Find Master Xydoz in the Tower of Death and ask him about the Second Rank Skullcap.

    You say, 'Hail, Master Xydoz'

Master Xydoz says 'What is it you seek within the tower? Could it be that you are a new apprentice? If so, you are required to don the [apprentice skullcap].'

You say, 'Tell me about the second rank skullcap'

Master Xydoz says 'Looking for the second rank skullcap? Look no further, but be prepared to earn it. I seek a [faded tapestry]. Now, too, so do you.'

    You say, 'What faded tapestry?'

Master Xydoz says 'I have heard reports of such a thing found upon sarnak hatchlings. They must have scampered from the safety of their dwelling with their master's property. I would like to see this tapestry, but only when it has been mended. I need to find a necromancer who is [adept at tailoring].'

You say, 'I am adept at tailoring'

Master Xydoz says 'If you are a member of the Brood and wish to assist, you may seek out this tapestry. Find the torn and ripped pieces and take them both to a sewing kit. Return with the mended tapestry and your first rank skullcap and I shall see that you are rewarded with coin and a second rank skullcap.'

You need to acquire two pieces of the now-destroyed tapestry and repair them. The pieces are the Torn and Ripped Tapestry, which you find off of Sarnak Hatchlings as rare drops in the Lake of Ill Omen. Tailor the two pieces together (the result is a mended tapestry, not a faded one, but it works) and hand them in along with your Apprentice Skullcap - 1st Rank for your Apprentice Skullcap - 2nd Rank.

Master Xydoz says 'I must have the mended tapestry and your first circle apprentice cap before I reward you.'

Master Xydoz says 'A job well done, apprentice ____. Your fine service shall earn you the second circle apprentice skullcap. I would advise you to forget this tapestry - it is nothing more than an ancient rug of no importance.'
Your faction standing with Brood of Kotiz has been adjusted by 10.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 2.
    You gain experience!!
You receive 10 copper from Master Xydoz.
You receive 1 gold from Master Xydoz.

My rogue cons amiable and was able to do this quest.

    +10 to Brood of Kotiz

Not sure of Legion of Cabilis + hit as I am maxed already.

Failing the combine returned the torn tapestry.

At one point I had 6 of the torn in my advloot window, trying to get a ripped to drop. Ripped is consumed by a failed combine. Mass killing at the newbie area seems like the best place to do this. Remember to kill the goblins as they often kill the sarnaks you want otherwise. Killing skeletons and kittens and such may not help, but it feels like it does (especially if doing this with a higher level character).

Just to clarify, for those that do not know, you can fail on a trivial item. In fact, with lower level combines, you'll fail fairly often, even if you're at the trivial level (1/3rd of the time in this case). Only at skill levels 200+ or so does trivial mean "you'll succeed 95% of the time." Otherwise, you have to get your skill considerably above the trivial level in order to get a 95% success rate.

In this case, a skill of 52 (50 with geerlok) is required to get that 95% success rate.

As for me, I managed to succeed with the first combine at skill 21 (64% success rate).

All these calculations are from the EQTraders website.

Killing Sarnak hatchlings both the Torn & Ripped dropped on the southside of the Newbie area in Loio when zoning out from Cabilis.

And the Brains dropped on the West side of the Newbie area. When I started there were no Sarnak hatchlings up ... so I got a few friend and we killed everything in sight. When next spawn cycle started they were everywhere.

    (8)Brains = 57 kills
    (Torn & Ripped Tapestry x2 = 9 kills

Anyone know what, if any, faction is needed for this quest. I know KoS isn't an option. Or does one need amiable or allies?
    Tapestry Peices
    # Aug 12 2004 at 6:33 PM Rating: Decent
I've found that the tapestry peices only drop on the left side as you are leaving the zone... the hatchlings here also drop brains so i'd say this is the place to hunt for quest parts :D

After about 50 kills on the right side i moved to the left and had both tapestry parts in duplicate in about 10 kills

Was fighting out there for three days on the west side. Nothing. Was going crazy had made it to level eight. Read these posts. Moved to the east side that everyone was talking about. Starting killing everything. Sarnak popped. Dropped Torn Tapestry. Another popped. Dropped Ripped. Saw a third pop and killed him outta curiousty. Torn dropped. I think that the only sarnaks that drop these two items ONLY spawn on the east side of newbie area.

    # Aug 18 2004 at 7:11 PM Rating: Decent
I found the right side dropped the brains more often ... left side (as stated above) got the tapestry pieces. I just ran around killing everything that moved (F8 to target) and kept an eye out for the hatchlings.

Now to get tailoring up. :)

    Tapestry Parts
    # Jan 20 2003 at 12:32 PM Rating: Decent
I spent the better part of 2 days killing everything that moved, including 50ish sarnak hatchlings, and had not seen one tapestry part drop. In fact I had even sent in a /bug report about this. Right as I was going to give up, and go do something else, I said what the heck lemme go see that newbie area off to the side. See, I had been killing straight out from the ruins, where all the goblin watchers, scouts, and skeletons roam. In this area I was killing blue stuff, awaiting the sarnak pops. Plenty of brains, no tapestry.

If you take an immediate left after coming into the zone at the guards, there is an area on the side with newbie stuff only in it, decaying skellies, gob whelps, and a few scouts, only cat kitties. As I started to clear this area, and lemme tell you a lvl 8 pet can really make this place look like a charnel house, I started to find the tapestry parts. I failed on my first combine at 10 training points. I then went and raised it to 23. I came back with a sewing kit, and killed killed killed everything that moved. I must have failed 4 more combines before one finally worked, and of course kindly mentioned that at 23, it was trivial.

Skullcap 2 is mine, and I have the embalming fluid made, only need the brain for the third one, then I need to level a good bit before I can start on the fourth.

    # Nov 29 2002 at 7:43 PM Rating: Good
Dropped 10 skill points into Tailoring - made the attempt, succeeded AND got a skill up (11).

The contents of the mended tapestry? All it says is:

    "The Great Library of Kor-Sha"

Now went back to Master Xydoz and say "what is the second rank skullcap?". Put the "Mended Tapestry" and your "Apprentice Skullcap - 1st Rank" in the trade window and get back the 2nd cap.

Master Xydoz says 'I must have the mended tapestry and your first circle apprentice cap before I reward you.'
Master Xydoz says 'A job well done, apprentice Xurish. Your fine service shall earn you the second circle apprentice skullcap. I would advise you to forget this tapestry - it is nothing more than an ancient rug of no importance.'

From time to time you might want to visit the vendors in LoIO...Sometimes when the sarnak is killed it will drop either of these and the PC doesnt have any use of the item...since it isn't a no-drop item, the vendors will buy.
This is how I ended up getting them..

Grrr...I had to kill at least 50 hatchlings to get the ripped tapestry. I then went and worked my tailoring up to 28. Then I failed on the combine. I got the torn tapestry back, but I lost the danged ripped one.

I went back to LIO (everything around the hatchlings is green to me now) and killed about 20 more before I got the ripped tapestry. This time I succeeded. I guess I should consider myself lucky. I got the trivial message on the combine.

I have tailoring up to 8 and I have failed to tailor the two pieces after 6 tries. Is there a third item that needs to be combined with the ripped and torn pieces (such as silk thread or silk cord)?

no other item needed (and if you put the wrong items in, you would get a does not combine message).

Tailoring is to low to give you a decent chance of success, try working it up to 25 or so.

    Tried to do this quest-
    found 2 pieces
    put 5 skill into tailoring
-did it right the first time
-gave the guy my mended tapestry, and my first apprentice skullcap and poof, he wants more!?
THEN, my friend sk (so he couldnt use em anyway) turned in 4 brains just to see, and got both the apprentice AND the 2d rank scullcaps....
    Tic-Toc-Tic-Toc-Tic-Toc-Tic-Toc
I'm getting really ticked off.... WHY did this dude do that? I turned in the right stuff!
It's NOT all that easy to tailor these...
    # Oct 14 2001 at 1:25 AM Rating: Default
Feh! Tried twice now, once at 16, once at 21. No luck either time! But faction is good from turning in so very many brains, I suppose...

    # Aug 20 2001 at 11:28 AM Rating: Decent
I have seen ripped and torn tapestries not only off of sarnack hatchlings but also being sold of merchants in LOIO, if your getting tired of hunting hatchlings try the merchants maybe you could get lucky, I completed this quest without having to kill a hatchling.

Just as a "heads up", if you fail when combining the torn and ripped tapestry pieces, you only lose the ripped piece. The torn tapestry will survive every failed attempt. Of course Murphy's Law states that every sarnak hatchling you kill following the failed attempt will give you the torn one again.

HeHe it also says that after you get one of the two parts you will find that part every kill for the next like 10 drops of the tapestry
Need to Hand in TWO Things!
    # Dec 26 2000 at 3:57 AM Rating: Default
Just so you know, you need to hand in BOTH the tapestry and your 1st rank skullcap in order to get your 2nd rank skullcap. Other than that, you can probably fullfill both the 1st and 2nd rank quests at the same time since they drop off of the same creature.

Just wondering what this has to do with the quest. The reward you get when finished the quest is a second rank skullcap with no modifiers othen than AC.
