At the end of the previous quest, Garadain mentioned plans.

You say, 'What plans?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'The bloody Ry'Gorr, friends of the frost giants, plan to raid our encampment. Their captain, Scarbrow Ga'hruk is leading the raid. I need someone to intercept his [orders] so we may prepare for the attack. Without them we could be in serious trouble.'

You say, 'What orders?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Find the Ry'Gorr messenger and cut him down. Bring the message he carries to my lookout. When the attack is thwarted, return to me with the head of Scarbrow and the platinum insignia ring.'

The Ry'Gorr Messenger generally makes a beeline from the north toward the Ry'Gorr fort. Kill him and loot Rygorr Invasion Plans. Give these to "a coldain lookout" near Garadain's hut.

a coldain lookout shouts ' Aahhh..You're too late! They're upon us! To arms men! Death to Scarbrow!'

Scarbrow and a band of orcs spawn about 100 feet away and proceed to attack Garadain's outpost. The attacking force consists of 2-3 of "a Ry`Gorr invader" (level 42-44) and 2-3 of "a Ry`Gorr oracle" (level 42-44). Without your assistance the orcs will probably wipe out the dwarves. However, this isn't good, because the dwarves can cause Scarbrow's corpse to disappear if one of them gets the killshot. The trick is to intercept Scarbrow while he is still some distance away from the huts and let the dwarves and the rest of the rygorr battle it out amongst themselves. You may also want to keep an eye on Garadain, as it can take a while (30 minutes or so) for him to respawn if he is killed.

Scarbrow drops his head and occasionally a Frozen Orb. Give the head and your Platinum Coldain Insignia Ring to Garadain.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Excuse me, ______, aren't you forgetting something?'
Garadain Glacierbane says 'Without your assistance, we would have lost our camp and our lives. Again, I thank you. Now that you have proven your loyalty to the throne I have a special [favor] to ask of you.'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.

FYI, the orcs spawn directly the opposite direction as the lookout is facing, which makes no sense at all. So do the turn in, and head in the opposite directoin from the way the lookout is facing.

Not sure if it's mentioned here cause I didn't read everything.
Changed?

For some reason, when I turned in the scrabrow head and the platinum ring-nothing happened and I lost both items.

Has this quest been changed? What else does he want? Do I have to start over? I sent a /bug and /petition. In 24 hours my petition was deleted, with no reply.

Email me at Saluraatermors@hotmail.com
Thanks

Check your faction. If your faction with him is sufficently low, he will eat items.
ranger solo
# Feb 07 2004 at 6:14 AM Rating: Good
To solo this as a ranger (I was 52) you're going to want to turn in, then sit far back and watch the orcs. just like it's already said, the named you need comes alone in a 'second wave'. when he's far enough off from the oracles that are waiting back (the third wave), pull him with a spell. it's important to get far away with him so you don't get aggro from the others. sometimes the dwarves will kill the rest of the orcs; sometimes the other way around. just take the named away, nice and far and root/ dot it to death. he doesn't have impressive HP, but he does hit kinda hard. C3 wouldn't hurt.

Aye, easy for the 52 Ranger. Just tried this method and had no problems pulling him away and then rooted and plunked arrows into him till he broke root around 45% health then beat him the rest of the way down. Wish Poxbreath was this easy! :(

Did this today solo

Orcs pop a few yards West from the camp (opposite side of where Lookout is)

they come in 3 waves: a few orcs, Scarbrow, the orcs remaining

Target Scarbrow (you have 1 or 2 minutes), let wave 1 go to coldain camp, when Scarbrow moves agro and kill him (snare/root/...), then go help dwarves: orcs can kill Garadain, and this means you'll have to wait for him to repop to do your turn in

I did this with a group of my guildies <Champions of Brell>. There were 7 of us lvls 45-54. Very easy. We had 2 Wizards, a ranger, a cleric, 2 paladins and Me, the Magician. We had the wizards and ranger kite the individuals and the rest of us went after named mob. We were kinda bummed he didn't drop the orb, but we are woring on doing this quite a few more times with the guild.

I really like this series of quests.

Myself (53 rogue, epic), my hydra druid (55, epic), and my RL friend (65 monk, epic, pop gear) did this real easy.

I used rogue to turn in plans, then hide cause I wasn't gonna use him this fight. Monk agros all of them and starts kiting. Druid snares 1 oracle, takes to dorfs and roots. it dies. repeat to all orcs 1 at a time, monk solod Scarebrow before last invader was killed by dorfs.

Grats me 5th ring.

Did this solo with a 51 Shadowknight yesterday - died twice figuring things out, first time with chanters, second time solo. I positioned myself S of huts and targetted Scarbrow, then waited - invaders storm camp, then a bit later Scarbrow rushes in - I feared him as he started moving and the fear path led SE from huts, more or less. Got one oracle as add, feared him immediately and luckily he ran in a different path - darknessed Scarbrow then, and just unloaded on him, keeping him feared before it wore off. He never touched me or my pet. Booyah!

I also solo'd it tonight. Messenger was hard to find but when i did, i turned plans in and the orcs popped. I tried to harmony of nature them which slowed them down a bit, but i basically let them slaughter the dwarves. I got Scarbrow to aggro me and i drug him away from the melee. I then dotted & nuked him to death.

Of course i'll have to wait for the dwarves to repop before i get my 5th ring, but im camping anyway. They will be there when i wake up.

Some people seem to be of the impression he doesn't drop the orb anymore. As of last week, he still drops the orb, but not everytime, probably pretty rarely, but it's still there.

When you give the lookout the plans the orcs spawn down the hill to the west by 2 trees. I single pulled scarbrow with my 56 shaman and he was toast. the other orcs attack the camp and kill the dwarves so you have to wait for them to respawn. BTW no orb dropped.

pulling scarbrow
# Jun 26 2002 at 12:44 AM Rating: Decent
Alright VERY easy way to do this. Get two or three people with harmony cast it a bunch on orcs single pull out scar and kill him let orcs take over huts and let them despawn and wait for dwarves to come back. Might want someone with a high amount of hp's to pull because he will harm touch puller usually. Did this last night for the frozen orb scar drops. The orcs will not kill the lookout so you can do this multiple times if you need orb. BTW best place to pull him is north then west so your away from the coldain huts so they wont aggro on scar and kill him.

You can also simply have a lvl 54+ pull Scarbrow right after he and the other orcs have spawned. We did this and only had to fight Scarbrow and an Oracle - the rest of the orcs charged the poor dwarves and killed them.

Another Bard (52) tactic:
I charmed an oracle and made it attack ScarBrow. I started chanting him, too. All other orc jumped the oracle - including Scarbrow getting of his harmtouch.
After a short time I outdamaged the oracle and Scarbrow came to me. I lead it away and kited him down.
(I takled the oracle first 'cause I didn't want someone buffing them, harmtouch me and I think those casters are the only danger 'cause of rooting you.)

I did this quest to help a friend. It only took 3 people to do it, I (lvl 52 sk at the time) kited the other orcs around while my friends (a lvl 57 monk and 57 shammy) killed scar brow.

Greetings all, just wanted to save you the aggravation that I endured by saying that the rygors spawn on the WEST side of the camp. Position your force on the west side and intercept Scarbrow before he reaches the coldain or he will be lost.

helped a friend do this last night...
was very easy... chanter mezzed everything while we fought scarbrow...
Scarbrow popped just down the hill a ways from where you trigger him from... none of them moved until we agroed them... had to run down to them...
fight lasted less then 3 minutes i'd say (chanter only had to mezz one mob 2 times, all others once). easy fight, group was 60 war 60 monk 60 druid 52 chanter
how to do it
# Jul 29 2001 at 10:45 PM Rating: Default
Have 1 person resposible for handing in invasion plans. Have 1 ranger/druid responsible for casting harmony immediately after pop. Have 1 person responsible for agroing Scarbrow before he charges Garadain's camp. Once you've agroed Scarbrow pull towards the side, out of the way from the 5+ other orcs. We killed him today with 1 Level 60 SK, 1 Level 48 Ranger, and 1 Level 45 Druid. I killed him a while ago with a Level 57 SK and 45 Ranger.

kiting Scarbrow
# Apr 06 2001 at 7:45 PM Rating: Default
give that message to lookout, and hide.
after some orcs will spawn, wait till they fight with coldains.
then, turn back to fight you can target Scarbrow
just harmony it and pull with DOT
though another orcs and coldains follow it, they will be despawn soon.
last, only Scarbrow remain.. cook it well. =)

New Tactics....
# Mar 17 2001 at 6:32 PM Rating: Default
The "Two Tree" tactic no longer is pheasable. Me and a guild m8 tried it this morning:
1. Scarbrow no longer spawns in the same spot everytime. The first time we popped him he popped right behind the person handing in the Plans. Bad news for him when he sucked up that HT.
2. ALL of the orcs spawn at once now.......so you can see how the first time we tried this, it went a little sour.

Heres how we did it:
2x 45 Necs, 2x 45 Shads and 1x upper40 Shammy:
They waited around the cooking fire while I handed in the plans, ALL of the orcs popped by the trees (at once). 1 Shad cast on Scarbrow to aggro, then we all cast on him while the first Shad kited the rest around. We killed Scarbrow, I looted the head (no Orb dropped), we all Feign Death'd while the Shammy ran for CC, smoooth as silk.

Some notes...

We did this part with only two peeps. Me, a Bard (51) and a Wizard (50).

First off, the invasion plans are not NO-DROP, so I tracked the messenger. When I got the plans I gave them to the wizzy. When we were ready, he handed them to the lookout while I stood between the 2 trees. I was twisting my resist songs while playing my Naggie drum. Had 203 MR and 156 each of CR an FR. Almost totally resisted the HT from Scarbrow. He spawned alone because I was standing between the trees, and insta-arrgoed onto me. The wizard rooted him and hit him with a few fire based spells. Root broke every time he was hit. So, the wizard just rooted one more time, and I used my dots to wear him down to about 20% health. One Ice Comet later and he was dead. It was really easy. Sadly he didn’t drop the Orb. VI has found out about the tree deal and has nerfed the Orb drops. You could do that all day if you wanted to. Anyway, that’s how we did it. Piece of cake.

To my knowledge increasing your resists has no effect on harm touch. Is much like a lifetap in that under normal circumstances in the proper level range it is unresistable to my understanding.
RE: Some notes...
# Jan 21 2003 at 2:52 PM Rating: Default
nope. HT is disease (or maybe magic based) and checks against resists - 200. so, it's just hard to resist... same amount off as wizard lure spells.

Apparently Scarbrow doesn't drop the orb anymore. We killed him a dozen times in a row the other night and not a single one dropped. What a bummer.

i have a question here... do u have to do the previous 4 quests to be able to do this quest? from the sounds of it you do... i assume this messenger is a trigged spawn is this correct or is he just a random spawn?
The orc messenger just runs around, people killed a lot

not triggered, you see him on track around the jail way up north and farther south all the time. He always drops those attack plans and no one has known what they are for.

And yes, you have to have the previous ring to turn in to actually finish the quest.

Can you turn in the messengers invasion plans to the lookout without doing the other stuff and have the orcs spawn? no idea.
Just kill and turn it in.

I hadn't even started the chain quest but I asked the leader of that camp "what plans" on a hunch and he told me to turn the plans in. I did, ran around for a while and came back to the camp. As a 48 bard it took me about 5 minutes to kite down the injured Scarbrow. In the end I had to fear dwarves off of him so I could get the kill. Imagine my surprise when I looted that orb. As far as soloing the kill I got -very- lucky and don't suggest that madness to anyone without a tight group or two. I'm not sure if the orb is the best for wis casters. Some I spoke to preferred the AC from a Medicine Totem more as they were at 200 and up to their eyes in +mana gear. I sat on the orb for a while (maybe a week) and traded it to settle a debt for a Sioniche's Partisan. Good luck to any who would try for it.
RE: Frozen Orb
# Dec 20 2000 at 5:33 PM Rating: Default
Forget the rest of this quest. This orb is one of the best range slot items in the game for ANY caster (druid/cleric included). AC2 +3int +3wis +40mana! Though it is lore its not no drop. Looks like a non-stackable bloodstone in inventory and a bag on your wrist when equiped. Hope this helps, oh btw.. you dont need to do any other part of the quest if all you want is this nice little item, just kill messenger and hand in invasion plans.

I've been reading on other boards that the drop rate on the frozen orb was nerfed. Some reported that they hadn't had a drop in 20+ kills, and I did see a fellow auctioning for the invasion plans for hours last night (1/19/01) in the zone, and I know he turned plans in several times. I'd have thought he would only need one since it's LORE, so it may have been nerfed as they say.

I killed the messanger just outisde the ry'gorr fort. I saved the plans because I figured they were important ;-)
