Just did this one last night. I had soloed dire wolves off and on and never gotten an MQ pelt. Group with some guildies last night and got 3 MQ out of like 10 wolf kills. Just luck it's random. Aquired skinning stones on a couple of different trips through Wastes. They are also random. As long as you haven't been killing the gnolls you should be indifferent. Walked right up with no camo. Tried a hail just to see if he would respond. Nope. Handed over 2 that's two skinning stones and 1 MQ Dire Wolf Pelt and brief message about Ergrez working on tailoring with pelts and such you find the cloak in your inventory. Very easy quest if you aren't going out of your way to do it and just happen upon the stones and pelt.

Just did this quest this morning in under 30 mins. Got the furs off a dead wolf in GD, that someone was hunting and not looting. Got the stones at locs previously posted by others. When I went to give the items in, noticed that Shortpaw was agro to me. I am Ranger....so Camo'ed and did Sneak to approach. I DID NOT Hail him....just gave him ONE Dire Wolf Fur (MAGIC) and TWO Skinning Stones. I got the tell-tale ding and the item and got my **** outta there. Note: One fur and Two stones. He is located in the Hut on center isle, on hill above the Icehunters on iceflow. Good luck all....easy quest and good item considering the time put in.

I'm a ranger too and I can confirm he's always been indifferent. Still was last night when I did this quest after realising I still had a leather cloak on from about 35 levels ago.

Have you two been killing peaceful gnolls in Velious by any chance?

First of all you don't need Med-Quality pelt.

You can collect the High-Quality pelts or the Med-Quality pelts.

To make the High-Quality pelts into Med-Quality pelts you will need a Skinning Knife (this is a Blacksmithed item), Combine 1 High Quality pelt and a Skinning Knife in a Sewing kit and if succesful you get a Med-Quality pelt you can use for the quest. The trivial tailoring skill to do this a skill level of 15.

As for the Skinning Stones, I noticed from the earlier posted messages that most of the locations were in the ? x 1800 locations. Therefore I concentrated my search to a path spanning between -5000 and -8000 x 1800. I found two stones within a few minutes.

I think that this quest might be down right now. I completed the Cougar skin mask quest with this guy then, then I turned in everything for the dire wolf cloak and ..... nadda. I got nothing for the items. Maybe I did something wrong but; I turned in 2 skinning rocks and 1 med quality dire wolf fur and got nothing. If these are the the wrong amount of items to hand in will someone let me know.

I found Calic's loc's to be quite good. Found my two within those locations. Took about 30 mins of running around and lucky I had my druid friend to keep me invisible.

Those Loc's would be within a vicinity of
neg 7500 to neg 5000 by pos 1000 to pos 2000

Hope that's clear. =)

Also, the MQ dire wolf fur I bought in thurg. Pretty nice cloak considering it costed me some pocket change and I didn't have to fight anything.

I rated this as Excellent, simply because you can do this quest without actually fighting anything (auction for the fur) and it takes less than an hour if you get lucky finding the stones.

I did this for my L10 BRD and it Rocks! The only risk factor is running into wandering mobs. Everything in these zone will kill a low level quicker than you can blink.

You don't rate a quest because the quest sucks. You rate the way the person explained the quest.

If they say, "there is this guy, I forgot his name. Give him what he asks for and you get the COOL SWORD. Easy to do." Give them awful.

If they gave all the information then they get decent or better.

If they give all the information and it is writen in a good, easy to understand way, then give them good or excellent.

The person who posted the quest has no control over what the quest will do.

you sell the MQ( multi quest)unless all parts r nodrop

to MQ you auc the items a MQ and unless all parts r no drop you turn in the no drop parts 1st and as soon as that is done...they turn in the the rest or other part(s) and they get the item

best done in group so you will see any messages given so they know u already turned in your part

if all parts are no drop the person you sell the MQ to will need the part(s)that you dont have or the 1s you just dont need to turn in 8)

This may be old news, but I found the rocks at the following locations:

[Fri Jul 20 07:19:40 2001] skinning rock neg 4964 neg 1986 eastern wastes
[Fri Jul 20 07:35:09 2001] skinning rock neg 5404 neg 1621 eastern wastes

Those are entries in my notes.txt file. Anyhow, it's in Eastern Wastes, just as you come off the dragon bridge head straight out like going to the Ry'Gorr fort. There's a small valley-like area just before you get to the fort. Both stones were found there.

Hope this helps someone else.

Take care,

PS: I know they are random spawns... someone eluded to the fact that they commonly found them "in a valley near the fort, but didn't know the location". My point is, both of these were found there. It may be more common to find them there. Just a hypothesis since two or more people seem to be finding them in the same relative area.

I was a lvl 11 rogue when i went to velious to see what I had just bought with my expansion, i used sneak and hide all over the place, nothing sees you out in EW or out in IC, so you just get a tp to IC, then use sneak hide / sow and go to EW, there is an area with a frozen dragon on the more southern side called the sleepers tomb or something, just walk around near that and look for little rocks ont he gorund real easy to spot if you as me, in less than 10 minutes I got 2 and then I just used OOC chat and asked if anyone had an mq dire wolf fur that I could have, they were nice and I got one right off, thanked the guy and went to turn int he quest items I was only lvl 11 and yes there is no exp or faction, but all ya do is go back to engrez southpaw or whatever, the one with the last name and turn in all the 3 items same time you get a nice 7ac 5str cloak for only a few minutes time the real pain in the *** was getting a tp outta velious ) So all you newbie rogues want some adventure do velious at lvl 11 or lower even, I was in CC when I was lvl 8 and a lvl 60 shammy was killing spiders down there for thier silks and he killed and let me loot a crystal grinder for free!! Thats a 9/27 2ac for free, and then I went to LGuk and got my mod for free, its no drop mask for rogue bard only and people just let it rot, some nice guys let me loot it... then I went to thurgadin in Velious, and looking in the all the shops, I found a small wisdom diety in the store for 2pp, some body sold it to the shop, so i grabbed it and solf it for 200 back in EC, so this is my new thing, hhe Before I go lvl im just gonna adventure into lots of places that have lore or no drop stuff and ask if people will be cool and let me loot, also check all the shop ) hehe Great way for a rogue to be sneaky and show off his treasure stealing skills ) So be sneaky and go on adventures )

A skinning knife - made by smiths, allows tailors to lower the quality of pelts/skins.
If you have HQ skins, you can transform them easily into MQ or LQ, without having to go and find that exact drop.
Of course, didnt try that - still a few levels to go.

I found stones in Eastern Wastes, I picked up 2 over a period of waiting at a /loc I got from here, neg 6911 by pos 1814, then I found one while lost in the snow at a different loc neg 6986 by pos 2572 and finally I found a place where 3 stones were on the ground around loc neg 6314 by pos 867. Now I just need to find a MQ dire wolf fur. BTW as stated below make sure you get the right guy, Ergrez Shortpaw, the guy with the last name and not the other one named just plain Ergriz (sp?)

-Update: I shoulda checked, bards can't use this thing, but at least rogues can. The Medium Quality Dire Wolf Fur is MAGIC but not LORE or NODROP so it can be traded, I got them as a semi-rare drop off dire wolves in Iceclad over by the wizard/druid portal but I imagine any plain old dire wolf anywhere in Velious could drop one. I also never seem to find these on the vendors in Thurgadin or Iceclad, it may just be my luck though.

On a number of sites there has been conflicting info on whether it was Ergriz (no surname, the one who responds to hails) or Ergrez (with Shortpaw surname and does not respond to hails) that receives the items.

It is the latter: Ergrez Shortpaw gets the items.

You gave the stuff to the wrong guy - I did that the first time trying for my cougarskin mask. You have to give the items to the "master", the one with the surname. The pupil will answer hails but is not the one to give the quest items to.

# Feb 01 2001 at 12:44 PM Rating: Default
you need medium quality dire wolf skin, which can be either found on dire wolfs or simply by doing an auction and buying it off others to save yourselves a LOT of time. I don't think med quality skins are rare, since I got a few myself from killing random greens that agroed on to me. Skinning stones are the ones that are a pain in the **** to get. I found them by running thru the entire GD zone. I don't think they have a specific /location for their spawn points so it's all random. I did check some coordinates that people gave me, stones were never there. I suggest whoever finds them, pick them up and save them since they are needed to do some other quests. if u know anyone that has 2 of them, just have them turn in the stones to the gnoll first and turn in the skin last to get the cloak.

Ok i dont know how much of this info was given below but i completed the quest yesterday and want to help you all out a little. Ok the dire wolf fur you can find off any dire wolf which are found in for sure Iceland Ocean (island with tower of Frozen Shadows), Eastern Waste (everywhere) and great Divide also. The pelts are just like any other a comon drop. Some are magic and no drop though. You need ONE medium quality pelt. After that you need to get the stones which can be found in Eastern Waste. this is harder than gettin the pelt because they spawn on the ground usually in highly mob populated areas. I being a rogue first got a camo so i could be invis and move fast but camo is unreliable and u have to go far in EW. Once it breakes mobs are everywhere so your chances of aggroing a Rhino, Snow Derv, Dire Wolf, snow Cougar, Frost Giant, Snow Griffon, or Kodiak (alot different and meaner)are very high they all roam these lands are very dangerous. I've been told these stones spawn in various areas. Some that I know of are (-5342,-1504),(-6459,1081),(-7254,1830). I've confirmed these two (-7413,1709), (-6911,1814), these are roughly where I got mine. I say roughly because I've found that these loc's are not consistent. They seem to appear in this general area. These were the loc's I was told but when I got to the exact location nothing, so being the military genius I am i started a circluar sweep from this point and on my two confirmed I found the red colored stone on the group close to the given loc's. Also one was real close to the loc I was given but I did not see it the first time. I think is a triggered spawn when u get near it or maybe I just had good timing. But the second time I went to the loc and stood there for 5 to 10 min and the mob traffic got real heavy..(thank god for Rogue Hide and Sneak). Then I saw a stone appear about 20 feet away. As a rogue i just gave up on the camo and used hide sneak. It took longer but i didnt get attacked once. I just waited til the mob traffic calmed down then i looted which broke my hide and then I hide again. these are No Drop so becareful if in a group cause so is the Cloak. Ok i took these to the shaman in the hut by the Tower of Frozen Shadows in Iceclad Ocean. Becareful I got attacked by a dire wolf once over there by huts and anyone who has been to Iceland nows. Not one NPC will help u...lol and the one zone has to giants guarding it..lol. Ok anyway...he did not talk to me at all...goes now if he even speaks or if someone else tells you want to give him but i took a chance and gave him 2 stones and 1 pelt. It said something like Ergrez took the item and sewed together clothing something like that. Thats it and I thought I was robbed cause there wasno xp, faction or item on my cursor but when i looked in my inventory there it was. So make sure u have a free slot. and Wa La thats it. Hoped I helped at least one person thanks.

# Jan 10 2001 at 12:11 AM Rating: Default
I did this quest last night and it took about 3 hours total. I started in Iceclad but could not get Ergrez to talk to me so I went on. I finally got a MQ DW skin after 2 hours of soloing DW (I am a 41 Ranger) and went to EW to the dead Dragon and went looking. The stones are BRIGHT red and you cant miss them in the snow. After i camoed and ran around a bit I found 2 but during that i killed more DW and got 2 MORE SKINS there. As I was leaving I found another stone running to the bridge. Turn them all in to Ergrez and you get the cloak. Start in EW and kill DW there it seemed easier to get the MQ skins.
It will be nerfed soon it is too easy, do it now.

RE: Too easy
# Jan 11 2001 at 3:09 PM Rating: Default
No it will not be nerfed. I don't work for Verant, but this quest is one of the benefits to having the expansion. It's also an appropriate reward for hunting the area.

The wolves are Level 30+ so it's not a cakewalk people. The skinning stones are in a bad spot. We Rangers can run around in Camo and with SOW. Try doing the same search in the EW with a 20th level warrior or a 12th level SK. You'd get pounded. See why it's got a good reward?

The Cougar Skin Mask has another great reward. Kitties are Lv 28-30 and group aggro. This filters out the newbies. The Tundra Mammoths are no joke, and it's a **** of a long run over to Permafrost for the Lesser Wooly Mammoths.

Just smile and be grateful.

RE: Too easy- all good points, but let me add...
# Apr 04 2001 at 5:04 PM Rating: Default
All the points you made were good ones and I would add something further -

People are so used to Verant's typical "by the time you can do it, it's no longer any use to you" style of creating quests, that when they finally (rarely) do make an appropiate one it's percieved as being too easy. It's not, this one of those rare lvl/risk/reward balanced ones that actually have a worthwhile payoff. The Couger Skin Mask quest being another of those rare ones. Just too bad you have to plunk down another $20 for the expansion to enjoy a balanced quest.
