    This quest begins with Master Xydoz in West Cabilis (findable with CTRL+F).

    You say, 'Hail, Master Xydoz'

    Master Xydoz says 'What is it you seek within the tower? Could it be that you are a new apprentice? If so, you are required to don the [apprentice skullcap].'

    You say, 'What apprentice skullcap?'

    Master Xydoz says 'All new members of the Brood of Kotiz are required to don the [apprentice skullcap]. To earn one, a new apprentice is required to fetch four brains for further experiments. Not just any four brain, mind you, but the brains of [sarnak] hatchlings.'

    You say, 'What are sarnak?'

    Master Xydoz says 'Sarnak?!! Do not speak loudly, that name. If you seek information on the sarnak, read the tome of this tower. The tower librarian should be found within.'

    Collect 4x "Sarnak Hatchling Brain" from sarnak hatchlings in the Lake of Ill Omen. These spawn in the area just south of the Cabilis entrance.

    Note that the Sarnaks and Goblins are KOS to each other, so you'll have some competition on your hands.

    Upon handing in the four brains:

    Master Xydoz says 'Good work, my young apprentice. Wear it as a sign of our circle. Do not lose it. Someday you shall wear a necromancer skullcap, but next shall come the [second rank skullcap].'

    Tried getting these quests on a rogue with sneak, they don't give necro skullcap dialogue at indifferent, so the minimum is probably amiable faction. Same responses for all the skullcap dialogues on the whole quest chain. (quests : necromancer 1st rank --> 7th rank is what I checked)

    [Mon Aug 08 12:55:27 2022] Master Xydoz regards you indifferently -- looks like he would wipe the floor with you! (Lvl: 70)
    [Mon Aug 08 12:55:28 2022] You say, 'Hail, Master Xydoz'
    [Mon Aug 08 12:55:28 2022] Master Xydoz says, 'When you have shown more devotion to the Brood of Kotiz, we can discuss such things.'
    [Mon Aug 08 12:55:32 2022] You stop sneaking.

    [Mon Aug 08 12:55:32 2022] You say, 'Hail, Master Xydoz'
    [Mon Aug 08 12:55:33 2022] Master Xydoz says, 'You are a true simpleton to think you can speak to me. You are no ally to the Brood of Kotiz. Begone, before I make your blood boil!'

    Is this the faction hit you got when handing in the 4 brains?

    I have never found this Librarian or the tome, but I don't think it matters with this quest.
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    I always found this quest irritating, but my sister gave me some advice.
    1. The goblins in the area will always attack the sarnak. So try to kill the goblins when you see them.
    2. Try to stick to the right hand mountain when you enter the Lake of Ill Omen. They can spawn there, and it is a bit easier to control mobs etc.
    3. Sometimes the sarnak will drop their "illusion" and turn into these wird insect .. thingies. Don't worry, they can still drop sarnak brains.
    And when you hand in the four sarnak brains:
    Master Xydoz says 'Good work, my young apprentice. Wear it as a sign of our circle. Do not lose it. Someday you shall wear a necromancer skullcap, but next shall come the [second rank skullcap].'
    This will lead you into the next set of quests.
    I zoned into Lake of Ill Omen and cast levant (necro succor). This put me in the middle of the newbie area the older post suggest killing in. I proceeded to kill everything, the Sarnak Hatchlings popped often. Occasionally the goblins would kill one before I got there.
    Xydoz won't take the brains from you unless you /con amiable. He is in the necro guild hall (my map was old and showed different locations than many of the npc in West Cab are).
    Stand here
    OK here's a couple tips, don't do this till your pet can slaughter these things real good, or you can do it all you want as a lobie.
    But stand at about +5391, -5839.
    Kill EVERYTHING that moves and isn't gonna kick your dumb butt to hell.
    OK heres what i can share with you...
    First, location... north side of the hill running SW from ECab zone line, within sight of the pavement (south side prolly works too).
    Second, spawns... seems to be a random 1 in 10 spawn (approximately) so you gotta kill 10 mobs to get one Sarnak Hatchling to spawn... (i killed mostly gobbies to try and keep the KoS situation for the sarnaks as low as possible so they werent dead before i got there)
    Third (to answer a previous question)... the reward for the quest is NO DROP and can only be worn by necro, so YES, this is a NECROMANCER ONLY quest...
    Fourthly, and lastly, the drop ratio i got... I only killed enough to loot my 8 brains, but heres what i came up with:
    Out of 13 Sarnak Hatchlings:
    12 Heads
    8 Brains
    3 Blood Vials
    2 Gems (A Cats Eye Agate and a Lapis Lazuli)
    Seems to be small coin on 95% of everything, but nothing noticed more than 1.5sp...
    Hope this helps
    Quest = Necro only?
    Guide
    # Feb 17 2005 at 10:07 PM Rating: Decent
    OK, im going to try to post basic guides for each of the skullcaps, no, not the stuff like test, but where to find spawns, and what to do to get them to spawn, etc. I completed this quest as a wood elf bard with an illusion mask and a bit of factioning(was kindly at the time).
    SKULLCAP 1
    Go to Lake of Ill Omen via West Cabilis. Exiting the town, turn left and travel into the grass, here you will need to find 4 "a sarnak hatchlings". Goblins will attempt to kill them, so make sure to deal with those if they are fighting. If no hatchlings are up, simply slaughter the other stuff in the area, and you'll have hatchlings up soon enough. Collect 4 brains and you have enough for your skullcap 1.
    *note: The hatchlings also drop "a torn tapestry", and "a ripped tapestry", save these for the second skullcap... might be smart to stay untill you can loot both sides as well.
    curious about faction
    # Nov 04 2004 at 5:35 AM Rating: Decent
    Anyone know what the minimun faction required to start the 1st skullcap quest is? I'm a DE necro an im apprehensive to Brood of Kotiz atm. I can ask about the apprentice skullcap an he tells me i need 4 sarnak hatchling brains, but when i turn them in he says he has no use for this item an gives them back. Any info is appreciated meanwhile back to killing outcast iksars. 8)
    I can guarantee - amiable is minimum. I tried at indifferent and he will not respond to hails positively, nor will he take the four hatchling brains. Also, you only need four.
    I have done this recently. First, there is a hill in the middle of the front area. I stood here for a while and observed the hatchlings. Be careful, hard npcs frequent this hill. The hatchlings pop near the middle of the area and go either left or right towards the walls. You must be quick on the pull and kill because the goblins will attack and kill them quickly. The heads can be turned in 4 at a time to the warlord in the zone for good exp too, so don't let them rot. Also I have never seen the pop at night yet.
    The instructions are misleading. In preparation for the quest I gathered 8 brains by killing Sarnak Hatchlings. Mater Xydoz only wants 4. He doesn't ask for 'an additional four.' However I WAS 5th Level when I completed the quest. I was into the Second Rank. He may be able to read that,..he may ask characters under 4th level for 8. I don't know. I would suggest being 4th level anyway, before you search for these hatchlings. They're found right outside Cabilis entrance in the Lake Of Ill Omen. Note: They seem more common on the middle to left side of the grassy area. I rarely saw one to the right side (as you look out into Lake Of Ill Omen, facing away from the Cabilis entrance).
    if you really feel the need to do this quest tho, and you worship cazic-thule, you can get in using your skeletal form.. of course by that level you almost have to have better equip
    #Anonymous, Posted: May 04 2001 at 3:26 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) sorry, its an Iksar only, and by the time you could get to Cabalis anyhow, you would have better equiptment more likely than not, not to mention that you would have to have faction with the iksar and that would take some doing, otherwise you would be KOS there
    I found out because I help a lv 3 necro out geting his 1st and 2nd rank skullcap, by helping him kill any high lv creatures that would kill him at his lv. and i got one of the brains and tryed to give it to him but it said no rent,drop, or sold.
    RE: yup they are no rent.
    # Jan 31 2003 at 11:45 AM Rating: Decent
    No-rent items can still be traded, as long as they are not No-Drop. If you try to hand something to someone and it says "That item can not be dropped, traded, or sold" that means it's No-Drop, and has nothing to do with whether it's No-Rent or not.
    Not sure if the brains are no-rent or not.
    No-Rent hatchling brains
    I'm pretty sure the Sarnak hatchling brains are no-rent. I had one disappear on me after I logged off.
    I logged on tonight and both of my sarnak brains were still in my inventory. Never saw a no-rent flag on one. Maybe some are different?
