This quest begins at Chief Kalan in Cobalt Scar (location -330, -1218 on the beach just north by northwest of the druid portal).

It is available at apprehensive faction.

You say, 'Hail, Chief Kalan'

Chief Kalan nods respectfully and says 'Welcome to Siren Bay, strange one. These beaches belong to my people, the Othmir. You are welcome in our villages as long as you do not cause trouble and are willing to either assist the shellfish collectors provide nourishment or aid the warriors defending the beaches.'

You say, 'I will aid the warriors'

Chief Kalan says 'There are many creatures that would prey on my people if it were not for the dedication of our warriors. The Bulthar and Ulthork often invade our territory and prey on our shellfish collectors. They are wasteful creatures and take more than they could possibly eat from the sacred seas.'

You say, 'What ulthork?'

Chief Kalan says 'The Ulthork are walrus people. They are just as territorial and brutish as the Bulthar but are slightly more intelligent. They seem to be jealous of my peoples prosperity and occasionally lead raiding parties onto our beaches. Our craftsman use the tusks of the slain Ulthork to carve ivory totems of praise to the ocean lord. I will gladly barter for no less than four Ulthork tusks.'

Upon handing in the tusks:

Chief Kalan says 'I will barter for no less than four pairs of Ulthork tusks.'
Chief Kalan says 'I will barter for no less than four pairs of Ulthork tusks.'
Chief Kalan says 'I will barter for no less than four pairs of Ulthork tusks.'
Chief Kalan says 'Many thanks to you strange one. Our craftsman will be pleased, they have been in need of a new bundle of ivory.'

Your faction standing with Othmir got better.
Your faction standing with Ulthork got worse.
You gain experience!!

For your efforts, you'll receive a random gem or trinket.

There do not appear to be any additional rewards other than what is already posted, I’ve done this quest several times recently.

Took me forever to collect 4 tusks. Well, I thought, for a jewel it is just barely worth my time to travel to CS and do the turn in. And what do I get for all my effort? A crystallized sulphur. Way to go SoE, you guys sure know how to take the quest out of Everquest.

It depends on your rate of kill, ect. For quad kiting wizards or Druids working the north shore of the Easter Wastes, you kill a lot of Ulthork's and you get great exp. While quadding with my wizzy, I would get 8 tusks or so a night of heavy quading. When I would get about 24 I would head to CS and turn them in. For porters, this can be pretty quick (bind, port to CS, levitate, run to beach, turn in, gate). I would almost always get 1 blue diamond, 3 or 4 gems/crowns/rings that sold to the vendors for over 100pp, and, yes, a crystalized sulfur or peridot that sells for much less.

BTW, sell to the otter vendors north on the beach north of the chief. Chances are, your faction will be very good.

I am looking at the paragraphs above and he is asking for 4 pairs or tusks. does this mean he wants 8 tusks for mt to turn in to receive the rewards or can i turn in 1 tusk at a time and receive a reward.

You get your reward after turning in 4. Apparently the confusion comes because the thing you turn in is labeled "Ulthork Tusks", not "Ulthork Tusk", so each one represents a pair of tusks.

I'm sure its just a wording/grammar thing... as when you kill an Ulthork, you can possibly get two tusks from a corpse, each 'pair' of tusks lumped into a single item in the game, a single item with the black 'tusk' graphic represents the 'pair' of tusks that you would receive from a single corpse.

Put simply, 1 black 'tusk' graphic = 1 pair of tusks (so you only to turn in 4)

Hope this helps...

Turned in 7 sets of tusks today. Recieved 1 Blue Diamond, 3 Diamonds, 1 Ruby Crown, 1 Star Ruby Earring, and 1 Crystallized Sulfur. I am happy with the BD and Diamonds, but had hoped for a Jacinth or Black Sapphire as well.

To find the Chief, just walk forward till you get to the cliff leading down to the beach. Look down and a bit to the right, and you will see the Othmir seashell huts. The Chief is in one of them. I conned amiably after killing a few hundred ulthorks, and am still amiably after turning in my tusks.

I ve read all the hints on how to get the tusks
but suprised no one has mentioned how to get to cobalt scar. Is it possible to run there, it looks a bit risky to me, or does a ranger need to scrounge up a port if so I suppose it would have to be a pretty high lvl wiz

I con ally to them when I first got there. I turned in 4 sets and I got, Two blue diamonds, one diamond, and a ruby.
I sold one of the Blue diamonds in EC for 1500pp.
I sold the ruby for 100pp.
I still have the blue diamond and diamond.
These prices are on the Quellious server and might not reflect prices on other servers. But if you got to /auc your gems, you will get ALOT more for them rather than going to a merchant.

The guy who got 850pp for his gems got hosed...BIG TIME.

great quest
# Jun 15 2002 at 9:13 PM Rating: Default
If you are looking to make money fast, head out to East Wastes and kill those Ulthorks. I am a lvl 33 troll warrior and i started doing this with my friend when i was lvl 32. i can solo the ulthork hunters and the majority of my tusks have dropped off of them. You faction with the king doesnt really matter on what you get either. It is random. Your level doesn't matter either. You could do this quest at lvl 1 if u wanted, but you would have to have a high level with you. I plan on doing this quest many times over because the money is great and it lets you twink your other characters.

it says 50 most likely because south beach ulthorks (in EW) are hard up until then

yes you can turn in before 50

not many ulthork to raise faction.. i am at amiably on around 100 kills (very easy quads)

i've turned in 5 sets of 4 and got:
1 ruby (100pp)
2 fire emerald rings (120pp each)
1 ruby crown 173pp
1 diamond (200pp to a PC)

very nice quest

I saw some guys from a guild I want to join in CS when I went for some quadding on the wyverns. I have been careful not to wolf form out there and have to kill any othmirs. But...turns out the guys were killing Othmirs! Well I hedged my bets, but when the guild leader started to get low on health and a cleric was down while fighting the chief ..what could I do but heal him. The Chief went down, then so did several pups, etc... (The Guild is, in the end, more important to me than some silly otters.)

So now I am kos to my old otter friends - which means no more frost giant steaks and no chance at getting blue diamonds to help subsidize the costs for a grandmaster jewelcrafter. Really I just thought I would share this little story of my adventres ..but the real question is:

If I go to start killing Ulthorks, how fast does Othmir faction rise? If it's gonna take 100's and 100's of Ulthorks I would rather just live with the kos faction to Othmir and work on leveling or doing some other quests that would make the blue diamond cost irrelevant.

Anyone got any thoughts on the matter?
