this quest are no drop. To get Granite Pebbles, take two (2) Broken Shackles from Escaped Froglok Slaves and give them to the Toilmaster (who is near the Shaman/SK guild).

I'm doing these quests at level 45, mostly because I got too frustrated trying to find Escaped Froglock Slaves during my earlier levels. Anyway, I got my Smithing to 48 and my Brewing to 38 before trying to make the items. Succeeded with the Bone Granite Powder (which is No Drop) and the Embalming Fluid on the first try.

To get the Escaped Froggies to spawn, I just killed everything on the second island.

The easiest way to get Smithing up, if you can't find rusty weapons, is to make Metal Bits (2 small pieces of ore + flask of water) to skill level 21. Then use the Metal Bits to make Scalers (metal bit + scaler mold + flask of water) (Scalar Molds sold at middle building next to bank). When you run out of metal bits, instead of making more, make Steel Boning (small brick of ore + file + flask of water) to skill level 41. File (metal bit + file mold + flask of water) (File Mold sold at Warrior guild). The File is not consumed when making the Steel Boning. Then if you want to go higher than skill level 41, make Sheet Metal (2 small bricks of ore + flask of water). I don't know when Sheet Metal becomes trivial, but it's higher than 48.

Flasks of water can be bought at a vendor near the Necro guild.
