You say, 'hail Gleed Dragonhunter'

Gleed Dragonhunter sighs as he looks down at you. 'I grow tired of this city. I so long for the tundra and lands of the wild.'

You say, 'what tundra and lands of the wild?'

Gleed Dragonhunter says 'I enjoy training these animals, don't get me wrong, but the open wastes, where the great animals and dragons roam free are what I crave. Before I came to serve King Tormax, I wandered those wastes, hunting young dragons and elder wurms. The whistle of an arrow from my bow was like sweet music - each slash of my sword a sweet song.

You say, 'what young dragons and elder wurms?'

Gleed Dragonhunter says 'Yes, I hunted true dragons. The younger ones, at least. With my bow I could shoot them from such a distance they would never see what was coming.

You say, 'what bow?'

Gleed Dragonhunter unslings an intricately carved bow from his back and shows it to you. 'I crafted this bow myself. It was to be a great slayer of wurms and dragons and it was, for a time. Now it goes to waste in the city, far from the beasts I long to slay. Far from the hunt and the excitement.'

You say, 'what waste?'

Gleed Dragonhunter says 'It is such a shame, this bow deserves to be used. If only there were someone who would use it to hunt the beasts - someone to slay them and skin them like they should be.

You say, 'what beasts'

Gleed Dragonhunter says 'You will, little one? One such as yourself is a hunter? I did not know your kind had any skill in such things. In fact, I do not believe your kind could hunt a wurm, not without my wonderful bow. I will not simply hand it to a foolish Troll. Hunt down some big game before you bother talking to me again. Perhaps if you bring me the tail of the elusive Vluudeen.

Vluudeen is a wurm that can be found in the Great Divide. He does indeed drop a tail when killed, but I don't know what you get when you turn it in.

I've been on a raid tonight in Kael and we killed Gleen Dragonhunter and I won this nifty lil bow. Then I read about this quest and thought that was pretty funny, we just killed him.

It was better than my crappy bow, but I have been killing like 50 bees n rats n bats in Misty Thicket and have yet to see it proc with my 53 Warrior and a Dex of 111. :/ Good range though..

I assume nowadays nobody cares about this with all the Nightmare Compound Bow going around.. still 3k to fork out for one !

I just wanted to give my insights on this quest since I had to look around a bit to find the information I needed.
Vluudeen is a 3 day spawn and will be up every time the servers go down or there is a zone repop.
Vluudeen spawns at the location -4934 -254 and IS A STATIC SPAWN. He spawns right next to the river, inside the tunnel (so if your going to sit and wait for him, you can sit up on the big rock and wait there for him to pop). *WARNING: randomly, see invis dragons wander by and will kill you if your invis, be careful*.
Vluudeen was a very easy kill for my level 50 beastlord. For all you beastlords out there, here's a small guide to killing him.
First, summon a pet and full buff him with all the essentials.
Keep flash of light, envenomed breath (or the dot of the current level you have) memed, they will be essential.
Park your pet out side of the cave.
Before you pull Vluudeen out of the cave, make sure there are no wandering dragons because they will add and aggro on you if you pull Vluudeen past them.
Now, I opened up by pulling Vluudeen with a Sha's Lethargy. I ran him outside of the cave and proceeded to throw my pet on him and let him tank a minute and eventually I couldn't keep up with the healing and pet died, so what I finally did was I casted flash of light on him after he died and resummoned another pet and rebuffed him and sent him on Vluudeen and casted an envenomed breath.
By doing all that, I must have created massive aggro because Vluudeen's health was at about 95 or 90 percent and I maintained aggro throughout the entire rest of the battle. Make sure you have sow on yourself and just run him around in donut circles while your pet beats on him.
Every once and a while, refresh envenomed breath to retain more aggro. To do this, cast flash of light on Vluudeen and then envenomed breath.
Congradulations, you've slain Vluudeen :)
Log onto your ranger now and run him over to Vluudeen's corpse and loot the tail.
Now, my halfling ranger was conned threatning to the giants, so what I did was I had my beastlord run over to the entrance of thurgadin and kill wandering coldain wolfmasters for their heads.
I collected 8 of them and gave them to my ranger and turned them into to the kromrif recruiter at the entrance to kael drakkel on the EW side (note: I did not kill 1 giant or 1 coldain though remember, so faction was untouched.. may need more depending on your faction with the giants).
That got me to dubious and I was able to get past all the giants safely (even the see invis previously threatning giants).
You should also con dubious to Gleed now so just run over to him and sneek behind him and turn in the tail for your new bow.
Even if Gleed says nothing about the quest to you, you can still turn in the tail for the bow AND you can do it really at any level I assume. I did the quest at 25 as of 10/28/02.
Well there you go, good luck on your quests all!

P.S.- I camped Vluudeen an entire day but did not see him but logged on the next morning to see him up. Your best bet to find him up is to figure out how far back the last patch was and count forward from there or just keep one charecter logged off at his spawn spot and check randomly.

To sneak or not to sneak
# Jul 22 2002 at 5:42 AM Rating: Decent
One post says yes to sneak one no to sneak. Has it changed. I guess i need to know.
RE: To sneak or not to sneak
# Jul 29 2002 at 2:31 AM Rating: Decent
Yes, sneak works wonderfully.. My faction with the giants could not possibly get any worse, and yet, I was able to turn in the tail and complete the quest. The problem is just with the two see invis mobs at the tunnel entrance. If you can get them outta there, the third (at the back of the tunnel) can be snuck by if you sneak and hug the left wall. Crouch down, while sneaking, and get as close to the ledge as you can. You'll see Gleed and be close enough to trade with him. Turn in the tail, and poof! You have a nice new bow! Back off, use a thurg gate potion, and get out of dodge.. :) Good luck!

who cares who gets it- what lv does it proc-- im 47 and no proc yet-- as for getting the bow it sucked, had help with the wurm from two others and that was kinda easy( gated once). but handing the tail in, was the worst part for me-had to do it alone and died a few times doing it- also for some reason sneak failed on the way out after gettting the bow - and i got smoked by the bank -but all in all it was well worth the deaths to get the bow- bad thing is- hope you like crafting arrows, cause youll use them as fast as you make them- think im going to find something that summons them for me- even if there sucky 1dmg arrows. ( nothing worse than leaveing the hunt to go make arrows)
Thurg NO NO

No longer can you do this quest with Thurg faction you can no longer turn in items as you are invis...... so dont try youll die...... this also sucks for the rogue epic you can nolonger hand in the note to the Dark elves so i dont think its very possible to do the Rogue epic oh well good luck and good job to all who got faction with Kael

You sure? I just got the tail today and was going to try. I have the tail so may as well give it a shot (after I build a buffer so as not to lose my level). I'm ally to Coldain and faction can't get any worse with the Kromriff.

Hail,
Did this last night. Bottomed out giant faction and Max Ally to Dorfs. Invis, sneak..duck at flagpole and you'll just reach him for trade.

Then pulled him and killed him and got one for warrior in group.

FYI, when your killing the see invis giants on the bridge. Dont kick them off path, warrior went LD and kept fighting, kicked him off and he summoned us down one at a time and killed us all.

Was able to do this with 55 war, 54 cleric, 53 druid, 59 shammy(slows still got a couple resists) 54 rogue and 53 ranger (me). Took a while, but got done.

Guide to Gleed with bad faction

Got this bow last night, thanks to the wonderful folks in the guild "Second Age" (thanks guys you are the best!)

I am a Ranger, without invis and sneak I can not see how you could do this quest if you have bad faction with Giants (sorry warriors). My faction BTW is as bad as it can get with giants, yet I completed this quest with the afformentioned help from "Second Age" (did I mention how great these people are?)

In an attempt to clarify things a bit about where Gleed is and how to get near him...

1) The area Gleed is in is the first right from the WL zone (on the way to Tormax's castle). Past the Dire wolf pit and through a tunnel guarded by 3 giants, 2 in front of the tunnel, one just beyond it.

2) All 3 see invis. You only need to deal with the first 2 giants, as the third one you can run past invised, provided you hug the tunnel on the left side. (I did this 4 times with HORRIBLE giant faction so I know it's true, just move fast and stay left)

3) After you get through the tunnel you will see a set of stairs/bridge going up to a huge mass of giants. Just before and to the left of the stairs you will see a banner/flag fluttering on a post, Gleed is directly below the banner. You can not see him unless you walk right up to the edge of the ledge and look down.

4) Make sure to be sneaking at this point. Approach the banner and you will notice the ledge you are on slopes a bit just to the left of the banner. If you sneak out and down on to this slope, and crouch, you will be low enough to hand the whip to Gleed. Be very careful not to walk to far out onto the ledge or you will fall in front of Gleed onto slippery ice and he and his pet WILL make short work of you (killed me at 52nd level in about 5 seconds, more like 3 seconds)

5) Hand him the whip, click trade and "DA TA DA TA TAAA!" <---completed quest music> you get Bow of the Huntsman.

The only 2 giants you really need to deal with are the 2 guarding the tunnel. Conned dark blue to me at 52 and are close enough that you can not pull just one. "Second Age" (a real cool guild) was doing a raid and graciously offered to take care of the 2 guarding giants, even rezzed me for free when I aggroed Gleed (forgot sneak the first time).

Thanks again to Kyrielle and the monk-puller (memory fails me, dang) from "Second Age" (did I mention what a really nice bunch of people they are?) who made my month.

p.s. Whakk, you are too funny.

Got the bow
# Nov 07 2001 at 9:27 PM Rating: Default
Got the bow for my lvl 28 baby ranger (KoS to giants btw) at the cost of half a lvl

Here's the skinny
Killed valudean with 2 51wiz and had help from a 55 ranger to finish him off. Bugger has about 20k hp.

Loged my ranger in grabed the bow, and ran off to kael.

Bound at zone. got my self killed, to have a corpse bank.

Explored kael naked to find gleed. Gleed is in the left branch (comming from ew. you'll see 2 storm giants guarding the entryway above a pond with direwolfs around the pond.

The 2 storm giants and the one slightly sees cammo and you can't sneak pass them.

Lucky for me there was a raid going on, and they pulled these 3 guys.

Going inside you will see an ice bridge (do not cross the bridge (which I did)) Gleed is just to the left of you below the cliff that you are on. you can sneak up close to him (there is a pole there) and get close enough to trade the tail in)

Pretty simple all in all =) well worth biting the 5 deaths or so.
The Quest

I just did this quest today, and there wasn't a whole lot of info out there, so I'll sum up what I know.
Vluudeen spawns in a cave in GD near -6000,-1000. It seems like he always spawns in the same spot, just inside, and to the right. I don't think that he has a placeholder.
His difficulty - tough. Probably twice as hard as an ancient wurm, but with no more abilities. He can't cast, but he melees well, and has a lot of hp.
My advice, kite him. He can be snared, but not rooted (he CAN, but it's tough). Fear is good. When I killed him, I chain snared him to build up aggro while a ranger kept behind him, jolted (the jolt is very important, if you've ever fought shardwurms you know they are only interested in killing what is closest to them) and meleed. Fear is also a good idea.
As for turning it in, Rangers and warriors with sneak(are there any?) - Kromzek is the important faction (that's the one you get from fighting in skyshrine, so good news, you don't have to ruin your dwarf faction for this one.) although Gleed himself is Kromriff. I wish I could tell you where to go in Kael, but I can't. Get someone to guide you to gleed, he's in an area with a lot of Kromzek that can see invis. He can also see invis, but he can't see sneak[he'll have his back to you, so this is good news].
Warriors without sneak, what can I tell you, sorry, I guess you have to get good with both the factions. Good luck with that.

That's all I can tell you. Warriors don't deserve this bow any way (that's a personal bias, but they just can't summon arrows with a bracer.)
Good luck,

yes, there are. halfling warriors have the racial ability of hide and sneak set at 50. :)

Hmmm i like this, He says that warriors dont deserve this bow yet he uses summoned arrows?

If your not going to put a decent arrow into your bow, YOU dont deserve the bow =-P

Hey, my fletching is 208, so it's not like I couldn't use good arrows, the fact is, with a fleeting quiver, item haste and a delay of 30, this bow goes through arrows like a fire elemental goes through pairs of underwear. I summon arrows because sometimes it takes me 50 stacks to kite a difficult mob (I don't do this all the time, kiting is a slow process) compare free, without a trip to the store (and not just any store, fletching supplies are far between) to the 19 plat 3 gold it takes me to make the good kind of arrows and tell me again that you wouldn't use summoned arrows.

Warriors don't deserve this bow? Wth are you talkin about, this is damn near the best bow a warrior can get, I don't know of any better or I would try to get one, but I'v spent most of my time in velious killin giants, damn it.
Got the bow
# Aug 30 2001 at 7:19 AM Rating: Default
Fine weapon indeed. We killed Gleed after some masterful splitting by our Grandmaster monk (he had an adorable dire wolf "pet" that hit for 233) and he dropped the bow first time. So just to definitively answer the debate down below, you CAN get this by killing him. Just don't expect it to be easy :)

Well I risked the quest tonight with Gleed /con Glowers Dubiously. I', a Barbarian warrior lev 50 and agnostic. Gleed said "oh look a talking lump of refuse" when hailed. I'm amiable with some giants but the wolf tamer in the same place as Gleed also /conned as Glowery so for a test i handed in the war wolf choker and he gave me the harness, I just bit my tongue and handed Gleed Vuludeens tail.

Got the bow
+Kromrif
+Kromzek
-claws of veeshan
-Coldain

Gleed still cons Glowery but who cares, i got the bow.
HEY! I KNOW WHEN IT PROCS!
# Jul 20 2001 at 2:36 PM Rating: Default
Had it since I was 40th level.
The darn thing procs at 49th.
Nothing better than hitting for 1 arrow damage, and then procing for 81.
Only had a crit/proc once...72 crit/81 proc
153 dmg from one arrow is kinda sweet.

344 dmg without proc is better P archery only 191 too.
Completed with Dubious Faction
# Jul 03 2001 at 3:02 PM Rating: Decent
My guild has chosen to go with Dragon Faction and so before ruining my Giant faction, I decided to try this with Dubious faction. Gleed would not give the quest, but gave me the Bow anyway.

Dubious is good enough.

Halfling warrior
Level 37

Factions, Stormgiant(Kromzek) - Dubious
Kromwiff (Gleed) - Threateningly.

I snuck up behind Gleed, and handed him the whip from the ledge above him. The giants that see you DO see invis, but they are kromzek so if you have good faction... no problem. Gleed did not turn around, and so continued to con indifferently. I then pushed trade, and tada.... Bow of the Huntsmen.

Anyone can do it provided you have sneak and good Kromzek faction... or good Kromzek faction and good Kromwiff faction.

I'm a level 41 warrior, so you don't need to be 50.
I tried to get the quest dialogue at amiable faciton, no dice
Kindly worked though. So to be safe, better wait until kindly.
Bow doesn't proc yet.
Can quest be done invis?
# May 27 2001 at 11:19 PM Rating: Default
I currently have Vluudeen's tail and want to know if you can do quest invisible? I know most Velious quests are faction based.. I am KoS to giants. and am now wondering if you can do this InviseD?
What is the lowest faction that has been completed?
# Apr 17 2001 at 4:17 PM Rating: Decent
Has anyone done this with dubious faction?

I know he will not give me the quest (he says something about tearing out my tongue) and I have the whip, but I am not in a big rush to give him the tail to have him say he won't help me.

By the way, you need to be standing basically at his feet for him to acknowledge that you even exist. I could not get a response from him from up above.

/em Hoping someone has done this while dubious

THanks,

ok we all know vludeen drops the tail and we know he spawns in GD in the wurm caves but what are his Placeholders if any. or is every wurm his placeholder?
RE: need more info on vludeen

follow the river from the dorf town to the wurm cave. Follow nearly straight through until you come to the second left- turn and look. If Vludeen isnt up he isnt up :P. But thats where he spawns- and he remains stationary there. I dont know his spawn time or if theres a PH there or not, as i have the fortune of being able to track

Does anyone have any information on the quest for his sword? Although I am amiable with him and warmly with the other faction (my King Tormax is still threatening), Gleed will still not talk to me. I do have the bow but would love to have the sword. Any information would be appreciated.
Getting to Gleed
# Feb 28 2001 at 8:40 AM Rating: Default
After much faction work, I finally finished this quest. As previously posted, you get to Gleed by leaving the path to left just prior to the bridge. If you are a half-elf, you will have to jump to get back up. I had to go right to the edge to be able to hail Gleed and even then he didn't give me the quest. I'm pretty sure you have to be really close when you are talking to him. I was, however, close enough to give him Vuuldeen's tail. Giving the tail did result in the whip. Also, exp and factions. No King faction though (I'm still threatening with the King's people even after turning in lotsa heads-ummm at least 40 of them).

Please note, you will be standing on ice if you step off the stone to be closer to Gleed. It is very hard to control were you are and where you are going on that ice too. I'm going to levetate myself and get really close to gleed and see if he will talk to me. I read that if you kill him the bow is the common drop but there is a ranger only sword as a rare drop. Anyone know if this is also a quest?
