At the end of the previous quest, Garadain mentioned hunting.

You say, 'What hunting?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'My camp here boasts the most proficient hunters in the recorded history of the mighty Coldain empire. We alone could feed an entire clan. Things have been frustratingly [slow] lately, though.'

You say, 'How slow?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'After years of skinning the hides of the giantmen, my hunting knife has lost its edge. The dull blade has slowed me down considerably. It has served me well, but a new [knife] would make me a much more proficient hunter.'

You say, 'What knife?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Hunt a wooly rhino and take his tusk, then take a flawless hide from a walrus. Combine them in a forge with a skinning rock and bring me the new knife and the silver insignia ring.'

Skinning rocks are a random ground spawn throughout the zone. The "tusk" is really a Wooly Rhino Horn (drops from A Wooly Rhino), and the hide is a High Quality Walrus Hide (rare drop from A Walrus). Smith them together in a forge to craft a Coldain Hunting Knife (trivial 41), and give this to Garadain along with your Silver Coldain Insignia Ring.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Excuse me, ______, aren't you forgetting something?'
Garadain Glacierbane says 'Hrmm, not quite the work of a Coldain. Barely functional, in fact. I'll be needing to touch this up a bit. Fetch me a Coldain [smithing hammer] and I'll be sure to tell my associates in Thurgadin of your deeds.'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.
You gain experience!!

At 41 skill, the knife was trivial. Make metal bits till about 21 then steel boning till 41.
Not trivial at 34

Not trivial at 34 but successful!
Trivial at 50
# Mar 29 2001 at 3:11 PM Rating: Default
I put 20pts into smithing. Worked about 100 metal bits and then moved on to making Scaler molds until about 41 skill. After that I made Lanturns till 50 skill. I combined the knife and it was trivial.

*** Took about three or four hrs to get to 50***

I smithed the knife with a skill of 65, and it was trivial to me. Thank God I don't have to work my smithing up any higher! (I hate smithing)

Just to lower the range of skill needed in order to make this. It was trivial to me at 63 skill.
Smithing the Knife

I just worked my smithing up to a 102 and decided to give it a try since I found a skinning rock on the first day Velious launched. I was suprised to see that not only had I made the knife but it was in fact trivial. Also, the knife is not No Drop, it's not even Lore.
Smithy Hammer quest

Well, I triggered Tain Hammerfrost's giants, and they killed him. I waited around for 90 minutes for Tain Frostbight to spawn, but no NPC spawned. I guess you have to do the 4th quest the hard way, by killing the giants, and giving the vial you get from the named giant to Tain to get the hammer.

No, you can be sneaky with this. If you have the vial you cant just hand it to the regular spawned Tain. He wont accept it.

What you need to do is say the key words to spawn the giants again. Hand Tain the vial (recieve the hammer in return) and run like the devil to the zone. It's the only way to make use of the vial if you failed to protect him the first time around.

Unfortunately it's a very long wait for Tain to respawn.

Yes, the skinning rocks are found on the ground in Eastern Wastes. They can be found anywhere there. It would be much easier if they spawned in a certain spot.

i have found this skinning rock twice... both times i was pulling for a group we set up just up from the valley leading down to kael... the rock was almost straight out from there once and slightly south the other time... just an area to search while you hunt

Please note that when I finally smithed the knife, I had a skill level of 106. It was NOT trivial, I actually got a skill increase. You will receive a Gold ring (AC 3, STR +3, Sv Magic +3), and another quest.

Are the knifes and rings NO DROP?

As these get up in difficulty the ring is becoming a nice tank item...I imagine we will find the plat and maybe even VELIUM ring. Possibly 5ac 5str 5vs magic. Great item for dragon raids....worth considerable effort if it goes to +5's...of course there is always diamand and jacinth items that are better for resists...But this can be worn everyday.

Also what was the next quest hehe your killing me I can't wait.

The rings are all no drop. The Knife isnt.

For skinning stones, look to the east, directly from Kael zone. Do not go past the sleeping dragon. Every time I cross this area I see perhaps 10-15 of them on the ground.

I know the skinning rock is No Drop, and I _think_ the knife was too, but don't remember for sure. The Rings are No Drop.

The next quest involves getting a smithy hammer from Tain Frostbight by giving him a note. I've only seen Tain Hammerfrost (see Ghrek's Vial quest) who you can also get a Coldain Smithy Hammer from, but doing it that way is tough. I've been told Tain Frostbight will spawn if Tain Hammerfrost dies, but haven't had a chance to check it yet. I'm hoping to have time tomorrow (12/15/00).

And to the other question, no, you do not add water when you smith the knife.

Do we need to add water(like always when smithing) to get the knife or just the mentioned ingredients?

Just those three items: skinning rock, HQ Walrus, and the Rhino horn. No water is needed.
