Stones and the cloak

I found stones in Eastern Wastes, I picked up 2 over a period of waiting at a /loc I got from here, neg 6911 by pos 1814, then I found one while lost in the snow at a different loc neg 6986 by pos 2572 and finally I found a place where 3 stones were on the ground around loc neg 6314 by pos 867. Now I just need to find a MQ dire wolf fur. BTW as stated below make sure you get the right guy, Ergrez Shortpaw, the guy with the last name and not the other one named just plain Ergriz (sp?)

-Update: I shoulda checked, bards can't use this thing, but at least rogues can. The Medium Quality Dire Wolf Fur is MAGIC but not LORE or NODROP so it can be traded, I got them as a semi-rare drop off dire wolves in Iceclad over by the wizard/druid portal but I imagine any plain old dire wolf anywhere in Velious could drop one. I also never seem to find these on the vendors in Thurgadin or Iceclad, it may just be my luck though.

Ergres Shortpaw

On a number of sites there has been conflicting info on whether it was Ergriz (no surname, the one who responds to hails) or Ergrez (with Shortpaw surname and does not respond to hails) that receives the items.

It is the latter: Ergrez Shortpaw gets the items.
Quest works as of 3/23/01

A couple of posters have stated that this quest was nerfed, but I have just completed it and recieved the Direwolf Fur Cloak, 7 ac +5 str. Gave the pelt and skinning rocks to Ergrez Shortpaw as indicated in the quest spoiler above. There is no xp reward or faction changes associated with completing this quest.

please excuse me for sounding ignorant, but could someone explain how to do multiquesting and should it work on this?

I turned in the skinning stones and my friend immediately turned in the skin. It works here
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 21 2001 at 6:28 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Well it looks as if they have finally nerfed this quest. I have been working on it for the past two weeks (only as a side activity) and last night (3/20/01) I headed to IC from the Oasis to finish the quest. When I hail Ergrez he spoke to me but said something about waiting for the master and that he could only clean furs and pelts. After having read that you could get the cloak without even talking to him, I gave him my 2 skinning stones and med quality dire wolf fur and then....

You gave the stuff to the wrong guy - I did that the first time trying for my cougarskin mask. You have to give the items to the "master", the one with the surname. The pupil will answer hails but is not the one to give the quest items to.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 21 2001 at 7:21 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I turned the medium qty dire wolf fur and 2 skinning stones as well and got nothing.

wolf fur and skinning stone

you need medium quality dire wolf skin, which can be either found on dire wolfs or simply by doing an auction and buying it off others to save yourselves a LOT of time. I don't think med quality skins are rare, since I got a few myself from killing random greens that agroed on to me. Skinning stones are the ones that are a pain in the **** to get. I found them by running thru the entire GD zone. I don't think they have a specific /location for their spawn points so it's all random. I did check some coordinates that people gave me, stones were never there. I suggest whoever finds them, pick them up and save them since they are needed to do some other quests. if u know anyone that has 2 of them, just have them turn in the stones to the gnoll first and turn in the skin last to get the cloak.

they are all over the place in EW and very easy to get. No real wandering monsters in the area where these are spawning...

I ran around the zone for well over an hour last night and not a single skinning stone. I believe what you post was your experience but definitely not the norm. For me at least getting the stones is indeed becomming a huge pain in the *****

Ok i dont know how much of this info was given below but i completed the quest yesterday and want to help you all out a little. Ok the dire wolf fur you can find off any dire wolf which are found in for sure Iceland Ocean (island with tower of Frozen Shadows), Eastern Waste (everywhere) and great Divide also. The pelts are just like any other a comon drop. Some are magic and no drop though. You need ONE medium quality pelt. After that you need to get the stones which can be found in Eastern Waste. this is harder than gettin the pelt because they spawn on the ground usually in highly mob populated areas. I being a rogue first got a camo so i could be invis and move fast but camo is unreliable and u have to go far in EW. Once it breakes mobs are everywhere so your chances of aggroing a Rhino, Snow Derv, Dire Wolf, snow Cougar, Frost Giant, Snow Griffon, or Kodiak (alot different and meaner)are very high they all roam these lands are very dangerous. I've been told these stones spawn in various areas. Some that I know of are (-5342,-1504),(-6459,1081),(-7254,1830). I've confirmed these two (-7413,1709), (-6911,1814), these are roughly where I got mine. I say roughly because I've found that these loc's are not consistent. They seem to appear in this general area. These were the loc's I was told but when I got to the exact location nothing, so being the military genius I am i started a circluar sweep from this point and on my two confirmed I found the red colored stone on the group close to the given loc's. Also one was real close to the loc I was given but I did not see it the first time. I think is a triggered spawn when u get near it or maybe I just had good timing. But the second time I went to the loc and stood there for 5 to 10 min and the mob traffic got real heavy..(thank god for Rogue Hide and Sneak). Then I saw a stone appear about 20 feet away. As a rogue i just gave up on the camo and used hide sneak. It took longer but i didnt get attacked once. I just waited til the mob traffic calmed down then i looted which broke my hide and then I hide again. these are No Drop so becareful if in a group cause so is the Cloak. Ok i took these to the shaman in the hut by the Tower of Frozen Shadows in Iceclad Ocean. Becareful I got attacked by a dire wolf once over there by huts and anyone who has been to Iceland nows. Not one NPC will help u...lol and the one zone has to giants guarding it..lol. Ok anyway...he did not talk to me at all...goes now if he even speaks or if someone else tells you want to give him but i took a chance and gave him 2 stones and 1 pelt. It said something like Ergrez took the item and sewed together clothing something like that. Thats it and I thought I was robbed cause there wasno xp, faction or item on my cursor but when i looked in my inventory there it was. So make sure u have a free slot. and Wa La thats it. Hoped I helped at least one person thanks.

Good for clerics? I think not..
# Jan 23 2001 at 10:06 AM Rating: Default
Please remove Clerics from the list of classes that are best suited for this quest. I just completed the quest and found that the resulting nodrop cloak can't even be used by Clerics. *sigh*

Can a dwarf wear this? i know it doesn't say they can here, but thinking that it would be similar to the cougarskin mask, seeing how it is made by the same person. Does anyone know?
Too easy
# Jan 10 2001 at 12:11 AM Rating: Default
I did this quest last night and it took about 3 hours total. I started in Iceclad but could not get Ergrez to talk to me so I went on. I finally got a MQ DW skin after 2 hours of soloing DW (I am a 41 Ranger) and went to EW to the dead Dragon and went looking. The stones are BRIGHT red and you cant miss them in the snow. After i camoed and ran around a bit I found 2 but during that i killed more DW and got 2 MORE SKINS there. As I was leaving I found another stone running to the bridge. Turn them all in to Ergrez and you get the cloak. Start in EW and kill DW there it seemed easier to get the MQ skins.
It will be nerfed soon it is too easy, do it now.

No it will not be nerfed. I don't work for Verant, but this quest is one of the benefits to having the expansion. It's also an appropriate reward for hunting the area.

The wolves are Level 30+ so it's not a cakewalk people. The skinning stones are in a bad spot. We Rangers can run around in Camo and with SOW. Try doing the same search in the EW with a 20th level warrior or a 12th level SK. You'd get pounded. See why it's got a good reward?

The Cougar Skin Mask has another great reward. Kitties are Lv 28-30 and group aggro. This filters out the newbies. The Tundra Mammoths are no joke, and it's a hell of a long run over to Permafrost for the Lesser Wooly Mammoths.

Just smile and be grateful.

RE: Too easy- all good points, but let me add...
# Apr 04 2001 at 5:04 PM Rating: Default
All the points you made were good ones and I would add something further -

People are so used to Verant's typical "by the time you can do it, it's no longer any use to you" style of creating quests, that when they finally (rarely) do make an appropiate one it's percieved as being too easy. It's not, this one of those rare lvl/risk/reward balanced ones that actually have a worthwhile payoff. The Couger Skin Mask quest being another of those rare ones. Just too bad you have to plunk down another $20 for the expansion to enjoy a balanced quest.
Med Quality Fur?
# Jan 07 2001 at 8:36 PM Rating: Default
Where do you get this? All I have gotten off the Dire Wolves are High and Low quality. I hear Med quality is foraged in Kael.. any truth to this?

How many wolves do you need to kill to get one? I have killed over 50, getting tired.

Thanks.

you get the medium quality fur from the wolves in the Great Divide. I have found it several times.
Skinning Stone
# Jan 06 2001 at 10:12 AM Rating: Good
You can find a Skinning Stone in Eastern Wastes at -5342, -1504 on the ground.
No idea about the the spawn time or anything else. The stone is NOdrop of course
Anyone know where i can find Ergrez

Simple... in the middle of the gnoll camp in Iceclad. Just SouthWest of the Tower of Frozen Shadow. About 1000, 2100.
